I was born without the ability to walk and I've suffered a lot because of it, but knowing that there are heroes with disabilities out there (although I don't like to use that term) gives me hope. Thank you. 😃
1) Hawkeye is deaf 2) Daredevil still focuses on him being blind, he can't see exact shapes and still needs assistive devices for certain things. 3) just because a hero's power may lessen a disability doesn't mean the character is no longer disabled. For example, an amputee is an amputee, no matter what prosthetic they have.
My statements about Daredevil and about amputees wasn't meant to offend or insinuate that they're no longer disabled. I tried to find comments and articles from people in this community before I came up with this list and there are quite a few places where these characters are questioned. For example, in this Tor.com article called "Extraordinary Abilities, Ordinary Disabilities," the author makes the statement that Daredevil "isn't blind in a way that a reader who IS blind can really identify with." A blogger who focuses on disability issues (LadyGeekGirl) says this about Daredevil: "Though he is still considered disabled, he is portrayed as using his other heightened senses to 'overcome' his blindness allowing him to be a hero. But these hyperrealistic powers may make it harder, not easier, for people with disabilities to relate to a character who supposedly has a disability." In an article for the BBC, graphic novelist Al Davison (who wrote a autobiographical graphic novel about his life with spina bifida) says: "Characters like Daredevil have superpowers that compensate for their disability. This is not realistic or fair." Characters with powerful prosthetics, aka Misty Knight, were referenced in a few of these but not to the extent of Daredevil. I wasn't trying to devalue them, I was only trying to present heroes that the community itself seemed to value and take interest in. I'm sorry if that didn't come across.
Echo is my favorite superheroine. Mostly due to the fact that she's Native American and I'm full blood Native American. It was actually only her father that was killed. The comics have not revealed what has happened to her mother yet. The handprint is actually a symbol of why she fights and why she is dedicated to being a hero because as her father died, he left a bloody handprint on her face. She fights for him. That's kind of why I love her. Deeply unappreciated in the comics and I'm hoping one day Marvel would give a better representation of Native American characters.
I’m visually impaired, and when I found out there was a blind superhero (daredevil) I was stoked. Regardless of whether his superpowers dominate his visual limitations or not, as his alter ego, he is basically normal, though he may use his powers in the quart room. I still think he is an amazing superhero, and I would love to find out if there are any other visually impaired superheroes, besides cyclops from X-Men. And, no, Glenn does not just refer to totally blind in this case. I should have said visually impaired. Thanks!
Kudos for marvel for not only hiring actual disables but also trying to bring newcomers along. Lauren Riddoff as Makkari in Eternals, and Alaqua Cox as Echo for the Hawkeye series.
i don't really like the "superpowers erase the disability" argument. all superheroes have abilities that go above and beyond realistic human limitations. batman is a non-powered hero, but is capable of dodging bullets as a result of his training blind people do use their other senses to compensate for their disabilities, so when they created a blind superhero, they exaggerated it in some way so he could be an effective hero if the series was set in a normal society like the one we live in, i would understand the issue, but if it takes place in a world where norse gods roam the streets and a giant green monster is one of the most famous heroes, a blind man with senses THAT impressive would fit in perfectly and still be disabled
Yeah, no one says they aren't actually disabled, his argument is that they are not fully relatable to a lot of disabled people because of that, or (the argument I would use) because their powers cancel out their disability, they do not portray the reality of being disabled (and fiction after all is always a reflection of reality in some way, even when you add fantastical elements), and additionally, if their powers cancel out their disability, in a way, it's almost like they're not actually disabled
As someone with a spectrum disorder (ranging from slight mental to often fatal) I loved oracle. My favorite thing about oracle is the fact that she adjusted. Because as I progress which is usually the case, I have to learn to adjust and it sucks.
thank you! I'm pleasantly surprise to see you didn't put daredevil on this list, I've made the same argument against him being considered a disabled super hero, not many of my friends seem to agree lol
