Thanks mate, haha it's funny you mention that feature, I actually don't like it. The first thing I do is remove the stopper from the fitting as it's a pain when you just want water without a nozzle attached.
I bought the 20m version from the big green barn and I'm quite happy with it. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video, is that Gardena's website recommends that the hose be fully extended and left laying in the sun for a couple of days, with the water pressure applied. I guess its 'conditioning' the pvc and apparently its to aid the hose with its kink resistance.
I can confirm, doing this makes a HUGE difference. Id be willing to bet a lot of money that the vast majority of the negative reviews online regarding Gardena hoses are people who haven’t followed this simple step. Hell I only did it for one day (it was a very hot day) but it completely changed the characteristics of the hose. Best hose I’ve ever owned.
Absolutely agree, this is the most important part of these reels that consumer's forget! The number one reason people get kink's & bad retraction is because they fail to do this step when they first buy the unit. All you have to think is how long the unit has been de-pressurized sitting on the shelf at bunnings curled up in a roll. Every bit of PVC will develop a 'memory' of being curled up although leaving it in the sun with full water in the hose stops it right away
Thanks mate. I just bought 1 today. Can you do a video on how to get lawns as ridiculously green as yours? I’m in Melbourne so weather isn’t always great. Thank you so much.
Great review, I’ve got 3 of these. 2 x15 meter and 1 x20 meter. The 20 meter one has just broken after about 2 years of light use the spring has broken the hose will not pull out or retract. Gardena are going to replace it ,no problems. I have found the 15 meter ones easer to use. The larger one can be harder to pull the hose out and sometimes will not all retract, it’s like there is too much hose in side.
I’ve got one of those, Love it to bits. I prefer the European equipment and think the mechanics of the clip system work better in my opinion. They last for years. I’ve got and had Holeman BUT somehow feel it just isn’t the same, will always prefer Gardena. Only issue I had was the supplied bolts are too soft.
The 3 or 4 different reels from various brands I have used over the years cop a beating from the sun and fade, it is a shame they don't add UV stabilisers to the plastic. Edit that, I just looked at it and it is UV stabilised
Pretty good hose reel, only downside was the dowels they supply are very brittle/cheap quality and 2 broke on me while hammering them in with barely any force.
I just bought 30 meter today and after hanging it tried afternoon to use it and after watering doesn’t like to go back I opened on RUclips now watched your video but nothing happend dont like to pull out or even to take what is pulled out
@ Thank you for your fast reply really it’s new for me so don’t understand about it but a friend will come to check, I’m in Auckland NZ but of course I’ll send you the result after checking it following what you said, many thanks.
Have this model and also the same from last year. Like the new colour way better but really annoyed that they removed the storage options from the wall mount in the new model. E.g. on the older model you can hang your pistol sprinkler head into a slot on the wall mount when using my oscillating sprinkler.
I got one of these units, great retractile and top quality hose. However the flaw I had with mine is the rear top bolt failed and caused the top rear to split. Its also the point where the metal pivot rod has most pressure. It was also a slightly older model may of fixed the issue with the newer models
I thought “how’s Brenton going to make something as simple as a garden hose seem interesting”. So I watched it through. Well Brenton, at least you tried 😂 Sorry about that, but if you review a hose I can’t help but reel you in and give you a light spray 😉
How's this holding up? I saw another review on the giraffe ones and they weren't very durable. Hose link seems like the brand to get if you are looking for quality, but they are quite expensive.
Not sure if you’ll see this comment three years later but I have just installed three of these at my house and the pressure has dropped at all of them. I have tried changing out the fittings etc. Nothing seems to improve and the pressure is nowhere near as good as the normal messy hose that I was using.
Sounds like you have low pressure in your neighbourhood. There will be a small pressure reduction with any hose reel. Some are less than others (Gardena being one of those) if your in a modern estate you may have a pressure reducer fitted at your meter. A plumber will be able to confirm this and either adjust it or remove it altogether therefore improving your pressure.
