    John, I purchased this 20ah and replaced it 3yrs ago following your video. It has worked perfectly. I just got a 1500W inverter and planning on power a 600w fridge and some led lights in case of a power outage in SoCal. Does this 20ah will be sufficient? I'm planning on keeping the ignition ON and let the HV battery supply power to it.

      I'm glad the new 12v battery is working out, you'll probably not need to touch it for another fifteen years.
      I did a video on using a smaller wattage inverter on a 500e. That one connected thru the 12v cig lighter port. Honestly, I would proceed with caution & only power the essentials. If you need 600w for the fridge, internet wifi, and some LED lights. The grand total would be well under 700w. Try to get just what you need and not get carried away with the higher wattage stuff. I know it's tempting, but there's nothing on the car that draws anything more than 300-400w of 12v current. The battery heater and cabin heater are both high voltage units. And at this wattage, definitely connect your inverter cables directly to the battery under the hood.

    Lithium batteries are usually stored or shipped at nominal voltage 3.2 lifepo4 or 3.6-3.7 liion. It extends the life keeping it below that or above for long periods will keep it at rated life. It can be trippled or better if kept around nominal in use.

  • @JustWasted3HoursHere
    @JustWasted3HoursHere 4 года назад +1

    One reason the LIFEPO4 battery was showing good volts but not much capacity is because of how lithium batteries maintain voltage even when they are almost depleted (which is a great feature, for sure), unlike a lead acid battery that gradually drops voltage as it is depleted. If you have any lithium-powered tools or yard trimmers, etc you've probably noticed that they run great right up until they actually stop, whereas other battery types start running slower or with less and less power as they are drained. Mine also shipped with over 13 volts but I kept it on the battery charger for a few hours to top it off just to be sure. For the first week or so of driving I also checked the battery setup* every day to make sure it was maintaining the charge.
    Thanks for giving me this idea to do this swap! haven't looked back yet and I've talked others into doing it too.
    * I ended up with two 20AH 12V LIFEPO4 batteries and connected them in parallel, giving me 40AH, just in case.

    Hi John, thanks for the reply; here is an update, the Relion battery was replaced with a new one under warranty, and the same problem resulted: 12 volt system shut down after a few weeks of use. It too took a trickle charge for about a half hour until full, so it's capacity also diminished to very little. In between, I replaced the original lead acid battery and had no issues. However, periodically the error message "Service Electric Vehicle System" so perhaps there is an underlying problem. Several bloggers report that disconnecting the 12 volt battery will reset the error in most cases. Any other advice will be greatly appreciated. I take it your Relion RB-20 battery has been working fine ever since the swap was made.

      Thanks for sharing your troubling experiences with us. It still sounds like a DC to DC converter problem with charging the "12v battery" properly. Fortunately, I never had any of these problems while owning the 500e. Although, right before selling it, I removed the RB-20 and use it for testing projects on the bench. In fact, it's about 4 feet away from me and is charged to 13.2v. 12.8v is nominal which like 50% charge. They charge up to 13.4v when full.

      It's one of the easiest most effective mods to do. Works flawlessly. Prices have continued to drop. So, there's even more incentive. I bought another 12v LiFePo4 battery for another car (to be an electric car conversion eventually) it's even lighter with more capacity & $50 cheaper.

      @@danielkangX If you do this mod, be sure to charge the new battery overnight before installing. (Ignore what the voltage is, just charge it.) The 500e should never have to be jumped in the classical sense. It doesn't have a starter or pull a big current, it only turns on. If the battery doesn't support the current required to turn on, it needs to be charged or replaced. The 12VDC battery does not affect the high voltage battery that propels the vehicle. They are independent although the high voltage battery does charge the 12V system when the car is operating.

I performed this battery replacement with the same model and it won't power any of the 12 volt functions after a few weeks; i.e. the car won't start and the dash won't light up, no 12 volt functionality. This has happened a second time after trickle charging the battery overnight to full. Any suggestions before I contact Relion for an RMA?

