thank god I found this. someone lost a tire and rim on the freeway and I was the lucky driver to hit it in the dark. ripped out my box and the bottom pipe that hooked up to box. hopefully my senser is still working after that hit because that was the only part that didn't get ripped out. I picked up the pieces along the freeway but they are not in good shape and this is a easy fix because my box is already out
+Emmanuel Dedobets Glad to see you are OK. Let me know how it goes
Horrible horrible horrible. Runs great on idle. As soon as I hit 25mph it starts jumping. When I go over 30 it's normal again, better then normal to be honest bit once again when it hits 40 same thing jumps until 45mph and works like a champ again. Funny thing is it don't stall out but almost does. Ran fine without the box but since I reinstalled it to this mod it's horrible. Is it possible that I got a little smaller filter size and that's causing the change in airflow? I got the smaller size down from the one you got, a little shorter.
+Emmanuel Dedobets Have you tried cleaning your mass airflow sensor? Try that next. Use some mass airflow sensor cleaner, or electronics parts cleaner
I didn't have time to get a cleaner but tomorrow morning I will and I will also try removing the filter temporarily around the block to see if maybe it's a low airflow problem and needs the next size up. Had a similar problem on a go-cart as a kid so thats why i was curious if the ford could have the same problem even though it's not a gvc Honda engine. Will give you a update 2morrow, if that is the issue it would be good to know for everyone. Only reason I got this filter was because it was 20 bucks compare to the next one that's 30 and I just had twins so budgets the game my friend :)
+Emmanuel Dedobets I understand. Congrats! I've got a 3 year old son and a 4 month old baby girl. Budget is a big deal
Dude, you're a genius! Info is hard to come by, and most of the mods are convoluted. Nice improvising and use of existing parts, thanks for the info!!
Was looking at either buying a 400$ replacement or a 200$ kit then I found this and did the exact same thing. Thanks man
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Dude, this was awesome! Worked like a CHAMP. I did the *exact* same modification using the *exact* same parts in my daughters 2004 2.3L Ford Focus with 122k miles on it. So grateful to you for posting this. You rock!
+blairwag1965 That's great to hear! Thank you for sharing
I did this exactly like on the video, on my 2007 Focus, and it made a night and day difference. You rock, man. My car is breathing healthier, and it feels zippier than with the plugged up "lifetime" air filter.
Just bought an '05 focus wagon with 45k miles. I certainly don't trust those layers of sponge in the "lifetime" air box. You made it look easy and I plan to do the same. I'll update this post when I do. Thanks for a wonderful "how to" vid!
Dude. So glad I watched this video, I was really about to drop a good 300$ on a cold air intake. I have an 03 zx3 2.3 duratec, after having installed an aftermarket exhaust and this little tweak on my car it literally unleashed the beast in it.
Thanks a bunch man. No more lifetime air filter bs, my cars breathing now😃
Me at the store buying the parts for this mod:
AutoZone employee: but your car has a lifetime filter you don't need to replace it it's good for ever. You're gonna get a check engine light and it won't run right.
My focus 2 years later: running clean as a whistle
I just did this air filter modification on an '07 Focus with 193,000 miles on the "lifetime" filter. The car breathes so much better and has more pep too. The engine simply operates better. Thanks so much for the upload!
did it help mpg
Did this and it worked PERFECTLY. Most useful video, never would have thought!
Just did this yesterday, worked like a charm. Highly recommend. Only cost 34 bucks
What cost 34 $ ? The ensambly?
Thank you for this video and your help!!! Install went smooth and now I can rest assured that the car I bought for my daughter has a new filter on it!!!!
+roldan Hamilton You're so welcome!
Great Modification Brother! I couldn't believe what Ford had done to this air intake system!
Hi Scott, thanks to your video I was able to follow along and do this myself today. O'Reily had the parts in stock. I got them and had it done in about an hour and half including cleaning the MAF and deliberating about cutting the tubing.
This mod has worked well for me since I installed it
Did you end up cutting the tube? And if not, what did you do differently?
Hey Man, I run a speed shop and I’m a Spectre dealer. A friend brought in his 07 Focus today and asked about doing something similar for his intake. Thanks for making this video, it’s gonna work out perfect for him!