@@theaussielawn Thanks for ressponding ! We are an older suburb in Darwin and the pressure is fantastic through a "normal" hose. Like.....over the top ! I have unfurled copletely and even that makes no change. A shame becuase otehrwise an awesome product.

Ahh bummer mate that sounds like an absolute nightmare, I have got 2 30m reels installed and I’ve not had that issue maybe the 15m unit has different screws . I’d be annoyed too mate . Glad you got it sorted though and hope you enjoy the new reel
Hey mate, yeah you raise a valid point it was a rookie error at my end. For what its worth I can report that the unit still functions beautifully and has held up to the hot northern wall like a champion.
Several comments, people happy with Gardena. That’s OK. The point I am making is 1)they are both made in China. 2) profits for the more expensive Gardena goes to Germany. The profits for the Holman stay here in Australia. My neighbour has a Holman reel they have had it for years all day the direct sun, still works. All manufactures of consumer products have duds. The question is, does the manufacture accept responsibility for the failure. In this case both have 5 year warranty. All I am asking is “I we can support Australian businesses first!”
I’m a big supporter of supporting Aussie I always have been but having German heritage too I’m happy to support them as well. As I mentioned somewhere earlier I’ve had several bad experiences with Holman products so I have not been too enthusiastic to purchase their stuff since . **Update you got me thinking re the Holman reel so I decided to do some research this is what I found on the Holman website, The hose in the reel is only 12mm and rated to 1000kpa where as the Gardena is 13mm and rated at 3500kpa. The warranty on the Holman is listed at 2yrs not 5yr. So unfortunately for Holman I feel that the gardena is a more sound investment.
My Holman reel broke, which is why I'm looking for something else. Holman doesn't give a shit because it's been more than 2 years, which is their warranty in New Zealand.
I have like 15 oscillating sprinklers, well may be only 5 but the only one that has lasted and works as intended is the Gardena. I used to steer clear of their product because I thought it was a cheap knock off from somewhere that the best brand name they could come up with was either Garden with an A on the end or couldn't spell Gardener, then when I worked out the oscillating sprinkler was so damn good I went to buy another and they were the most or close to being the most expensive so I thought I should look them up on the old Web and you can't beat German Engineering so these day's I look for Gardena first as brand of choice. My only suggestion to Gardena should you read this is I want an attachment caddy for all my odds and ends on board the hose reel. (a little compartment in the middle on one side) As always first class vid Brenton.
Thanks for the vid mate. What do you think about the noise when the hose retracts? I changed one of my reels to a Gardenia and love it. But it's so bloody loud when it retracts.
Hi Brenton thanks for that nice review of the Gardena they have been around for such a long time. A quick question for you I picked up a solo 417 (great sprayer )and I am looking at getting one of brass wands and wondering what is a better option the 50cm or the 75cm wand? Thanks for the videos keep them coming.
How does the pressure compare to the standard hose you replaced with this system? I bought and quickly returned a Holman reel a few months ago because it actually restricted the flow by about 50% compared to standard hose I had before it.. The convenience wasn't worth having to spend more time watering due to bad pressure..
@@terryscully7389 honestly still really well. It’s on a hot north facing wall the case hasn’t faded or become brittle. The hose reel still functions as intended. Very happy with it still
Great products and I now perfer that colour to the hoselink, I have a sprinkler from them and love the fact it has a hole cleaning built into the unit just unscrew it and poke the holes and then screw it back in👍
Hi mate no it actually doesn't move about in the wind at all. I always just leave it pushed to one side when not in use, there are no stoppers on the swivel and to date nor does there appear to be a need for them, Thanks for your question mate and hope you have a great weekend Cheers Brenton
I just purchased the Gardena Roll-Up 20 version. From the included operator's manual which details how to mount the unit, it states: 'The supplied wall plugs are suitable for cement walls (plaster up to 1cm). For other wall types, special wall plugs must be used' Like you, I'm mounting it to a brick wall, so because you used the supplied plugs into a brick wall, I was wondering if you've had any problems and if I should bother getting special ones.
