"If people are making fun of ya, it doesn't really matter. You gotta get your hours in and do what you need to do." Came for the driving lessons, stayed for the life lessons.
I don't usually comment on videos, but I just wanted to say that you guys are doing a great job on the channel. You, Wyatt, are very excellent at presenting the topics and I'm sure that the same could be said about all the instructors in the rally school (wish I could go some day, but it's half way around the world for me). Always loved rally driving and a channel like this is something unique - keep it up!
Senna started the trend of the stitching on the outside by wearing his gloves inside out. Having tried the seams on the outside recently I don’t think I can ever go back to inner seams
He says in the video they don't require or really use driving gloves much at their rally school. Also it's easier to see what he's explaining without having a full suit covering his arms and a helmet covering his face.
Good observation that they use thick gloves in drag racing. Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers actually wear two pairs of gloves. A thinner pair similar to Nomex underwear and a very thick pair over them
Also, I highly recommend buying _in person,_ where you can put them on. Sizing charts are for crap. Fit is very important. And yes, good ones will not be cheap. [*] Once you're used to (competition) driving with gloves, it'll feel wrong without them. (I club rallyx with my driving gloves.) [*] Yes there are SFI/FIA rated gloves for ~40$. They don't last long. They don't wear well. And the fine print... they're only rated for 3-5s of fire protection.
Simpson has a few retail spots across the country. And most tracks have a "pro shop". (VIR has TMI. AMP has Discovery Parts. Road Atlanta has one, too, but it's always been closed when I was there. My current gloves came from Sebring.) Also, almost any large motorsport event will have a trailer or two of equipment vendors.
jfbeam they don’t rate gloves that way. It’s temperature for a period of time. A fire that’s 100 degrees won’t burn through the gloves nearly as fast as 1000 degrees.
They make driving so much more comfortable, and yes they do put you in a more driving mode. Like a thicker steering wheel, they just feel more comfortable.
I wear some cheap 5 dollar gloves off ebay, waterproof and work good as a daily! Driving 5 to 7k miles a month is tiring or 100k+ miles a year for work..good thing I have a Honda 8th gen. Also installed a Suede with leathet st.wheel with contrast stitching cost was 55 dollars off ebay too for more comfort and grip..now I need suspension system to smooth out the ride or feel less road bumbs and what not. Never have had problems with my gloves they do make a difference at the end of the day though.
Thats the main point at the end. The gloves kinda "hook/latch" onto the wheel so your fingers are more relaxed and squeezing less which is less fatiguing over time. You don't have to squeeze your hands to control it, it auto latches on and you kinda just pull on the wheel with a semi relaxed grip to manipulate which allows for finer and faster dynamic movements and more relaxed and precise manipulation. If you have to squeeze with your hands, your arms become more clunky and can change directionally less smoothly. Great topic.
Not so much rally related, but if you're doing track days or HPDEs, having brightly colored gloves are good for signaling point bys and alerting corner workers. I have a pair of florescent yellow Alpinestars that not only feel great and provide protection, but are also a good communication aid to others when on track.
That's a solid point! In rally, when a car goes off, it's up to the driver and co-driver to get out and signal to other cars that they're OK (or not). This is often at night, around blind corners, etc. High-vis gloves would be a really smart move.
I love Gloves in the Winter I wear Thinsulate Knitted Gloves original ones without the bulk and they are so warm and comfortable and they grip the steering wheel absolutely perfect
I do a lot of Sim Racing, and I wear gloves and boots. The gloves serve two functions, one being grip the other is protecting the wheel, Alcantara and sweat don't mix well, and I use the same aftermarket rims as any "IRL" racing/rally vehicle would.
Wow, great to see another video on racing topics. Please follow it up geeking out on other driver equipment and possibly followed by things like intercom and your take on what makes sense and what’s overkill for amateurs. Thx!
I started daily driving with gloves a few months ago and not it feels weird not driving with them. - My hands are nice and warm in the winter (before the heater kicks in) but I can hold the wheel just fine during the summer (instead of having to hold a scorching hot wheel). - I don't get distraced by the little "oddities" on different wheels (like different materials, wear etc.) since I don't feel them. - I can't use a touchscreen with them (so literally can't get distracted by my phone in the car).
You ever wore racing gloves and tried to turn pages on a notebook while holding it in the air? Its about damn near possible, if the co-driver had to wear gloves their chances of crashing due to wrong pace notes (or no pace notes at all) goes up by a whole lot. Overall safer to have co driver not wear gloves for the sake of both driver and them self
What is a co-driver? The fastest race car drivers are 1 car, 1 driver. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of flack over this. But it don’t matter. I’m still right.
I could listen to Wyatt talk about anything, he's an amazing presenter. Definitely deserving a more "prestigious" gig, but I'm not complaining cause it means we get these videos
nice topic! thanks for another great video many points that havent cross my mind and makes so much sense now. perhaps next video can talk about driving suit or something
I prefer with gloves. Also they also have the side benefit (I did skip a bit sorry) that they are great if you have to get out and change a tyre (no cuts or dirt on hands) and they still grip well.
I use long-finger cycling gloves (thin leather on the palm, mesh top) for daily driving in summer and similar, but with insulated top in colder seasons. Started wearing these when I had a stock ultra-slippery plastic wheel on my Golf mk6. Then I installed a grippy R-line wheel, but the glove habit still persists.
@@Conorsev those are the schroth harness. They are actually meant to be used with stock seats. Those aren't some ricer hard parking harnesses that need a harness bar.
Been using Sparco Land RG3.1 for about two years now, great glove, certified, tactile, about medium thickness and affordable. Edit: They're great on leather/alcantara steering wheels as well, get some heat into them and they almost start to stick, so definitely agree with less grip force comment - as it will reduce driving fatigue.
always thought these gloves had a lot of grip, get sweaty palms around here causing a lot of slip and literally having my hand slide off the shifter occasionally so this video was super interesting for this!
As an otr truck driver, I wear gloves from time to time because my hands sweat from holding the steering wheel for so long. I also wear fingerless gloves though
Being a motorcycle track rider where gloves are made of leather and have metal protection I find car driving gloves to be super comfortable and to have a lot of feel!
Awesome video and great info. I would love it if you cover shoes in the future. I find it really hard to get real pedal feel with many I've tried but would also like to know what else makes a good investment.
Old cars without power steering were pretty tough to drive long distances, especially fast and/or on bumpy roads. Leather gloves gave you a little more grip and comfort.
Ivan Quaglia bear in mind in those days steering wheels were made out of wood, they were pretty comfortable but very slippery so the leather gloves had some threads on the palms. I own a pair and love to use them in longer distances.

