I just realised something, because I am so used to knowing the lore behind everything, for the first time ever I realised that when you said "I am going to be painting...colours of the Kronus Hegemony" I had no idea the point of difference you were making but it made me realise. If new comers to this hobby come across your video and this isn't unique to you, they will have no idea what the official thing looks like and I know making content and having anything from anyone else is always a dicey properistion but maybe have an official miniature artwork or something? Especially if your going to have a point of difference? Just a stray thought and you asked for thoughts on it, smooth as always... Smooth behind... Smooth bu-
It looks fantastic! However, I am confused, why did you prime in black and then again in grey? Why not just prime in chaos black and touch up in grey and carry on? Is it to create matte black or does it lighten the black? I really love the gold and will be using this scheme on my upcoming Votann army just looking for short cuts.
Thank you You really should give Scale75 a try. Maybe start with this black and see what you think. It’s a colour I think everyone should have in their paint rack. Links in the video description on where to get them at a discount 👍🏻
Thanks for all the great info. New to painting and your videos are by far the most… dynamic in info. I really appreciate that you answer questions others don’t.
I like it, the gold-for-yellow swap feels appropriate for space dwarfs. Definitely appreciating the Leagues more for seeing how they look in this colour scheme too, the range is growing on me. What is that base, though? It looks fascinating!
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the video. The base is from a GW industrial style base set I found instagram.com/p/ClcryaDInA5/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= They’re very cool and I thought tied in well with the idea of them boarding space hulks I’ve added a link in the video description where to buy them
Those Einhyr are chunky! I love the Votann's aesthetic. It's clear to see that the tech they're using has a common ancestor with the Imperium's tech, just branched off into its own thing a long time ago. Black and gold will always work well. That matte black in particular. Allows the gold to shine a little more. The brush sizes are a handy touch. Helps a lot when considering what to use for what kinda detail.
Thanks for watching man Yeah, I’m a big fan of their aesthetic too and I’m pleased with how the colour scheme worked on them. In keeping with the GW leagues but that little bit different for the better 👍🏻
Maaan what a killer tutorial, tbh one of my absolute fav to paint black armour - arguably the best I’ve seen on black armour and I’ve watched damn near all of them on yt!
I've just started painting. Loving it, it's super relaxing, close to meditation. I'm getting the same vibe from watching you carefully paint as I do when I'm doing it myself. Amazing work, the detail on the face, wow!
Thanks for watching. Yeah! That’s exactly what painting is for me too. A way to zone out and relax. So glad that comes across in my videos too. I figured there’s already loads of channels which are loud, high octane entertainment, so why not have a chilled relaxed channel instead 🤛
I learned quite a lot from this tutorial and especially on how to thin paints. I have three airbrushes but I find I am more interested in brush painting and trying to obtain a smooth finish. Thank you for this tutorial and I will be watching more.
Thanks for watching man, really glad you liked it. In terms of paint thinning, I’ve just posted a video on exactly that topic which you may find helpful too ruclips.net/video/sBDVPoNXyVI/видео.html Let me know what you think 👍
i have been waiting for this to drop! ive seen the pics in a few groups and has inspired me to paint my cygnar faction for warmachine in a similar fashion.
Nice one, great choice 👍🏻 this scheme should look amazing on warmachine cygnar. Please send through some pics when you get them done. Would love to see ‘em 🤘🏻
I absolutely love this color scheme and will probably use it for my Space Marines (I already have my Votann in a different scheme). Also, this tutorial is incredibly calming and detailed, so thank you very much for the hard work!
Brilliant man, please let me know how you get on with it. I’ve tried to keep things a simple as possible to reproduce so it can be easily used for batch painting too 👍🏻
Great video series - watched your paint thinning video (which was great) and then saw the Votann painting video. Just finished assembling my combat patrol set so was thrilled to see it. Have ordered the paint bundle as linked in your comments and excited for it to arrive! :)
This scheme is fantastic. I love the matte black. I found your video from posting your paint thinning video in a FB group and I'm shocked you don't have more views and follows. Your paint thinning video is excellent and incredibly informative. Love your channel!
Thank you, really appreciate it. I think my channel suffers because I don’t do the whole clickbait stuff. YT really seems to like that sort of tactic. I’ll stick to making videos my way, and then the right people (like you) will find me eventually 👍
Love this scheme. What do you think about using Black Legion from Citadel if we dont have access to Scale 75 or maybe you could recommend another flat Black that you like.
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the video. Honestly, I don’t think there really is another black that comes close to the properties S75 black has, because it’s just so matte. I really wouldn’t go with a contrast paint as an alternative. They’re just too satin. Corvus Black could work, with some recess shading of nuln oil. But if you can try to get some of the flat black from S75, you won’t regret it. 👍
That scale colour is perfect. I always struggled a little with Scale75 paints as they are very thick and need some work to be really good, that put me off when I was newly back knto the hobby, but I think I could be tempted to pick it up for something like this. Really solid work dude.
Thanks man Scale colours are beautiful paints. You really should give them another go. I know some people find the a bit off putting being gel based rather than water medium, but they thin down beautifully with some water, and as you can see, they produce such amazingly smooth finishes. If you’re struggling with thinning them, give my paint thinning video a watch, it explains how I know the point to thin to. And it’s exactly the same for S75 paints too ruclips.net/video/sBDVPoNXyVI/видео.html
I really like the color choices that you made, especially the “tacticool” flat black. Reminds me of the original Squat technicians, who wore leather jackets, heavy engineer boots, and sunglasses. I see bits of that in the model, like the heavy-looking boots, large rivets in the knuckle that could be thought of as silver biker rings, and even the squiggly gold embellishments that make me think of the zippers on a biker jacket. I honestly didn’t think about collecting the squats until I saw pictures from this painting guide on your Facebook page.
As for the video itself, it was very helpful and easy to follow. The mini is well lit, your speaking cadence was just right (not too fast or slow), good enunciation, and I like that you use single-pots of paint instead of mixing, even if you have to use multiple brands to get the exact color you want. I would have liked to see how you painted the partial face in the helmet, because painting flesh is different from armor plating. There are also some terms you used (like zethyl basecoating) that I didn’t quite understand, but I figured out the basics fairly quickly. I do appreciate the links that you included at the end of the video, which are always helpful. Overall, great job.
Thank you. I’m glad my scheme has made you see the new squats in a different way. I wasn’t too keen on the standard GW colours either, so I thought I’d try something a little different and I was pleased with how it turned out. I agree, the black does give the leather biker vibe, I hadn’t thought of that but it does suit that now you mention it. Thanks for watching the vid 👍🏻