No problems at all mate ive got 2 now and love them , I have sand stock bricks (solid) they bite in fine. Id say bricks are concrete like haha i'll worry about it if and when it falls off the wall 😜 they are a great unit hey you will love it
I have watched many utube shows and I wonder why they fix the reel so high I have six hoselink reels through out my garden and they are all low eg lawn tips has his hoselink half way up the wall
That’s a reasonable point you make Darryl, I reckon if I was to post mount one in my yard it would be low too. I don’t know if I consider mine to be too high up the wall of the house ? maybe a smidge 🤷♂️
If you are based here in Australia and its 5 or less years old reach out to Gardena they are great to deal with , No need for you to be trying to repair it from personal experience they have been fantastic with after sales support.
Gardena hose reel is a German company, the reel made in China. The Holman is an Australian company, the reel is made in China. Both have a 5 year warranty. Both have a non-kink hose. Both use common parts. So, what is your choice, pay a lot for a German hose reel made in China or half the price for an Australian hose reel made in China? At least buying the Holman reel the profits stay in Australia.
Ive actually had a few holman products in the past and unfortunately I have been less than impressed with them the first thing was their weather station the second was their misting system under my back veranda (out of direct sunlight) and within 2 years it just started to fall to bits. Bit gun-shy after such a short life span unfortunately.
Honestly my last hose link was a good hose but... its a pain in the ass to reel in. You need to service the sprayer head at least every 12months could just be mine but I'm a bit over it and while I only have a small property it's a bit of an overkill. Gave it to my father in law and this video was just In time currently looking for another alternative👍
@@anth1839 I have 2 Hoselink Hi Flow 25m they are a few years old now and reel in perfectly. I have to lube the spray guns every year too but it takes all of a minute and the quality is just so good.
Yeah I'm looking at these but apparently the hose can't be replaced. On Holmans the hose can be replaced...but the Holmans have terrible reviews. I wonder if anyone has opened up these Gardenas to see how repairable they are. I agree the Gardena is the best on the market with a great warranty...I guess we just live in a world where shit breaks every 5-10 years or so and we have to replace it.
Doesn't even show or talk about the operation of the reel itself. We dont need to know how to drill holes and unbox, we need to know how the reel works and the operation of the Wall mount hose guide. Yes it looks great, but would be nice to know how well it works. how smooth it operates. your hole video is kind of waste of our time and yours.
Thanks for your question, Although Ive never used a hose link reel I have discovered several standout benefits of the Gardena over the hose link, Firstly the warranty Gardena is a 5yr warranty where as hose link is 2yrs on reel unit and 12months on hose connector with flow control. The actual hose size of the standard hose link is 12mm (yes the "high flow" one is 14mm) Gardena is 13mm also the actual pressure rating of the hose used in the hose link is much less at just over 1000kpa where as the gardena is a whopping 3500kpa. All for $10 +/- more.
@@whodiedlee honestly mate I’ve never had a fitting burst . Not to mention I can easily upgrade to brass fittings for extra longevity. But hey these are just personal views after all Having said all that if hose link are interested in having me review one of their reels I’m more than happy to oblige with honest opinion and feedback 🤙
Hey mate, another great video. I actually got one of those hose reals about 6 months ago. Nothing wrong with it. Also got a 20 meter roll of hose from them as well. It was the most expensive option, with the guarantee of no kinks. And the fuckin thing is the worst hose i have ever brought. If you dont go to great efforts to un roll it perfectly before use, it kinks every metre or so. Hose real perfect. The normal hose terrible. Your buffalo looks amazing. Magic stuff that rain.
