I love the book simply because its just an excuse for the writer to draw Transformers doing wrestling moves. While I like the IDW comics, the Skybound comic has a way better start and doesn't feel like a toy commercial. I wonder how this comic is gonna look 5 years down the line and if we will still be on earth.
Dang, I dunno if we’ll even still be on Earth in the next issue 👀
I think we’re getting an Energon Universe Special issue in May set on Cybertron before the Autobots leave. And Elite One should make her debut in issue 8 mmmmaaaybe and she’s most likely out there in space doing space stuff.
I absolutely love how DWJ draws Starscream.
Just the sheer sadism in Screamer's smile is downright chilling.
Which makes it even more satisfying when Starscream eventually gets crushed underneath Devastator.
Absolutely he is a maniac
Fun fact: DWJ modeled the Optimus design in this series off of his Magic Square Light of Peace
I bet he uses it to get pose references too, that’s a really smart idea
@@Gei4Mei theres livestreams of him posing the figure... he did for sure, and its great, its also cool that its clear he has an understanding of the culture that exists in the transformers base
This is the first TF comic I've been able to catch as it came out and God did I pick a good one.
I know you avoided spoilers but I just have to say one of my favorite moments is Optimus getting Megatron's arm! It's so badass!
I sprinkled a few hints as to what happens in the video 🤫 its a really cool moment tho
Everyone talks about Optimus's portrayal in this comic, and while that's great, I really love this version of Starscream. While a lot of other versions either focus on his cowardice or manipulative side (if not straight up take him in a new direction like with Armada), this version really shows how evil and heartless he can be, even compared to Megatron. This is probably the most despicable Starscream's ever been, and it really makes you sympathize well with the Decepticons a lot surprisingly, since they're pretty much stuck with a toxic, uncaring leader.
Yes, shockingly it makes you sympathize with them, knowing that they have to deal with such a oppressive person. That’s why I love that last scene in issue six with Soundwave.
The moment in issue six between Optimus and Soundwave where he offers him a truce in order to save their home togetherrr… THAT’S the Optimus Prime I think about when I picture him in my mind. A gentle leader who doesn’t want to rip anybodies face off. Unlike most of his depictions in live action, including most recently. Im reading 24 titles including the Energon Universe and Transformers is the one I look forward to reading the most. The praise for it is real and so deserved.
Oh my God that scene was like the cherry on top of this arc, like despite everything Optimus would still choose peace first. And I felt like if Soundwave had stayed, it would’ve been just as believable, considering how Starscream was treating. But I’m sure his loyalty to Megatron is what won out in the end
@@Gei4Mei Totally! Yeah, I can’t wait to see where this goes. Great video, man!!! So happy you covered it and are getting the word out. PIGLETS4LIFE
Thank you I was looking foward to read some TF comics, glad you made this review!
Go check em out rn this instant 😳
@@Gei4Mei 🏴☠Ay Ay!
I definitely am enjoying the book a lot, and am looking forward to seeing where it goes. At the moment, it's a bit tough to explain my thoughts on the book, particularly as it's very action-focused and the plot has only just begun, but I do feel a bit mixed overall with what's been put out so far. I've already read the grand majority of TF comics and am in general a huge TF nerd, so while the comic so far is very well done, I'm left yearning a bit for something that breaks the mold a bit more. Not necessarily in just the character designs, I'm fine with that; Marvel, Dreamwave, and IDW all had very G1 designs. But rather, I hope the plot goes in more ambitious directions beyond simply "a remixed tale of the G1 toon and Marvel's setup". Because from my perspective, even while being explicitly G1-based, both Marvel and Dreamwave also took big steps to differentiate themselves from the 80s cartoon in their narratives, not just IDW. They have their own, strong identities all their own. In not only comics but shows and the movies, Transformers has been doing "the G1 setup but more serious" for the better part of 20 years now, with all kindsa varying degrees of, well, splintering off in their own directions.
From the comics, to the anime, to the western shows and the movies, the one thing that's made me value TF so much has been its ability to completely and totally reinvent itself, the sheer capacity for creativity that the writers and artists have been able to show, so when something plays it relatively safe I'm left feeling like there's something missing, a bit. (On that note, Skybound Spike and Carly are very different characters from the G1 show, which I think is really cool and I'm glad; but then, I have to wonder why they needed to be named Spike and Carly at all, if they have nothing in common with their actual G1 selves? If this were any other TF comic or show, they would have definitely been renamed. Even the Bay films had the decency to name the main character Sam instead of Spike. Even Marvel originally started off with a blonde "Buster" Witwicky and only introduced Spike when the toyline demanded it. You know?)
