In this tutorial, I'll show you how to hook up the appear and disappear animations to trigger shapes, allowing you to display and hide information in the presentation mode of PowerPoint.
This is a great PowerPoint trick when working with vector maps, graphics or when you want to have pop-up text appear that exceeds 256 characters, as it allows you to professionally bring objects on and off screen for your audience.
These are just some of the time saving PowerPoint tricks we cover at Nuts and Bolts Speed Training for PowerPoint. Make sure to subscribe to our RUclips channel, or visit our website to check out our other free resources:

thank uuuuuu!!! this helped me a lot!
Glad that helped you out, thanks for the comment!
Great video! I never before twigged that "Add Animation..." lets you stack animations like that, rather than replacing the original. Thanks!
Yes! That is often misunderstood. As a general rule, using the the Add Animation button ensures you don't wipe out whatever animations you've already applied to your objects. It's also the first step to creating some amazing effects you see in PowerPoint. Check out PowerPoint Spice on RUclips for some amazing effects. ruclips.net/user/powerpointspice
@@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining Can we hide the other when we click the other one ?
Many thanks I have been looking for this for a while
Great straight-forward video on how to do this task!

OMG THANKS! I did not know how to let the animations vanish, this was very helpful 🙂
Glad I could help!

YES I love learning new tricks
Very helpful, thanks mate
Thanks a million!!! This video helped me a lot! ❤❤❤😊👌👌👌
Is there a site where we could get vector maps for other countries? Ie South Africa?
Yes. You can start with the following website (freevectormaps.com/). If those are not what you are looking for, there are probably other vector and/or graphics sites where you can buy them. I hope that helps!
Amazing bro than you!
You're welcome!
Hello. Do we need the duplicate slide? Is that what's making the animation possible?
Duplicating the slide just makes it easier to work with. Once you have built up, the appear and disappear animations will all run from that one slide (no additional slides necessary).
You're the real mvp man
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video... it's amazing what you can accomplish in PowerPoint once you put your mind to it.
@@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining true. My teacher was pretty impressed with my presentation. I got a 1,3 (an A in the American system) for it. Thanks again, man.
Thank you so much! This helped me a lot!
THANKS!
Glad that helped you out!
I also wrote all of these steps up in the following blog post if you ever want to review them: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
How may I do the same effect if both images are on top of each other? Thank you.
can an object serve as it's own trigger to appear and disappear? like clicking on western makes it go blue and subsequently white?
Not with a lot of control. You can hide the object after you run the animation or rewind it... but it's then tough to get the timing right with how you want to present it. I find it easiest to just add the additional animations you want. Hope that's helpful.
Further question : how to make the "red" button also make blue region disappears while making red region appear, and vice versa?
Thank you
You will need to string up those animated effects in the Animation Pane, and stack them in the order you want them. It might take some playing around to figure out the right order, but that is where you want to start.
thank you for your demonstration its the best!
however is it possible to make this animation On-mouse over as well?
+Liat Soroker No, I don't believe you can do that with the mouse over effect. You can use the mouse-over effect to jump to a different slide, but to my knowledge you can't fire animations using triggers with just a mouse-over.
Glad you enjoyed the tips and thanks for the comment! Good luck with your presentations.
+PowerPoint for Business Professionals How can i make in PP a random button game?

If you ever need a quick refresher on the steps, I wrote them all out in the following article: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
Am.not able to do it with a map which I have drawn by myself in paintbrush..shift cntr g is not working..am not able to fill it up or hover
To ungroup a set of objects it needs to be in a vector file format. I'm not sure if drawing it yourself in Paintbrush will automatailly create the vector format.
Thank you!!!!

