When I was a young teen I was playing his album in my room blasting Up Against The Wall, and my father came in my room and broke my record in half. I was so upset about it I glued the album back together.
Thanks for posting. This interview took place before John was killed. David was like a father to me. When I took him to the hospital on friday morning March 31st., both of us had no idea he would not get out alive. Still in shock. I feel his spirit left the body Sunday night April 2nd but they kept his body alive until Thurs. April 6th. They screwed up some medical procedures in the V.A. hospital that I feel had to do with his passing unfortunately. As his proxy I received calls asking permission to treat him for the screw ups they made. I was livid. Can't go back now. I know he is resting in peace, a very spiritual man deep inside.
Hi Joff- still, it's a good thing he called you. Otherwise he might have been 'discovered" in his apartment, like Kenny Kirkland. Also, after much thinking on it, a better way to go than cancer. We all gotta go... I met Dave in 1994, at the Libertarian Convention in Albany..He was deceptively smart;(did computer editing in the 60s) and had an "elephant's memory" for everyone in the Village and show business. RIP Mr. Mayor!
today i woke up again with one of the marajuana song on my mind from my older sisters albumn i woud sneak to giggle at 6 yrs old.. to this day- and im 57- the songs from that albumn come in my mind often! wish he saw how many of his hopes came true ! the internet has some evils but blessings too and its a blessing to again listen to these songs, or play them to friends and my adult kids....for too many years i felt nobody remebered these songs but me!( not even my sister!) now i can share them!
He was a true New Yorker; an iconoclast, and a very funny guy. I'll miss him. Saw him last on the 6 train, on his way to see the newly reformed NY Dolls down in Battery Park City like us. It was a blast. Great music shared with real people -- can't beat it. Rock In Perpetuity, David.
I was 14 yrs old in 1970 and heard "have a marijuana" coming from a record shop in Hialeah, Fl. I went in bought the record and have been a fan ever since.
I was friends with David. He was a wonderful person. David was always busy trying to sing his messages. I met John Lennon and Yoko through him. We all miss him very much!
I was a young teenager and lived in the States at the time in New York. I can remember so many times the days passed with Dave, Harold and other band members whose names I cannot remember and of course my good friend Phyllis. The guys would play in Washington Square Park and Phyllis would pass the hat most of the time (I did occasionly). This of course was before he was famous. Fond childhood memories.
David Peel where ever you are I knew you from the Washington Square Park when I was living there in 1975 at 234 Thompson Street (5th. Ave. cont.) corner of 3rd. I used to spend a lot of my free time with my guitar on the park and you with your guitar and friends singing your songs, I remember your blue jean jacket with the British flag in the back....those were happy days. R.I.P
David looks very young here. Anyone have a date on this interview? New York isn't the same without him. He was fabric of the city. I knew him since 1965. RIP David. We all miss you.
On March 31, 2017 Peel was escorted to the Veterans Administration hospital in Manhattan New York by fellow musician Joff Wilson, after complaining that he was not feeling well. He immediately suffered a series of three heart attacks upon his arrival. Peel died at the hospital on April 6, 2017. He was buried with full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery Wading River New York Section 53 Grave 3208 on April 17, 2017. (From Wikipedia)
I was a 13 year old runaway in Washington Square Park the weekend of Woodstock. David Peele didn't make it either. I spent that weekend at Peele's crazy funky apartment on the lower east side. They fed me every drug in the book. At 2AM, a naked David Peele tried to get under the blanket with me. I freaked. He said "I thought you were gay!" I said "Gay! I'm not happy at all! I'm PISSED!" I still haven't queered off. RIP David Peele...
Knew Dave many years. Always exchanged Christmas cards......Listen to 'American Revolution', album.....an absolute blue print for future punk rock. Certainly influenced The Clash........Dave once showed me a photo of himself in his military uniform. That would surprise people. Studied accounting at NYU........Interesting guy!!!!
"Lennon for president"...very interesting interview..thank you for sharing..Davids music always make me smile...he's in heaven singing "marijuana"with John ,...

Even in the losers lounge at the Riverside Casino in Laughlin NV there's a picture of him . This really blows my mind I've been listening to his musical charm since the early days . He's expressed his ideas since day one he's been there and done that . He belongs in the rock and roll hall of fame.Maybe protests are not commercial but since when has rock been anything but getting a message out to others of the same mind set. Yes who phrased "up against the wall ".first anyways?

I first encounteted him with GG Allin - singing about f'king kids! Strange type of hero...
He told me that "All we are saying is give peace a chance" was his chant and that John Lennon borrowed it.
The Lower East Side record with everyone crossing the Delaware is one of the best Rock LPs of the 60s