You’re welcome! I try to caption as much as I can but it’s very time consuming but I figured this episode was especially important. I have over 500 videos covering all sorts of stuff, hopefully you find some of it useful.
Also, if any of you are interested in captions for other videos, just let me know. It's a bit time consuming, so I likely can't do many, but if there are topics or videos especially interesting, let me know and I can make those videos a priority.
Hey, could I be of any assistance if anyone expresses interest in wanting subtitles/captions? (E.g. I can write up the transcript a video and you can plug it in where appropriate in the video. Still time consuming, but just a little less.) Edit: Just realized my potential assistance would be more helpful if I could actually translate these videos, especially Heroes Like Us, into another language for the captions. But my Spanish is only much less than mediocre at best.
How about superheroes with PTSD? - Jessica Jones - Supergirl - Batman - probably Red Hood - Hulk - She-Hulk - Wolverine (both of them I'm sure) - Punisher - Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz)
Iirc, Xavier's paraplegia is somewhat a result of his powers. He has the ability to allow himself to walk, but it reduces his psionic powers to nil. Professor X has lost his powers a handful of times recently, and has always managed to regain his ability to walk as a result. It had something to do with fighting a psionic demon. I have no idea if that has been retconned.
What's funny is that initially some readers hated that Batgirl got disabled when Batman had his back broken by Bane and was in a wheel chair but a few issues later he was back to normal while Barbara was perceived to be frigid. Only later did Oracle gain a fanbase as a disabled hero
I am hard-of-hearing and my wife is deaf. I see very interesting superhero with disabilities. But what catches my eyes is ECHO. I find her so fascinating. I really want to know more of her and her actions.
Maybe cybernetic should be reconsidered, do they write it as the user feel touch or is it mostly set up as just a metal limb and they can never feel anything with it?
It’s a literal replacement for a lost limb or in Cyborg’s case half of his body. They are disabled characters. That’s like basically saying people who have prosthetics in real life aren’t disabled because they have prosthetics.
May I add to the list Punisher. He clearly has PTSD, while never outright stated, anyone who has read the comics or even seen the Netflix series can see it's a issue.
Okay third comment: I hate that they give Charles some way to walk every couple runs. Put him in a walker suit, or take his powers but restore his spinal cord? Hate it so much. Just let him be paralyzed. Real life disabled folks usually stay that way! Most of us manage, rather than get significantly better enough to stop treatment
A second comment! I hate when amputee characters have their prosthetic on 24/7! That’s not physically possible. It’s a great way to get a sore on your limb.
maybe I have Dyscalculia? Nah JK I'm just trash at math haha. I can understand stuff when I study it obviously, math just isn't my best subject. But wow, I feel bad for people that have that. I mean, she straight up can't do math. That actually sucks.
it never made it to a series but there was a one issue comic that came out a few years ago for free comicbook day called Silver Scorpion about a kid in a wheelchair who transformed into a superhero

> "I'm sorry if that didn't come across." Don't worry, it did come across! At least for me.
I have ADHD a learning disability so this means a lot to me and makes these superheroes relatable

You must excited about Echo will be in new Disney plus Hawkeyes series

This is a tough one, so please forgive me for any unintentional slips! Any feedback or corrections are appreciated!
You forgot Toph

There’s also Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. He’s hard of hearing.
The irony is that Hawkeye is partially deaf and hard of hearing in the MCU.
great video. The more I know about echo the more I like her character. Going to research more in to her.

omg I'm a big x-men fan but i never knew that Jubilee has Dyscalculia like me
I always loved her character
Can I just say thank you so much for the captions

Hey wow. Even captions in just English would be helpful if we have viewers that that might be hard of hearing. I'll let you know!
Please do! I'd be happy to help!

Great idea!

Silhouette from new Warriors is in crutches.
sorry for the bad spelling

awesome job!
You forgot Marvel Silhouette. She was apart of New Warriors.
great list man
Need heroes who were born disabled. For example Garret from extreme ghostbusters. Looking for a friend for her kid.
You forgot about SILHOUETTES, AND STICK