Gardena advise you uncoil the hose, leave it as straight as you can filled with water in the sun for a day or two to get rid of any memory effect in the hose from coiling it for packaging. If you haven’t done that they can be a pain.
@@philrichmond5919 actually yes now you mention that they do say it somewhere on the website but its not easily found. maybe it should be on the packaging of the non hose reel hoses
Actually thats a good tips about filling it with water and leaving in the sun for a few hours. It does sit in the sun all day, rolled up, but empty. Will try laying it flat full of water for a few hours. Thanks for the tip.
Probably right mate but I was most interested in this particular company, As Ive always found their stuff to be of good quality, And too this very day the unit is still functioning as intended and the outta casing is showing no signs of sun damage or fading, its worth noting on that point too its mounted on a north facing brick wall that gets sun all day long. All that aside did you enjoy the vid or not so much ?
That’s a great question, I can’t answer it unfortunately but I’m sure if you reach out to Gardena via an email or Pvt message on Facebook they will get back to you with an answer 👍
The Aussie lawn actually has one foot in each camp Aussie / German here 😉 I'm happy to do do a review on a hose link also but yeah every now and then I will do various reviews on products or manufacturers that I like or are curious about 🤟(Im fairly sure the hose link is manufactured in china also but happy to stand corrected)

Like you, I'm mounting it to a brick wall, so because you used the supplied plugs into a brick wall, I was wondering if you've had any problems and if I should bother getting special ones.
I need one of those, you've sold me
It’s so convenient i like it more then I should 🤣
Hard to pull out. Should be a release to make it easier.
I wonder how they could achieve that. The tension is what helps it retract
How do you open to try to fix it.
If you are based here in Australia and its 5 or less years old reach out to Gardena they are great to deal with , No need for you to be trying to repair it from personal experience they have been fantastic with after sales support.
Have you had any problems with the weight distribution in yours bricks?
Hi Ian no mate everything has been fine, I have sandstock bricks though so not sure if that makes a difference or not..
What is the product you plugged in to your tap? Can you provide a link please?
Do you mean the tap timer ?
Is the older one better from Gardena or this one?
Hi mate ,
I can’t actually answer that as I’ve never had / used the old one, this is the first hose reel I’ve owned / used
I'm low on the wall (40cm)
It must be at least a few centimeters in order to work in place
Please measure the installed reel.
I’ve got one here at home and the frogs love getting into mine. But bloody good product tho
So I’m not the only one with that problem! They don’t half squeal if they get trapped when you pull the hose out.
Ohh really well I guarantee that will be mine too 😳 I have huge green frogs everywhere here
@@philrichmond5919 yeah they let you know when they’re not happy about something
@@theaussielawn yeah they let out a holler when something happens inside. Yesterday I had 36 green tree frogs in my backyard
@@Murrabung it almost makes your blood run cold when they really Yelp 🤣
Gardena hose reel is a German company, the reel made in China. The Holman is an Australian company, the reel is made in China. Both have a 5 year warranty. Both have a non-kink hose. Both use common parts. So, what is your choice, pay a lot for a German hose reel made in China or half the price for an Australian hose reel made in China? At least buying the Holman reel the profits stay in Australia.
or a Hoselink, which I have and IMHO best in market
Ive actually had a few holman products in the past and unfortunately I have been less than impressed with them the first thing was their weather station the second was their misting system under my back veranda (out of direct sunlight) and within 2 years it just started to fall to bits. Bit gun-shy after such a short life span unfortunately.
@@marcstolk6682 Im more than happy to review a hose link and do some sort of comparison but yeah i really like the gardena stuff.
The most valuable part of a roll up hose is it’s ability to retract. And retract whilst still under pressure….but you didn’t show this.
Hi Gerard thanks for the comment. I can confirm it does roll up equally as well while under pressure 👍
@@theaussielawn good to hear. Makes it better than the Pope one I have. Hardly surprising as Gardena stuff is always good
@@gerardvidler5001 Plus from personal experience if anything goes wrong or isn't up to standard they will help you out with little fuss 😎
I have the 35m, very pricey but worth it.