Thank you, that’s so great to hear. I have put quite a bit of effort into making my videos clear and easy to follow. So it’s good to know it’s working 🙂 Apologies about the reference to zenithal at the start of the video. I appreciate it’s not necessarily something everyone will be familiar with. All it is, is rather than just priming my minis with a single colour, like black or white primer. I do an additional step. So, I prime all over with black and then when that’s dry I apply a second light prime of a light grey but only from above the mini at about 45° all round. This results in all the model’s top surfaces being brighter and lighter than the lower ones. As if it was being lit from above. The reasons I do this are, • to make details easier to see and therefore easier to paint (also shows them on camera easier too) • allows me to see which parts of the mini should be highlighted and which should be in shadow • and lastly, it gives me the option to not apply paints as solid colours but I could if I wanted apply thin glazes of colour which will tint the light and dark primer and actually give highlight and shadow in one step. I didn’t opt for the last option in this video, but if you would like to see what I mean, I did do it in this video for the red armour ruclips.net/video/QDFkC4oAhQQ/видео.html Hope that helps Thanks for checking out my channel
Just found your channel and I love your paint jobs. You’re coats come out so smooth. I would LOVE to see a video of your thinning process. Keep up the great work. Excited to see your channel grow!
Thanks for watching man and so glad you found my channel. Great to have you onboard 🤛🏻 You’ll be pleased to hear I am actually planning a paint thinning video, as it has become my most asked question now. So watch this space 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I’ve watch probably every paint thinning video there is. I’ve been having trouble getting the right consistency of paint and the right finish on my model. A lot of channels stress downloading your brush. What I’ve noticed in your videos is that when you paint your base coat, your brush is fully loaded and you just go for it and you still get a smooth coat. One thing that a lot of thinning videos don’t cover is the drying time in between coats. I think I saw a hair dryer in one video of yours, so it would be cool to see have you handle the drying process.
Fantastic video and paint job as always. I was wondering if you'd consider doing a short video focused around how you thin your paints and apply base coats, your models always have this fantastically smooth finish.
Thank you 🙏🏻 Actually you may just be a bit of a psyker and have read my mind. I am planning exactly that, as it’s by far my most asked question Just trying to work out the best way to visualise it Stay tuned 👍🏻
All jokes aside, I thought of doing this same paint scheme on an imperial AT-ST (Star wars). Bandai/Namco makes some really great Star Wars models and after not doing a model since the 90’s it was a blast to do! Thanks for the video!
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides you ever done a guide of your favourite paints? Not sure if those kinda things are good algorithmically but I always enjoy seeing miniature artists must have or go to products.
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides can only speak for myself but I know I'd love to see. I'm sure others would agree though coz who doesn't love seeing people's little gem products. Kinda like your blue tack video. I found that I testing and didn't realise it had so many uses. Always useful.
I know you've already posted what the other Votaan would look like on Instagram, but would you be willing to do the tutorials for each? Hearthkyn, Berserkers, and Hernkyn Pioneers? Or once you had the general scheme down, it should be pretty easy to know what and where to paint?
Just a video editing request. Could you show us a "before and after" after each step? No one does this and it would REALLY help if we could see not just the process but the stark change w each step. Love your channel!
Thanks for the feedback man. I do try and show the model before and after each step but I take your point, its not side by side. I’ll have a think and see how I can change my video template Thanks for supporting the channel 👍🏻
Found you through Reddit and this is exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for! If you don’t mind, what colors would you use for the cloth on the warriors and leather coats?
Excellent, the final result is excellent, perhaps I would like to see a more detail on the plasma, not completely convinced with just a contrast wash. Keep up the good work 🙌🏻
I like it, not bad, I just miss a bit of gradient in those big armour plates... The edging is beauiful, amazing work. I am not sure if with a dry brush making some middle-tone gradients from the edges could have help...? Just wondering, an artist here getting into the minuature business. Thank you.
Is it weird that I like all the edge highlighting? It feels a lot less ambiguous (for lack of a better word) than other highlighting techniques, which has always driven me batty.
No, not at all. I think it’s perfectly normal 🙂 Edge highlighting gives you total control over the end result compared to processes like drybrushing or contrast paints say. I actually find it relaxing and a great way to zone out too.
What a result... gorgeous! I was wondering if you had a video demonstrating your handle setup? Do you use a hand drill + wire to mount minis off base? Or is it just blutack on a spike?
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the video I do have a video which demonstrates my painting handles, yes. It's a bit of an old one, so not as slick production but should still be what you need. Just jump the chapter on paint handles ruclips.net/video/KxF8t6k39cE/видео.html
I love this scheme, i am about to start an amry. Gonna follow the premis of this video for sure. Do you think you could swap a purple for the gold and it would still work with the red weapon? Also, do you have any suggestions for which purples i should use,. looking for a more matt finish?
Absolutely love this scheme of yours, really pops! I'm going to try and follow it as best as I can for my army, but was wondering what your vehicles would look like in that scheme? Many thanks!
So vehicle wise, I would go with majority matte black and use the gold accents sparingly. The black should be so over powering because the highlight will help to break it up and most of the vehicles have a lot of under chassis and tubing details etc which I'd do in my dark silver from this video and that should balance it nicely. Think of it as NASA stuff but with black instead of white Hope that helps. Do let me know how you get on
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thank you so much, it'll probably be a little while before I summon up the courage to try but will let you know how I get on!
What brushes to you recommend? The ones I use lose the sharp tip after just a few sessions. Brush care tips? Also, great job here! The finished paint job looks amazing. I’ve never heard of this game but dwarves in futuristic armor? I’ll need to check it out.
Thank you I recommend Artis Opus brushes. They’re all I use now rb.gy/w3lzt5 And for brush care and general tips, give this a watch ruclips.net/video/chBHaXh8iko/видео.htmlsi=sUQEkLbW0kPOHSKS
Thanks, really glad you like it 👍🏻 For the overalls of the infantry I went for for dark reaper. You want a dark shadowy blue / green basically, which is in keeping with the scheme and just different enough from the black so that it doesn’t all blend in together. For the piping, you can keep it simple and just go eshin grey or you can go strong contrast and introduce the yellow from the GW scheme or anything inbetween really. It’s a detail you can use to make the scheme more personal. Hope that helps I will try and paint up an infantry mini for this scheme as it does seem to be a coke question
Love the Flat Black!, and the gold just makes it pop so well. One question I do have is how would you take that colour scheme to the other Votann models? Replacing the yellow to gold but on the other models where the yellow is used on fabrics(pants, shirts).
You're absolutely correct and even when I was saying it I knew it was wrong Hence me only using it very quickly at the start of the video :D Hopefully it didnt distract too much from the content Thanks for giving the video a watch though
Thanks for watching, great to hear you liked the end result. Hopefully Santa will be able to change at such short notice Perhaps he could get them here and get a decent discount too? 😉 elementgames.co.uk?d=10493
Love the guide, love how it's set up, I personally would not be able to paint a whole army like this, edge highlights kills it for me,not what you did - that part os awesome, but it kill me to do them :)