That's awesome! I was just looking to save some money and it worked out great!
Thanks man I'll do this for my Focus as well 👌👌💪🔥🔥🔥😎 Great job #TeamFocus
Thank you for this info man! Just did this to my '07 zx5 and it sounds world's healthier in the breathing department, definitely a performance increase too! The lifelong air filter had over 180k I cracked it open and it was black almost all the way to the last layer of filter. Definitely time for a change and this saved me a bunch of money on doing a factory replacement, appreciate it!
I WOULD LIKE TO PERSONALLY THANK YOU JUST DID MY 2006 2.0 FORD FOCUS MANUAL ZX3 AND LET ME TELL U WOW CAME TO LIFE THANKS AGAIN FOR DOING A VIDEO MUCH APPRECIATED 👍
Thank you so much! This guide helped me through replacing the stock air box as I'm at 211,000 miles. The car sounds much throatier now which I love
You are a life-saver! I bought a used 2006 focus that came with an 08-11 air filter box but the original 06 air filter is still attached at the bottom. At the same time, the hose that would have attached to the air filter to the resonator wasn't there. Needless to say, I was baffled beyond belief but this video has cleared up a lot of confusion for me. Thank you again!
Thanks, did this last October to my 05 focus and it runs and sounds great ever since!
Does it cause a check engine light? I'm thinking about doing this to mine, but I need to pass emmisions every year and I'm worried it will throw a code.
It hasn't gone to check engine light yet and I did it almost 3 years ago
Awesome! I'll do this then. Thanks for the fast reply. Nice video!
You're welcome and thank you
Remember that some states do a visual inspection for part of the emissions check, some after market filters come with a sticker that states that they comply with emissions testing, some do not. Missing that sticker will cause you to fail the visual inspection, I know, I forgot the put the sticker on, failed emissions, went home and put the sticker on, went back and it passed the emissions testing.
i have the same year model, 5 speed. ive done this change 2-3 times and my issue was finding a new mass air flow sensor mount that would fit. i made one out of 3 inch pvc and it didnt run well at all. i was afraid to cut the original piece like you did but if i can find a back up online i will definitely try it! thanks for this video!
+Travis Woods mine has worked perfectly from the beginning. You want to cut downstream. Not upstream
Thankyou man. Im about to do it on a 2006 so hopefully if i follow you to the T i should be good..
I have a 2007 Ford Focus. I did something similar. Removed the entire air box that comes on the vehicle. These air filter systems are meant to last 100,000 miles and are about $500. Once I did that, I got a Spectre air filter from Autozone ($25) and installed it before the MAF. No issues amd runs great. The air filter you get at Autozone comes with adapters so you really don't have to modify much. Hope this helps someone. Great vid!
+Ruben Arjona Thanks for the info!
I have a 07 Focus zx3 with Duratec 2.0 5sp and I'm about to attempt something similar to this. I'm connecting a tube to throttle body and then map tube to metal tube with filter on bottom. Just deleting the air box pretty much and adding a tube in its place. Filter will be at bottom of bumper area and I'll be using a jug cut to fit around the filter to protect from water splash. Seen it done this way on my nephews car and it worked well. Only cost was pipe from muffler shop and filter. You can choose whatever type of piping you want but it has to have a bend or elbow coming out of throttle body to angle it in the right direction
Thank you for the how to do info. I wish you were close to me to do the work i need Thanks again, Don
Thanks for watching!
Thank you I almost put mine in backwards had to watch your video to dubbed check
Quick note for anyone doing this, you need to mount a shroud of some sort under the filter or any decent puddle will soak your filter...I learned the hard way.
Sweet I'm definitely doin this on the weekend coming up cause my car sounds like Doo Doo probably cause the lifetime filter 😂
3rd time I seen this went on impulse and did it. Took about 50 minutes with a trip to the store and knowing what parts to grab. I’m always looking to mod my intakes for better mpg/performance. I’m at 28-31 before mod.