Nice one mate 🤙
Hoselink all day!
Im defs happy to try one but can I ask why you prefer the hose link over the new Gardena hose reel?
Sorry it wasn’t what you’d prefer to see mate. I’m definitely no professional film maker that’s for certain.
Thanks for the video =)
Just purchased one today. Now for the easy install.........."Darl, where's my bloody drill?" "Damn it, don't have a 12mm masonary drill bit."
why this vs hoselink and hoselink is cheaper?
Thanks for your question, Although Ive never used a hose link reel I have discovered several standout benefits of the Gardena over the hose link, Firstly the warranty Gardena is a 5yr warranty where as hose link is 2yrs on reel unit and 12months on hose connector with flow control. The actual hose size of the standard hose link is 12mm (yes the "high flow" one is 14mm) Gardena is 13mm also the actual pressure rating of the hose used in the hose link is much less at just over 1000kpa where as the gardena is a whopping 3500kpa. All for $10 +/- more.
@@theaussielawn yep I agree but the fittings won't ever burst
@@whodiedlee honestly mate I’ve never had a fitting burst . Not to mention I can easily upgrade to brass fittings for extra longevity. But hey these are just personal views after all
Having said all that if hose link are interested in having me review one of their reels I’m more than happy to oblige with honest opinion and feedback 🤙
Hey mate reach out to them I reckon they will help you re the 20m hose.
@@jasongarbutt4242 did it end up helping
you could do that same review with 95% of the hose reels on the market
Probably right mate but I was most interested in this particular company, As Ive always found their stuff to be of good quality, And too this very day the unit is still functioning as intended and the outta casing is showing no signs of sun damage or fading, its worth noting on that point too its mounted on a north facing brick wall that gets sun all day long. All that aside did you enjoy the vid or not so much ?
First Aussie 😁
haha love it
Gardena or subsupplier?
That’s a great question, I can’t answer it unfortunately but I’m sure if you reach out to Gardena via an email or Pvt message on Facebook they will get back to you with an answer 👍
Wahre made?
Hi , this one is made in China
Who is producer?
That is probably a question best directed to Gardena themselves. 😎
Can get 35m, at least in Europe.
Yeah Unfortunately its not offered here in AUS
Dear oh dear - Aussie Lawn promoting German products.. Go get yourself a Hoselink. Absolutely the best on the market and they're Aussie!
yep, this!
@@theaussielawn Cool man. Just ribbing you in the usual Aussie style :-)
Still made in China, though.
@@johngrear6506 na it’s all good mate 🤙 I’m not a snowflake ❄️ 🤣
It is an overpriced piece of garbage, my wife purchased one 18 months or so ago from Bunnings and it just shit itself with the level wind drive belt coming loose and now cannot retract because it just bunches up in one spot and you guessed it the receipt is no longer readable....grrrrr
have you reached out to gardena, explaining the issue including faded receipt ?
Nothing worse then a kinky hose. Next bit of kit foe me after water tanks.
hahaha

Thanks for sharing your view mate
you did not even bother to check the pull or lock in the hose.. are you a joke????
Be kind mate.
Hey mate, thinking about buying a toro prostripe mower. Rotary mower, with rear greens mower roller. They look awesome. New to Australia, $3,200.00 RUclips them and check them out. They look bloody awesome.
Hey Jase your the second person in 2 days to tell me about them, I did actually see something pop up on stalk book about them, Ill do some homework on them and watch some tubes on it cheers mate
That style of rotary mower has been around for years in the UK, Webb sell them and also Hayter. The Toro is so similar to the Hayter Pro that I suspect it’s a rebadge of the British mower.
@@philrichmond5919 I even think masport did one years ago too
@@theaussielawn still do, called the Rotarola. Sold in the UK. Honda do one too for that market.