Thanks for watching I totally get edging highlighting like this isn’t for everyone. If you wanted a quicker but lower level finish, you could replace with light drybrushing to pick out the edges. Any messy bits can be tidied up with the flat black and still get a good looking result 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides great idea, thanks, I am going to shamelessly trying to copy this paintscheme, I feel the appeal in the back of my brain telling me "this is the path to pick"
No worries. Really pleased you enjoyed the video and found it useful. Finding that perfect scheme is always tricky, so when you do find one which you like, go for it! 👍🏻
This is a really wonderful tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to make it and for including such great advice. May I ask what the organisers are that you use to hold your paint pots?
Thank you very much. So glad you enjoyed the video. The paint racks are tiered acrylic nail polish display racks. You can usually find them new on eBay
Very nice tutorial, as usual, and stunning result. However I am confused. Why not prime black and paint the gold areas brown first and then gold? Would you save enormous time like that?
Thanks man. Absolutely , priming black would work well for this scheme and the addition of brown before applying the gold would make for less coats of gold being needed to cover the black. The reason I opted for the grey over black priming was for a couple of reasons. The first is it helps bring out details for the camera to try and make it easier for people to follow. So, I now just prime all my minis the same way, often in large batches. And that usually means I’ve primed the mini before I’ve really decided on what colour scheme I’m going to go for. The zenithal grey over black priming enables me free choice on doing glazes over the zenithal to take advantage over that or simply block in solid colours and layer up that way. So for the confusion 👍🏻
Thanks for watching, really pleased you enjoyed the video. I have no plans to do separate tutorials for the vehicles in this scheme, but if you’d like advice with them then feel free to message me on Insta @brushstroke77 👍
How would you apply this scheme to the warriors and berserkers? I like this black and gold but it seems like it would only work good for the armored units not so for the ones wearing mostly fabrics.
I absolutely love this colour scheme and I'm thinking about painting my very first army in it. How would you paint the Heartkyn Warriors however? If you don't use any yellow, painting the 'cloth' part on those models black may not work as well? Any tips, anyone?
Thanks, really glad you like it 👍🏻 For the overalls of the infantry I went for for dark reaper. NGL... I think I might switch to this scheme for my Space Dwarfs. I'd started some with a more stone grey (Mantic Forge Fathers)...but really like the black/gold look (was honestly a scheme I debated on when I started them). Will probably paint my killteam in this color and see how I like it.
Thanks for watching man Yeah, I was forever changing my mind which way I wanted to go with these In the end, the black and gold just felt space biker gang like and that's how I remember them from before. Plus, black and gold is such a classic combo, it's hard to go wrong Let me know how the Killteam goes and whether you're persuaded to switch from your exisiting Mantic Forge Fathers
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides So I did the first half of my Votann Killteam (waiting for rules for rest) using the black armor...yeah I definitely might go ahead and switch to black for my Space Dwarfs XD
im very late to the party , sorry , love your take on the kronus hegemony- What would be your take on the vehicules , like the piorneers, or the sagitaur ,
Excuse me sir! I love your work, but I'm fascinated by how you did the barrel hole's for the plasma gun and the grenade launcher. How did you achieve that effect? Excellent work!
Thank you. The answer is surprisingly simple. It’s just a case of drilling a hole in the end of the guns using a small hobby drill. Like this one from GW elementgames.co.uk/wargames-and-miniatures-by-manufacturer/games-workshop/citadel-games-workshop-paints/citadel-tools-drill?d=10493
Really like your video, they are such agreable to listen to and watch. The painting is always really nice and clean. I just have one question, what's the point of the zenithal when you apply two coats of mat black? I've started to do zenithal but I honestly don't really see the point when not using speed paint. Keep the amazing work going.
Thank you. Very good question. And the answer, is as you suspect, in this case the zenithal priming serves no benefit to the final result. So why do it then? Well, I prime all my minis in large batches and usually long before I’ve decided how I’m going to paint them. By priming them all with zenithal gives me the option to go the glazes and contrast paint route should I wish without the hassle of having to set the airbrush up for a couple of minis. It also helps with picking out details for the camera and my aging eyes 😆 The reason I mention it in the video, is simply to be as clear as possible with people, so they know what I’ve done. Hope that helps and thanks a lot for checking out my channel 👍🏻
No need to be sorry for anything. It's just that when I came back in the hobby, everyone was talking about zenithal and how it was a much necessary thing to do but I don't really use speed paint or contrast so I feel like zenithal isn't really usefull. I was wondering if you felt like it was necessary when using regular base coat. On the other hand, I also watched Richard Gray who use a different style and he seems to always start from a black undercoat. Again, great content and great painting, very smooth and very clean 👌
I would say the edge highlight colours are thinned down slightly less. As it doesn’t need to settle smooth over a large surface like the base colours and it helps if it stays in one place. Both are thin enough to flow from the brush like ink from a pen though. Not sure if that really helps I will be doing a video on paint thinning though, as it seems to be people’s most asked question. Stay tuned 👍🏻
Thanks man. Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact paints but I do know it'll be the same as the face painted in this video ruclips.net/video/X_rIxmaM4FY/видео.html because it's my standard skin recipe. Hope that helps :o)
Hi, I would like to try this schema on my Hearthkyn warriors (default troups), in your opinion which color is the best for the clothes of the mini ? because gold will be too much By the way amazing job :)
thanks for watching, really glad you like the scheme. So, for the overalls of the other troops, I just kept it simple and went with Dark Reaper shaded with Nuln Oil. It's subtle enough to be different from the black armour but not so over powering to distract from the black and gold. Hope that helps
Thanks for watching, really glad to hear you're going to give it a try. If you have a look through my channel posts in the Community section you'll see I shared some pics of a Hearthkyn warrior in this scheme and the colours I used for the undersuit. YT doesnt seem to let me share it as a link here unfortunately. Hope that helps
Amazing guide, really inspired to do something very similar. For the standard warriors, what were your thoughts, still yellow and black for the troops, red weapon cases?
For the standard troops I opted for dark reaper overalls and gold knee pads to tie in with these. Kept the red weapons throughout. Look so great together. My advice though, is play around with colours on your first one to get the scheme how you like it for you. It’s good fun and always nice to have a person army that only you have 👍🏻
This is the only vottan scheme I’ve seen that I like but as they are mining dwarves etc what would you do to scuff up and dirty the model a bit? Basing wise too I guess? Thanks
Thank you To add wear and damage I would sponge a little rhinox hide onto edges which you want to look worn and then within those random brown splodges I would paint some graphite silver but leaving an outline of the brown showing. This will give the impression of chipping down to bare metal Scuff marks could be done using the dark reaper and Thunderhawk blue too Then if you were to base on a dusty planet surface you could introduce some weathering powder to dirty up the armour that way too
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately there really isn’t a GW black that matches the finish of the Scale75 black. The best you’re going to be able to do is use abbadon black and then apply a very matte varnish over it. If you are able to try the Scale75, I would highly recommend it. It’s one of my “must have” paints in my opinion
