Simple. Far from easy.

takes 12 months to learn and 4 seconds to play
So you're saying the pyramids were more durable?
Hahaha, 12 months, hahaha
You learned it yet Lol?
Smh
You mad bruh 😂 Even practicing it 12 months it will sound sloppy as fuck. This takes years of practice Unless you're a virtuoso and accomplish this less than 12 months.
Has science gone too far?
Mike Towey Didn't know God uses press on nails.
He made a deal with the devil to give him a ''god guitar'' skill
FireBottle He didn't need to; the devil wants lessons from him.
chemical revolution if all your wondering about is what pick he's using, id say give up playing guitar mate..
Ignore him. Alternate picking it takes a LOT more skill than sweeping. I never heard a good guitarist talk like that guy. Ever hear Guthrie Govan tell people to give up?
*Looks desperately for proof that the intro bit is fake/sped up*
Hogger it's basically 20 notes in less than 2 seconds. I can't believe it.
Marco Duò 20 notes in less than 2 seconds??? are you serious??
348frank348 the lick starts with 4 notes on the low E string and then goes up the other five strings in groups of 3 notes per string. That's 19 notes and by 0:02 the lick is already over so it is 19 notes in less than 2 secs.
Marco Duò well fuck me sideways. i will never be able to play this sh*t
Well, I have to say that if you take away the slide at the very beginning, it's probably 19 notes in one second
That lick was bananas
ayyyy
Greasy!
And peaches

insane WTF riff indeed, great tutorial as well, thanks!
I'm pretty sure Rick is turning into Randy Savage... Which is obviously a great thing.
Do you have any idea how much cocaine it takes to achieve that level...one does not just snort a line or two n take steroids one time in their life and reach Randy Savage mode
Its ok I never liked my face anyway. 100% melted.
This one of those bastard techniques that you sometimes do across 2 or 3 strings while just messing around, and then you instantly stop, completely baffled by what just happened, with no possible way of retracing your steps.. and the saddest part... no one was there to witness it.
So, Rick.. can you play it backwards?
Dude that happens to me all the time where im like, wow that was awesome.....let me do that again........wait.......what.......how did i do that again? Fu#k!
jamie flexman exactly bro
jamie flexman
I'm sure he can play it backwards as easily as you can say a sentence backwards.
This is why I often record my jam sessions.

Perfect comment. Straight forward. 🤣
@@Strings-jg2to Hey, thanks for bringing my attention back to this comment. It's funny....even after 4 additional years of practice, it still holds true.
Ok, on to the next hobby...
Rick Daham, indeed. This is the smoothest run I've ever seen!
The best guitarists always make you question whether you should quit guitar or give it everything you've got to get to that level however impossible it seems... I face this dilemma every time I see Rick play lol
CJdude20968 i threw mine in the trash this morning.
CJdude20968 that was beautifully put, dude.
CJdude20968 - Joe Walsh and Joe Bonamassa bring out those feelings in me.
Kurt C - I don't remember who said this but a famous musician once said that the single best piece of advice he's received was that if you really want to make a difference in the world, write a great song.
I'll be the first to say that there's a massive difference between "guitar players" and "songwriters". Johnny Cash, Lenny Kravitz, Keith Richards, Dave Matthews, John Lennon, etc..all great guitar players, but more songwriters than anything else.
Then you've got Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Yngwie, Robben Ford, Rusty Allen, Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, etc...that are all absolutely brilliant players..
Nowadays you've got guys that can very much do both, write good songs and be amazing players. Keith Urban, Paisley, Vince Gill, etc... I know, I'm only mentioning guys within the country music realm because they're the only ones I can think of right now.
My absolute favorite was Hendrix and we all know we'll never see another like him which is why I tell everyone that Jimi was not of this earth.
I think the best days of that whole "guitar hero" thing have come and gone. But still, there's no substitute for practice and being the best you can be on your given instrument. Even if it sounds like a jumble of notes mashed together to everyone else. 😆
Kurt C although technically impressive, and a masterful musician, the lick in of itself has no emotional connection. Think Buffalo Springfield "For What it's Worth". This song connects so many people to a specific time and place. The instrumentation is pretty basic.
But I also understand what he is teaching here as well. It's merely a tool in the box, not the house.
that is one gorgeous strat
Smooth, tasty ascending lick. Fabulous left-hand control. I like how you also nailed the key to all shred licks: practice slow. As with all speed techniques, including classical tremolo, the cleaner the notes the faster they sound. Well done lesson!
Keep rockin'.
He's going shift, shift, shift...I'm going sh*t, sh*t, sh*t as I fail miserably XD
SenorClam16 That made me laugh way too hard 😂
He's alternate picking is so efficient that it's like its floating around the fretboard!! Damn 😍

That's.... That's an IRL bug? Right? The left hand looks glitchy AF. Yeah that's a bug. Clearly a bug.
Oh wait...
I'm so inspired by all he's accomplished. I played pro for 25 years before a spinal cord injury left me with no feeling in my left hand and in a wheelchair 4 years ago. Learning everything again has been very hard. I tried to just fret ONE note for so long and only recently have I been able to enjoy playing again at home. This makes me feel that NEED to play again just like in 87 at GIT after meeting Paul Gilbert.. it seems the best players are the most willing to share. I can't wait to learn again.
The name speaks for itself

