I think the secret to Big Wreck is: The more you know, the more there is to appreciate. The songwriting, the musicianship, the tone, the performance. All, deep as any ocean.
One can't praise this band and the mix enough. But besides that. This must be one of the most meaningful endorsements of a brand ever. Suhr must be proud of this. What a tone-feast!
You hit the nail right on the head! I think you probably summed it up better than anyone. Ian Thornley has the combination of guitar chops of Richie Kotzen and the vocals of Chris Cornell-two Rock gods in their own right. With the incredible ability of writing some purely genius songs both musically and lyrically.
Never get tired of listening to these Suhr recordings. Perfection. Looking forward to seeing Big Wreck in town March 30th. Although, it will be weird seeing them in a sit-down venue. Guess we'll just have to encourage everyone to stand
This dude is one of the best musicians of all time, not just Canadian (though we keep him), but literally of all time, the song writing, the singing, the guitar playing, the frontmanship, fuck me, Ian is a god in all respects but the divine.
I'm also a "Chris Cornell traveller". Ian is of course not Cornell, but he is the closest there is. I have only scratched the surface of Big Wreck's records. It's like a goldmine.
@@jubilantyogurt while I’ve made this comparison before as well, I don’t think it’s fair to Ian. He stands on his own and I think is actually a technically stronger vocalist and obviously a killer guitarist.
Everyone keeps mentioning Chris Cornell vocally - love his stuff- but Ian Thornley has his own thing going on and....a fantastic guitarist on top of that=amazing talent. World class for sure. Fantastic band too.
I had the opportunity to speak to Big Wreck's original drummer, Forest, a few years ago. He told me, flat out, they did take inspiration directly from Soundgarden, but then wrapped all of their blues training from Berkeley into it and we ended up with this sound ✊🏻🤙🏻❤️
Don't be stupid. Of course, in general everything you said is true. But being surprised by "everyone" (meaning not everyone literally but most people) Comparing his voice to Chris Cornell is.....not surprising at the least, to say the least. You're probably, like me, a fan of both Soundgarden and Big wreck, and you're conflicted because you know that Ian sounds almost exactly like Chris Cornell, even though the bands as a whole are significantly different, the voices are pretty spot on to being the same thing. And you don't wanna admit that because as a fact it's not as cool and unique as one would imagine in an idealistic paradisiacal world. But the truth will set you free. No more comforting lies for you mister.
In the past few months I've come across fabulous Canadian musicians and bands on this site which I have forever thought were great but didn't get the recognition they so richly deserve. All of them, so far have been from my city or boroughs within a few minutes drive. Of all the cities in Canada, am I lucky to have emigrated to Toronto from Jamaica as a little boy. Thornley is yet another one. Reminds me of Chris Cornell but has incredible guitar skills. Have loved this song since day 1. So tastey!!! The music. The singing. The EVERTHING!!!
Thanks for the invite. Not really into Facebook and all those sites. Only ever created an account there because of being constantly bugged to by friends years ago. LOL. Would closer my account but have family all over the world and is they'd freak if I shut it down. Thanks again though....
Can’t believe I’m only discovering this in 2020?!? He sounds eerily like Chris Cornell, maybe even with better control - but maybe fewer hooks? Monster vocals and guitar skills!!!
I suppose I can't judge but damn, those folks didn't give the applause we gave this band in our tiny little venue in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. The local college had a bar called the Outback and I was fortunate enough to see this band. However, I haven't been fortunate enough to see them since. Big Wreck and Thornley are in my top five of all time. That's ok and I'm alright.
Every time i watch this performance Im always blown away by 2 things, the KILLER performance and the total lack of response from the stiffs that were fortunate enough to witness an effort that was Imho historical and respond so casually and maybe just applauded to be polite......the contrast blows me away...what a shame...and good for the guys to spill their guts out the entire night despite the total lack of enthusiasm
Such a talent. Canada's Chris Cornell and guitar skills akin to John Mayer, there's noone like Ian anywhere else on earth. This is my favourite song written by him.
Saw these guys at Fanshawe College in London ON...best show ever!! I stood 2' from him the whole time...scored one of his guitar pics and his play list he had taped to the stage...best day ever
I've seen Ian playing slide guitar before but, never like this. A true genious. I saw them touring on this album exactly 20yrs ago this year in Ottawa. It sure doesn't feel that long, weird how time can feel so destorted.
I had the absolute eye opening to win tickets to have dinner through a friend- via limo bus to a great steak house and back to the concert in Windsor in 2009. We got to meet Ian and the band as we ate AND WHAT A SHOW! I went to 2 more in the next cpl of years after. If you have never seen big wreck or IAN ? I URGE YOU TOO!
A quick count of hands here....who all thought it was Chris Cornell singing this song when it hit the radio waves? I'm SO guilty....dude's got an amazing vocal range!🎤🎸🤪
+r3s3t063 I think it's best that he doesn't. I saw him an outdoor music festival (Rocklahoma) and he played the main stage. We were probably about 50 meters away from the stage and the sound just didn't carry well at an outdoor venue, but there seemed to be a lot of sound issues that weekend with many artists. I'd rather see him in a smaller venue. Still a fantastic first show, but I know I could have had an even better experience.
+inmynothingyoumeanteverythingtome Sounds like that was an issue with the production at the festival. Can't blame the band for that. I saw them play at an outdoor festival called Edgefest in Saskatoon, SK back in the late 90's. It was one of the most epic concert experiences of my life. I'll never forget it.
NimblyBimbly It definitely was. I believe that was the same year Deftones played and Chino's mic cut out for damn near an entire song. One year Bush played and entire left side speakers quit working for the first bit of their opening song. That festival seems to be plagued with sound issues randomly. I'd just rather see him play in a venue that had more control over those sorts of things.
He is an incredible musician with heart and passion...I love when people have the ability to share their personal stories. Now this is living. R.I.P. Chris. You are always here in spirit and we have always had the Canadian version. But...he still not known throughout the world. Fame is a very delusional thing at times. We are ALL human with feelings. Please Always be kind. Everyone in this world has their own story. Ian just knows how to tell it his through his music. Absolutely love Big Wreck (always have and will) R.I.P BRIAN. you were my fave...
First time I heard this song I had no idea it was Big Wreck. I was at a bar in Vegas and I actually thought at first it was Chris Cornell tossing out a new single. To this day I've thought Ian would make a worthy fill in for Soundgarden now that Chris is sadly gone.
Nice! This live version of Albatross is coming out on the limited edition vinyl and cd anniversary release of the Albatross album! Along with some other alternate recordings. 2 album set. 🎶🎸🎶
Big Wreck, and Ian are national treasures that's for sure! One of the few bands I know that has as good a live sound as on recording; incredible! This band is a HUGE reason why I began playing the guitar and music in general. Thank you to Big Wreck and Ian for years of inspiration and for sharing your craft with us.
I've stopped listening to many of my favorite songs for a long time but I couldn't stop listening to this beautiful track somehow! It offers so much within one single package.. Respect 🙏🙏🙏

