  • Today on Buckle Up Mk2, Jasper takes Toyota's famously indestructible Pickup Truck out for a test, to see why it's held up as the best commercial vehicle in its class. Used by everyone from British hill farmers to most of the world's 'freedom fighters' the Hilux is known world over for being sturdy and dependable (and easy to mount LMGs to) but should you buy one?
Up against rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi L200, Fiat Fullback, Peugeot Landtrek, Mazda BT-50 and KGM Torres is this still the pick of the bunch?

I have a pre-facelift version of this, but with the 4.0L 6cyl petrol, with 300,000km on it, still a fantastic vehicle.

      Invincible according to Toyota

Toyota pickup trucks, particularly the Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser models, have become notable for their use by freedom fighter organizations and insurgent groups as "technicals." These vehicles are prized for their rugged durability, reliability, and off-road capabilities, making them ideal for the harsh terrains often encountered in conflict zones. Freedom fighter groups frequently modify these trucks by mounting heavy weaponry, such as machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, and rocket launchers, turning them into highly mobile and effective combat platforms. The ease of maintenance and availability of spare parts for Toyota pickups further contribute to their popularity among such groups. This widespread use has been observed in various conflicts across the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia, highlighting the unintended role of these commercial vehicles in modern asymmetric warfare.

Great truck but.......... ONE MAJOR PROBLEM...... the chassis crossmember which holde in the fuel tank is made of cheese. That crossmember will rust out by the time it's 11 years old sometimes sooner. Mine had hardly been used off-road, seen very little winter salt on roads, i live in Sussex. At 10 years old i had to replace the fuel tank crossmember, it's so common , it's hard to locate a replacement crossmember, Toyota and Rough trax are constantly sold out, with them constantly on order. Yet Toyota deny it's a problem . It's a recall in the USA. I've owned Hilux's for 45 years, never again cause even the latest model is rusting out on the same crossmember. ps. the rest of the chassis is perfect on mine. However Scottish trucks are rusting on every crossmembe and that front bash plate on Scottish trucks is just dissolving. ISUZU is the way forward now.
