Legacy in politics helps but if candidates win repeatedly, it is due to their work: Pushpendra Saroj

  • With the 18th Lok Sabha formed, several young MPs are set to enter the Parliament including at least four MPs who are only around 25 years of age. Son of veteran leader and ex-minister Indrajeet Saroj, Pushpendra Saroj has become the youngest parliamentarian at the age of 25. The new MP, who has an MBA from Queen Mary University of London, says that while he always thought of joining politics, he didn't think it would happen so early. He says he got support from the elderly and youth.
Pushpendra feels people voted for change in Kaushambi and that he exacted his father's revenge after defeating BJP's Vinod Kumar Sonkar who had defeated his father twice, first in 2014 and then in 2019. Puspendra however says that he didn't use his father's name but banked on the work done by him when he was a minister in the BSP government. He says that the election was fought not by politicians but by the public themselves and that people did not share their views openly during election because of a fear of FIRs and being sent to jail, which is why nobody could believe that Samajwadi Party will be able to win so many seats.
The fight of Kaushambi had turned into a battle of prestige due to several videos of the outgoing MP getting leaked, in which he was purportedly seen resorting to using bad language and talking about corruption. When Raja Bhaiya's Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik) did not field a candidate, a huge vote bank of the party was up for grabs and statements of NDA leaders (Anupriya Patel) about kingdoms helped their campaign, Pushpendra says.
He adds that while having a legacy definitely helps in politics, if a public representative is winning repeatedly, it is only possible because he or she has worked for the people.
