    7:54 This is how a cabrio should be - like a (fast) walk in the country. You can hear the birds tweeting, the smells etc without being drowned out by the noise of an engine. I think there would be such a market for an electric convertible.

    As an Alfa Romeo historian and lifelong lover of these cars, I don't know what to think about this one. I'm usually very positive about EV conversions in general and yours in particular, as they're so well designed and executed. Converting such a late-model Spider makes perhaps more sense than earlier ones, as those late 2.0 twin-cams were more about the torque than horsepower, and the car itself had become more of a cruiser than a raw sports car. Would I ditch the Alfa engine and slick gearbox for EV power, if I owned one of these? Mmmh... No, I don't think so. But I can see the appeal for someone else. Well shot and very pleasant video, thank you for sharing it with us!

      Matteo I’m with you . I’m just not ready to let go of the smell of petrol and the induction noise just yet , not to mention the physical interactions of driving input . Having said that though the work on this Spider is certainly excellent and I’m sure one day I’ll take the plunge with an EV of some sort

No waiting for it to charge up ...if you can find a charge station and no batteries to replace costing upwards of another £10k minumum.

    Excellent quality job as usual, and one thing I am appreciating more and more with each of your conversions of a classic is the simplicity of operation. The wall of screens and touch-stuff on a Tesla or the new BMW i4 is sometimes intimidating when not directly hampering of a relaxed use of the car. I love that you don't shove that into these cars but respect their original nature and blend so well the necessary new functions into the old gauges and knobs. 👍

    • @peterjol
      @peterjol 2 года назад

      that is a reason I think I would far prefer a conversion. ...they like to stick too many screens and menus and options to decide and worry about on new electric cars. I just want something simple to jump in and drive.

    • @BombSponge
      @BombSponge 2 года назад +2

      Only downside seems to be the cost of conversion against cost of fuel/maintenence. If it costs around £50k (low estimate) to convert a car like this to electric that's around ~8,000 gallons of fuel at todays prices. At 20mpg you'd cover 160,000 miles. If you spent half the $50k on fuel (£25k - 80,000 miles worth of fuel) you wouldn't spend the other £25k on maintenence over say 10 years, besides Tesla batteries seem to need replacing after around 8-10 years/150k miles. I own 4 classic cars, 2 Minis a Triumph GT6 and a TVR and been considering a conversion for a while and for now it seems to be significantly more expensive than maintaining an engine that doesnt take hours to charge and gearbox that can be rebuilt or swapped out. In most cases it would be far cheaper to swap out a classic engine for a more powerful, cleaner, fuel efficient engine. All that aside these projects are great engineering exercises and great to watch.

When energy density is a bit higher, the cost and weight a bit lower, and the infrastructure a bit more accessible, something like this would be the PERFECT daily driver! An older fella myself, and a current owner of a couple of "classics", the romantic memories never meet the reality of ownership. I've had a Spider, which I dearly loved, but was also a smelly pain in the rear. I'd take an e version any day. What else would benefit from a conversion: TR6, MGB, any 124, Volvo 240-9XX, Saab 9-3/9-5, any compact pickup truck, any van, large-Marge barges like 60s-70s Cadillacs, Lincolns, Buicks, etc., etc. Keep 'em coming! 👏

    Looks fantastic, brilliant job.. I used to have a Citroen 2CV and looked it, best fun car i have ever had. That in electric would be great as the car was light weight to begin with, taking the engine out and doing the same as you have done with the Spider would be amazing.
    Love the videos very informative.

    Hi Richard, I really like what you guys did to the Alfa Romeo! I'm a retired mechanical engineer in California. I own a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance. The one thing, well actually two things, I love about the car are the silence and power. I hear birds chirping when I am blasting through the country! Anyway, do you guys know about Kei trucks? They have been made in Japan for years and also they drive on the same side as you guys. Perhaps doing a conversion on one of them would be a kick! Many thanks for your great channel! Cheers!

    Congratulation's for you efforts and of course outcome. You have eliminated the beautiful fined oil pan that could be damaged all to easily.
    How much time and cost was involved? How difficult was it to acquire the Tesla batteries." Thank you.

    The tail lights make this the perfect candidate out of all the generations of this car for electrification. I think it would be cool to do some neon style LED like in the latest Tonale

    I'd love to see you do an aluminium bodied and space framed Audi A2.
    It's already a lightweight vehicle, it's got a sandwich floor and a massive boot so getting even better weight distribution should be possible.
    I know there are plenty of enthusiastic members of the A2OC who would love to see a kit to allow these great, practical and fun vehicles to keep on wheeling into the 2030s.

    Moggie, do you ever keep the transmission, in any of the conversions? We have two conversion both with the original transaxles. We are starting our third. To me the transmission is what gives much of the "feel" of the car, the power plant is just now an indestructible electric motor. On the days I don't want to shift just leave it in second or third. Sure it adds a bit of complication you only use the clutch to shift the gears it is never going to wear out. But it sure does increase the fun level.
