Severum Cichlid | Care Guide & Species Profile (Heros Efasciatus)

- This is a spotlight on the Severum Cichlid (Heros Efasciatus). We walk through the background on these cichlids, as well as a care guide. We touch on the different types of Severum (Red Shoulder or Rotkeil, Green, Gold, Red Spotted and Turquoise Severums.
Tank size is the primary consideration with these fish. We'd recommend a 75 gallon tank at minimum for an adult. Regarding tank mates, it would be wise to have back up plans if you're putting these with the aggressive cichlids out there (Jack Dempsey's, Green Terrors, etc.). We've had luck in our own experience, but it just something to consider!

As far as selecting suitable tank meets it's entirely depends on the behavior of that particular fish.I've seen severums get along with gouramis and tiger barbs.Same goes for the dietary needs there is a big variance between fish to fish.

Underrated fish
Floating plants like wisteria grow fast and the severums really like to shred it and even snack on it. I have three large Amazon swords that they occasionally tug at, but for the most part leave intact. IMO Amazon swords are hardy enough to withstand severums, but keep them planted in a pot or several inches of substrate with a few rocks to protect the roots.
True. I think since I've had a few severums along with electric blue acara, that they tag team and eat the plants. I'm sure some plants could work if you do it right - like in your example. Thanks for watching!

i have a question, what should the water hardness be for a severum? I see they pair with blood parrots and also blue acaras but i need the water parameters to match for all the fish but online it shows severums hardness is 5 while the others range about 6-18? im lost lol

I have a ton of gold severums, they have red freckles but I think dont think it has enough red to be a called a red spotted severum. They are 2.5-4 inches and I dont know what's a good price to sell them. When I was looking around for prices they were all different. Do you know what's a good price to sell them?

my gold severums have this black film on them . i ve treated it as a bacteria, and also have treated it like a fungus and i cant get rid of it. i have some other african cichlids in the same tank and ive never seen them with any on it. this has been going on over a year, I stop messing with it all n all thinking maybe the meds were messing with them. its still on the gold severums. any suggestions. could it be ph, i never test that really. i really hope u are familiar with this and have a tip for a solution. thank you

My golden severums don't want to eat anything except flakes and green lettuce. I'd tried so many things they just spit it out. Also they have lot of similarities with Oscars.They are mild diggers and very intolerant of certain things like a water heater at least mine are.
Brother my red spotted severum is about 2.5 inches recently bought he was eating aggressively , now ut has no interest in eating pellets or vibra bites , only sometimes eat blood worms that too a small amount what to do

With blood parrots, I have a community 150g bichirs and few Angels? but can you say they're docile as them?
I think a severum would work well with those tank mates. They’re very similar to blood parrots in size and aggression. Overall they’re usually docile

i have one with a blue face, they sold me it as a green severum but my fela has more of a blue when he got into my tank. so i name my severum blue

Both, but sinking has always worked well for me

It’s not ideal but it’s actually what I have out of my tap and my severums are doing great. It helps if they were bred in similar levels. Wild caught might have harder times adjusting

Can they live with blood parrots and Red Devils
Yeah they should be able to. Some might say the red devil might pick on them, but they kinda do that with most other fish. Got a turquoise severum with my blood parrot and they're fine together.

I would be worried about the flowerhorn, which is known to kill any tank mates. Probably best to keep them separate

My Severum fish gave eggs before 3 days, but other fish ate their eggs. I have separated my pair in new tank on same tank. When they will breed again? How much time they take to settle in new tank & to breed again?
I would think they would in a few weeks or so. It may take them a bit longer if they're getting used to the new tank. Just try to be patient and it should happen again soon

Nope, they can definitely be bought separately. I have 3 different types all bought at different times