I can definitely see what you mean, I agree I am expecting the series to be doing something new by the time it hits its proper stride. For me personally what I appreciate above all is the attention to the characters, and I mainly hope that that stays consistent throughout this run.
In a lot of ways, this series reminds me of transformers, animated in that it’s made by people that have a genuine appreciation of the franchise, and just want to share their love. I think that this Optimus prime is probably the best one that we’ve had written in comics for a very, very long time. He’s heroic and he owns up to the mistakes that he makes he makes and improves. I also think it’s smart that the author didn’t flood the reader with jargon and deep lore. I think they went with his G1 aesthetic to bring people back in. It’s like saying say hey, we’re back to basics if you didn’t like what was previously done, but even by the end of arc one things are on a completely different trajectory than G1. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the director Skybound will take this series
I can absolutely feel the love in this series, it makes me so happy to be a fan
These comics have been awesome so far. Also gibe carly GF.
I’m so excited to see where we go next 👀
4:58 LARIATOOOO (DWJ's previous work was wrestling comic Do A Powerbomb, highly recommend to read it as well)
Yeah my friend is a huge fan of DWJ and he recommended all of his work to me. I’ll probably check it out soon
Please do this for each new issue- genuinely loved this format for you!
That would be cool, maybe I could do them as shorts or something
@@Gei4MeiI would definitely watch that! :D
I started reading the book kind of precariously as I never had any interest in reading IDW cause of the intimidatingly expansive library. But once I started the book I couldn’t put it down, and it took me right back to my childhood floor, watching the 86 movie with my sparse movie toys.
That moment in issue #6 with spark plug really hit me like a ton of bricks and reminded me why I love this series so much after going through hell collecting the toys 😭 thank you DWJ, for bringing back my friends.
You can really tell that he’s a fan, just like us, he wants to see this just as much as we do
@@Gei4Mei For realll, btw I’m so glad you made this video. I was getting kinda desperate rewatching moonbases videos over and over again 😭 thanks for making this one, Gei :)
G4M; insightful figure reviewer?
G4M; insightful REVIEWER. PERIOD.
Best look at the comics I’ve seen, appreciating the writing and art appropriately.
It’s stuff like this that annoys me with how terrible ROTB was. The writer for that got paid WAY more than Daniel Warren Johnson, but for all intents and purposes, this is what peak Transformers looks like. If you adapted this first arc into an animated movie, you’d be selling out theatres.
I can literally only dream of something like that 😭 Thanks for the kind words
A little late but glad to see these type of different videos. I need to buy these comics but seeing reviews and all that get me more hyped to actually read these! Good job lad :3
Great video. This is the only comic book I've actually been excited go to a comic shop monthly for.
Thanks 😮 I get mine on Kindle, there aren’t any comic stores close by unfortunately
Thanks for the recommend! Went straight to the comics after watching this vid and it's my fave transformers media in a long long time. Grateful for hearing about it
Great review! Made me finally go check out the comic--it is quite good!
I’m glad ☺️ my main goal was to try to convince people to read the series and it seems like I was successful!
Love the skybound transformers comics, great video 😊👏
I am liking this take on Optimus, it's going back to his roots.
It’s surprisingly refreshing to see an Optimus whose writing isn’t embittered by irony
I love DWJ's comics! When I heard he was taking over Transformers I couldn't believe it! And it did not dissapoint!
It’s so good, I have to go check out his other stuff soon
It's so amazing reading a comic in the 2020s that is actually about the characters and the battle between good and evil and not about everyone's sexuality
It’s like they realised people want to buy comics for comic action, not a screen cap for a Big Bang Theory wannabe sitcom Netflix show. A medium made for grand and large scale ideas including spaceships of impossible shapes like Galactus’ ship.
IDW did stilize designs a lot, but unlike with the movies, you could still recognize the characters as who they were.
But this series has started amazingly. I do hope that, over time, we see not G1 characters in this universe, like Windblade, Rodimus Prime, Bulkhead, Lugnut, Clobber, Knockout, Tarn, Impactor, Star Saber, THunderhowl, etc.
And I trust the writers to do them all perfectly.
Yeah, I have faith in this team. They’ve said they wanna eventually branch out from hard G1, so we just gotta wait and see where it goes
Eeeeehmmmm lad rodimus prime, star saber and impactor they are g1 characters. Also tarn and windblade too….. to some extent.
