  • In this video we take a trip using EV auto until we run out of electricity and then it goes to Hybrid mode, in the end, we get 100.3 mpg and use .33 gallons of fuel for our 38.4 mile trip.
This is my first of these videos and plan to do some more so stay tuned if you are interested. The next video will be the same trip only using EV only mode until we run out of Electricity.
    Enjoy

Dustan. There really doesn’t seem to be any clear explanations if the operation modes of Prius prime. Ev mode is simple. Drive 100% electric up to 84mph for 25 miles. Ok good. Then if you turn that off, it functions just like any other Prius and gets 50something mpg. Ok great. But what about EV auto. I’ve been under the impression that ev auto is a 3rd mode that gives you around 130 to 140 mpg. If true, for what distance range can you achieve that if you have a full charge and have not used EV mode at all. Just ev auto.
I have watched Toyota produced videos on the prime as well as countless other youtubers with their explanations and they are all very vague. They give plenty of into on ev mode. But not much on ev auto.

Ev Auto allows the engine to kick in for efficiency for acceleration or hill climbs. Ev only will not allow the engine to assist. Ev Auto will only slightly extend ev range and will primarily use ev until it's consumed.

The gas engine always starts cold. Maybe its wear soon in older gassers

What exactly does the EV auto do? I never use it because I have no clue what it does.

It just tries to figure out which is the most efficient electric or petrol. So if you have it on and accelerate fast or go on a highway above 60 and get a decent hill it will kick on the engine. Much more complicated than that but those are the basics. No need to use it if you have enough electric to get to where you need to go but I use it on occasion when I know I will run out of Electric anyway. Hard to use in the cold sometimes because once it turns the engine on just for a little help it must stay on until the engine reaches 132°F

Using Auto EV on just flat ground doesn't get you much. I went 78 miles in Auto EV.