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides hello, I finally bought the same paint as you, I find your color scheme really beautiful and I'm going to do my league the same way, besides I'm looking for a complementary color to put on the fabric of the Hearthkyn warriors in addition to black and gold, if you have an idea I'm interested. I also wanted to thank you for your other painting tutorial videos which for a beginner are an incredible source of information. Good luck and thank you
Thanks, really glad you like the scheme For the undersuits I did mine like this instagram.com/p/ColOrYltGwH/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Recipe is just Base coat - Dark Reaper Wash - Nuln Oil Highlight - Dark Reaper Nice and simple but looks great
Best choice is to go with either a dark grey (dawnstone with nuln oil wash) or a muted blue (dark reaper/ thunderhawk blue with nuln oil wash) Hope that helps
Do you use varnishes to strengthen the paint against wear and tear? And if so, do you have any suggestions?, because I find most varnishes I've tried tend to "flatten" the highlights - undoing much of the hard work put into them.
This may be a really dumb question, but is Scale 75 flat black the same as Scale 75 black? They both have the same code (sc-00) but want to make sure before i put paint to model. They may have just changed the name?
I’ve just checked and YES. It seems Scale75 have decided to rename the paint to be just Black now. So, as long as your paint says SC-00 you’ll be fine 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you so much! I appreciate the response! I absolutely loved this video and it really helped me finally decide on my paint scheme. Would you by any chance have any videos or pictures of this scheme on other votann miniatures? Particually the vehicles, pioneers, or warriors?
@@LordRatvi I posted some other pics in the Community tab of the warriors to show the other colours I used for overalls, leather etc Vehicles I did as gunmetal frames, black armour panels and sparing gold accents and canopies Hope that helps
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Helps a lot! Thank you so much! Helped me figure out the cloth color, the visual is incredibly helpful. I would love to see those vehicles if you post any pictures!
Hi, I really like the change of yellow to gold color, I just have one question. Did you paint bershka warrior, where yellow color is much more, using gold color? I'm in the process of getting ready to paint and I'm wondering how the figures will look with a lot of gold. Or did you use other colors to paint bershka warrior?
I kept the gold as an accent colour throughout the whole army, rather than doing a direct swap of yellow to gold. So, for models which had yellow overalls for example, I used dark reaper shaded with nuln oil instead Here’s a pic to show how it looked instagram.com/p/ColOrYltGwH/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Very reasonable question. In this case, the zenithal is only serving to help bring out details on camera. There will be a slight colour tone change between the black primer and grey but nothing noticeable to the eye. I prime all my minis the same way as I do them in batches and I haven’t decided on how I plan to paint them yet. Doing them this way just means it allows me the option of going for glazes over zenithal or solid colours when I come to painting them (usually a few weeks after I’ve primed them) 👍🏻
A very reasonable question and the answer is, no, it’s not necessary at all. I apply the zenithal for a couple of reasons. The main one being it prime my minis long before I decide how I’m going to paint them. So by doing the zenithal it keeps my options open to glazes etc. And secondly, having the zenithal helps with picking up details on camera in the videos. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed the tutorial?
I'm planning on following your tutorial for your colour scheme, but instead of using Flat Black I want to use Abyssal Blue, Would it throw off the rest of the scheme too much or should it be ok?
So, yes. This mini has two primers. Primers are not the same as base coats though, they are only intended as something for the paint to bond to, and stop it rubbing off the mini. The reason for the two, is because I prime my minis in big batches often long before I’ve decided how I’m going to paint them. By adding the light grey zenithal prime it gives me the option to use washes and glazes to colour the mini and not just solid paint colours. Take a look at the chapter on zenithal in this video, it explains it better ruclips.net/video/mADYQQOH9a8/видео.htmlsi=UPG0JOlQDXCHKQlP In the case of this Votann scheme, there is no need for the light grey zenithal though, as I just went with solid paints. So you’re probably best to just go with a plain black primer Hope that helps 👍
How could I apply this paint scheme to the regular warriors and other units in the army? I'm going to be doing something like this but with bronze instead of gold and green plasma instead of blue
Really it’s just a case of painting any armour panels black with the blue edging. Decide which you want to pick out with the metallic (I’d suggest making the knees a common feature) and then just make the under suit a dark tone (grey or blue would work) Hope that helps
What is this?! Black armor scheme and we don’t see the scale 75 flat black to eclipse grey to graphite?! 😂 Excellent tutorial as always, super neat and another great resource to improve my edge highlighting thank you!
I really need to know how many base layers you are using to achieve that level of smoothness on black. You say "several", are we talking two layers or five? The number of layers could guide me to properly thinning my paint.
From memory this was just two (certainly no more than three) layers to achieve a solid black. Black from Scale75 has decent coverage, so easy to paint over a smooth primer. If you've never tried it, do yourself a favour and get yourself some :)
I was kind of going for a Nasa helmet vibe and suggesting the whole gold panel was one visor. In hindsight I think it would have worked better if I've filled in all the grooves and made it all smooth.
Oh haha Sorry, just my poor editing. The little red dot will have just been a pure white base coat and then a glaze of red of a thinned down contrast paint, like Blood Angels Red. But you can paint the little lights any colour you like 🙂
It can be tricky getting the balance right. Because if you’re not careful it can very quickly start to look like a grey rather than black. Give this Scale75 black a try. It’s a really forgiving paint, as it’s so matte it does a lot of the work for you and makes things much less stressful Thanks for watching though, I hope you found it useful 👍
Absolutely, you could achieve the same with a black primer for this scheme. I prime all my minis the same, usually in large batches when I’m still undecided how I’m going to want to paint them. So for me it’s easier to just add the grey zenithal in case I want to do some glazing or contrast layers. Also helps bring details out which can be harder to see on a solid black primer. Although I admit that is probably more my aging eyes 🤣
1. I Do the shades and the flat part of the mini looks horrible. 2. When I try to edge highlight. My brush just keep accidentally touch other part of the mini. 3. When I do the knobs the ink just ran off and form a circle around the knob instead of highlight the dot. 4. When trying to paint the hidden part of the mini, it is so hard to reach but it felt wrong to just left it alone .
You’re right, the zenithal has no bearing on the end result of this paint scheme. The reason this mini has been primed this way is because I prep and prime my minis in large batches, often long before I e decided how I’m going to paint them. By priming with a zenithal highlight it gives me the option to go with either glazes and washes or solid base colours or even a mix of both. It is mentioned in the video just as a matter of fact so people know how it’s been primed. The ideal for this scheme would simply be to prime black and then airbrush the whole mini with the matte black and then carry on from there. Not everyone has an airbrush though, and I do like to show people that smooth finishes can still be achieved by hand 👍🏻
Haha not a clue I figured the internet would be more than happy to correct my poor pronunciation either way. I’m beginning to think GW just hate RUclipsrs and enjoying getting us to say bonkers words
Hegemony is not pronounced homogeny. Those are two different words. The first is domination by cultural inundation. The second is a lack of diversity in arbitrary qualities.

