      Kurt C - I don't remember who said this but a famous musician once said that the single best piece of advice he's received was that if you really want to make a difference in the world, write a great song.
      I'll be the first to say that there's a massive difference between "guitar players" and "songwriters". Johnny Cash, Lenny Kravitz, Keith Richards, Dave Matthews, John Lennon, etc..all great guitar players, but more songwriters than anything else.
      Then you've got Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Yngwie, Robben Ford, Rusty Allen, Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, etc...that are all absolutely brilliant players..
      Nowadays you've got guys that can very much do both, write good songs and be amazing players. Keith Urban, Paisley, Vince Gill, etc... I know, I'm only mentioning guys within the country music realm because they're the only ones I can think of right now.
      My absolute favorite was Hendrix and we all know we'll never see another like him which is why I tell everyone that Jimi was not of this earth.
      I think the best days of that whole "guitar hero" thing have come and gone. But still, there's no substitute for practice and being the best you can be on your given instrument. Even if it sounds like a jumble of notes mashed together to everyone else. 😆

    • @mordantvistas4019
      @mordantvistas4019 7 лет назад +2

      Kurt C although technically impressive, and a masterful musician, the lick in of itself has no emotional connection. Think Buffalo Springfield "For What it's Worth". This song connects so many people to a specific time and place. The instrumentation is pretty basic.
      But I also understand what he is teaching here as well. It's merely a tool in the box, not the house.

Learning everything again has been very hard. I tried to just fret ONE note for so long and only recently have I been able to enjoy playing again at home. This makes me feel that NEED to play again just like in 87 at GIT after meeting Paul Gilbert.. it seems the best players are the most willing to share. I can't wait to learn again.

    • @tylarex
      @tylarex 7 лет назад +7

      diazzsama Economy picking kind of explains itself here, just a sweep after every set of 3 on one string, allows so much speed as you are essentially cutting the amount of movement the wrist has to do I suppose.. Not sure if that explains it but the wrist can be more stable and relaxed as nearly half the energy of alternate picking is needed. To get Rick's stability all one really needs to do is practise it a bit.

    • @diazzsama
      @diazzsama 7 лет назад +4

      +ThecoolMaxEverest Idk if you really have mastered economy picking. Been doing this for years, and it's fucking me over in terms of stability, picking consistency and stuff like that. In short how could you make economy picking not sloppy?

    • @martinmorales3195
      @martinmorales3195 7 лет назад +6

      diazzsama Hi. First of all you must use downward pick slanting exclusively. I personally like to divide the lick into small groups that are coherent with the lick as a whole in terms of pick orientation. I also add accents on the first note of every beat independent of pick orientation to keep the rhythm consistent. Cheers.

    • @glennsprigg2378
      @glennsprigg2378 7 лет назад +1

      Hard to explain, but it depends on the beat timing, and whether playing just 2 notes on a string,
      or playing 3 notes on a string, before progressing to the next string, to keep the 'down/up' flowing.
      FORGETTING THIS POST FOR NOW, imagine playing just 2 notes on the 6th string.... Down then Up.
      And then the same, (what ever notes you want) on the 5th string.... Down then Up. (IT FLOWS).
      Now moving to say the 4th string we want to play '3' notes !!!.... Down then Up then Down.
      Then maybe '3' notes also, now on the 3rd string. The LAST action was DOWN, so therefore
      you can START that 3rd string with an UP !! (Up then Down then Up).... etc etc.
      I always try to keep the WRIST flowing in a regular pattern/frequency, if that makes sense !!! :-)

    • @Ryan-ji3xk
      @Ryan-ji3xk 7 лет назад

      Sydaball Nope it's not just to each their own, not by a long shot. I love how people compartmentalize musicians (in this case, guitarists) into the same skill bracket because they have absolutely no idea what it is to truly be on a higher level of capabilities; be it speed, melodic intuition, improvisation, comping, technical prowess, etc.
      You're basically saying a novice garage band guitarist is exactly the same as a virtuoso, because its simply a matter of taste. with your logic, not a single great musician would ever get the credit the rightly deserve.

    Love the effortlessness of it! I really struggle with economy picking these days. I started with it and naturally felt fast with it, then trained up alternate picking technique and since then I get so much tension with economy. It's like reverse muscle memory almost!

    so hard for me to pkay light. luv the smushy feeling of the pick bending into the strings. but when i force myself to play light i really blow myself away how fast i can be but it doesnt have that good squishy mushroom feel from picking n playing hard. thx the motivation.

    Are those press-on nails on your right hand? I grew my nails out years ago to help in finger picking and I hated the feel of the resistance of the strings and how it felt in my nail bed. It was like a pet peave like touching paper right after you washed your hands.

      I think its to fortify them a bit and keep them from breaking. I've known rafters to paint their toenails for that reason.

      Most likely they are some sort of faux nails for finger picking classical guitar.

    • @toby1kenobe
      @toby1kenobe 7 лет назад +9

      As he plays classical too, I'm guessing that its a fake nail stuck on for strength, I believe Anna Whatshername, the incredible guitarist sticks on pieces of ping-pong ball if she breaks her thumbnail.

    • @guitarmichael
      @guitarmichael 7 лет назад +4

      That's cool I didn't know that. But it looks like Rick's other nails are white too on his right hand. And you do see guys like Zakk Wylde who actually grow the claws out haha.
      You're right though because in the instagram clip from "a day or two ago" he doesnt have a long thumb nail.

    • @qascarface

      I got no emotional energy from it, it sounds like a buzz saw or some malfunctioning machine. I'm not denying that its very skillful playing, merely that with the exception of soulless hard metal is completely useless. The primary role of the musician is to translate thoughts and emotions into sound, and this fails at that horribly. Just my take.
