To pre-check for 64-bit apps (3:10), instead of scrolling through the list of apps, just click the "64-bit..." label in the table header and the entire list will sort by that field, "No" values at the top (because "N" < "Y").

Awesome work! Your review provokes a few questions for me... I want to preface these questions with to bits of intuition. First, the Mac's UI feels like the oldest part of the OS. The design overhaul around the time of Yosemite just made everything a little flatter, but elements of the old skeumorphism paradigm remain. The menu bar now seems to be flooded and overflowing w/ apps (Shazam, Dropbox, Google Drive, Sophos Antivirus etc.) and info now. Notification center is cramped. And in dark mode, there is no color, just a flip from black to white. A really good dark mode, in my eyes, is watchOS - which has loads of color in every app! And window management, while efficient and effective, is not as lively and visually cool as on iOS/iPad OS. Furthermore, there are like six or seven different window styles in Catalina, well documented by AppleInsider in the beta review. It's a mess compared to the interface consistency of iOS. The UI feels like it was designed for an era without full screen apps, multiple desktops, and trackpad gestures/multitouch. Those things feel like they were just add-ons rather than integral pieces of the OS to some degree. Second, there are rumors of an overhaul to the iOS interface. I don't know if that includes iPad OS. To my mind, the lack of a coherent design on the Mac and the possibility of a new interface on iOS/iPad OS signals a new design language might be incoming with SwiftUI. Something like Microsoft's fluent design effort... What do you think is the likelihood Apple is working on a common design language across devices? And when do you think that new language will debut? And in what time frame do you think Appkit and UIkit will be deprecated in favor of SwiftUI? Because devs like Microsoft and Adobe will need a lot of time to prepare... Because I want a cooler looking and more modern interface than Windows 10 dark mode now! LOL!

Sidecar has greater requirements than Catalina. The earliest MBP that will officially work with Sidecar is late 2016. There is an unofficial workaround to make Sidecar function with some earlier Macs. I don't know how. I got this info from the everymac website. Your iPad has to be a recent model too. It has to be Apple Pencil compatible, even if you don't plan to use the Pencil. So: iPad 5th & 6th gen, iPad Mini 5, iPad Air 3rd gen, all iPads Pro.
The permission changes are really well-intentioned and for most people, they will greatly increase the security of their system, but I can't even tell you how many times I had to go into Finder and start an App with a right-click and then open. Catalina requires all Apps to be notarized by Apple otherwise they will not be run unless you do the right click trick. Mojave and older only required you to do this when using Apps that were not signed with a certificate. So when you did that, you knew Hey this App is unsigned, you should thread carefully especially if it is a popular app. But now even big Apps require you to do this, completely defeating the sense of "hey this can be dangerous and only ignore this message in specific circumstances" Instead now it is more an annoyance instead of a true warning.
Great info. Thanks. I will not be able to procrastinate any longer on moving my Aperture Libraries to Lightroom Classic. Do you have a link to the most recent and best method to do this?
I just upgraded and there doesn't seem to be any way to add files from my computer to my phone. There's still a files tab under the new phone section of the finder, but it just shows me the files that are already on my phone. There's no add button.
I wish there was a touch version of OS X so I could actually replace a laptop with an iPad. There’s just a few things I can’t do on an iPad that likely won’t ever change that I can’t get over.
Podcast doesn't seem to have playback speed. I am greatly disappointed as someone who listens to all my podcast at 2x speed on my iPhone and iPad. I was looking forward to Podcast being on macOS. This kind of disappointed me. EDIT: It does. Go to ‘controls’ in the menu bar. at the bottom of that drop down menu is ‘playback speed’
Great video Rene. Just the right amount of info. I have been waiting to install Catalina until the public release, very excited, if not scared. I guess I will see. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
Not sure if it was this video or another of yours, but you said all the functionality of iTunes was present in Apple Music on Catalina. That's not true, all remote functionality is gone. Never realized how much I use that until I installed Catalina.