Smooth bu-
Also I think the personal recommendations at the end really does make a difference instead of the usual here is some recommended by RUclips stuff
That matte black, though. Simply incredible. I've never thought to try Scale 75 paints before but I think I'm going to have to.
Thank you
You really should give Scale75 a try.
Maybe start with this black and see what you think. It’s a colour I think everyone should have in their paint rack.

The base is from a GW industrial style base set I found

They’re very cool and I thought tied in well with the idea of them boarding space hulks
I’ve added a link in the video description where to buy them
Those Einhyr are chunky!
Thanks for watching man
Yeah, I’m a big fan of their aesthetic too and I’m pleased with how the colour scheme worked on them. In keeping with the GW leagues but that little bit different for the better 👍🏻
Maaan what a killer tutorial, tbh one of my absolute fav to paint black armour - arguably the best I’ve seen on black armour and I’ve watched damn near all of them on yt!
Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful
I've just started painting. Loving it, it's super relaxing, close to meditation. I'm getting the same vibe from watching you carefully paint as I do when I'm doing it myself. Amazing work, the detail on the face, wow!
Thanks for watching.
Yeah! That’s exactly what painting is for me too. A way to zone out and relax.
So glad that comes across in my videos too.
I figured there’s already loads of channels which are loud, high octane entertainment, so why not have a chilled relaxed channel instead 🤛
Dude your painting is brilliant - Just started back into painting after 25 years, your videos have really helped

