- More about this project:
This is my entry for the Summer's Woodworking Third Annual (2015) 2x4 Competition.
For a long time I've been intrigued by automata, which are essentially mechanical moving sculptures. Having a background in engineering and a creative streak, I really enjoy how automata blend engineering and art together.
For the competition, I had to build something creative using only a single 8-foot 2x4 as my primary source of material. I had never built an automaton before, so I thought this would be a fun challenge and a chance to stretch my skills with my limited tools. I ran into some issues along the way and had to make changes as I went, but I enjoy the problem solving process. Seeing the idea come together in the end makes it worth the effort. Overall I consumed 4ft 10in of my 2x4, which included 7 inches of 2x4 used for the dowel cutting jig.
Thank you to Brian at Summers Woodworking for organizing the competition and giving me an excuse to work on a fun project.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! That jig is amazing for making dowels! Mind = Blown
I know right? like wtf
buy dowels .......get real
+jasonandrachel gray This project was made for a 2x4 challenge. I could have easily bought dowels, but it was more satisfying making them from the same 2x4 as everything else. It was also fun being able to make any diameter I wanted.
Amazing video not only the product but the editing and good music choice, subbed.
Thank you, and welcome to the channel. :-)
I made it myself. Just go to wood prix webpage if you'd like do the same
Absolutely marvellous.
A wonderful project. Well done on the photography.
One of the very few vids I've enjoyed on RUclips.
Really ...... Well done.
Wow, thank you very much
Ma po I second that.......
Brilliant editing and choice of music. Almost in time.
Well thought out project.
IN ALL ASPECTS !
Absolutely a pleasure to watch this....again and again.

Amazing! You are a young talented modern Gepetto carved your Pinocchio. I watched many times and still amazed.

+Phil Cooke Thanks man, I was a little worried until that last sentence :-)
Just plain old, down to earth, nothing but good. Both project and video.
Thank you tralexan, you're very kind.
That was really amazing. Great combination of styles - the gears were great. The head turn was a nice touch. Awesome job.
Thank you Joe, you're very kind.
I was thinking of participating in one of those 2x4 challenges... have to rethink that now. The bar is pretty high. :)
Pretty sweet project. Probably the best one of these 2x4 projects I've seen.
Thank you.
Simply mind-shatteringly amazing! Unless the little mechanical man actually created another little mechanical man, I could not be more impressed.
Jeff Taylor I might be an automaton myself, though I haven't figured out for sure yet.
Nailed it!
Very nice. I haven't seen all the other entries, but I think you'd have my vote.
Thanks Matt.
you did a great job on the the fit and finish of your automata,
Simple superb both in the rotary carving and excellent use of cogs and cams. I really, really like your entry.
Thanks Jack O'wheelie ! I enjoyed the intricate sculpting/carving on yours as well.
Amazing. Very nice work.
I love the dowel-making jig as well. I'll be building one of those for my own shop.
Thank you. The dowel jig is fun. It takes some trial and error to get it set up, but it can crank out a lot of dowels fast.
Wow Ben, I am very impressed. Making an automaton from a 2x4! Looks great and very creative.
Thanks Just Build Stuff !

I give a second thumbs up for the dowel maker. I've never seen it done like that before
Thank you!
Great video work! Thank you so much for sharing!! Extremely creative all without nails ... except 1!!! :)
Thanks :-)
A simply astounding video. Fantastic cinematography, great music, and interesting subject; and that's to say nothing of the superb craftsmanship and imagination.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
Leo
That video is worth watching even just for the dowel-making rig! Clever. :)
Thanks Stephane Daury!
FYI, credit goes to Jim Steinbrecher for the dowel technique: ruclips.net/video/6e9F_1sGOXA/видео.html
Ben Brandt I'm making one this weekend. :)
Stephane Daury Getting the blade height just right takes some tweaking, but once you do it works amazingly well. When you get the diameter just right, the smaller hole burnishes the surface of the dowel as it passes through, and leaves a nice shiny surface finish: instagram.com/p/3AxLZNxKlJ/
This is by far my favorite project on RUclips thanks for showing us!
Thanks Jon! Happy to share, it was fun to build
Very nice. And always remember these....safety glasses...:-)

Wow! I have been making wood Automata for about 10 years now and this video was really fun to watch. You really did an outstanding job on this project! Your step by step video was awesome. I'm near Mankato and would love to have Coffee some time and share war stories, successes, future ideas, etc.
Thanks Ken! Nice to 'meet' you. Swapping stories might be fun. This project was a lot of fun, so I expect I'll be doing more like it in the future once my next idea hits me.

ProtoSimTech Thanks for watching. Looks like you've got some fun projects going on your channel. Jealous of your CNC :-)
Ben Brandt That CNC machine is definitely handy ;-) They are becoming cheaper and cheaper these days, and you can even build your own on a budget.
Just discovered you from a link Peter Brown put up for your floating shelf. Amazing work, editing, music etc. whole package loved watching it. just subbed keep the videos coming.
Awesome! Thanks Ian! I'll have to thank Peter. Where did he post it?
+Ben Brandt someone was suggesting he build a electronics caddy or something like that in the comment section of his bacon handled vegetable peeler video. He said something like "here is a cool one i found". It was a link to your floating shelf. I checked it out as i also hate the phone charging area near my bed. found your video above to be perfectly executed
+Ian Thomas Cool, thanks for the info Ian. Peter's a good guy. I use the shelf to charge my phone all the time now, though ironically I couldn't show it in the video because I filmed it using my phone :-/
Who are the pucks who gave this video 123 thumbs down? Great job in every single way matey. I loved the 'turning head' and will incorporate it.
