"Complete silence is very addictive," says Rebecca Knill, a writer who has cochlear implants that enable her to hear. In this funny, insightful talk, she explores the evolution of assistive listening technology, the outdated way people still respond to deafness and how we can shift our cultural understanding of ability to build a more inclusive world. "Technology has come so far," Knill says. "Our mindset just needs to catch up."

Yt videos really need to have sign language subtitles available so that deaf people can watch them
This made me chuckle not gonna lie
Or make it easier to turn on the Close Caption. A lot of people don't know what those 3 little dots in the corner do. Also the Close Caption voice-to-text is still not perfect.
they do :) Closed captions
I wish (as a songwriter) I could afford to have a sign language interpreter on my music videos. Instead I try to lyric videos with a legible font (for those with low vision or dyslexia) and will still edit YT’s automated captions to ensure words appear where they are meant to especially when the video may not be of the singer but of visual art.
I’m hearing impaired and i remember how every new pair of hearing aids broadened my perspective on sound, i started listening to music cause it actually sounded good, i started hearing little things like birds chirping and newspapers rustling. I’m so glad i get them provided for free!!
What an incredibly charming presenter. This was so eye opening and kept me enraptured.
I would agree. I reached out to Rebecca on Twitter and she was very nice ☺️
She is a excellent speaker
"technology has come so far, our mindset just needs to catch up..." Amazing ted talk, truly an eye opener.
I’d agree, technology is making significant headway. Now we need people to to do the same and to do that requires listening and learning. From the ground up and top dow, the middle point would become a level playing field.
I came here because I wanted to understand more about technology for the deaf, I recently started a job with a deaf staff member in my team. She blew me away with how capable she was, and I just had to learn more. Thank you for this TED talk! You’ve changed my perspective a whole lot. P.S. this is literally my first comment ever ever!!
A beautiful description of her journey through time and eye opening in a unique perspective I would never have known about.
Can you hear me?
Listen, not with your ears
But with your eyes
To you they speak
My silent hands
Hear me tell my tale
Hear me sing my song
Learn my language
My beautiful language
Hear my hands
Hear my music and story
Learn my language
Speak to me with your hands
Share my beautiful language
Hear my silent hands
We have a tale to tell
A song to sing
Open your eyes
And hear me speak
Very nice!
That was lovely. Thank you for sharing. I just came so hard to your comment. Keep it up
"Smart designers include multiple ways to access technology." I could not agree with that statement more. It reminds me of how Microsoft used to put a huge amount of effort into making their OS usable with only a keyboard, no mouse. Sure, you could use a mouse like everyone does, but they recognized the value in being able to interact with the OS in multiple ways. Microsoft might still be doing this, but I don't use Windows anymore.
It's not as easy as before, but it's there if you remember the old ways
They have improved in leaps and bounds with their approach to inclusion. Designing with everyone in mind is nit only good design but essential as our agent population is ever increasing. However, design should be about the ‘hear and now’ and who needs it. I enjoyed your comment 👏🏻
Great talk and amazing to hear her perspective, love what she says at 03:59! 😁
I remember that moment! Her timing was impeccable 😊
What a lovely sense of humour she has. Excellent talk and I didn't see her once check out an autocue?
She felt very natural and I too didn’t see any sense of using an auto-cue.
What a great and charming person!
she awesome speaker thank you very much for bringing the deaf issues on the mainstream.
Being health is only my hope in my life for all dear human beings! I love you all.🌹🌸
Thank you for simplifying deafness and cochlea implants which is otherwise a tech area.
Pure dymystication
Such an eye opening story😯😊
Interesting, informative and well presented. How unfortunate it is that even in the 21st century those of with various human imperfections have to explain ourselves. The good news, today more people are willing to pay attention, learn and hopefully be more supportive. Love your sense of humor, Rebecca Knill. Indeed, humor is the best medicine and one thing no one can take away from us. Warmest wishes. Be a blessing.
I’m hopeful more and more people are learning ( like me) and are nit only weaving it into their life but sharing any found knowledge with those around them. The power of many.
Thank you so much for sharing your personal story. I agree with you that technology help us a lot.
What a magnificent speaker.
I'm hoh for all of my adult life tills my hearing aids went broken but I'm glad to have seen how technology has improved in many aspects...but I think there is more work need to be made in order to truly CONNECT to every individual all around on Earth. Keep on assimilating!
A joy to watch, learn from and reaffirm things I’m trying to do to connect to everyone as an artist and global citizen. What an enjoyable and essential talk 👏🏻
"Technology has come so far, our mindset needs to catch up" amazing talk and fantastic POV. We need more of this!
Wonderful TED!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💖
Very well done and thank you ! Borg here as well ... about to go Bilateral
this was a great subject to talk about and bring attention too
It has been a really great talk, I loved it. Thank you so much!
I enjoyed listening to you and your sense of humor is a hoot Ü I was taught to embrace and enjoy the different from myself. You go girl!
Wonderful talk Rebecca! I had no idea technology could be such a blessing
I hope she goes back and watches Star Trek with the CC on.
Absolutely wonderful!
Even though I can hear and understand the language of a video or movie I prefer subtitles or close caption . When I listen to music I have to know the lyrics otherwise I don't understand it , gets to mixed up in my brain.
Great talk! Looking forward to reading your book "Radiohead Gal"
Beautiful.
Wonderful.
Technology changed quite a lot of things if I do say so myself.
I’m trying to wrap my mind around COVID19. Can’t handle this Borg stuff at the same time 😂😂
Me too! 😆
Now lockdown for 21 days straight..

I relate to this woman but unlike her I don’t have a physical disability. I was an orphan and a lot of those things like the pity and the belief that you can’t or that you must be suffering because of your living situation. The annoyance of their ignorance. This woman knows more than one world and so do I. Think about that whenever you meet people especially those who aren’t “privileged”as you.
What do u mean "those people"
When were these conferences filmed ?
for blinds, audio is practically everything
Did you know blind people can't actually see. I've been reading a lot on Wikipedia
Muito top
Um, no, the magnet isn't inside the skull. It sits on the skull, outside of it. Otherwise, cool presentation!
TED = knowledge
knowledge = FTW
Hotel = Trivago
Wasn't thinking how blessed to hear I was until I watched this. Also didn't know that some deaf people didn't necessarily want to get better. I remember a bible passage where the disciples asked Jesus "Who sinned to make this person like this" because that was a normal belief at the time, but he responded that it was for the glory of God. Still don't understand it fully, but I have seen some people healed through prayer in Jesus' name.
Hearing has nothing to do with "blessings"
Without technology where would be your blessings?
get better??
@@wendisouth733 Like their condition change. No hearing to full hearing.
@@circassianlondoner I'd have lots of blessings or things I'm thankful to God for if I didn't have technology. Wouldn't you?
Yes!
Sub titles so that I could understand it?
Are you looking forward to the new marvel processor
Subtle sense of humor... Interesting way of spinning content into being funny... Good ppt
"But I've never once wished to be hearing.
I just wanted to be part of a community like me. I wanted everyone else to be deaf." -- how very feminist of you 10/10
what?
press "С"
No, thank you!
First?
i dont like money
Why is there an audience?
Apple Slices Unite this was most likely filmed a few months earlier before COVID-19 was a thing.
she looks and moves like a robot though.
That's because she's a borg.
great talk!