I am so deep hahaha
Yeah. F yeah actually
I think the more you know, the easiest it becomes
F yea man. All of the above. His voice is legendary too.
Yaaaaaa
Christ whoever mixed this is a fuckin' genius.
No need to reference any other artist...this is Ian Thornley and Big Wreck, say no more
One can't praise this band and the mix enough. But besides that. This must be one of the most meaningful endorsements of a brand ever. Suhr must be proud of this. What a tone-feast!
Pete Thorn introduced John Suhr to Ian. John has written in the comments before too, big fan.
This band is a national Canadian treasure! Ian Thornley is a guitar and vocal god!
His voice is out of this world. Tasty melody lines. He, Ritchie Kotzen, and Chris Cornell, amazing talents.

Yuuuupppp
Master vocalist and master guitarist in one. A rare breed.
Cornell meets a shredder...wtf
Went to see them with my son last night at abbotsford with Monster Truck and Brkn love. Awesome! Total Chris Cornell chills down the spine!
Velvet Revolver I believe.
I think he was offered a spot w VR..?
@@kuntymckunterson
Hee was offered the lead vocalist spot in Velvet Revolver; not Audioslave.
Thornley sounds better here than on the album. damn.

I travelled from Oz last year to see that tour. Saw them at Brampton and st Catherine’s. Best trip of my life.
What is it about so many Canadian artists being so underrated? Thornley/Big Wreck. The Hip. Triumph. Trooper. Our Lady Peace. Nickelb, oh, wait . . .
This joke is funnier now that Big Wreck has done a collab with Chad Kroeger
Because we are considered “rip offs” of our American counterparts
You forgot the best canadian thrash metal band Annihilator
Also Devin Townsend. Easily one of greatest Canadian musicians.
The Tea Party….
very underrated song and band wtf? this is sooo good!
100%!!!

The closest we´ll come to Cornell. I am dying too Ian live. Pure greatness.

Brennan Osinski It's true
