      You nailed it, my man. It's super theoretical and would take at least, probably thousands of generations to come to fruition, but it's possible. This song takes into account all of the bipedal humanoid species which have existed until now and looks at what may become. JMK has insight which only the brightest of us posess. I also hear he makes some wicked wine.

      Your sins have been forgiven 😁Now go listen to the album Aenima that this song is from. The entire album has this same dark smoky grungy quality to it and some recurring elements that you hear in this song spread out across the rest of the album. Worth listening to from start to finish, the whole thing is an epic journey. Then listen to Lateralus, their next album, which is a very different production quality to it... much crisper and clearer, different aesthetic and lyrical content, but just as much of an epic journey. Both masterpiece albums.

    Just an FYI, the title refers to a biological theory of human evolution.
    We have 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes in our DNA. There is a theory that this will increase to 46 and 2 as we evolve. Hence the title :)

  • @Brandon_Beaty
    @Brandon_Beaty 7 месяцев назад +21

    Having been to a number of their concerts, the crowd that shows up is a diverse scattering of humanity. TOOL's music speaks to something deeper within common in most people even without the lyrics. I'm happy to see you enjoyed this song so thoroughly! 🤙

  • @UnethicalLogic
    @UnethicalLogic 7 месяцев назад +31

    This song refers to concepts of Jungian psychology, the Shadow-Self. A song about evolving yourself, adding 2 chromosomes. 46 + 2. Tool is ahead of their time.

    • @keep1t5imple5tupid
      @keep1t5imple5tupid 7 месяцев назад +1

      It depends on where you add the 2. We are 44 and 2.. 44 autonomes plus 2 chromosomes. Adding 2 chromosomes would result in 44 and 4, which is an XXYY situation that has some pretty bad side effects. Look it up, its not pretty. Adding 2 to the autonomes is much different... which is why the song is 46 and 2(evolution), not 44 and 4(devolution).

    • @skildude
      @skildude 7 месяцев назад +2

      The funny thing is we lost 2 Chromosomes when we evolved to the Genus Homo. I'm not sure adding 2 or have the 2 that failed to split to split again would actually be a benefit to mankind

    • @Praephyr
      @Praephyr 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@skildude The 46&2 chromosomes part of the song comes from an esoterico-pseudoscientific theory/prophecy that already revealed itself to be untrue and based on nothing real (made by Drunvalo Melchizedec) but I think they used it for the "evolving" theme of the song to make it more cryptic on purpose.
      The shadow work part of it is indeed based on Jung's works and permeates all the song without being explicit though and in my mind is the real message.
      Overall evolving through shadow work.

    You should do a video on "Green Jellÿ - Three Little Pigs" (also sometimes called Green Jellö before they had to change their name)!
    Yes, it's a metal version of Three Little Pigs, it has a claymation video, and it's even more awesome than it sounds! It was one of the most popular videos on MTV back in the day.
    Many of Green Jellÿ's members are from Tool! Their Three Little Pigs music video features Maynard James Keenan (Tool), Pauly Shore (the comedian/actor) and Les Claypool (Primus) voicing the Three Little Pigs, and Danny Carey (Tool) is on the drums.
    The song is co-written by Mark Levinthal whose work has been on the movies Ted 2, Valley Girl, etc.
    Thanks for making these videos, It's great to have this way of listening to music with you without the risk of you sucking my blood!!

    Another incredible song off this album is "Eulogy". Also, Maynard intentionally puts his lyrics in many parts to let the music stand front in many of their songs. Even in a lot of their live concerts he would kind of go in the shadows while the band stood front.

      @UltraViolent21 7 месяцев назад +1

      There is also 5/8 in this and most of it is just 4:4. Playing around with 4:4 with pauses retardants can make it seem like a a different time signature. The fills at the end of verses are cool for a second but it’s mostly 4:4. I can metronome and drum this 4:4 except for the fills and go right back to 4:4.

    Hello, lovely lady. I've been a Tool fan for decades and there are so many intricate aspects of this band that a mere post on PB won't do them justice. I would have to write pages to describe them as a band. One thing, Danny Carey, the drummer, has God status. I think you got that. Also, JMK writes the lyrics absent of the music. He writes the lyrics, the band composes the music then they marry them. The same goes for their videos. The videographer makes the videos without ever hearing the song. These little things don't even begin to describe the depth of this band and everything which surrounds them. Tool is undoubtedly, one of the most talented bands to have ever existed. Be well.

    This (along with Stinkfist) absolutely blew people away; mainstream radio had never played anything like it before. The whole instrumental experience was at another level.
    We native English speakers also had that "wait, what tf did he say?" experience, which was compounded by not really having internet access with answers readily available. Add in Maynard's disdain for interviews and refusing to give straight clear answers to questions, instead saying 'what does it mean to you?', as well as lyrics in the album liner not quite matching or listing everything lead to years of IRL debate about Tool lyrics.
    Before Tool *finally* released Lateralus, Forty Six & 2 was tied (musically) with Ænema for my favorite Tool song. H and Stinkfist are also killers...the whole album is an experience. Lateralus is still my fav album of theirs, but Ænima still holds up well today.

    Recommend: Kansas. Song is Closet Chronicles. There is a video titled lyrics on the screen for the studio version. Kansas was the first band where I had to get all their albums. 😊😊😊

    I’ve been a tool fan since I was a child when they were a garage band. It has been an honor to have been along for the ride over the years. No other band has changed so many lives. And I absolutely love people, finding their music and message for themselves over the years!❤

    You can just feel and see the love coming from Biss.
    I have to laugh a little when I hear songs like this one from this particular album. Especially when she says it's quiet at the beginning. I saw them at Ozzfest in 98 on the first stage. At the same time on the second stage was Motorhead. Needless to say Tool is in my top 5 loudest bands I've ever seen. Even the whispers rattled my bones. I still can't hear this song without remembering what each note felt like.

    Any time you attend a Tool concert you're pretty much there to see the musical instruments with Danny, Adam and Justin up front, Maynard mainly stays in the back while singing..

    There is so much about Tool that I love, ranging from the intensely thoughtful lyrics to the polyrhythmic beats and sounds that underscore the complexity of the music. Humans typically have 46 chromosomes. Maynard is singing about wanting us to evolve beyond where we are, that is why the “46 and 2”
