    Me and my friends were way ahead of our time back in the early 70's. We jumped horse fences in a ring, and judged each other in different "classes," as we galloped, cantered, halted, backed and trotted, etc., in the dirt. And no Lycra and sneakers, but in jeans and work boots. Grass roots for sure.

      @@jetscho4905 Hate is the buzz word of the day and for me, is the quickest identifier of who I find irrelevant. If you disagree with someone, you hate. If you make a joke, you hate. Whenever I hear someone say that another person "hates" for not supporting/agreeing/placating... they are dev/null to me. In this instance, no it isn't sad, it's funny. Humor, even mocking, is supposed to be funny. Take it as a joke, laugh, and move on!

    No one can deny these people are fit AF. I was def a horse girl and really enjoyed cantering around... never had a hobby horse, but I understand FULLY that riding an actual horse is not possible for so many people. Can we respect their confidence in doing something they enjoy?

      Well. Have you kids? If not, ask your niece, nephew or a friend's child to come with you. Have two horses and play. Everybody just looks how nice you are because you have great time and fun with your niece/nephew . 😆 (No need to tell that it is she/he who is babysitting you.) If you have no horses, they are easy to make. Google. Two big socks, two sticks and some imagenation and craftwork.

    As a hobby-horse user myself, I can agree that it is kind of strange. Just remember that it's a hobby for people that don't have a real horse so they use a fake one, as long as you only treat it as a hobby and not a very serious thing, you can gallop through imaginary fields with no judgement!

    I remember back in grade school, there was a girl who always galloped everywhere and held her hands up as if holding reins. Everybody thought she was weird, but in 7th grade, her parents actually bought her a horse! I thought, darn!, I might have tried that, too, if I had gotten a real horse out of it!

    The only thing I have to criticize is that, as far as I understand, there's no dress code in competitions. And it would be nice to see all the riders "matching"....like in a real horseriding competition. Could be like color dressing code, and each rider cna pick its style. Just a consideration....it would make things looks more "official"....but I like this sport, it seems like bringing joy to those who play it, and this is exactly the ultimate goal of a sport! bringing Joy!

      Yeah! As a hobby horser myself, it would be nice to have some sort of dress code, however, hobby horsing is extremely physical and so wearing anything other than a sports shirt and leggings on a hot training day is tough, so I guess we match in that sense 😆

      Yuck. The worst thing about regular horseback riding (any sort really) is the ridiculous dress code. It just adds an unnecessary financial burden to the sport, and offers one more means to exclude ppl who don't agree it can't afford.

    These girls are basically hurdle jumpers in track . Not using their arms makes it harder . Do they have track trainers to get the proper form ? This is crazy hard what they are doing .

      No hate to this activity/hobby but they are NOT basically hurdling. If you're running a traditional hurdle race, not only are you sprinting and coming out of blocks (two technical athletic skills) but the hurdling should almost be imperceptible - you disrupt your stride and speed as little as possible. It's not a jump. It would be slightly more comparable in form to steeple chase, but in that case, you're running 3000m. An incredibly mentally and physically challenging feat to incorporate jumps into. Jumping does not make you a sprinter or distance runner 😂 No need to minimize the specific technical demands of hurdling and the ~20 hrs a week track athletes spend training to let these people enjoy jumping over barriers. They exist separately.

    Ppl who hate on this sport are just those who are used to football and the popular sports. Hobby horsing is a fun and very active sport. I don’t think that those haters could even jump a full round of 60-70cm jumps, no faults and a stick in between their legs. Maybe some could. But I’m just saying that if someone is hobby horsing, they’re not weird or ill. I do hobby horsing and every time I’m so out of breath and tired. It’s a very active sport. And most of these ppl are very fit and athletic.
    It’s not an easy sport.

    When I was 9 I used to ride my hobby horse all over our farm, and even joined in with the local hunt on hound exercise (I could keep up with the horses when they were walking). I did grow out of it, but loved doing show jumping and cross country. Moved onto a real pony when I was 11. These people look very athletic and creative. I would join in at an event, but not brave enough to try in public (I am nearly 53)

I feel like people mock this partly because it seems like a Persiflage, which is just human humour at this point but another reason might be that they have lost the ability to see themselves as someone who enjoys doing something so innocent and life-cherishing like jumping around and playing horse.

    The shortness of the sticks seemed like they’d be very uncomfortable in one’s soft regions, but other than that, it looks like good, silly fun!

    Me and my best friend are obsessed with horses and went to a horse show. (A horse show with actual horses) And there were these jumps that humans could go over. So me and my best friend decided to try it as a joke. And it was fun, even if there were no hobby horses included. We decided that hobby horsing surprisingly sounds so much fun and I'm excited to get started one day.
    When I was smaller I had a lot of hobby horses but I gave them away and I regret it! I could be setting up jumps in my yard now and jumping over them with my hobby horse. Luckily my other friend collects hobby horses and will soon give me and my best friend one, cannot wait :)

    Its great that there is a sport for everyone. I do weird stretches in gym for my hands and wrist and i know i look weird. But i feel so great after. Im the one on the stairmaster dancing and yes i look weird but probably got the best workout in the gym at that moment.

    Actually it's great exercise. I ride hunters and some instructors will have their students "canter" jumps to learn what it feels like for extension and collection between fences and to understand it's not an increase in speed but more impulsion.

    I used to laugh at this but in the end I think it's a cool form of activity. It looks a bit funny but it's not really easy to do. Try jumping over poles that are hanging so high. Good luck

      @@capper6100 I've seen worse. Stitching pieces of leather together, pump air in it, have 22 people running around after it. They can't user their arms, except for 2 of them. On both sides of the field they have 3 poles and half the people try to get that leather thing through it, they others trying to prevent it and the same on the other side.
      What proves it's ridiculous, insane and dangerous is that people came watch it and even get into fights. Meanwhile adults go on TV being very serious about it. By comparison this hobby horse sport is the pinnacle of normality.

Taking football as seriously as many people do is really silly but if I described running around on wooden stick with some cloth stitched together to appear as a severed head of a horse shoved on a spike put between the legs of a girl who runs and jumps as if she was an unathletic two legged horse to be judged... it would sound way more silly that kicking a ball into some string.

    Someone on Imgur linked to a video of the competition a few weeks ago and we were unsure whether it was a spoof or a group of odd balls. After a few minutes watching it and seeing how precise, graceful and athletic the events were many of us, myself included, were sold on the Hobby Horse sport. I'm fascinated with it now. Go girls!

    I would have been the champion of this sport back when i was 12 and my folks were too broke to not only get one for me, but to get me anywhere around one.
    Hobby horse definitely is better than stealing a horse because you know, it needed to be "rescued". But i digress.

    It keeps you fit, thats for sure.
    They should open up the sport for more disciplines. Like Hobby-brewery-horsing. You have to pull a truck loaded with beer, or lift heavy barrels, but with a stickhorse between the legs. Don´t know about Brian Shawn, but Eddie Hall, for sure, would give it a shot.

    I absolutely LOVE this. My sister, cousins and I used to ride our imaginary horses all the time growing up. We would set up bench seats and use them as jumps and create courses in the yard. Kinda jealous this wasn't a thing when i was a kid! Born to early to participate but still feel like a pioneer! lol

    As someone who does hobby horsing it is a sport and actually very hard try jumping over 3ft with a stick between your legs ur ankles your calves hurt so bad for us to get hate on something we try hard for?! Its just like hurdles in track but we just have a stick horse because some people can’t afford a real horse so please be nice it’s not like we’re going around neighing at people or barking at them😅