    • @theevolvingworld
      @theevolvingworld  Год назад

      Glad you have enjoyed the videos! The DC to DC converter should be using the HV battery to top off the 12v battery as needed. It will have to do this more often, but for much less time. You should not have to "trickle charge" it ever. Sub freezing temps will reduce the battery performance as would having some heavy parasitic draw. If it's not one of those three things then it must be the battery.

    Hello, I stumbled upton this video as I was searching around for the "Service 12v battery" error. I'm planning to replace battery in my 2015 500e. Please excuse if my questions are dumb as I'm totally a noob in car tech 🙂. Would this battery be ok for my situation where I drive my car rarely? Like a 10 mile ride once in a couple of months. I've realized that the range on my car has gone very low around 65-70 miles per 100% - how can I get more miles out of it - I could think of weight reduction as one thing any other tips would be appriciated.

Can’t wait to upgrade, I hate how heavy the current one is and that Ive had to replace it every 3 years. When I change it out to the lithium ion battery, can I just charge it with the car plugged in charging or do I have to hook it up to a battery charger and charge it separately?

      Every little bit of weight reduction adds up! Once you add the proper terminal adapters on the top & adjust for the smaller size, you should be able to just hook it up & not think about for 15-20 years. Enjoy the benefits of adding lightness!

    • @MixItUpABit
      @MixItUpABit 2 года назад

      @@theevolvingworld I got it hooked up now! A few concerns arose, the terminal adapters seem still just a bit lose like they are still moveable even as tight as the connections will go so I’m feeling like they don’t fit well. I noticed the adapters are tapered but the connections don’t seem to be so maybe that is the issue? I feel like bigger adapters would have worked better, but I didn’t see in the video you mention a specific size so I just looked up some info on the relion website and did my best to choose the right one.
      Aside from that some good things: The battery came with enough juice to power on the car right away I didn’t even have to leave it charging over night, heard the little ‘heartbeat’ sound almost right away. Also, took the car for a test drive after installing ion battery and my god this thing reaallly whips now, it was quick before but now there’s a noticeable difference in dynamics. Jus feels light as air and takes off like a bird.

    • @theevolvingworld
      @theevolvingworld  2 года назад +1

      They should be "just firm enough", but careful not to "overtighten" as lead, brass, or tinned copper are all softer metals. The taper is for a more universal fit. Put the cables on the thickest part of the terminal, if still loose then add some thin scrap metal copper or brass to the terminals for a tighter fit. Don't overtighten.
      Even a little bit of weight taken high off the nose makes a difference. The longevity of the new compared to old school nasty lead stuff is the best part. Ciao.

      It should not really matter. The DC-DC converter is always charging up the 12v from the HV pack. A slightly larger capacity LiFePO4 12v would not hurt anything and might give some added piece of mind especially if the car is parked for longer periods of time in colder weather. The only downside would be added cost and a little more weight.

Perhaps the 1volt charging default on the later Fiat 500e models are different (mine is a 2017). If you provide your email address I will send you the Charging guide from Relion. I tried an old lead acid charger and it also indicated full charge in about 15 minutes which made the battery output 12.8 volts but lasted only a few weeks worth of use in the vehicle. Relion has always stated it's a drop in replacement for any Lead-acid battery. The charge curve is very similar. I've used an old 12v charger from the early 1990's for all of my 12v charging lead or LiFePo4. It's always get's the latter of the two up to 13.2 - 13.4v. If your alternator or dc-dc converter (as is the equivalent in an EV) is working properly it should be putting out 14v.

    if I wanted to upgrade the audio system by adding a sub and amp (say around 250-500W RMS), would you see any issues arise from the additional load on these smaller batteries? Or would it make sense to either:

      Remember the 12v is the weakest link on any EV. It needs to be kept sound.
      Otherwise, the car won't work, you'll be stranded, and possibly kill the HV battery, as well.

