After being a Duran Duran fan since their debut back in the early 80's, I FINALLY got to see them in Detroit in 2023!! Incredible!! Well worth the road trip from Nova Scotia!
Was anyone out there actually there? Please please tell me now!! Duranie for life!! I'm 46 but saw this and made mum and dad record for me on VHS when I was 8!! Had posters, tee shirts, badges! This band was so ahead of their time! Love this live version, it has balls!
When this concert aired on Cinemax, I had a Duran theme sleep over where all my best girl firends spent the night after watching the concert. Gave away buttons (you know the kind that were so popular back in the 80's that we wore on our jean jackets). It was so much fun. To this day, they still make me giggle like a teeny-bopper, lol.
WalterSobchak1000, you hit the nail right on the head. Even though there have been so many great bass players over the years including Mark King of Level 42 and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, John Taylor is indeed the king of bass players. His bass playing throughout the 1984 American tour and Duran Duran's live performance of "Hold Back The Rain" are just 2 classic examples.
john taylor is definitely the most underrated bass player. people overlook his talent just because he is a pretty boy so they think he cant play or else they more interested on his look than his talent.
Wow, look at the crowd. They´re like "wow, i never seen something that cool in my whole life". And Simon was in a good shape while dancing, i didn´t know that. And the whole band always have a great stage presence. I´m really impressed.
Hearing and seeing this version as an adolescent was like finding religion. Energy, passion and innovation. Each member brings something unique to the table. Nick in my opinion is the the innovator. Each plays his instrument well but Nick adds the right effects at right time to distinguish the song. He is sort of the Beatles’ George Martin in that he adds a “finished’ sound to each song,
A life long metal fan but in the 80’s first band I got into was Duran Duran. Absolutely superb band, this gig is awesome, you can see where U2 got all there ideas from with Zoo TV and all that.
The future Oracle Arena. I was sixteen and the tickets were $18, but my parents would not let me go to see them at the Oakland Arena. I had to hear about at high school from people who went.
just put this vhs tape playing today, and boy, what such beautiful memories it brought to me. Saw Duran live here in Lisbon, 1 month ago and they ARE still in shape
I saw them this past April (for the very 1st time) and will see them in October! Dare I say they are even sexier now than they were back in the 80's!! They sounded amazing and put on the best concert I have ever seen!!! God I can't wait for Oct 28th
Wonderful time capsule at the peak of Duran Duran - I was at this concert when the tour came through Toronto, awesome show. I can guarantee some of this video footage here is from that Toronto show, because two of my high school friends are shown dancing in the stands. Duran also reused some of it for their official "live" video of The Reflex.
You replied to my message about girls on film, make sure you reply on the public comments not private people. If it was a mistake you should have said so.
I just love this video, have watched it sooooo many times. I have a bootleg of this on DVD because my Dad taped over the original in 1984. I cried for days.. ;-) Sooo much energy and what great guitars and bass. Wow
f.cking right time. tempo, sound, visual is on - still. 40 yrs. still.. i loved duran and dm. different feeling. that is all. still is on. both of them could play music
@FabHckyBbe AWESOME!! I have seen this a thousand times since the 80's and always envied every person at that concert and always wondered if the people who got on camera are still die hard Duranies to this day!! LUCKY YOU!!
A lot of lads got dragged to DD concerts by thier girlfriends and they often came home pleasantly surprised, because they weren't just a bunch of pretty boys. They could actually play thier instruments and very well.
wow, this was in the days when boys werent afraid of singin along with every1 else in a concert lol...clauzinhaa i feel ur pain, i was born in '91 so i missed all of the 80s!
Just listened to Duran play live on RUclips directed by David Lynch (3/24/11).. and missed Andy and REAL guitar playing so much, I had to run here and listen to this song!! Andy-- please return.. pleassseeee~~
I remember watching this on Cinemax (it's the reason I got Cinemax in the first place!) They need to release this on DVD....my VHS has about had it, I've played it so much since '84!
At the 84 concert the song went on for twenty minutes, between all the introductions to the band members and everyone getting a solo. So nice edit of about 10 minutes.
@FabHckyBbe Very cool!! .I have only seen them 3 times over the years!! But they were the BEST concerts I have EVER been to. My first one was in Philly in 1993, and I will NEVER forget anything about that magical night!! The last one I been to was 2005, when they all reunited again!! AMAZING! Simon was next to me in my aisle and still looked so young and AMAZING after all those years!!
@luciob1 You lucky duck, I am envious, lol. I had just discovered DD during the time they were touring, and missed them when they came to my city. It wasn't until 1999, missing a few of the original band members, that I got to see them in concert, but it was a right of passage at that point, for me. lol Side note: The woman SImon LeBon dated for a couple years, off and on, during the epic 1984-85 tour, was Candian model Claire Stansfield. Simon met his wife, model Yasmin Parvaneh, later in 1985

I loves me some 80's Duran Duran!!! So talented. Still are. 💞💕💞💕
Completely excellent take on this song, so revved up! Wonder where Nick was…
As a bass player myself, I have to give John Taylor props. Incredible bass player.
Zoe Lewis indeed, dear Zoe. Indeed.
In fact he was kinda my motivation to start with the bass.
@@Franck_Major_X I am not a bass player; just playing guitar for fun
Indeed John is one of the greatest; Always fun to hear him and Duran Duran rocks
Also, one of the greatest bass lines ever!
That bass line is funky!! Love it!!
I was born in 1990. I cannot believe I missed all this. WHERE'S THAT TIME MACHINE DAMN IT!!

john taylor, king of bass players
That bold statement is a matter of opinion... check out Mark King from Level 42.

He is the most UNDERATED bassist in the history of music.
I concur that motion
John Taylor just killing.....Andy Taylor shredding too....
I LOVE this song. John Taylor has the best bass line here...it's PERFECT!!!!!!!
Wow, look at the crowd. They´re like "wow, i never seen something that cool in my whole life". And Simon was in a good shape while dancing, i didn´t know that. And the whole band always have a great stage presence. I´m really impressed.
I would've given anything to have been at this concert.
I was there! That's me on the big screen (for 2 seconds). I'm the one in the hat jumping up and down. 2:49
Wow, and you remember it ?
Arcadia - my all-time fave album. ARENA is 20th.

I wish I could play the bass like that,
What an inspiration Duran Duran is!
I was 15 when I watched this on MTV. That roller derby scene was like porn to me!
So good it’s ridiculous. The music was genius. Lyrics were pure artwork. Sexiest men alive. This whole experience was a gift from the Gods.
What a great live band!
The energy at this concert was just un- f!@#$%ng believable! I wish I was there for that.
A lot of people don't realise that this band were huge back then, world wide