All said. I upgraded yesterday, upgrade was buggy, but most things, except the Security Layer, is well done. Other few things, which they never address in are small issues in Apple Mail
The "32-bit apps deserve to die" is a terrible take. For an example, working in audio, there are still a ton of old 32-bit processor and instrument plugins that are not and can not be maintained, having their developers gone or sources lost. Yet, people still rely on these plugins, with no possibility to replace them. Not supporting and embracing legacy support is out right offensive to many in practice, and it's the main thing the Microsoft for once actually gets right.
I am already finding bugs in Mac OS 10.15 Catalina, the chief of which--so far--is the News App. I am having mega trouble scrolling through the news stories. The screen freezes, and then I have to close out the App and start over. I reckon Apple will be releasing 10.15.1 fairly soon to clean up these issues.😩
I wish I hadn't upgraded; only one program wouldn't run due to 64-bit which was OK but the fact that there are a few programs which I hadn't got off from the App Store which now do not work. Should have done better research!!
Was going to keep one Mac dedicated for 32-bit. After running Catalina on two different Macs, I think I'll convert all my Macs to Catalina. I found that many of the 32-bit games that I have are available on Windows. No reason to stay on old tech.

My Catalina update gave me a black screen that reminded me of the windows blue screen. Is Apple starting to bring software hen its70% ready the way windows use to do.
Catalina has so many negative reviews in the app store it's crazy! I honestly don't get it. A lot of nightmare upgrades apparently. I became the proud and happy owner of the entry level 21.5" iMac back in August 2010. Had to say goodbye to it in 2014 due to some mistakes and unfortunate circumstances. After some hard saving got my hands on the current top-end 21.5" iMac (4K) just a few days ago and in spite of minor changes here and there it honestly feels like coming home. Becoming an iPhone user since I last owned a Mac only enriches the experience. I can't fault my Catalina experience so far. Slight glitch with dynamic light/dark mode using the default wallpaper where it wouldn't auto switch but since customising the wallpaper it's all good. Time Machine functions just as well as I remember and is still the best backup tool I've ever used (in terms of encouraging backups by the whole set it and forget it approach). Recovery is still second to none and general polish can't be faulted.
RENE....This is the best of the best. So awesome watching reviewers and analyst mature and refine their game. Masterful perspective, Apple’s historic relevance, CLEVER as h3ll puns (and that technical acumen.... we see you)! All that to say .... damn I enjoyed this one. You’ve outdone yourself.
I think I'll wait until Christmas when I'm off work to do a clean install of Catalina as I don't like upgrading OSs and have no time with work at the moment. Hopefully 10.15.1 is out by then and any of the major niggles that maybe present are addressed. Seriously thinking of picking up an iPad Pro to act as a tablet and second display, I think that'd come in handy as I'm constantly working mobile these days.
All my movie poster icons changed with the update! I hate these "new" (16 x 9) non-poster movie icons in the Apple TV app! I called Apple Care and they are researching it for me so that's great, but I'm not going to update until they at least allow me to get my poster art work back into my mac and iPad pro
FWIW: Sidecar Note: I'm facing the same problem many are with my 2014 iMac. Check out Astropad and Luna display which both work well for me and seem to be more than adequate alternatives based on what I've read about Sidecar: lunadisplay.com/pages/astropad
Yea, yea, that is all well and good but apple needs to start spending some time making their UI consistent across the whole platform, I am tired of things like different ways to create a new folder depending on the app, I would like to be able to change system fonts on the desktop with out changing them everywhere, what is wrong with industry standard keyboard short cut ? I am so tired of the command shift cntl crap, just give me crtl insert and crtl C would that be too difficult?
05:16 "everything you could do in iTunes yesterday you can still with macOS Catalina today" that's not entirely true! Maybe I'm just the only person ranting about this, but it's not possible to add your own mp3s to the Podcast App. It used to be possible in iTunes and for me it's real sad! And I cannot understand why they killed that feature. It really makes no sense...
Not fond of losing ITunes. Wish he would address whether ITunes will stay for those who don't update. I personally think having all content (music, movies, TV, etc) in one location is preferred. I'm not a streamer, prefer to own my music. Losing the Genius feature still pisses me off. Resurrect Stevie!
