  • My mother was born in Hell Hole Swamp located in what was then called bloody Berkeley County during prohibition and the great great depression. Many of her relatives made moonshine. It was the only means for the poor to make a living during a time that there was no social safety net.
Just like today, the poor took the risk and went to jail while crooked politicians and judges made the real money. Many of the wealthy families that made their fortunes on the backs of the less fortunate remain prominent in modern Berkeley and Charleston counties.
These moonshiners provided spirits to many large cities and gangsters like Al Capone. One famous tale involves Capone sending goons to Hell Hole Swamp to settles a dispute. They wore their fine clothes and drove fancy cars; never to emerge from the swamp.
Just like today, the rich men walk away and the poor men have to pay!