I learned quite a lot from this tutorial and especially on how to thin paints. I have three airbrushes but I find I am more interested in brush painting and trying to obtain a smooth finish. Thank you for this tutorial and I will be watching more.
Thanks for watching man, really glad you liked it.
In terms of paint thinning, I’ve just posted a video on exactly that topic which you may find helpful too

i have been waiting for this to drop! ive seen the pics in a few groups and has inspired me to paint my cygnar faction for warmachine in a similar fashion.
Nice one, great choice 👍🏻 this scheme should look amazing on warmachine cygnar. Please send through some pics when you get them done. Would love to see ‘em 🤘🏻
Brilliant! Now to get mine assembled. Definitely using this scheme. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you.

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides just wanted to ask again about your bases. Do you have a video on them? Thanks!!
I absolutely love this color scheme and will probably use it for my Space Marines (I already have my Votann in a different scheme). Also, this tutorial is incredibly calming and detailed, so thank you very much for the hard work!
I've been looking forward to this video since I first saw the pictures of this mini, even bought myself a einhyr champion model so I can try it out
Brilliant man, please let me know how you get on with it.
I’ve tried to keep things a simple as possible to reproduce so it can be easily used for batch painting too 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm really looking forward to trying it just waiting on my flat black to arrive

Thanks for watching, really glad you found the video useful
Great video series - watched your paint thinning video (which was great) and then saw the Votann painting video. Just finished assembling my combat patrol set so was thrilled to see it. Have ordered the paint bundle as linked in your comments and excited for it to arrive! :)
Thanks man
Really glad you’re enjoying the channel and find the guides useful 👍
This scheme is fantastic. I love the matte black. I found your video from posting your paint thinning video in a FB group and I'm shocked you don't have more views and follows. Your paint thinning video is excellent and incredibly informative. Love your channel!
Thank you, really appreciate it.
I think my channel suffers because I don’t do the whole clickbait stuff. YT really seems to like that sort of tactic.
I’ll stick to making videos my way, and then the right people (like you) will find me eventually 👍
Yes! I've been coming back daily to see this :) ! Such a fantastic paint job, very inspiring
Awesome, thanks man 🤛🏻
Please feel free to watch it hundreds of times and help boost my figures 😉
Thanks man
Scale colours are beautiful paints.
And it’s exactly the same for S75 paints too
ruclips.net/video/sBDVPoNXyVI/видео.html
So it’s good to know it’s working 🙂
Apologies about the reference to zenithal at the start of the video.
The reasons I do this are,
• to make details easier to see and therefore easier to paint (also shows them on camera easier too)
• allows me to see which parts of the mini should be highlighted and which should be in shadow
• and lastly, it gives me the option to not apply paints as solid colours but I could if I wanted apply thin glazes of colour which will tint the light and dark primer and actually give highlight and shadow in one step.
I didn’t opt for the last option in this video, but if you would like to see what I mean, I did do it in this video for the red armour

Hope that helps

Just found your channel and I love your paint jobs. You’re coats come out so smooth. I would LOVE to see a video of your thinning process. Keep up the great work. Excited to see your channel grow!
Thanks for watching man and so glad you found my channel. Great to have you onboard 🤛🏻
You’ll be pleased to hear I am actually planning a paint thinning video, as it has become my most asked question now.
Insane tuto once again the end result is really impresive !! well done
Thank you 🙏🏻
Please share with everyone you know 😉
Fantastic video and paint job as always. I was wondering if you'd consider doing a short video focused around how you thin your paints and apply base coats, your models always have this fantastically smooth finish.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Actually you may just be a bit of a psyker and have read my mind.
I am planning exactly that, as it’s by far my most asked question
Just trying to work out the best way to visualise it

All jokes aside, I thought of doing this same paint scheme on an imperial AT-ST (Star wars). Bandai/Namco makes some really great Star Wars models and after not doing a model since the 90’s it was a blast to do!
Thanks for the video!

I’ll have a think and see how I can change my video template
Thanks for supporting the channel 👍🏻
Found you through Reddit and this is exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for! If you don’t mind, what colors would you use for the cloth on the warriors and leather coats?
Excellent, the final result is excellent, perhaps I would like to see a more detail on the plasma, not completely convinced with just a contrast wash. Keep up the good work 🙌🏻
Could you do World Eaters Berserker at all? I'd love to see your Theory and Method
I can certainly put them on the list 👍🏻
Best black i've seen
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
I like it, not bad, I just miss a bit of gradient in those big armour plates... The edging is beauiful, amazing work. I am not sure if with a dry brush making some middle-tone gradients from the edges could have help...? Just wondering, an artist here getting into the minuature business. Thank you.
Is it weird that I like all the edge highlighting? It feels a lot less ambiguous (for lack of a better word) than other highlighting techniques, which has always driven me batty.
No, not at all. I think it’s perfectly normal 🙂
Edge highlighting gives you total control over the end result compared to processes like drybrushing or contrast paints say.
I actually find it relaxing and a great way to zone out too.
great job and great tutorial. thank you!

What a result... gorgeous! I was wondering if you had a video demonstrating your handle setup? Do you use a hand drill + wire to mount minis off base? Or is it just blutack on a spike?

