BMW Emergency Call System Not Available - Sorted

- In this video I am dealing with the error message on the dashboard - Emergency Call System Not Available. Car can still be driven, but you are unable to see miles driven and fuel consumption. This is caused by battery failure from the Telematics unit located in the back of the vehicle, under the roof. It's quite common issue across all BMW range and also same type of battery is shared across multiple BMW models.
The most common source of this problem is is that the battery us simply discharged if the vehicle has not been used for a while. Try to charge the main battery with the car battery charger or run the car for couple hours to give the battery chance to recharge. If that doesn't help, then simply this small battery doesn't hold enough charge to satisfy the Telematic Unit Requirements and needs to be replaced.
Remove C + B pillar covers. Remove side cover from the back of the vehicle and detach clips at the back of the panorama window. This will give you enough space to reach out to the unit, open battery compartment and replace the battery.
Spectacular over engineering by BMW
More like shite engineering. The access to that location is terrible. Just stick the damn module in the boot somewhere.
Does anyone think it’s about time BMW done a record and sorted this problem out
Yes by calling people for service and handing out invoice to pay :)
Hi, I have the same problem with my M5 F90. Today I removed the battery, it is an 8 volt battery and when I measured the battery it showed 8.1 volts. Is the problem still the battery or something else? Did you measure your old battery too? Thanks
Further to my post below. After replacing the battery I was very disappointed that the Emergancy Call System did NOT disappear. However if this happens to you, don’t despair, thinking you’ve been sold a duff battery. I drove the car for approx 50miles and guess what, the warning disappeared from the dash and from the faults. It seems the battery needed charging.
Thank you 👍
Same happened the error stayed. Will try driving it tomorrow and keep you posted 🤞

Hi, i have same car ,same problem🙂. I will buy this battery and I hope to fix it. Its very stressful this error. Thank you very much mate.👍
Nice video thank you for making!
Wouldn't you think BMW would make an access door over the unit to service this part of the car. They know this is going to happen and will happen on every car every three years. What a bunch of BS to go through to change a going to fail battery
This will be my last BMW
Service department also needs to regular customers :D. I am getting X3 with same problem so I post video later
@@tiptopmechanic1155 Yes but building in failures so you can financially rape customers is unacceptable.
FYI
Changed the battery on my 2018 520D Touring, pleased to say that on the estate I just moved rear window rubber in centre at rear down to get to the headlining, 2 pop in clips ,gently ease open using wide flat blade screwdriver and ease down a few cm
Then just unclip the 2 speaker covers in the roof which is luckily just to the rear of the battery compartment, gained access from RH side speaker hole, so pretty simple in comparison to the saloon I guess because of aerial position.
I called the dealership today in Luton ( UK ). They told me 62 pounds for the part and 288 for the labor. So I will do it myself to save 300 pounds. I will buy only the battery from BMW because on ebay or other websites is between 30 and 60 pounds, but are unbranded. Now is up to you if you wanna spend 20-30 pounds extra for an original one or not.
Thank you very much for the video . I've got the same with the same problem appeared. Called the dealer and quoted £400.
Hopefully with your detailed guidance I can safe few hundreds
How do you clear the memory?
I have done that as well change the battery but the fault is still on my dashboard how can I clear it please
Same problem
Hi bro I have same problem how did you solved ?
Mine didn’t go off for about two or three days, so just keep running around in your car and it should go eventually hope that can help
Getting this replaced by the dealer under warranty for the second time in two years. Is it just a battery that doesn't recharge properly? I'm just curious of what I needed to do if this happens again outside of the warranty.
Above the SOS button and easy to remove with a couple screws would have being a much better design.
It takes the Dealer an entire day to replace it but you said 40 minutes which is terrible on their part, fortunately I got a loaner each appointment.
Thanks for the Video.
How long I need to wait for recharged battery ? I’ve still had sos notification 😮
Dod you fix it?
The battery is not just for emergency call in case of an accident. The battery is used to access the TCU for all the remote functions. If you have the My BMW app in your phone, the battery is used every time you open the app. If you use the remote 3D view a lot to take location pictures of your parked car, the battery will probably last less than w years.
Thank you for this information.
when the battery is dead, do the apps stop updating ? actually, I have no network connection and I would like to confirm if it can comes from a battery issue ?
Can you still start and drive the car with the message on? This is happened to me as well. Does it affect the main battery as well as the Telematics battery?
What is the name of that battery?
I replace the tcu and had it reprogram, after couple storms in my area the emergency call message came back and the orange ligtht on the button is off.
I checked the battery in the tcu and had some rust like water damage,my question here is how do I seal the fin from preventing to happen again?
how did you clear the error, can it be done with bimmerlink?
What car was this? I have the same problem with my G31 and BMW want £500+ to change a £51 battery (and even £51 is too much for a battery!)

