Roy Clark was highly regarded and renowned as a guitarist, banjo player, and fiddler. He was exceptionally skilled in the traditions of many genres, including classical guitar, country music, Latin music, bluegrass, and pop. He wasn't simply a guitar virtuoso. He was a true master of that instrument. RIP

Even crazier still, a lot of flamenco guitarists use nylon string classical 6 string guitars. They are easier to pick and strum and Roy is using a 12-string steel and his accuracy is freaking amazing. It is so hard to move the wrist as fast as he is doing during the strum parts on a 12 string steel let alone on a 6 string nylon and keep the sound clean. Roy's main genre was country, but he could play anything and do it amazingly well. To say today's players do it better is ignorant. Every generation had amazing players and Roy Clark was one of them.

I was a small child but I remember them all meeting at the house a few times a year to go hunting. Back then, I knew he was a musician and had heard him play the guitar and banjo, but it was always bluegrass music. It wasn't until he hit it big in the late 70's with the hit song "Yesterday when I was young" and landed the tv show Hee Haw, that I realized he was a country singer on the radio. He had moved to Tennessee by then, and I was busy being a teenager, so I didn't see him again after that. 😏 I'd love to hear you review that 78 hit song.

His stage presence was always that of a hick, or "hillbilly ". But, he was quite accomplished as a musician, on multiple instruments. In my opinion, one of the all time most underrated!

Roy Clark was very very very country he is an iconic guitarist and fiddle player, he used to be on a show from the 70s called Hee-Haw they would say I’m a pick in and I’m agreement, the genius of Roy Clark is that he brought this beautiful international iconic song to an audience that would never have heard it before. That is why you don’t hear any accompaniment. He didn’t want peoples minds to shut down to the beauty of the music because it was “foreign“ and I absolutely agree that malaguena is a very viscerally blood pumping song.

He wasn't "playing" that song, he was working it. You could see by the look on his face he was working hard. I'll bet his strum arm was burning by the end. Beautiful song performed flawlessly.

Roy Clark was one of the most underrated guitarists ever. Because of his jovial personality and the fact that he was a Country artist, he was easy to dismiss but he was a top-tier musician in every sense. He was definitely one of a kind.

I’ve always liked Roy Clarck’s talent and I’ve heard this song by done by him before and it still amazes me how he plays this very complex piece without flaw. There is a video somewhere in the tonight shows archive of him playing flight of the bumblebee and he starts at 4 beats per bar and ends up at 32 or 64 ? beats to the bar again without flaw, amazing.