Some of the fastest playing I've ever seen 🎸
that was monumenterrific. I've never seen anybody shred so smoothly
How could your right hand looks so stable with economy picking at that speed?
Could you talk more about what's going on with your right hand.
diazzsama Yes Rick
diazzsama Economy picking kind of explains itself here, just a sweep after every set of 3 on one string, allows so much speed as you are essentially cutting the amount of movement the wrist has to do I suppose.. Not sure if that explains it but the wrist can be more stable and relaxed as nearly half the energy of alternate picking is needed. To get Rick's stability all one really needs to do is practise it a bit.
+ThecoolMaxEverest Idk if you really have mastered economy picking. Been doing this for years, and it's fucking me over in terms of stability, picking consistency and stuff like that. In short how could you make economy picking not sloppy?
diazzsama Hi. First of all you must use downward pick slanting exclusively. I personally like to divide the lick into small groups that are coherent with the lick as a whole in terms of pick orientation. I also add accents on the first note of every beat independent of pick orientation to keep the rhythm consistent. Cheers.
Hard to explain, but it depends on the beat timing, and whether playing just 2 notes on a string,
or playing 3 notes on a string, before progressing to the next string, to keep the 'down/up' flowing.
FORGETTING THIS POST FOR NOW, imagine playing just 2 notes on the 6th string.... Down then Up.
And then the same, (what ever notes you want) on the 5th string.... Down then Up. (IT FLOWS).
Now moving to say the 4th string we want to play '3' notes !!!.... Down then Up then Down.
Then maybe '3' notes also, now on the 3rd string. The LAST action was DOWN, so therefore
you can START that 3rd string with an UP !! (Up then Down then Up).... etc etc.
I always try to keep the WRIST flowing in a regular pattern/frequency, if that makes sense !!! :-)
The factory for "Betcha cant play this" licks
hhahahaah
even while Rick is talking, his fingers are air shredding involuntarily
Players Nails? Very cool! For classical and finger style players, these things negate the dread of having a broken nail. Great video and super playing! Thanks for posting this lesson.
Dexterity/skill: MIND-BLOWING! Gorgeous : )
Very cool!--No matter how much I practice or how much our band plays---I always can return to Rick for some new inspiration--He's Always up to something clever!!!Always get's me to pick it up and practice some more! Thank You!!!!!!
"The WTF lick" really describes this perfectly! Lol
Rick Graham you are a blessed bastard, tnx for sharing this awesome video with the world, you deserve everybody to suscribe to your channel, cheers matey!!
WTF!!!! Could you do a melodic minor lick same like this WTF??? I'm a great fan of yours from Brazil. Thank you so much and God bless your hands and life much more!!
Wesley Mendes I bet he could my friend!
Jimmy Geikie I think so!! He is amazing!
Wesley Mendes I bet YOU could, too!
No... I don't think so... :-(
Learnt this very lick years ago from a Richie Kotzen segment in one of those guitar mags. Nice to hear it played as it was meant to be played...you make it rip dude!!!
That's very impressive but, can you play it backwards?
I love your tone. Whenever I don't feel like practicing, I pull up one of your vids for inspiration! Thanks Rickhere.
Anyone else notice his nails?
He is a ridiculous guitar player who plays classical and Flamenco I think and you need nails to even attempt those master styles of guitar.
yes, they are on the ends of his fingers.
glad I could help :)
Yeah its pretty gay
It's 5:30am in Australia right now and I have just discovered Rick Graham. I think this will be good for me.
twinkle twinkle little star please,...
Excellent@ Wow, it makes so much sense when you do it slowly, and then...a little faster...but...once you add just a bit more speed...I am like WTF? Awesome video. Thank you.
Are you Shawn Lane's brother? Dad? Grand Dad? Nan? What the fuck.
kickenwing30 he doesn't hold a candle to Shawn Lane, no-one really does now or has ever. aside from Guthrie Govan and even then Shawn has even him beat. Either way, Rick is beyond amazing without question.
Ryan Gilchrist You are correct sir. This is an awesome passage and Guthrie Is a monster player! BUT... There's Shawn Lane, and there's everyone else.
I love how people compare guitar players, its really just whatever is your thing is. Like Les Paul says..."He's a mighty fine guitar player" end of story.
Sydaball Nope it's not just to each their own, not by a long shot. I love how people compartmentalize musicians (in this case, guitarists) into the same skill bracket because they have absolutely no idea what it is to truly be on a higher level of capabilities; be it speed, melodic intuition, improvisation, comping, technical prowess, etc.
You're basically saying a novice garage band guitarist is exactly the same as a virtuoso, because its simply a matter of taste. with your logic, not a single great musician would ever get the credit the rightly deserve.
Such a CLEAN strat dear lord oh my god so clean I love it
Steve T brought me here.
CALALALALALA CALALALA CALALALA ... I mean uhm, me too. :P #RickDAYUM
Love the effortlessness of it! I really struggle with economy picking these days. I started with it and naturally felt fast with it, then trained up alternate picking technique and since then I get so much tension with economy. It's like reverse muscle memory almost!
This is like Usain Bolt teaching you how to run fast by saying run really fast
ive learned this lick and played it loads and every time i see it it still intimidates me! anyway cheers for the inspiration, your a legend!
Set it to 2x speed because it wasn't fast enough.
I commented "what the fuck" on the Instagram video yesterday, so I feel like I did my little part in helping you name this video. So good Rick! Keep it up, and thank you for sharing!
This dude shreds ten times faster on a Stratocaster than I do on my Ibanez...
You need to buy a Stratocaster then.
The fact you make that distinction is the main reason you suck...
Love this sequence I learned it from RG in a "quick slick licks" vid a bit ago almost every guitarist that sees it asks for a breakdown it is a fun WTF during a blues jam, a real smooth head turner, thanks much Rick
so hard for me to pkay light. luv the smushy feeling of the pick bending into the strings. but when i force myself to play light i really blow myself away how fast i can be but it doesnt have that good squishy mushroom feel from picking n playing hard. thx the motivation.
Rick is an Alien, this lick is freaking awesome
"It's actually quite simple"
...nice
This 3-note per string pentatonic m7 pattern, looks to me like an inverted version, of the pattern that Paul Gilbert uses on Colorado Bulldog. Killer!
- Opened video in a new tab
- Heard the first 10 seconds
- Closed the tab "F*** that..."
The fingers on my fretting hand actually have to move when I play...wow! Killed it!
who came here from steeve t like hmm i can play this shit and then went like oh its pretty easy
Really enjoying your videos.. This is the first time I've found a "guitar" video on RUclips very useful.. Cheers..!!!
I put the beginning at 0.25 speed and it's still fast as hell… :O
That's a lot of control.. That's a lot of discipline.. Wow.. Beautiful..
You sir, are the reason why i have stoped practicing guitar.