Made another cut on the left over plastic to have an internal coupler between blue collar and factory black inlet.
it feels aloy better still a bit shaky but i will be doing a spark plug replacementso hope fully itll get better thank u very much for ur help
+Genaro Garcia You're so welcome
You can also run a hanger off the battery box for a great mount
Thank you for posting this. Been looking for some time to locate the MAF on a 2003 Ford Focus 2.3L engine set up. This matches that, and now I see where the MAF is located and I can replace it and or clean it. Don't want the extra noise this MOD would add to a already noisy car. But without having to tear the fenders apart to replace the filter this would be a cheap repair. MAF are not that expensive, or a can of CFC MAF cleaner can do the job. Bravo!
Thank you Scott. I Appreciate it very much.
Just did an airbox delete today. Entire process took about 2 hours. I retained the pipe that the MAF sensor plugs into and connected it directly to the throttle body coupling. Bought a cone style air filter online and it sits behind the headlight with just enough clearance. I love the hissing sound it makes and I feel like the engine can breathe better. Stupid Ford did a terrible job at designing the factory airbox unit. I was glad to finally re-route the air passage so that it doesn't have to run alongside the fender well and draw in air from the windshield cowel. Stupid design by Ford. Much happier with my car now. Thanks.
You have Facebook or Instagram? Or can you send me a picture of what you did ? I want to try and do the same thing
@@track4smiley I don't really need to send you a video on how to do it. The process is easy. Just remove all of the intake parts up to the throttle body connector hose. The air inlet tubing that runs from the side fender up to the windshield cowel is optional...you can remove it or leave it in. I basically removed the pipe with the MAF sensor and plugged the fatter end to the throttle body. Yes by doing so your MAF sensor will be backwards which will make the engine not run correctly so either flip it around and secure it with gorilla tape or if you're keen on some precision cutting you can take a dremel with a rotary cutter attachment and reposition the MAF connector port so it sits at 180 degrees from the original placement. This way you can use screws to secure the MAF sensor down. Then find a cone air filter with a 3" inlet and it'll fit snug on the end.
You can try a reverse fitment to avoid having to modify the MAF tubing but you'll need an adapter for the throttle body and an air filter with a 4" inlet I'm guessing since the fatter end will be where you would attach it to. I decided to connect the fatter end to the TB because of the way it fastens securely once you tighten the hose clamp. Play around with it to decide what results you are happier with.
Oh and you probably already know but the process involves taking the driver side wheel off and partially removing the fender liner to get enough clearance.
This is what I was looking for. If that blue silicone peice he used was even needed. My Spectre filter I just bought for $30 has adapters for 3", 3.5" and 4" so should drop right on the MAF pipe with the 3" adapter.
Edit: Going to attempt doing it so I don't have to flip the MAF around 180°. After reading your other reply I suppose that is what the blue silicone hose was used for in the video.
@@rxtuninginc8444 yeah that silicone piece will come in handy for your application. The cone filter I bought didn't come with one, hence the reverse order that I installed. It'll be a snug fit when you're done fyi but there should be just enough opening so the filter will sit right behind the headlamp. I ended up taking a saw and cutting about an inch or so off the small end of the MAF tube for it all to fit down nicely. Cool part about it is you'll get a intake hiss on the start-up and maybe get 1 or 2 hp as a bonus. I never officially dyno tested this but it feels as though the throttle livens up a bit especially if you're trying to get up to speed on the highway. Also your username is hilarious haha. Have fun tinkering with the set-up.
@@scorpionwins6378 cheers, thanks!
Everyone is more familiar with my cousin Mike Hunt! Have a good one and appreciate the reply, realized it was a year old afterward! 🤟
Great video I did the exact thing, and used the exact same products and was night and day. Thanks for the video
Thank you for sharing!
Hey Ben do you happen to know what size filter you used. I know in the video he used a universal, but there are non universal sizes for cheaper. As much as I've put into this car for my kid, I could use some saved money! Thanks
Scott All be it long I really appreciated your video, I have a daily driver 2005 ZX5 with 201,000km didn't realize the filter was lifetime. I'm going to source the air filter (not sure where to look in Canada (will try Canadian Tire) I imagine the filter is pretty dirty, this looks like it will help. 2 questions, is the filter you bought reusable like K&N and did you bother removing the bottom portion where the filter is, is that even required? Thanks.