I've never used macOS, but I'm curious to know what's gonna happen to games that depend on 32-bit architecture? When Ubuntu decided to move on from 32-bit months ago, there was a heck ton of backlash from the community, mainly from gamers. And they took a half-step back after the weekend.
You mentioned the Reminders app ... Frankly, I have yet to see the point of it given that the Calendar app spits out all the reminders I might ever need.

Theirs 3rd party apps to use
I wish there was a touch version of OS X so I could actually replace a laptop with an iPad. There’s just a few things I can’t do on an iPad that likely won’t ever change that I can’t get over.
Apple about think differently
How much time it takes to install catalina... does it take more than 2 hours
Where is iOS 13 for HomePod??
I'd expect audioOS 13 by the end of October.
Is 2018 MacBook Pro 15 ok to upgrade? Any hiccups?
Hi Rene, Do you know if AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT cards are supported on Catalina?
Congrats a lot for your channel, It´s awesome.
All amd are support it’s nivida you have to worry about
Can I back up more than one iphone on MacOS Catalina? Thanks
I wish I hadn't upgraded; only one program wouldn't run due to 64-bit which was OK but the fact that there are a few programs which I hadn't got off from the App Store which now do not work. Should have done better research!!
Amazing video, just subscribed! I love your iPad case, what kind is it?
Was going to keep one Mac dedicated for 32-bit. After running Catalina on two different Macs, I think I'll convert all my Macs to Catalina. I found that many of the 32-bit games that I have are available on Windows. No reason to stay on old tech.
Sidecar doesn’t work on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Disappointed.
Graeme Hogg yeah I was so surprised that my mid 2014 MacBook PRO didn’t support Sidecar.. even the wallet app 🤔🤔
@@apple-guy9394 Sidecar needs some special hardware to make the wireless display stuff low latency. Apple Wallet needs a T2 security chip, with a hardware secure enclave. 2016+ MacBook Pros have that.
i have a 2017 macbook pro and idk how smooth sidecar is supposed to be but it has some latency lag for me. Personally i didnt really plan on using that feature tho.
I’ll stick with my cintiq and iPad Pro with Astro pad. Apple kept that little fact quiet though.
Because apple want to force you to upgrade
Renee you’ve got to be by far the best RUclipsr that I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching and explaining what’s happening with the new revolution of different products keep on doing it.
J Snadow his passion for the subject shines through.
100% agree.
I can't even get Catalina to install. I download it and then get a "failed to install" message.
I hope next year is considerable step towards feature parity on iOS *and* macOS.
Catalina is the 16th version since Mac OS X 10.0. I wonder when they will finally move to version 11. Will be be at 10.99 at some time?
Why 32-bit apps can’t launch..? I don’t understand this. I have an app that ran well a couple of years ago, and now they “can’t run”.. on the same 2012 machine. 🤦♂️
Sidecar does not work wirelessly with my MBP 2018 and iPad Pro 2018. So disappointing 🤦♂️
No? I have a 2018 MPB and a 2018 iPad (non-pro) and Sidecar works.
It works for me. Make sure you’re on the same wifi network. If your Mac can’t detect your iPad Pro just restart both devices and try again
I think it needs 5GHz Wifi. Also should be same iCloud account on both devices.
@Rene Ritchie You said you used to work as a designer, what do you do now!? Always interesting to see what people move to as Im a designer myself.
My Catalina update gave me a black screen that reminded me of the windows blue screen. Is Apple starting to bring software hen its70% ready the way windows use to do.
I really need a new machine ! I still run Snow Leopard 😂
Lol snow leopard is the best though
Classic Mac os tho
Snow Leopard was the best OS Apple ever had
Look up dosdudeone. I have Catalina running on my 17” MBP i7 2011 with no problems
dosdude1
Does the book app actually work now?
You deserve so many more subscribers. There's such an incredible polish to every script and video. I look forward to every upload!
All my movie poster icons changed with the update! I hate these "new" (16 x 9) non-poster movie icons in the Apple TV app! I called Apple Care and they are researching it for me so that's great, but I'm not going to update until they at least allow me to get my poster art work back into my mac and iPad pro
Hey Rene. Love your stuff. Question off topic but why cant I comment on the youtube app on my phone?