That rising run, gliding is so gorgeous!

Are those press-on nails on your right hand? I grew my nails out years ago to help in finger picking and I hated the feel of the resistance of the strings and how it felt in my nail bed. It was like a pet peave like touching paper right after you washed your hands.
But is this Stratocaster djent enough?
That lick crashed my RUclips app no bs!
did you paint your fingernails?? wtf
he's a robot, his robot eyes need this paint to track his finger moviments.
I think its to fortify them a bit and keep them from breaking. I've known rafters to paint their toenails for that reason.
Most likely they are some sort of faux nails for finger picking classical guitar.
As he plays classical too, I'm guessing that its a fake nail stuck on for strength, I believe Anna Whatshername, the incredible guitarist sticks on pieces of ping-pong ball if she breaks her thumbnail.
That's cool I didn't know that. But it looks like Rick's other nails are white too on his right hand. And you do see guys like Zakk Wylde who actually grow the claws out haha.
You're right though because in the instagram clip from "a day or two ago" he doesnt have a long thumb nail.
This is actually a great exercise to work on finger stretches and strength. Glad I found this!
3:18 but I'm a left handed player...
Anshumaan Purohit its so stupid play like left handed. when you started to play the guitar you didn't know a shit with both hands. so why don't play like a righthanded?
i am left handed. I started out with my right hand, but changed over to my left hand a week later. It just felt more natural.
Nicolas Alves Cause not everyone can play right handed as natural as left handed
Great Lessons just signed up. Hey I`m also trying to practice this lick back down again. Does that make any sense?

Rick. I'll be sure to practice this over the weekend. Thanks.
Why are all these comments just ass kissing? I mean I get he's an awesome guitarist but don't you have something to say about the video?
Yeah like, fast is supreme. It sounds like crap.
Go fuck yourself Grump it’s a very well played clear ascending pentatonic scale, what do you have against great technique? go back to looking for UFOs
That's how it is on every channel. Most of comments are just memes and idiot opinions
Ohhh now I get it !! Dude, really appreciate it! But how much should I ask for selling my guitar? Is 120 USD okay?
WTF?
Hi Rick, great video, and thanks! Quick question, can you please give a tutorial for the ending part of that lick, e.g. the sweeping? Thanks again and keep up the great work.
Skillful but not musical
qascarface because it's a guitar lesson, not music
LOL XD nice one
qascarface "this riff is shallow and pedantic" get your fingers out of your ass
I got no emotional energy from it, it sounds like a buzz saw or some malfunctioning machine. I'm not denying that its very skillful playing, merely that with the exception of soulless hard metal is completely useless. The primary role of the musician is to translate thoughts and emotions into sound, and this fails at that horribly. Just my take.
qascarface lol thats fair everyone likes their own thing i was messing with you anyways gg
Damn. I was hoping for the whole thing lol. Awesome dude.
That is a seriously clean sweep!
Dude you are the man. Wish I could collaborate in any way at all with. Thanks for keepin the oldschool vibe in a bottle and all. Rock on!