I used to have an '05 Focus 2.0 L. The stock air filter is supposed to be replaced at 100K. It is a bad design. I replaced mine with an aftermarket box of the same shape that took a regular fram filter that slid into a tray and bolted on. It cost over $200, but I was desperate for a fix at the time since the car was having problems. If I had more time, I would probably get myself something like you put on, or an airbox at Pull A Part from some other Ford Focus, and rig that on.
Have you been happy with the aftermarket box? Other than it being expensive?
thanks Scott...very helpful.
+MT Mals You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Did you ever find the correct mass air sensor adapter if so I'd like to know where as I'm in need of one myself.
I know it's been a while, but I did this mod on a 2004 Focus with a Zetec and it resulted in a MASSIVE increase in intake temps and I had to replace my thermostat housing 5 times before I realized my mistake. I know the 2007 has the intake relocated to the front instead of behind the battery, did you notice anything like this? That's the only thing stopping me from doing this on my 2007 ZX5.
What kind of filter is that measured as well as the connectors?
Did you have any problems with check engine light, like running too lean code. Wanna do this to my wife's car but don't want to have trouble getting it inspected. Thanks and great video
ok thank u very much for ur help will be posting how it goes
+Genaro Garcia Awesome! Keep me posted
Hi Scott, I see thats a 2.5 to 3"coupler, is that a 3" filter? thanks
Your sir are a genius.
Might try this to see if it fixes my p0171. I run a k&n cai which runs 300 bucks i got it new for 90 bucks. So may just use my old spectre filter to do same thing
i have a 2006 ZX4 and i want to put a aftermarket intake on but i cant find any! where did you get the intake on this video?
What size adaptor and filter did you end up using?
thanks this wat I been looking for
+Darius Austin Thank you for watching
Thank you kind sir this will be greatly helpful
How has the car been? Any replacements? Gas mileage?
I found a simpler way to do this and I'm very ampped to try it out. however I am still sceptic on cutting the MAF tube? did you not worry of a velocity change or change in air flow affecting the sensor?
You will have to let me know how it goes
Will the new throttle body fit & line up on a 2005 ford FOCUS ST???
Did you notice any heat soak? Like, slow accel or poor performance when hot?
Do you have part numbers for the air filter and rubber adapter?
where did you buy the filter can you send me a link and is it still working good ?
Well did it help with anything other than the sound?
it stop chaking and it feels more better i cant put pictures dont know y. but thanks for sharing ur video it help out alot
+Genaro Garcia You're so welcome! Thank you for the update!
Just remember that your factory box was getting air from below an away from the engine, the cold air intake is now closer to the engine which means it's gonna draw hotter air
Not if you take off the splash guards bb
What exact size is everything? I have the same car and I want to do this sooooon. Thanks!
thanks for the video helped me out could of took me longer if i havent watched this video 👍👍
+Chevy Chick you're welcome! Thank you so much for watching and letting me know. I'm quite proud of this one. Single best performance MOD on my Focus
Great job I'm doing it to my car tomorrow
I was collecting the parts I need to to this. I was wonder if it was a 3 inch filter size?
You can also do the same on a 2003-2007 Ford focus
Will this cause any check engine codes?
Just did mine today. Any modifications made to your set up or is it still running well?
+Bo Diddly nope. It's been running great since. Thanks for watching!
I have a 2006 focus ZXE and I want to do this modification. What model spectre filter did you use ? My car has 233 thousand miles on it. I just replaced the exhaust
spectra 8136, and colour you want.
Looks damn good in my opinion.
Thank you for the video
+Nirmal Thank you for watching
How many inches is the trottle body
Where did you find the part to replace the boot ?!?!
Is that 4” to 3” reducer?
what is the name of the kit that you used
Scott whats the part # on the blue adapter who makes it thanks steve
Your car now takes in all cold air from the fender-well , she breathes really good now enjoy it!!
