  • Changing up the scenery this week & going back in time! I recently got my VERY first lathe out of my parents basement from when I started turning bowls 8 years ago & wanted to turn bowls the way I did back when I very first started turning & talk about some of the tools & lessons I have learned since then.

    That brings back memories. 3 years ago I started with a 1/2 HP Grizzly lathe that size with a set of old Craftsman cutters. That setup got me hooked on turning, and after a year using it, I loved woodturning so much, I stepped up to the bigger Grizzly G0766, 3 HP, 22" Swing x 42" spindle length. I learned a lot by watching videos like yours and others on RUclips. And since retiring last year, woodturning keeps me busy! Thanks for this and all your videos!

      Your start sounds just about exactly how I started! Once I got the hang of turning bowls I was ready for a bigger lathe which is when I bought my jet a little under a year later I believe. I also just took to RUclips to learn, I dont know what I wouldve done without it lol But thank you for the kind words!

    I got into turning about 6 years ago when I turned 40. My first lathe was a little RIkon Midi lathe that I got from Highland Woodworking. Like you, I invested in the slow speed grinder with a wolverine jig and one day added a CBN wheel. One day a nice lady asked if she could buy some of my bowls...next thing I knew I had a Laguna 1836. I turn hollow forms mostly but I really enjoy watching you turn your big natural edge bowls!

      I think its smart to start with a midi especially if you were like me and unsure if wood turning was something you were going to enjoy. I had never turned before I bought mine but I am sure glad I did. But thats how it starts, woodturning definitely has the snowball effect! lol

    I started out very similar. Brought back memories of changing the belt on my little Jet. It did the job though. 👍

      This was very nostalgic for me as well! But not having a reverse and the lowest RPM being 750 really made me appreciate my 18/36 though lol

    I bought my lathe about a week ago, same size as yours, so I'm looking forward to setting it up for use after I get the workshop in order.I found you to be most informative and you've helped me alot in understanding how to go about turning.Many thanks.😊👍

    Awesome video. I’m fairly new to turning but your video puts things into perspective for everyone. I think I mentioned that I have a Laguna. 1216. Fit’s my shop and was within my budget. I’m looking at getting the bed extension in the next week or so. Part of the reason I got the lathe I did was because I can add on to fit my style of turning and stay within the budget. I can relate to everything you said. Keep the videos coming. I’ll watch em all. And it’s always a great day to do a little turning.

      Modern lathes I think are getting a lot better with customizing & offering more for less. I remember when I first got into turning, it seemed like you were sort of stuck with what you bought unless you did some modifying on your own but now it seems companies are offering so many different add-ons and I love it. Have fun with the extension & if you haven't bought it yet then I highly recommend it! Would be curious to see what you can turn on it with the 12/16

      @@andrewmccarn Laguna makes two different extensions for the 1216. One is 20 inches long and the other one is 10. What I really like about my lathe is that I can outboard turn on the left side of the headstock. That’ll give me 20 inches over the bed swing. I’ll keep you posted on what decision I make.

    Hi Andrew. I just saw this vid that you posted a fair while ago. Brilliant way to answer the "how did you start" question. I loved the little chuckle when you turned on the old lathe for the first time in many years, obviously brought back memories.... good and bad.
    I think I heard the Laguna say...."Seriously?!"😂

      This video was definitely a trip down nostalgia lane for me! I don't think I had turned this lathe on since I had upgraded. And yeah, I felt some side eyes from the laguna! lol

    Love the video...ok I love all of your videos. I love your turning style and the art you create. Thank you for reminding us it is always more about the artist than the tools. I am a retired photographer who is about to begin my wood working/turning journey.

      I appreciate you watching them! And exactly! I have had the same turning tools since I started, its more about learning the process and how they work versus how nice they are. Granted, nice tools do make turning a little easier though. lol Good luck on your journey, one of the best choices I made was to learn how to turn!

      @@andrewmccarn I went to my mom's house this week and picked up an old Delta Rockwell Homecraft lathe that was my grandfather's. It was made in 1948. That thing is in great condition and runs smooth. I can't wait to learn how to use it. I have to build a heavy duty stand for it.

    Nice video! I started out with a bench top lathe the same same size made by Rockler. I think it's made by the same manufacturer as yours. Didn't take me too long to wanta make larger bowls! I learned a lot from using it though!👍😁

    Andrew thank you for this … I’m hoping to start turning this summer. Just a couple more purchase and some encouragement to start. I have been power carving in the mean time. Your videos are a joy to watch! Love the vibe and of course the acoustic instrumental. Is it your music or purchased? ❤

      @andrewmccarn  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the comment & the kind words! Thats very exciting but just a warning, when you start turning, those purchases will start to become more frequent! lol When I started & was finally getting the hang of it, I was ready to try all sorts of new tools and woods to turn. For my music, I just use Epidemic sound. They seem to be the easiest to use with RUclips and I have been using their site for a year now with no complaints!

    What kind of oil do you use

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  4 месяца назад +1

      I typically use tung oil or linseed oil depending on how I feel that day lol sometimes I just stick with mineral oil and beeswax too.
