    Lots of great info, thanks man. I'm not building on this scale yet. I'm building a mini aquaponics pond out of storage containers in a old clawfoot bathtub. Guppies instead of tilapia for this scale. It never hurts to learn to grow food and maintain a balanced mini ecosystem. Great teaching tool to educate my daughter on how delicate the environment is. I love your tilapia, they are beautiful (and delicious) fish.

    In addition to test kits, can you also give some advice where to find safe nutrients. I have a hard time finding and or trusting the companies I find online. Thx!!!

    I'm starting with a DIY indoor system converting a "mudroom" in my house to an aquaponics room. I'll have it filled with shelves up to the ceiling with 3 tiers of grow beds. I'm using the shelves to practice all the basics while starting out with all food grade Polyethylene pipes and trays. The trays I found on webstaurant.com and are going to be connected in series. I'm doing my first shelf using media beds of black lava rock. My second will take what I've learned and try DWC for bigger plants using 5 gallon food grade buckets or large food grade totes. Once I've learned enough to make a large profitable system, I'm going to build a 10x20 shed for a more commercial setup. In that, I'll use DWC and purchase a bead filter. That will save me a lot of time with ease of use, and be more profitable in the long run. I'm building everything indoors because I live up North where there are some pretty bad winters. It's easier harder to get a building permit for a green house where I live than it is for a shed. Cozy indoor systems cost more, but will last longer and enable me to do it year round. If the shed project works, I can have a larger structure built, but I'll need building permits for that. I'll send a video once my grow room is finished.

    Anyone know if those AST filters need to be pressurized or will they work on gravity?

    I am just curious, do you make money in your aquaponic system setup? can you break down initial investment vs how much you made so far and possibly ROI on equipment.

    Yoooo shalom Ahki.... question, can you please do a tour of the aquarium and NFT system you have setup in this video? I’ve been searching your channel and can’t find where you built this system. I have a small space to start my aquaponics journey as a high class grower and I’m thinking a similar NFT system would work for my situation.. Tudah rabbah Ahk, Shalom

    Maybe I missed this but what about IBCs? I know I have seen before you said round tanks are easier to keep clean and I grant that. You are saying aquariums here however and they are just as difficult as IBCs to clean.

    I notice you and many others use tanks, however what are your thoughts on creating a man made pond and doing aquaponics from that? I am wondering if providing a natural environment would be better than a tank for the fish?

    • @the360project8
      @the360project8 6 лет назад

      Helen, you can use a pond but use a poly lining. thoug your system the fish tank will be the lowest point of the system.

    Bead filtration is about 6 times more expensive for essentially what you might consider the hundred percent Mark whereas the make it yourself is like a fraction of that and works at about 80%. It's kind of like AMD vs. Intel yeah Intel has better cores but you're paying about 50% less for AMD for 80% of the work so it's actually better worth it in the long run to make your own filter instead of using those bead filters those bead filter started off for koi ponds quite some time ago there's no reason for them to still be this expensive

    So $2,600 for NFT, $5,000+ for the fishtanks and DWC, probably another $2500 for a fancy filter all to do the same thing I do with a few scrap IBCs, two used garbage cans, a few hundred feet of PVC that was saved from the trash, some old torn up shade cloth, and a couple of $30 dollar pumps. While I respect his knowledge of aquaponics his notion of "high class" just seem to be people with more money then sense. I doubt that there is anything that a high dollar system can do that I cannot duplicate in a system made of 95% scrap, from precise solids handling, to crystal clear system water, to complete ammonia oxidation, to controlling denitrification you do not need shiny new stuff so long as you are willing to get your hands a little dirty from time to time and actually know how this stuff works. To be fair if I had professionally designed filters and fish tanks it would save me a few minutes work as I do clean them out by hand, which would be nice, just not $10,000 worth of nice IMHO.

    Dam so your telling me I gotta spend thousands and thousands of dollars to grow some plants and fish? Shoot I’ll just till up the yard and throw down some manure sprinkle in some seeds and get out on the lake to catch my fish the old fashioned way. Save myself a lot of time and money plus it’s fun to go fishing.

    I definitely follow your videos you post everything you do and you're way above knowledgeable however the only thing that I think that I disagree with you on and you know far more about aquaponics than I do but when you demean DIY I mean it's kind of like puts a bad taste in my mouth because that's where you came from that's where you started so I'm I'm just wondering if there isn't some reason for that like some sponsorship or some getting some freebies on the side and I'm not judging I'm just saying you got to start somewhere so it would be better in my opinion to start as a DIY especially for those people that have a very tight budget I mean come on?

    • @russiannpcbot6408
      @russiannpcbot6408 5 лет назад

      DIY isn't cost effective when you're going with a bigger system. For small hobby/feeding your family, DIY works. For mass production of food, it's more costly in the long run. Failures are high cost risks you take with DIY. You have fewer of those risks, and have more food safe products, when you go with commercially built products. I wouldn't buy a full commercial system, but I would buy commercial tanks and filters. An HDPE round tank will last for a decade or two, be easier to get certified as part of an organic system, and be easier to keep clean than an IBC. The time savings of commercial components are going to enable you to run more tanks and beds. That increases profitability.
