Imagine if they gave every audience member a copy of Sheik Yerbouti? The grey haired housewives would start off with I Have Been In You, get half-way through it to "Aw' little girl, there ain't no time to wash yer stinky hand... Go 'head 'n roll over. I'm goin' in you again" and jump out the window.
I miss this show. I wish more episodes would show up. If it wasn't for Bobby Van's untimely death. This show would have lasted another 5-7 years easily.
Epic, Frank Went Down To Bobby Vann's and Put On The Eyebrows. I doubt Charlie Daniels with his fiddle playing deal with the devil could have done as well as Frank here. You really get to see Frank put what was commonly called "The Eyebrows" on his work. Hard Work? In the pre-show backstage interview we see Frank asked the question if this is hard work, Is being a guest star contestant on this game show hard work, Frank responds "I don't know if it's hard work because I haven't done it yet" While that's the surface answer Frank was always ready to put on the eyebrows on any form of work he put his mind to. While one thing is said and done on the surface , Frank stating "...the most important thing that will occur from me doing this television show is my mother will see it". Classic FZ interview response. It's all there. Humor does belong on television. Frank was serious and he made it through with the Eyebrows attitude getting the prizes for the lucky audience contestant he was playing for. The skits Frank had to watch and not laugh at were funny, he just kept on the Eyebrows and did not laugh but seeing Frank propulsioned out in the guest chair and all these really cheesy 70s commercials is what was just as funny as any skit. I mean did you ever have these mass produced bagels. I mean if anyone has ever had a real NY Jewish Bagel Bakery bagel, a boiled and baked bagel, the one and only way to make a good bagel, it relates to the the phony cheese on the pizza dialog in The Blue Light. There are just far too many cheesy commercials to comment on here but the laughs are coming from Frank's attitude and the commercials. Even how Frank took the promotion of Sheik Yerbouti. Could he seem less interested when the host took Sheik Yerbouti out and started talking about it. Frank just kept the eyebrows going, just in the zone of winning this game. Let's get serious, having made Frank laugh, it's one of those moments in life that if you ever had the chance to get Frank to laugh at something you did in his presence, by design or by chance operation, it's great to see Frank laugh in a common setting. But here, these comedy guest stars, clearly they have talent, they had some funny skits lined up for Frank. They acted out some funny skits. Frank was in no way going to say, you can make me do anything. You can't make me laugh. Frank's energy was all into winning the prizes for that studio contestant. Whatever she won was ot flakes US frosting the cake with a paper knife item. Now the winner has to pay a very large % gift tax, was it even worth it. Well I wonder where that gal and her gifts are today. Maybe she became a Zappa fan, have his music a listen. Now that's a winner. Thanks for sharing.
This would have aired 4/1/1985 or later because the afternoon game block on USA which a lot of people remember bowed on 4/1/1985. Make me Laugh and Gong SHow were on USA late nights starting on 10/1/1984
I forgot all about this,I saw it when it aired. To me it looked like Uncle Frank was regretting this but the last two comedians almost got to Frank and you can see him smirking.
Frank didn't even come within a mile of laughing. I don't know what you were watching...but I'll bet he was smirking at the stupidity of the humor which sucked. For you I suggest two things. One: See your optometrist immediately. And Two...consider drinking less alcohol. You're Welcome
Really? These aren't really getting me, but they're slightly before my time (I was born around this time) but the "You wanna get dinner or smoke it later" did make me laugh, but that was alreayd almost 60 seconds.
So what if you release 5 albums in the same year and are too tied up to commit to a week's worth of episodes of a game show with celebrity panelists such as Match Game or Hollywood Squares? Then why not commit to just 5 minutes on a game show where all you have to do is not laugh for 3 minutes at a rate of a minute per comedian.😃
My God, how embarrasing. Who the hell on the staff of that show thought for even one second that they could get Zappa to laugh at such stupid shit. I mean, c'mon - You're not going to get the guy that wrote "We're Only In It For The Money!" to laugh at the 3rd grade stupidity that Kenny Johnston is doing. Zappa had just put out "Sheik Yerbouti" at the time, one of the most humorous albums he had done in a long time (and probably one he didn't top on the humor scale for the remainder of his career).
USA Network was clearly one of the few networks to repeatedly give Frank Zappa a platform in the 80s and 90s. It's not that other networks never had Frank on but if you added up the times FZ was on USA in the 80s and 90s we should all be thankfully Frank had a platform. Back in those times fans were grateful for any presence, now we see far too many fans bitching and moaning about Zappa. John has been so very nice to share his TV source archives. This is clearly a Sheik Yerbouti promo opportunity on TV. As a fan of FZ from the 60s I well understood that Radio and TV opportunities were very limited. As time has moved forward and we can see a large sampling over a long period of time I find it best to keep a perspective of the moment in time these opportunities presented themselves. Speaking of in the moment, many socially restarted areas did not have cable TV during the original broadcast. Many regions of NYC , one of the largest metropolitan areas on God's Grey Earth did not have cable TV until 1986. So many people never saw the original broadcast or repeat broadcast in 84' Even MTVs Halloween 81' original broadcast escaped many New Yorkers that could not leave a VHS or Betamax recording while they were at the shows. This is no Bogus adventure. This is something Frank was doing that helped get his image and product on TV. What's sad is that fans would give little care or concern of not so simply achieved promotional opportunities of his work. We can see a part of FZs eyebrows, a serious attitude even if it seemed like a waste of time. Frank was playing the production, as he did in many interviews and TV appearances with his own unique energy..It's clearly Zappa and it's clearly sad that some fans just don't get it. John, thanks for sharing. If someone does not appreciate any portion of your archive that is understood but I for one want to give you thanks for your care of sharing these TV appearances. Cheers to you mate.
With this woke culture,it would be impossible to play such short comedies or sketches... Is it right? Or is it another attempt to define the perimeter of what we can say and what cannot???
20:45 Zappa: I audition a hundred jerks like this a week. This ain't gonna happen.
Frank was too busy thinking up his imaginary guitar solos for the upcoming recording sessions for Joe's Garage to laugh at those clowns.
The commercials are surreal
Linda was a banger! Gorgeous Hair as well
First time I saw him laugh was when he played a bicycle on the Steve Allen Show.
RIP, Gallagher. Sledge A Matic is in Heaven now

Probably because Epic records paid for promotion.