Hi there, very informative videro. My 2021 x3mc has shown this message 3 days ago then cleared after a few minutes, it's then done the same today and again cleared after a few minutes. I can only assume the battery is at the end of its cycle? I'm hoping this if indeed is the problem will be covered under warranty? My concern is iv had my roof wrapped and they may try to blame this as antenna was off in order to say it won't be covered under warranty. Thoughts on this? Tia.
Yes sounds like battery has some juice left amd charges up and then it's gone if the vehicle stays without power/engine running.
To be honest antenna has nothing to do with the battery as during wrapping process you didn't even touch that battery compartment. I guess it depends from the dealer. Try few of them and will see.
@@tiptopmechanic1155 Many thanks for your reply, the fact its stating not available and clearing after a few minutes as opposed to malfunction is leading me to believe the battery is on its way out. I shall let you know how I get on.
Update on this issue...
The dealer done a remote diagnostic on my car with my permission, turns out the problem was a GPS fault. Strangley after doing this diagnostic, the error code hasn't shown again since.👍🏻
@@paulquinn4684 Thank you for info. I never heard about such solution but if it worked then great. Did you have to pay for it ?
My BMW dealer ran diagnostics and even though I was within the 3 yr warranty said I’d have to pay because the stats showed I had made to9 many short trips !!, £402 to fix.
Why TF would they put a consumable battery under the headliner. What the actual f*** were they thinking.
Hello, I armed myself with patience and changed the SOS battery to an X4-G02. Everything went perfectly until the end when I started the car and the SOS warning message continued to appear :). I mention that inside, where the unit is, everything is dry and clean and there are no traces of water. What to do? Does the message need to be reset from somewhere? Thank you in advance.
You nees to allow time to charge the battery. Diagnostic uilnit can clear that error

Where can I find the battery? Bmw dealer or where?

Would it be exactly the same on my x3 2018? Same battery same position?
Very useful video.
Thank you.
Anynoe know when I can buy one for
BMW G30?
I have just had this message appear on my 69 plate X3. I contacted Stratstone where I purchased the car asking for an estimate to replace the Telematics battery. They were very cagey and reluctant to give any idea on cost. I pressed them and they came up with a price between £1000 and £1500. This is outrageous for a part that they know will fail every 3 to 4 years. Why didn't they just put a removable flap over the unit to make it accessible. Just after our money.
It was a trick to get rid of you. They just don't want to do the job.
Hi, i have this problem with my 2018 bmwx1, the sos emergency call failed light shows up on dashboard for 3/4 days then dissappears for weeks then appears again for about 3/4 days again. Anyone know the estimated cost of this to be repaired please . Cheers
I was quoted approx £130 for Stratstone bmw to diagnose the fault and between £300 and £400 to repair / replace the telematics battery. Bought a new battery from same dealership for £62. Question, do I have to charge the new battery before “ no Emergancy “ warning disappears ?
Somebody above stated that they had to drive the car for about 50 miles before the message went away. I assume this was the time required for the battery to become charged.
Is the battery in the same place for a 2019 x5? Thanks
No it's in boot, standing at rear it's on left hand side, remove trim and you can see metal box battery is there
It's 30 min job
@LondonerUK64 thanks. Do you know where i can find a video or picture of where it is exactly? If not, can you give more details of how to remove trim, please? Thank you!