@@АрсенийВасильев-и8ъ Rodimus, true. Impactor and Star Saber, depends on how much you stretch the definition of G1... I have seen people stretch it to Optimus Primal though. Tarn and Windblade are IDW characters. I like them both, though, and they work well in a G1 inspired setting.
Man makes comic reviews too.0 regret I subbed
I can’t really guarantee this will be a mainstay on the channel going forward, but I am sort of testing the waters to see if my audience would like to see me review more transformers media in the future. I had planned to review at least one more comic and one or two movies.
@@Gei4Mei I think people more jive with your personality and stye of vids. As long as it's the same nature you can review drywall for waht people care.
I'm honestly very surprised by the general quality on display here, it's been a while since i've been legitimately excited for a transformers comic series but here we are.
I hate waiting for every issue 🥺
@@Gei4Mei SAME
What a great overview! Any chance we'll ever see your thoughts on Tom Scioli's Transformers vs. G.I. Joe? That book was the closest I've come to my wonderment as a child playing with cool transforming robots.
I haven’t actually read that one, but I could definitely check it out at some point 😉
I have to get this comic series, Like seriously some of the art work goes so hard!!!!!!.....And yes that's what she said
Yeah pick it up as soon as possible 👀
@@Gei4Mei I'm going to my local comic book store soon....I'm definitely going to try and pick up the full series
They ripped skywarp apart. That shit was.....interesting
They turned his ass into a computer 😭

Also Mei called us PIGLETS XD
Thank you for the blessed content
🙏
You’re welcome lol I always forget about the piglets thing, so I’m trynna bring it back
@@Gei4MeiWe'll wear it with a badge of honor and honestly your stuff makes my day so it's always a treat to see it in my sub box.
I’m glad u enjoyed it ☺️
Truly PEAKformers
The peak, the apogee, the zenith
Wouldn't be great if this gets an animated adaptation, much the same way Japan adapts manga? Full circle.
That would be cool, but we wouldn’t see that for a couple of years probably. I really wish they would try to adapt some of the Marvel stories ngl 👀
Target 2006, Space Pirates and Time Wars would floor the entire G1 for Adults shows that we’ve had for the last few years.
the deer scene? like the one from the iron giant?
I’ve heard that comparison, I actually haven’t seen the Iron Giant in a long time so I don’t remember it lol
I’m looking forward to the Dinobots.
I really wonder how they’re going to handle them in this series
Bruh that windblade art lmao
If you’re happy clap your hands- Starscream
Its such a brutal way to go 😱
Okay, but does it have Texan Mark Wahlberg telling Optimus Prime what SOVL is in a pure Bostonian accent?
It has exactly none of that lmao
Skybound feels so goddamn peak compared to IDW. It gives me Dreamwave vibes so far.
I love the Cobra Commander miniseries as well, it's wonderful to see too.
It really feels meaningful for transformers fans to see that these books are so intertwined with each other
Do you think you could do a spoiler Review too? I unfortunately don't think I'll be able to buy the book for myself, so a full in-depth review would be quite helpful
I would like to, but it would be a very big undertaking and I’m still not sure if I’ve really come to understand everything that I want to about this first story. So if I did, it wouldn’t be anytime soon.
Honestly, don’t be afraid to just find a place to read it online; you can always pick up the trade at some point in the future. Supporting the series financially is very important, but reading it and talking about it is just as important I think.
I read them, and I thought they were fairly well written!
They’re so good I can’t wait to pick up the trade version
@@Gei4Mei same
Wreckless Optimism does sound like it would be a flaw to a character named Optimus prime.
I thought it was a pretty clever way to put it lol
Thats quite the endorsement if i ever heard of one
Its a really good book!
Why does Screamer kick cats? 😢
Cause he’s an asshole!
3:29 IDW Soundwave (or G1 Soundwave) would’ve killed Starscream for kicking Ravage like that.
Sooo cliff jumpers in a series welp let's see how he dies
Is it back? Transformers never left
Nah, we back 😤
@@Gei4Mei wait do you mean the comics are back that would make sense
What Happened To Arcee?!
She’s in it a little bit, but I didn’t show show too many later issue shots to avoid spoilers
Ok is it wrong for me to say that skybound starscream is more like g1 skywarp
There is a deceptive complexity to drawing G1 blocky bots in a way that keeps them so distinct and dynamic.
the illustrator of this comic is a master of his craft without question, especially with how much it contrasts with their battle damage which is often composed of complex lines and wiring.
such a great artstyle, I know that's nothing new for Transformer comics but this one just feels like a cut above the rest.