As great as gold pants would look, I opted for dark reaper so as to be more subtle
I love this scheme, i am about to start an amry. Gonna follow the premis of this video for sure. Do you think you could swap a purple for the gold and it would still work with the red weapon?
Also, do you have any suggestions for which purples i should use,. looking for a more matt finish?

Keep doing your thing though. 😁🍻
Think of it as NASA stuff but with black instead of white
Hope that helps.

love this scheme! im shamlesley going to try steal it! how would you recommend doing standard infantry clothing?
Thanks, really glad you like it 👍🏻
For the overalls of the infantry I went for for dark reaper.
Hope that helps
I will try and paint up an infantry mini for this scheme as it does seem to be a coke question
Love the Flat Black!, and the gold just makes it pop so well. One question I do have is how would you take that colour scheme to the other Votann models? Replacing the yellow to gold but on the other models where the yellow is used on fabrics(pants, shirts).

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides great idea, thanks, I am going to shamelessly trying to copy this paintscheme, I feel the appeal in the back of my brain telling me "this is the path to pick"

This video has made me want to change my paint scheme. Do you have any plans to do tutorials on the vehicles in this fashion?

NGL... I think I might switch to this scheme for my Space Dwarfs. I'd started some with a more stone grey (Mantic Forge Fathers)...but really like the black/gold look (was honestly a scheme I debated on when I started them). Will probably paint my killteam in this color and see how I like it.
Thanks for watching man
Yeah, I was forever changing my mind which way I wanted to go with these
In the end, the black and gold just felt space biker gang like and that's how I remember them from before. Plus, black and gold is such a classic combo, it's hard to go wrong
Let me know how the Killteam goes and whether you're persuaded to switch from your exisiting Mantic Forge Fathers

Excuse me sir! I love your work, but I'm fascinated by how you did the barrel hole's for the plasma gun and the grenade launcher. How did you achieve that effect? Excellent work!

The answer is surprisingly simple.
It’s just a case of drilling a hole in the end of the guns using a small hobby drill.

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Amazing! You wouldn't happen to know what size you used?
It also helps with picking out details for the camera and my aging eyes 😆
The reason I mention it in the video, is simply to be as clear as possible with people, so they know what I’ve done.
Hope that helps and thanks a lot for checking out my channel 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thanks for the detailed answer!
No problem.
Sorry for the confusion it may have caused 👍🏻
No need to be sorry for anything.
It's just that when I came back in the hobby, everyone was talking about zenithal and how it was a much necessary thing to do but I don't really use speed paint or contrast so I feel like zenithal isn't really usefull. I was wondering if you felt like it was necessary when using regular base coat.
On the other hand, I also watched Richard Gray who use a different style and he seems to always start from a black undercoat.
Again, great content and great painting, very smooth and very clean 👌
When you apply an edge highlight would you say you thin the paint down more or less than compared to the base coat consistency?
I would say the edge highlight colours are thinned down slightly less. As it doesn’t need to settle smooth over a large surface like the base colours and it helps if it stays in one place.
Both are thin enough to flow from the brush like ink from a pen though.
Not sure if that really helps
I will be doing a video on paint thinning though, as it seems to be people’s most asked question.
Stay tuned 👍🏻

Hi, I would like to try this schema on my Hearthkyn warriors (default troups), in your opinion which color is the best for the clothes of the mini ? because gold will be too much
By the way amazing job :)
thanks for watching, really glad you like the scheme.
So, for the overalls of the other troops, I just kept it simple and went with Dark Reaper shaded with Nuln Oil. It's subtle enough to be different from the black armour but not so over powering to distract from the black and gold.
Hope that helps

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thanks just found it =)
What color did you do for the cloth/leather on the other models in the faction?
Amazing guide, really inspired to do something very similar. For the standard warriors, what were your thoughts, still yellow and black for the troops, red weapon cases?
For the standard troops I opted for dark reaper overalls and gold knee pads to tie in with these.
Kept the red weapons throughout.
Look so great together.
My advice though, is play around with colours on your first one to get the scheme how you like it for you. It’s good fun and always nice to have a person army that only you have 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Anywhere to see more pics of your Votann would be massively appreciated!
This is the only vottan scheme I’ve seen that I like but as they are mining dwarves etc what would you do to scuff up and dirty the model a bit? Basing wise too I guess? Thanks
Thank you
To add wear and damage I would sponge a little rhinox hide onto edges which you want to look worn and then within those random brown splodges I would paint some graphite silver but leaving an outline of the brown showing.
This will give the impression of chipping down to bare metal
Scuff marks could be done using the dark reaper and Thunderhawk blue too
Then if you were to base on a dusty planet surface you could introduce some weathering powder to dirty up the armour that way too

Hello, thank you very much for this vidéo !
Do you know a Citadel color to try to get the same black as you? Abbadon black?
thank you for your help
Good luck and thank you
Thanks, really glad you like the scheme
For the undersuits I did mine like this
instagram.com/p/ColOrYltGwH/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Recipe is just
Base coat - Dark Reaper
Wash - Nuln Oil
Highlight - Dark Reaper
Nice and simple but looks great
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thank you very much 😁😁😁
@@kawada94600 no problem
Is the zenithal needed if I'm locking all the colors in with base colors instead of contrast/washes?
No
For this recipe the zenithal is not required.
Question if i transfer the scheme to other space dwarfs what colour would you use for there undersuits .
A lighter gray perhaps?
Best choice is to go with either a dark grey (dawnstone with nuln oil wash) or a muted blue (dark reaper/ thunderhawk blue with nuln oil wash)
Hope that helps
Do you use varnishes to strengthen the paint against wear and tear? And if so, do you have any suggestions?, because I find most varnishes I've tried tend to "flatten" the highlights - undoing much of the hard work put into them.
I do, yes.
I used to use Testors Dullcote but it got really hard to get hold of.
So I switched to using a light coating of this

