Shabani, a silverback gorilla, and her son Kiyomasa (11 years old) were showing off their strength each other.
They are not fighting, just showing off.
Here, we see gorilla-specific behavior.
When they are showing off, they always turn their heads away and avoid eye contact each other.
They do not make eye contact with the other to avoid making the situation worse.
In addition, gorillas' eyes have a large area of black to prevent the other from noticing their line of sight.
Gorillas show off their strength, but they are not looking for a fight.
However, Kiyomasa's mother, Nene, is very sensitive about Shabani's showing off.

Nene was born wild in Cameroon.
The other three were born in the Higashiyama Zoo in Japan.

I've always thought Ai's mannerisms and gestures were more humanlike than any other gorilla I have watched.

I feel bad for Shabani -- he's the sweetest and gentlest of the SIlverbacks, a great father to Annie and Kiyo, but instead of being rewarded for these things, he has to live with this much older woman who is both his ex-wife AND his mother-in-law, who🐓blocks his attempts at wooing his wife Ai who is rarely in the mood as it is! He spends a lot of time with his kids, and even spent more time with Annie than Ai did when Annie was a baby! (this was when Ai rejected baby Annie and cranky grandma NeNe attacked baby Annie!) One of these zoos needs to send Shabani a new wife who can appreciate a fun-loving husband who loves kids and has a sense of humor!
Being forced to live with an old woman? They're animals, she's a mature female. And FYI THEYRE ALL PRISONERS!! She's not having a blast either 😂
What type of zoo is that damn loud? Most zoos have signs up to respect the animals. No yelling, tapping on glass etc. These poor animals have to listen to these people yelling all day. No wonder the gorilla was shaking her poor head. Damn people, get some manners. SHUT UP...

Annie was trying to get Kiyomasa to play but he was like hummmmm maybe later😂😂😂 I just can’t get over how big he is getting I know Shabani is huge,, but honestly in my opinion I think he might get even bigger then his Dad and his uncle Haoko to he just might become the biggest Silverback when all is said and done 😊😊😊😊 IDK 🤷♀️ just thinking out loud😅😅
I gotta give it to Nene she protects her son no matter what
As soon as tension starts between the males she jumps right into action and positions herself between them
She is small, elderly and has a hard time running but all that shit goes away when she sees her son about to get hurt
Like how she supports her son to be the alpha and even mates with him and causes most of the tension in the first place. Yeah great....

3:47 Kiyo gets into the stiff-legged fighting stance and then it looks like Ai tries to get in-between him and Shabani before things escalate. Are some of the females in estrus? That's generally what causes Kiyo and Shabani to start getting agitated with each other.
Edit: Yeah, it looks later on like Kiyo is trying to proposition Ai, causing Shabani to try to drive him off and make power displays, so Nene keeps getting involved to back her son up.
Shabani is seriously excited at Kiyomasa and he like to challenge his own son and they tie their lips and that was a silverback way.
What are they going to do with his son when the females go into heat 🤔 🤔

Seems like gentaro is bigger and bulky than kiyomasa
Gentaro's parents are both huge.
Kiyo is one year younger then Gentaro and their weight is pretty much the same 155-160 kg

@@sandraphillips1718actually, Momotaro family runs a bit smaller....Genki is small compared to other females. Seems Gentaro will soon outweigh his father.
@@shieldshockerwotbody proportions are different for maturing adults, as they are with us. Some are heavy, some are leaner, like Annie is very lean. They are all different.

@@stevemorris6790 That could’ve been me. I have nothing personal against the guy. Just wondering why he is more special than the Silverbacks at the San Diego Zoo or Columbus Zoo?
@@greggrodes4117 He's not, it just depends on if anyone local to the zoos you mentioned have enough interest/dedication in gorillas to film them daily (or at minimum a few times per week). Sometimes the zoos themselves will upload clips.
An American I know of is the Larry's Animal Safari channel in Cincinnati.
Shabani holds much love in Japanese hearts as he was a kind of iconic superstar a few years back, even to non-gorilla people.
BTW, there are a bunch of vids of the Dallas troop. I recommend just doing a vanilla search like "zoo gorillas usa" as a start.