Hey Taylor
This one was helpful but I want to know that how to make an object appear while other disappear at same time please help dear...
Can this be done on google slides?
Great question, and I believe the answer is no. Google Slides does not allow you to trigger animations like this.
Thank you!! It really Helpful!
Glad you found that tutorial helpful. There is a TON of cool stuff you can do using these combination effects. You can also check out the blog post if you ever need to review the steps. nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
Can I make all the objects appear in one go after making them appear & disappear one by one?
I would love some help here. I have Powerpoint from 2011. Is that the problem? My goal is for a specific picture to disappear when it's clicked on. Never to reappear. My issue is that all I'm able to do is to eliminate pictures in a specific chronological order, not in the random order in which they're clicked.
You should be able to choose which pictures disappear by which objects you tie the click to. Or are you are trying to click one object and have a random order of pictures disappear?
Hey can we make it appear if we put our mouse to appear next and make it disappear if we move the mouse from the appear text?
thx a lot this rly helpd
Glad that helped you out. Thanks for checking out our channel
Thanks! This is just what I needed, but I think I have a newer version of PowerPoint. I can’t find the trigger effects. It only gives me the “on click”option.
What trigger effect are you looking for? In the video, I only use the "on click" trigger effect to hook up those animations. Just make sure that you apply the animation, and then use the "on click" to set when the animation fires. If you go the animations pane, and right-click the animations there, you get Effect Options and Timing that you can play around with...is that what you are looking for?
I think I figured out why I can't see them. I'm on a mac, and I don't think that option is available.
Ah...that's a bummer (Crazy that there are still features that aren't on both PC and MAC). Thanks for letting me know about that.
Awesome!! Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed the trick! One update to this trick is you don't have to add the animation twice (appear and disappear). You can flip the animation in the animation pane to turn it off on the second click. Also make sure to check out our latest free mini-series, you can see the trailer on RUclips here. ruclips.net/video/NUPRjmHWw54/видео.html
Brilliant!
Thanks Bruna!
It'll be useful.
Yes... there are a lot of different uses for this trick. If you ever want a recap of the steps, check out the blog post I made below: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
Is it possible to do the same thing without trigger objects?
Great question, it's not possible without trigger objects as far as I know. Otherwise there is now way to trigger the animation.
@@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining Triggering on click is possible, by grouping the objects. I tried it.
@@Mita_2023 Isn't that the same as adding a trigger? I must have misunderstood what you meant in your original comment. Glad it works for you.
Thanks 😘
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. A slight variation on that trick is how you can also add the pop-up text effect. If you are interested, you can see that here: ruclips.net/video/DhmY-4ogjXs/видео.html
Can you do this on google slides?
I have an issue, when I do the disappear animation, I lose the boarders of my states grouped, can you explain how to fix that? I tried changing the format painter but that didn't work.
That seems weird. So you have colored states stacked on top of white ones, but when the color shapes disappear the outlines of the white shape disappears...can you send me the deck at taylor (at) nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com? I will take a look and see what the issue is.
Thanks!! fun and helpful
suuuuuper helpful. thanks
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment!
Thanks works very well
+MarsNot2Far Awesome, glad to hear it worked! Thanks for leaving a comment, good luck with your presentations.
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the tip, thanks for the kind comment. Cheers!
Hi Thanks for the informative video. I am not receiving emails of these ppt slides, i have submitted request multiple times. Please resolve issue
How can we do the same thing without the rectangular buttons?
You can insert any object you want (round rectangles, triangles, circles, etc.) The process is the same as any object in PowerPoint can be used as a trigger like that.
I want to repeat the repeat the animation for the same object with a different effect. But i'm unable to achive that. can you please let me know how do i do that
Just clarifying what you mean. So you want to click the button once, to have the shapes fill-in, and then click a different button to have the same shapes do something else? The way you'll want to set that up is layering your effects correctly. When you fade in the colors (or your effect) they will fade in based on the layering you set them up with. So just make sure that the second (or third) effect is brought all the way to the front layer. Does that make sense? If you send me what you are working on and let me know which effect you want layer up, I'll show you what I mean. email me at taylor (at) nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com
Thank you. I will drop you an email
Can you make a vid on how I’d do it on google slides
I'm not sure if you can do that in Google Slides... but when I get around to covering it, I will test it out. Thx for the recommendation.
hi can we make a button appear after both triggers are clicked??
Great question. I don't think so, the normal triggers don't work like that. That said, you might be able to if you unlock the developer tab in your Ribbon. There might be a tool in there you can use, but you would need to know some code to make it work. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
Nuts & Bolts Speed Training thanks so much for the fast reply i appreciate it alot
If we put an action button can the user move to the next slide by the arrows or mouse scroll or he has to press the action button and thru it only?
If you are creating a button to navigate to the next slide, you can either use a Hyperlink on a shape (that the user would need to click) or add an Action (from the insert tab). If you add an action to a shape, you can set it so that if the user hovers over the shape in slide show mode, the user will advance to the next slide (or whatever slide you choose). Hope that helps!
THANK YOU SOOOO VERY MUCH!!!!!
Glad you found the tutorial helpful, thanks for the comment!
Is there a way to do this with Powerpoint 2007?
If you clicked along and it doesn't work, my guess is it doesn't work in PowerPoint 2007. I don't have that version any more that I can test it out on either. You can scroll through the blog post version of this animation trick if it's easier for you here: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
how would I do that with drag & drop text [correct & incorrect], and when the correct answer is select the background color changes from red to green. Thanks
Great question! That starts to get into more and more complicated PPT animations and what-not. If you have PowerPoint 2016, I recommend checking out the free OfficeMix option which makes creating quizzes easy. mix.office.com/watch/xnj2969nukmb?lcid=1033
On the flip side...I think what you would need to do is trigger a Hyperlink to go to a different slide with the correct background formatting to show the correct or incorrect. I would have to think about that one for awhile. My gut tells me it will be tough (and complicated) so I would try to find an add-in that creates the quiz for you. Office Mix is where I would start if you have PPT2016. Hope that helps!
I could upload my ppp to let you have a look at.
Yes. If you upload and share the link I will take a look. Otherwise, send it to me at taylor (at) nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com.
sorry, I have not had time to even begin writing the code.
Thanks ^^ You are a life saver.
Glad that worked out for you and thanks for the great comment! Good luck with your presentations.
ok, but I want to be able to click it several times and not go to the next slide, any ideas?
As long as you set it up with an appear and disappear animation, you can click it as many times as you like without it advancing to the next slide. If you hit Enter on the other hand, you will advance to the next slide. Hope that helps.

where do you get vectors that are ungroupable?
+Paula Acebu You can get them at sites like getmygraphics.com/. Often times when you get a vector graphic, it will be in an adobe format...you can follow the instructions on our resource page for how to turn those into a native PPT vector that you can ungroup and see other sites we recommend checking out. nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-resources/
Song?
I forget what it's called, it was one of the Camtasia default songs.
From where i can get a free vector image of us map ?
Go to the following blog posts and look for the button that says download the slides. That's a free US vector graphic of the United States that you can use anywhere you like (that's already set up with all of the animations as outlined in the video). nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/triggers-for-appear-disappear-animations-in-powerpoint/
Ok thank u but if i want a lot of free vector images then ...?
They come as part of the download in the slides. You can also just google Free U.S. Vector map if you want to go that way. Just make sure that whatever you download gives you full rights to use it without referencing anything.
Ok thank u
but I can't ungroup
ya
It doesn't work
Martin Khlopin Where did you get stuck? You want to make sure that after adding the animations to your object that with that animated object selected (otherwise it's trigger options wont show up) select the trigger object you want to launch the animation from. If you get me some more details of where you are stuck, I will try to help you out.