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thanks for the link!
@@LordRatvi I posted some other pics in the Community tab of the warriors to show the other colours I used for overalls, leather etc
Vehicles I did as gunmetal frames, black armour panels and sparing gold accents and canopies
Hope that helps
So, for models which had yellow overalls for example, I used dark reaper shaded with nuln oil instead
Here’s a pic to show how it looked
instagram.com/p/ColOrYltGwH/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
what water/paint ratio you used for retributor armour?
It’s not so much a ratio as a movement level.
Give this a watch and it will explain what I mean
ruclips.net/video/sBDVPoNXyVI/видео.html
What was the point of the zenithal highlight if you are going to hard cover it?
Very reasonable question.
In this case, the zenithal is only serving to help bring out details on camera. There will be a slight colour tone change between the black primer and grey but nothing noticeable to the eye.
I prime all my minis the same way as I do them in batches and I haven’t decided on how I plan to paint them yet.
Doing them this way just means it allows me the option of going for glazes over zenithal or solid colours when I come to painting them (usually a few weeks after I’ve primed them) 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides That makes sense. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!
Hi can I ask a question please .
What color will you used instead the grey/white from a Land Fortress ?
I just went with a gunmetal chassis and black body panels with gold accents
How would you recommend how to paint the clothbits on the other troops when following this scheme
I opted for this
instagram.com/p/ColOrYltGwH/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
It’s base - dark reaper. Shade - nuln oil, highlight dark reaper
So, nice and easy
Hegemony - dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.
Homogeneity - state of being all the same or all of the same kind
Cheers mate
I knew I’d get it wrong 🤣
it is really necessary to apply cenital when you are painting that black ?
You’d need to adjust the highlights for appropriate tones but the rest of the scheme should work fine with blue rather than black, yeah
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides cheers!! taking a trip over to Stockport for family and gonna pop into Element Games to get the paints that I need
Could you dry brush the knees
So uve painted it with 2 base coats ??? Black then grey
Take a look at the chapter on zenithal in this video, it explains it better
ruclips.net/video/mADYQQOH9a8/видео.htmlsi=UPG0JOlQDXCHKQlP
In the case of this Votann scheme, there is no need for the light grey zenithal though, as I just went with solid paints. So you’re probably best to just go with a plain black primer
Hope that helps 👍
How could I apply this paint scheme to the regular warriors and other units in the army? I'm going to be doing something like this but with bronze instead of gold and green plasma instead of blue
Really it’s just a case of painting any armour panels black with the blue edging. Decide which you want to pick out with the metallic (I’d suggest making the knees a common feature) and then just make the under suit a dark tone (grey or blue would work)
Hope that helps
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides ah yes so just accent paint the bronze! Perfect, thanks for the quick reply ☺️
What is this?! Black armor scheme and we don’t see the scale 75 flat black to eclipse grey to graphite?! 😂
Excellent tutorial as always, super neat and another great resource to improve my edge highlighting thank you!
Haha nope
Decided to show a different option for those highlights. The cold tones contrast beautifully against the warm gold and red
Could not agree more, just very fond of your monochromatic scheme on the raven guard… finally getting the hang of it a bit. Excellent video as always
Thanks man
I still really like the Raven Guard recipe too.
Having the grey edges really suits the sneaky bois 👍🏻
I really need to know how many base layers you are using to achieve that level of smoothness on black.
You say "several", are we talking two layers or five?
The number of layers could guide me to properly thinning my paint.
From memory this was just two (certainly no more than three) layers to achieve a solid black. Black from Scale75 has decent coverage, so easy to paint over a smooth primer. If you've never tried it, do yourself a favour and get yourself some :)
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Cheers, I'll give it a shot
cool
its definitely worth thinning to get such a lovely smooth finish
Nice
Thank you
Black legion contrast works?
Not if you want the same looking black, no
So is there a reason you didn't do the visor on the helmet?
I was kind of going for a Nasa helmet vibe and suggesting the whole gold panel was one visor.
In hindsight I think it would have worked better if I've filled in all the grooves and made it all smooth.
What did you do to paint that little red dot on his chest? One second its not painted and then next it just magically was haha.
Oh haha
Sorry, just my poor editing.
The little red dot will have just been a pure white base coat and then a glaze of red of a thinned down contrast paint, like Blood Angels Red.
But you can paint the little lights any colour you like 🙂
Black is a tough color for me
It can be tricky getting the balance right.
Because if you’re not careful it can very quickly start to look like a grey rather than black.
Give this Scale75 black a try. It’s a really forgiving paint, as it’s so matte it does a lot of the work for you and makes things much less stressful
Thanks for watching though, I hope you found it useful 👍
How is he holding the minatures with?
I just use a piece of wire in a cork
Details here

Starting with a black primer would seem to make more sense
Absolutely, you could achieve the same with a black primer for this scheme.
I prime all my minis the same, usually in large batches when I’m still undecided how I’m going to want to paint them. So for me it’s easier to just add the grey zenithal in case I want to do some glazing or contrast layers.
Also helps bring details out which can be harder to see on a solid black primer. Although I admit that is probably more my aging eyes 🤣
This is so hard… I tried to do all the details but just keep fail miserably.
What is it you’re struggling with exactly?
Perhaps I can help 🙂
I'll never understand zenithal undercoats when it has literally no impact on a paint job like this.
I wanna see what a normal squat looks like
I can do that, check this out

No bad thing though, I love StarCraft
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Did not meant to be bad though, your creations are always interesting to watch.
Hegemony is not pronounced homogeny. Those are two different words. The first is domination by cultural inundation. The second is a lack of diversity in arbitrary qualities.
Yes. It was a slip of the tongue 🤣