Its high quality all around
He'll ye more gei5jay
Just a little something for the oomfs
The “dirtiness” of the artwork is a real turnoff for me.
I think that’s part of the appeal, its a part of the artstyle!
I hope that they stay on Earth. I am tired of cybertron. Transformers transform into cars that is their hole gimick. Idw already covered the origin of the war and did a great job. I would like to se more human transformer interactions. Especiqly after issue 6
I understand this is baller, but I gotta read “I admire magical girls” first
Well, it’ll be here when you’re ready 🫡
Transformers fans' standards are too damn low, man
will say that I wasn't too on board with this more gritty aesthetic at first, I thought it was pulling a tf prime where death was for pure shock value and not enhancing the story but after a while it started becoming clear that the writer was Cooking with the krabby patty secret formula, and I don't want him to stop
only two problems I have is with Skywarp and the humans, not gonna spoil it but the way Skywarp was handled at the end specifically made no sense and really had me distracted on that specific part
and personal nitpick with the comic is, why did they make Carly's design so, *defined?* I can't be the only one who sees it right? It's not cause / a perv! I refuse to be a perv
Spoilers: the fact that the artist went out of his way to put in the touch reference at the end by going"You know the song" is hilariously entertaining
I don’t know I guess Carly is just a really tough girl 🤔
I just don't wanna be the only one who sees it. Cause then I'll be worried
Everything about this book is amazing except for how Starscream is written. The only quality he has in common with his g1 counterpart is his cruelty but up to 11, outside of that he’s very shallow and lacking all the other great elements that make starscream really likeable.
They had a really cool, interesting idea In starscream leading for a good tenure without megatron but they completely wasted it.
No they didn’t you clearly don’t understand it.
I think the intention with Starscream is to show that he isn’t likable and that not even the Decepticons he’s leading really respect him. I agree it is definitely a far cry from how I know him in G1, but in my opinion, he was usually defined by his dynamics with Megatron, and with Megatron gone we’re seeing him floundering around on his own.
@@deniseg9210 I disagree with you, I think you don’t get it 🤷
@@PixelKappa_HD no it’s you. Starscream has been written great so far.
@@Gei4MeiYeah, that part I understand I just wish they had played into his other qualities more. I’d have liked to have seen more of his guile or scientific background come into its full own without fear of Megatron around. Like I’d have loved to seen Starscream genuinely grow as a leader for better or worse. Something familiar but also new for him.
It’s not that he’s failing as leader it’s how they’ve gone about it. He’s just been kill, kill, kill the entire time and I feel like that’s such a boring, shallow take. Compare his actions in any episode where he’s working as a solo agent in G1 or in “The Starscream Brigade” They could have made his tenure much more interesting. I guess he might finally get some character development after issue 7 and begin a new arc hopefully but if not this is easily my least favorite version of the character.
There’s a bit of bias as he’s my favorite character of course but I still think they’ve made him in likable just to prop up Soundwave who looks to be leading next. If the rest of the book weren’t so good I might have put it down.
Is this a sponsored review? You're far too generous to this book. They land on earth and the ensuing 6 issues are one continuous battle scene. There is no plot. I like the g1 grounding, i like the shock value. But there's no story unfolding. And that last thing in issue 6 that will remain unspoiled was idiotic.
Its very action oriented, I don’t consider that a problem tho. Its a simple story and its fast paced. I wish it was sponsored tho lmao
9:08 “Finest storytelling… probably ever.” Wow. You CLEARLY have never read IDW’s “More Than Meets The Eye” run because there’s no way this six issue arc can objectively or even subjectively hold up to the storytelling and character development arcs in that book, comparatively.
I’ve read all of IDW and MTMTE twice through. I was making a general statement about the storytelling across the franchise, not just in the medium of comics. I specifically avoiding drawing too many comparisons to IDW because I wanted to talk about this series on its own merits. But even then I only had kind things to say about IDW in this video, so please don’t assume you understand my position because of one statement I made.
This series while looking good, it sort of lost my intrest. They always do anymore, but they killed off Bumblebee again.
That scene was so good tho 🥺
I just want them to treat my boy right he keeps dieing :(
I honestly kinda think he’ll be back eventually, like they’ll repair him with the original toy’s face plate
@@Gei4Meiwell Daniel Warren Johnson said if they do revive Bumblebee he won’t be alive for very long.
There is way too much Bee in everything, it's nice to get a break
