Alaskan natives will tell you he was reckless at best and stupid at worst. This movie and the book were super romanticized, but it’s ultimately a cautionary tale. Chris was breaking into local’s homes for food and was so woefully unprepared. He died a slow, painful, and lonely death. And now there are people dying because they were inspired by this story.

I just watched a documentary about Chris McCandless and discovered that he didn’t cut up and toss out all his identification and money. For whatever reason, the authorities didn’t retrieve his back pack from the bus, but a local man did. It appeared to be empty, but the guy found a hidden compartment which contained Chris’s wallet. Within the wallet, there were probably 7 or 8 pieces of identification, including his DL, SS card and a library card. Also, there was $300 in it. I have heard some folks theorize that Chris set out on a death wish and for years I sort of wondered about it myself because I earnestly believed he had erased himself by getting rid of all identifying documents. To hear that he actually didn’t do that more solidified my belief that he fully intended on going back home, or at least going back to civilization. Chris, aka Alex Supertramp, your story absolutely breaks my mother heart and I feel as if your life and death was both a love letter to and an indictment of Generation X. I do not think you held beliefs and convictions very different from the rest of us Gen Xers, but you had the balls to actually act upon those impulses and convictions. I wish you would have survived your self-imposed rite of passage because I think you likely would have had a lot to say and people would have enjoyed hearing it. RIP Mr. McCandless, I hope to one day meet you on the other side.

Going alone feels more intimidating than going with a group, but i havent found any like minded people near me willing to leave everything behind and explore the world. The second thing is that I'm surrounded by a lot of depressed individuals who prefer the safety and comfort of boring 9-5's and push me toward settling for the same things (family, friends, co workers etc). Despite being aware of this, I find myself being influenced by their attitudes and resigning myself to the monotonous life I currently have. I'm still young, and I still plan to do this, I just feel like I've missed out already so much. Once I get over those, I think I'll be all set to go. It's organized, but right now I'm setting up a study abroad experience in Japan in rural prefectures for next January. That'll definitely get me out of my comfort zone in the meantime.

But the truth is that, we can travel to the end of the world, to the most densely populated place on this planet or start a completely new life in the most isolated place on earth.... one thing for certain is that, there isn't going to be a magical book, containing the secrets to one's life. Or what's in store for the remainder of that person's life.
There is no destination or magical place that will reveal who we are as a person.

He did something that brought me to something I never could understand of what either i have to do or what i need to do in my life.