but how am i gonna use my phone with those gloves on ? :P always wanted some driving gloves every since i got my car license but 3 years later finally got some a* but for the bike
For simulation purposes, I’ve found that Fox makes really nice breathable & grippy gloves for enduro gran turismo races. Ended up getting a fingerless pair, they are perfect. I tried using my Alpines on my sim wheel and it felt horrible lol especially when you have to hit any of the tiny buttons.
Logan nailed it, it's so you always know where straight is. The only thing to be careful of is that in a normal car, there are 3 times where the white tape will be at 12 o'clock... Full turn left, center, and full turn right.
His voice would be very hard to hear if he was a wearing a helmet , the jump cuts to him going full throttle I’m almost certain he has a helmet on . In the talking sections he just cruising along
Kinda lost the fire protection seeing you're wear a short sleeve t shirt and no hood. I think this is a ricer thing to do on the street like people that have drift cars. I'm sure they have a place while on the race track
Mr Rongld Bringer I disagree with the rice part. I have a fwd car and use driving gloves. They are nice when its cold and when it’s warm they don’t make the steering wheel sweaty.

I use a pair of fingerless leather gloves when driving long distances and now that I think those are made to stay flat as Wyatt explained

Oh man my driving gloves and shoes(maybe that could be the next topic?) are one of the best purchases I’ve done
In cars its fire. In karting there is no seatbelts so you can get out. Then it's only for abrasion.
The key fob Velcro'd to the steering column is awesome!
I’ve been driving for a year and use driving gloves daily. I think they are motorcross but they really help with a person with sweaty palms!

I wear cheap mechanix wear Sparco gloves from Amazon for daily driving because my hands get very sweaty (from my overall anxiety) 🤷🏻♂️
I like the key velcro'd to the steering column.
Wyatt you are an awesome dude never forget
The co-driver doesn't wear gloves that I have seen since they have to turn pages and whatnot. How does that make it past the insurance adjusters?
Not sure but as someone who has done a decent amount of co driving I can say doing it with gloves would be borderline impossible.
You ever wore racing gloves and tried to turn pages on a notebook while holding it in the air? Its about damn near possible, if the co-driver had to wear gloves their chances of crashing due to wrong pace notes (or no pace notes at all) goes up by a whole lot. where do you shop for those??
What about street leather gloves for driving the ones with holes on the knuckles...

the classic leather gloves were used for more grip only?

this video was really well explained
What brand are those gloves in the video? I'm looking to get some for track days in the future

Its common sense really. Nice video man 👍