I forgot about the sunroof, which is also nice.
      Whenever I go on Cargurus.com to search for Kia Soul EVs, I always go into the filter and select: Trim: + version; One owner; Certified Previously Owned (CPO); No accidents. Usually narrows the search down from about 130 or so to about 15, but that's okay with me. I do the CPO because I will almost certainly be buying it from out of state and likely won't have the opportunity to test drive it or have a mechanic look it over, so this is a Kia certified way of making sure it's already been looked over. And of course, low mileage models are a plus too.
      I like Carvana because they can bring it to your door, but their selection of Kia Souls is extremely limited. Usually only 4 or 5 in total. Not good (and none of them are the plus model usually). Luckily, most dealerships can arrange to have their cars delivered anywhere in the country for a fee (usually $300 to $1500 depending on distance). That's fine with me

The Kia can charge at up to 6.6kw with its built in charger, so that would be about 27.5 amps at 240v, but almost all of the dual voltage EVSEs out there only go to 16 amps (about 3.8 kw). Anyway, have you still had no issues with that ReLion lithium 12V battery in your Fiat after 2 years? Because I am really keen to do this myself. Thanks, man!

    The only issue I would worry about is during winter time. Lithium is terrible when it gets cold. Its possible that you may have starting issues if you live in an area that gets real cold for a long period of time.

    You really should have clamped it in more securely than with bag ties. They will never hold in the event of a sudden stop. Could be dangerous.

    Whats the C rating ? I know in diesel engines you would need a 6C but thats to do with actually starting the engine. Do you not need a balance unit to keep the LiFePO4 safe/healthy ?

    • @theevolvingworld
      @theevolvingworld  6 лет назад +1

      It appears to be 1c continuous & 7.5 sec bursts up to 2c. No BMS needed. It does have over & under charge protection. The LiFePO4 chemistry is the safest most stable of all the Li-Ion chemistries. Not the lightest or most energy dense though.

      His car does not have a starter nor a combustion engine, hence no need for a high C rating.

      Hi gasdorfic, haven't heard from you in awhile. Good question. Being 33% the capacity might be a factor if the car sits for long periods of time at those temps. Maybe somebody who buys one and lives in Indiana or in a similar long cold winter region can chime in.

    Hopefully the dc/dc converter will not overcharge your new LiIon Battery. remember the electrical system of the car was designed to charge your old Lead Acid battery.

    • @bitmanev4331

      indeed, I sincerely like the idea of getting rid of those Lead Acid batteries but how does it being charged is the question

    • @theevolvingworld
      @theevolvingworld  6 лет назад

      The New battery is designed to be a drop-in replacement for any Lead-acid battery. The only difference here is it's 1/3 the capacity. The DC/DC converter should read the voltage as full sooner & cut off. More charges, less time each charge. The New battery also has built-in over & under charge protection.

    • @jirigrandpa
      @jirigrandpa 6 лет назад

      Your assumptions are based on what?
      What is maximum voltage that Li-Ion battery can handle?
      What do you mean under “DC/DC converter will read that battery is full sooner. “?
      The fact is that every time car is turned on, DC/DC converter will apply 14.3 V to 12V battery and will regulate charging current based on 12V battery voltage.
      What is the maximum charging current that Li-Ion battery can handle?
      What is the maximum charging current the car can apply to the 12 V battery?

      I'm watching your videos and trimming my 500e down. I just did the trunk today. I weighed everything that came off. The whole trunk came out to 20 pounds of weight. I'm going to get rid of the seats and make it a sort of hatch back. Thanks for all your videos. I love this little car and I'm learning a lot about electric cars. I'm confused? why does an electric car (I don't own one but thinking of getting one) have a battery like this? I thought the only battery the electric car's have, including the Fiat 500E is more like the type I see in this other video, see: ruclips.net/video/ROu8T_ehdLA/видео.html

    • @theevolvingworld
      @theevolvingworld  3 года назад

      All current electric cars have two batteries. One is the "big battery" which is a high voltage & high capacity battery that propels the car. The other type is one like this, which is common amongst all gasoline & electric cars: a 12v low voltage battery.
      Why does a modern EV need an old fashioned 12v battery? It's simple, because virtually every electrical component (such as power windows, wipers, radio, headlights, etc. etc.) is the same component commonly found in gas cars. Why reinvent the wheel?