Make sure car is off, replace battery and put it back together start car all done

Leaving the battery baking up in the roof might explain why it only lasted 3 years
Thank you for your sharing, today I followed your steps, have solved the same problem, thank you

Hey I have changed my battery but the error is still there. Did you have to drive long for it to go away?
Thanks for the upload , great help
Do you Maybe know Where the sos battery is in BMW F10?? Having some issues
Should be in the trunk on left side.
Hello, thanks for your video. I have same problem of my X1. I will try to replace the battery by myself. The old battery is 450mAh 3.6wh but the new one is 330mAh 2.6wh. Is it ok?
Hi. I would say the battery needs to be same voltage otherwise it will throw error. I suggest to try to het one from dealer so if doesn't work you can claim failure with dealer.
Thank you for your reply.
Those data means, that the capacity of the battery is lower than the original battery which was installed. As long as you got 8V you are fine. it will just be empty faster than the battery with 450mAh.
Hi,
Is this the same for 2018 520i?
Thanks
Yes. Same location of the battery
@@tiptopmechanic1155 would it be covered under Warranty?
Do I have that in my 2004 545i? I’ve looked for weeks how to get rid of this “sos” message. Everything works in my car (besides the phone of course) radio works as well. I cannot figure this issue out.
Yes but your car might have the battery in the trunk in the side.

Have the same problem with my 2018 X3 (G01). The warning was present for most of last winter, disappeared in spring, through summer, and reappeared yesterday. I suspect the battery can't deal with the colder weather, and needs to be replaced. Anyone know roughly how much a main dealer will charge to change the battery?
Just called the dealer. Cost is £120 to diagnose the fault, then £419 for battery replacement..
Yep had the same issue with my 2019 X3 and the dealer wanted £402 to supply and fit…. Believe the battery is approx £65 so guess most of the cost is labour!!
Just left the dealer they wanted to charge over $500 to replace battery but like you mine works fine in warm weather.
From what I understand dear stand, it’s a problem for many with water leaking through the fin on the roof hence why it is fine all summer and does it every winter. I have my X5 booked into an auto-electrician BMw specialist tomorrow to have it coded out.
Just been asked £499 by Halliwell Jones Warrington today 7/12/23 when after questioning they admitted the battery was approximately £50. They also said my car needed 6 litres of Ad-Blue when I’d filled it before I sent it in, in anticipation of them claiming it would require Ad-Blue amongst other repairs they claimed it required but clearly didn’t…. Go figure 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Hi I have put the new battery in put the message is still there how do I reset it from the idrive.. thanks
Hi - Did it eventually clear or did you take it to the garage to be cleared?
The emergency call system on our 2019 230i has malfunctioned several times; now our local BMW dealer has diagnosed the problem as a crimped coax cable. I believe them, this time. It will require dismantling the car to replace the cable harness, but that’s BMW’s problem.
My F90 has just thrown up this error. What a stupid design having to remove all that trim for a battery which obviously wasn't of sufficient quality in the first place. The car is only 6 mths out of warranty but I bet I know what the dealer will say.
Very useful, thank you
Hoping that someone can help i took my battery for the telematics and its an 8v battery im guessing but i tested with a multimeter and its giving me readings of 15v did somebody encounter the same thing?thanks

Diagnostic software & hardware. Optionally run the car for few days ao battery has enough time to recharge irself.
Did it goes away after driving?
@@MrMaveric84 No, it didn't, so I went and got the error message reset at the local garage. Even after paying for that and the battery and doing the work myself I was still £400 better off than taking it to bloody BMW! So glad this video got posted

My car needs this and I almost traded it in.