I can now longer move my photos under ios13 to my High Sierra Macbook. . . and I can’t update to Catalina on my 2011 hardware. WTF?
25 minutes of Catalina review, 3 minutes of footage of the OS, 22 minutes of the guys face.
yeah can't stand this guys reviews either
@@cizzlen07 If you know you don't like them then why are you here? o.0

HELP where is the dashboard widgets, i have a lot of info in little notes :(
can it finally write to ntfs formatted device?
no
They've removed Dashboard. I don't think I'm going to upgrade that soon.
dashboard was 32 bit and was hardly used as you can tell by it being purposely hidden
@@jacobanderson9530 It was one of my favourite productivity features. I don't think I can live without that dictionary/thesaurus widget :(
FWIW: Sidecar Note: I'm facing the same problem many are with my 2014 iMac. Check out Astropad and Luna display which both work well for me and seem to be more than adequate alternatives based on what I've read about Sidecar: lunadisplay.com/pages/astropad
This guy is the smartest with the smartest reviews.
An you can’t scrub the audio in podcast app like in iTunes with magic mouse
Not fond of losing ITunes. Wish he would address whether ITunes will stay for those who don't update. I personally think having all content (music, movies, TV, etc) in one location is preferred. I'm not a streamer, prefer to own my music. Losing the Genius feature still pisses me off. Resurrect Stevie!
Amazing review. Updating right now. Thanks for everything you do sir!!
Phillip Probst Reminder has some pretty neat features like creating list s. You can add items like add Avocados to my grocery list. Also you can set a reminder to make calls ‘Remind me to call my mom when I get home.’
Please review the new eero three pack 😇
Yea sidecar looks super clean 👌🏾
I have lost Photoshop CS6, it cot me £ 450.00 in 2015. Do you think it is fear?
Wait....is this Vector?
LiquidAurum call if what you wanna call it. Imma freakin vector holic.
@@badopinion It was a joke that he didn't say "this is vector" at the beginning
Catalina is the first OS i have not installed on release date, going to wait until it has had a few updates first.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Then I realized that it would be months before I got done getting familiar with iOS 13... before I got around learning Catalina. This is better than Christmas, cause it lasts a lot longer!!
Same here. Many of my Apps from AppStore dont support 64bit currently... I dont want to lose tons of apps I paid for.
After dealing with iOS 13 bugs, I think I’ll play it safe and wait a while on updating MacOS
Same here, good idea.
i updated my macbook and the only real bug im experiencing so far is in the new "apple id" section in settings i constantly have a "you need to sign in again to make some services work" notification and no matter how many times i log in, it comes back. plus steam isnt compatible but thats the only thing that didnt come over for me and i assume itll be updated quickly. I have steam on my macbook but i rarely use it for gaming
@@ConLLee I've been dealing with a nightmare of my Apple ID Profile pic loading everytime I open System preference, most apps are buggy and but too buggy, battery drains faster than unusual, probably might clear up my RAM and Cache menu, maybe the next update will fix most of my problems
@@ConLLee this bug is present even in MacOS El Capitan! My 2007 iMac has the same bug! It's not a Catalina thing
Actually I think it’s always been a good idea to let the bleeding edge surfers to do at least half a year’s beta testing before “upgrading”
I’ve been trying to download it since last night, it keeps timing out every couple minutes. Anyone else having this issue?
I had to do it at 1am before it would work so basically that's your best option.
venom5809 I tried that too, it didn’t work. I don’t sleep and tried it several times in the middle of the night. I guess I’ll just keep trying. Thank you.
venom5809 It’s stuck at 511.5 mb then times out.
S. E. C-R is it on Ethernet?
Upgraded and it works great! Luckily my work docking station had a beta driver release that worked! Something I didn’t think of before hand.
Lol by any stretch of the pixels. You get a like for that.
always like to hear your perspective. thanks!
Why 21:9 with this kind of review, where I want to zoom in about detail? why not a 16:9 and bigger images?
upgrading as I am watching this video...the "gotcha" is its on a TEST machine at work! THEN I can see what breaks or not!
Damned !!! Half of the software stopped working !!!!
Goodbye forever carbon apps, we’ll miss you 😭
