Ouya's Terrible Controller is Back... and Better Than Ever?!

  • The Ouya (and its controller) were both a disaster. These days, the console is little more than a paperweight (or an over-priced emulation machine, if you want to go the extra mile). But since its controller is Bluetooth, you can still use it on PC, phones, and tablets to this day.
But more than that, you can buy yourself a genuine rip-off of an Ouya controller for PC and Nintendo Switch. There are dozens of controllers on Amazon and eBay that take the shell of the Ouya controller and enable its use on Switch. Are these controllers any good, is it even legal, and are they any good? Let's find out.

With this video, I’m debuting a minor reboot of the channel. Still focused on indie games, I’ll also cover more broad (and niche) gaming topics, like this. I’ll be uploading more, and obviously, start appearing on camera when I think it appropriate.
Sorry about the audio quality, by the way. It was my first time doing something like this and I was testing stuff out. Don’t worry, I just upgraded all my audio equipment, so the next video will sound much better! I’m also working on the lighting too. This on-camera stuff is hard!

I just finished watching your OUYA video from years ago and as I go back to your channel there's a new OUYA video uploaded just a few minutes ago? My weirdest RUclips coincidence yet.

My theory is that the factory in like China or Taiwan that ouya used had the molds left over and just decided to re purpose them to make this.

Yup my thoughts as well. The Ouya is the very eptiome of cheap Chinese plastic. And if there's one thing the Chinese manufacturing sector loves is repurposing and reselling said cheap plastic.

THe ouya controllers I used was one of the best controllers I used. But I have monster hands, and no controller but the duke and the ouya controller fits in them and not feel like my hand is dying just holding the damn things. The first set of controllers I got were like how you described, but I bought 2 after and they almost have none of the controllers, it seems like the launch controllers had a whole list of problems but they tried to rectify them and fix them a few months later and even fixed them again with the ouya black console launch, which FLOPPED so hard even though apparently that one fixed all the problems the ouya had including supposively the networking chip which lead to the fight over bluetooth and wifi which caused so much of the "controller" problems. Atleast this is what ouya told everyone, also the black version that came out over a year later also had double the storage. The wireless controllers had issues because the ouya itself had issues with connecting to more than 1 thing at a time. If you used all wired controllers, and wired connection than the system worked as intended and golden, if you connect 1 controller and wifi welp your fucked, 2 controllers and wired connection, still fucked.

If I had to guess, I'd say that these Switch controllers all come out of the same factory, which is very probably the very same factory that was contracted to build the Ouya controllers in the first place - and rather than spend time & resources designing a new controller from the ground up, and all the expensive tooling that requires, they just dug out the Ouya controller tool. Then it was just a case of changing the guts to get rid of the AA battery sockets, the touch-pad etc, and before you know it, you've got a decent enough budget controller you can sell.
It's not the first time this has happened. Remember OnLive? They were the first micro-console, releasing in the same generation as the PS3/360/Wii, but their system was based around streaming big-budget games to your home via broadband internet, much like Google Stadia today. They crashed just as hard as Stadia too, but were bought up by Sony and today live on as the technology behind PlayStation Now. Incidentally, On-Live was also available a service on the Ouya - but I digress.
OnLive has a bespoke controller for their micro-console.
It was really nice, very comfortable to use, and utterly useless once OnLive shuttered. But whatever factory built it, recycled the design for Google's Nexus Player - an Android-based mini-console that came out around the same time as all the others. The Nexus Player's controller is again really nice to use and feels lovely in the hand. It uses Bluetooth, so it can at least still sync to phones etc today, which just as well, as Google abandoned the Nexus Player almost immediately.
The controller design for reused again, though. This time, the thumbsticks have moved from a PlayStation configuration to an Xbox/GameCube configuration, as it appears to be used as the official modern controller for the Atari VCS system.

Thank you! This was a good first run of the on-camera stuff since it's a tangible product to review. It's stuff like this and other physical stuff (like crowdfunded-consoles, the PlayDate, etc) that I'm most looking forward to filming.

I kickstarted the ouya and the analogue sticks were *crunchy*. Ouya's response? "don't worry, the one's we put on the shelves will be better quality. Buy one of those when they release". Disgusting.

I own a gen1 ouya like switch pro controller and a gen2. and they both connect via bluetooth. I use it to play games on my android tablet and phone. I even used it via bluetooth on the ouya it self.
you have to press the (Y) button and then turn it on with the home button while holding the (Y) button down. then Bluetooth mode enables.

Metal moldes for plastic items cost as much as sport luxery cars. Even the atari jaguars moldes were sold to dental equipment manufactores, just to recover loses. If you have metal moldes for plastic manifature and you aren't using it, you're burning money.

What annoyed me about the Ouya controller is not having an On/Off button. Sometimes you'd turn off the console, and the controller would stay on until the batteries died. I thought you could configure the josytick deadzone in Windows.
