  • Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, Hokkaido is a unique and fascinating burial site that combines traditional Japanese elements with unexpected modern sculptures and architectural features. Established in 1982, the cemetery covers an expansive 1,800,473㎡ and is open year-round.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by numerous moai statues, similar to those found on Easter Island, along with a replica of Stonehenge and a large Buddha statue. These curious additions were likely created by skilled gravestone masons to showcase their craftsmanship.
The cemetery's most notable feature is the "Hill of the Buddha", designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando in 2015. This serene mound is carpeted with 150,000 lavender plants and conceals a 13.5-meter-tall seated Buddha statue. Only the top of the Buddha's head is visible through a circular opening at the center of the hill, creating a striking visual effect that changes with the seasons