I did this to 08 focus gives it a little more pick up I think I used a solid plastic pipe then a curved one bought from oreilys the filter is sitting toward the bottom that's where I found the outside air comes in best
+michael parks nice!
did your car not get a check engine light soon after putting the new one on mine did
if the blue coupling is rubber how did you clamp the flexible part of the intake around it?
+JAYSON SNYDER it's hardened rubber. So it stays rigid
Have you encountered any issues with the MAF sensor after changing it out?
after ur mod you ever run into check engine light issues or any other problems?
+Blake Christiansen No. It's done a great job since
I read on a blog that this will make your car not pass the smog test because the PZEV is gone, did you smog it and pass? I got the same car but an 04
If anyone's reading this you can't do this is in California which is some bull.
Hey I was wondering how your car is still doing? How's the gas mileage? And is there any chance of this getting wet?
Nah its high enough up in the engine compartment to be fine. I ended up running a hose from front lower grille up to the area where filter sits just to bring some fresh air to the area the filter is sucking air in from. I also made a bit of a heat shield to block the filter area off from engine heat. This isn't really necessary, especially if you run a hose to bring some fresh air up there, the exhaust manifold is on the back of the engine beside the firewall so the filter location is away from the biggest source of underhood heat anyways. Works great, sounds great, definitely a little more punch and throttle response on the butt dyno and gas mileage is better for certain. Considering the cost was only $30 (Plus a couple beers ha!) The mod will pay for itself in a couple months with the fuel savings. That is if you can actually keep your foot out of it.... that throaty intake noise is addictive!
Did this to my ford focus zx3 se 2005 works great...thanks
That was awesome 👏 thanks!
Where did you get the parts from?

thank u very much will be buyng the part and doing this job my car has been doing some vibration and i have change the motor mounts and saw one video that the air filter might be clog up did urs used to do the same problem? by any chance u dont have the part number of the air filter?
+Genaro Garcia I had a similar vibration problem. I replaced my upper motor mount and that solved the problem. As far as the filter I used it was one I got at my local auto parts store.
I did something like this but having some issues sometimes it runs fine and sometime very slow idk what to do
+Socorro Lopez do you have a Twitter account?
what is the size from the coupling and the size u used for the filter?
+Genaro Garcia 2 1/2 and 3 inches
It may sound "better" but the heat from the engine compartment actually lowers the horsepower.
How much lower is the horsepower through those dirty, dirtfilled sponges? How much easier is it to swap the new filter? What if you swapped to a washable k and n filter?
Don't be a karen, ok?
Thank you so much!
Hey just did this today, the car is bogging not sure how to fix?
lol wear ur protective equipment... want to protect urself against grease lol that's funny bro that was a good one
ppl tend to be stupid, hahaha better do that claim before anyone says they fucked up because of him bruh.
I did something of a frankenstein CAI to my s10. It makes a big difference if you make a diy firewall with heat shielding. Doesn't look the best but I got a 18 hp boost and an extra 25 ft lbs of torque.
You bought parts for this. I heard you say Specter, think, but what part numbers? I've thought about doing this for some time, but the MAF is what stopped me, not just fitting it but the potential for air filter oil to foul it. I've been messing with motorcycles for decades, and it is easy to over-oil the things.
A warning: I think filter oil can da
Cool Man! I got an idea now
+dorian james Awesome! Thanks for watching!
mpg any better ?
You've might have answered this question already, but what is the size of that Reducer Coupler on either side? Thanks!
+roldan Hamilton 2 and a half to 3 inches
Thank you Sir! One more question. I've got everything to do this mod. One thing I'm worried about is due to the weight of the filter itself. How well did the mod hold up without attaching any brackets holding it up? Have you had any issues with the plastic tube vibrating off or breaking?
+roldan Hamilton it's pretty light. Mine has held up great. You might want to put a bracket on there for good measure
I did it and my check engine light came on... I think i have it the wrong way😬
What is the spectra part numbers
Can anybody pls tell me what’s wrong with my car I have the same car a Ford Focus 2005 zx4 and it keeps choking when I’m riding around I’ve changed cat, MAF, o2 sensors, fuel pump, head gasket and more runs good and everything it’s just that I can’t find what causes that problem and I’m not gonna pay when I’m shure is something I can fix pls HELP
