I live in Oregon in the Portland area, and my sister-in-law lives in Salem. I had no idea this was happening. This is devastating to hear. Every city should have a library.
To highlight another reason why this is so important: Salem's library circulates books and textbooks between its facility and libraries and community colleges in the surrounding areas. This would cripple the library system for several cities and would likely lead to rural libraries closing. I lived in one of those rural areas for years and that program helped me get through my associates, this has me tearing up 🥲
This is the kinda of thing that can lead to an awful domino effect, and in one of our more progressive states. Terrifying steps. Thank you for sharing the info!

@@ReadswithRachel thank you so much. I can’t imagine living in a city without a library. It was a part of my childhood and is now a part of my child’s life. The library is what got me into reading. Everyone please send emails 🫶
Thank you for sharing this! I just recently started watching your vids, I’m an Oregonian and actually had no idea this was happening. That’s awesome to see your concern all the way from the east coast!
i emailed all the salem city councilors and i actually got a response from one of them today! maybe more forthcoming. because this isn’t on a federal level, it’s a lot more likely that the councilors will personally be reading these communications. we can all make a difference here!
Public libraries are so important and redirecting funds to police so they can make the unhoused people who often need the benefits of a library would be a slap in the face, WTH. Thanks for spreading the word!
I watched your video on speaking publicly on the book banning topic and i just wanted to say that you were so brave and smart it was so inspiring and a breath of fresh air to see.
Libraries are legitimately safe havens…they can get RID of safe havens to fund the police out of all things? Not like schools or public transportation?
I lived in Douglas County, Oregon when the 2016 ballot held the vote to shut down the county libraries to save tax dollars, and while it very narrowly didn't pass, ten branch libraries, including the one I volunteered at for nearly three years, closed down before the main library also closed down. They were reopened under non-county funding within the next three-ish years. Jackson and Josephine county had their libraries close in 2007, and while they're still open (again, under non-county funding) it's absolutely humiliating to see Oregon mismanaging their library systems. Libraries are sources of community, knowledge, support, and open access technology and shelter for those who may need it, and I'm genuinely disgusted to see my state continue to remove funds from libraries to fund their police. We have to be loud, especially those of us who remember what the Portland Police did (and does) to peaceful protestors.
This is one of the most infuriating things I’ve heard in a while. Defunding something as important as a public library, a free source of knowledge, and diverting funds instead to a system that was already overfunded. America at its finest.
I would be really interested to see a video about how America went from being one of the places with free public libraries, to now defunding their libraries.
could someone from outside of the US still msg the ppl? I am a public librarian so just the idea of people losing the access to this?? is terrifying even from outside the US
Ah yes, because mindless violence has always worked better than access to a wealth of knowledge...? Wtf is going on with these people istg. There isn’t even a “what’s next” joke to be made, because this is literally already the furthest you can go in dumbassery 🙄
What did you think? That literature wonder that won the goodreads award of best romantasy (the first in that category) had the 2nd before half of the readers read the first book, to prove, quality doesn’t matter. This is the 3rd book’s title.
i sent some emails! i don’t live in oregon but i love my public library. it’s a safe space for me and many others. they even host movies in the auditorium. i’m rooting for you guys.

THE POLICE REALLY THEM!??
Books are so important!
Public access to knowledge and education is so important.
Just got done sending a big message to everyone. So sick of people disrespecting my profession. Im not gonna stand for it anymore.
I grew up in Oregon. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. And to divert money to the POLICE of all things??? SMH.
Of course it’s going to the police…

This is heartbreaking. I grew up using the library. Can you put the city email in the description so I can email them?

The fuck? That’s insane they’re even thinking of defunding
The way I actually gagged because not only are they taking money from books, but they are giving that money to police!! It actually makes me so sick

I was born and grew up in Oregon...this'll be embarrassing if it goes ahead. Thanks for advocating for the PNW from the other side of the country 🌲
Any time!

I don’t think I can do anything from outside the US other than boost this video with engagement

Getting rid of public libraries for more police. Ugh

Yeah, because the police totally need more funding in Oregon. 😮💨
Oh my God! I hope they don't cut it!

HELPPP THEY RESPONDED TO ME???? They said “we saved the library for a year” 😭😭 oh no
Onyx shouldn't be in storms. Books and libraries are more important than police.
