I saw the thumbnail and said, "Wait, that is NOT Pidge's helmet..." Then I remembered how old I am and grew up on "Defender of the Universe" series. Great build and informative. I really loved the in depth masking information.
Bex- Loved you on Arrow! You are an extremely talented actress. I hope to see you in more shows/films. Evil Ted- genius as usually. Thank you so much for continuing to do these!
Hi, cosplay noob here. How do I measure my head? Like, which measurements are necessary, and once I start making the helmet, what do I do with the measurements?
TheConfuzzledCat typically the widest part of your head is where you should measure. This is your brow bone/bottom of your forehead (unless your face is concave which I really hope it isn’t). I hope you find this helpful
Ted once again you amaze me with your work. Thank you for the tutorial. You have inspired me to craft a Magneto helmet I've been wanting to build for a while now using this template. Thank you!
I just made this this past weekend using this pattern!! It came out great! Even going to add lights to it! (Thanks so much for the pattern, Ted!!) Going to make the rest of the armor, too for a Pidge cosplay for a con I'm going to in December =D Love your videos, Ted, they have been so helpful for a foam noob like me, haha.
Hi Ted I'm Andrew from Scotland massive fan been making props for years and learning foam craft was the next step so found you and got hooked on your crazy skills I've got a challenge for you I've seen only two people do it in foam A guyver 1 bio boosted helmet or a guyver this would be amazing to see and put anyone's skills to the test
Was so excited to get started on my paladin helmet until.... Season 3!!! New helmet design which looks amazing. Any chance you might add to your template to keep up with changes? Please!!!!
I don't know the character, but that helmet is fantastic. I love that green and the blue visor. What a beautiful paint job. Do you put some kind of liner in it to make it fit better and absorb the sweat?
This looks SO amazing I am 15 years old and I just started with cosplaying. You helped me so much with your videos. I am planning on a Jean Grey x-men apocalypse armour cosplay but since I just started with making armour it's really difficult for me planning on what amount of pieces I need to recreate also I'm from Germany so some kind of foams aren't available here 🙄 It would be fantastic if you could do a tutorial for the chest and neck part of this cosplay
Awesome tutorial. This'll help me and a lot of other people out for sure. One question, in the video you said you took her head measurement to ensure a proper fit. How do you go about doing that to adjust the pattern pieces?
OMG it's Pidge! lol Ironically I was sort of dreaming about Voltron...well sort of. I can't help but think don't worry Bex it will be ok, you've got the best in the business making your helmet! lol Anyway that was so cool! That was probably a 20 hour build compressed into 20 minutes so thank you very much! Hmm I was kind of surprised you used 10 mm because I made a helmet using 10 mm once and it didn't quite wrap around properly so I concluded it was too think. Oh well I guess I did something wrong. Anyway thank you for these wonderful videos!
Thank you for yet another awesome video tutorial,Mr.Smith! I would like to ask a few questions though with regard to cutting plastic with a rotary tool:-is it safe to use the Dremel on a polycarbonate dome to cut and enlarge the opening? Some plastics are said to either melt or ignite due to their chemical elements/nature;-what method for airflow inside the dome would you recommend? And if that would be holes drilled into the surface, what would the frequency and size of these holes have to be?Thank you in advance for your response!
I have an iwata airbrush (siphon) used for painting model airplanes and whatnot. Would I be able to load it up with balloon rubber? Or would it just get clogged up?
When would you say it is better to use contact cement VS super glue for the foam parts? is it based on the surface to cover or the sturdiness you want to achieve?
@@EvilTedSmith Goodday, i went to the link and its asking me to " add to cart" . should i click on that? or there a area where i can download it easily?
@Evil Ted Smith, is there a science to the length/angle(s) of the darts? I'm sure a veteran like you can eyeball it, just curious if there's a formula for us beginners.
Hey Ted, loving all of your videos!! I was wondering.. what might be the best way to scale this helmet down? I decided to put one together as a tester and found that it's too large for my head, but I love the design!
Made my helmet while bingeing on both seasons! Just waiting for the visor-btw, the clear visor from the above-mentioned link doesn't seem to come in clear, only the small. But hopefully it's gonna work! Love your patterns, been using them to make my Justice League Momoa Aquaman armour!
Hey Ted! Is there an alternative to the Poly Latex 60 you know about? I'm allergic to latex and working with this stuff would be difficult. Thanks in advance!!
OMG I NEEEEEEEEEEED TO DO THIS OMFGGGGGGGGGGGG BUT IM BROOOOOOOOOOOOOKE XD good job man you have a talent that not alot of peeps have (Also, bex's shirt at 21:10 is adorable and i want it)
Very nice and I just subscribed after watching this video. One of these days I'm actually going to push myself to make something out of foam and your videos are going to be a god send when I do. One quick question, I noticed that the seams on the main part of the helmet were still kind of visible. Was this because you were pressed for time and couldn't fill them in or sand them down or was it because your paint was on the thin side. What do you recommend for covering visible seams?
Hey Ted I'm in the process of making a helmet for my friend and it needs a visor/ eye holes that need to be dark like dark sunglasses would you still use the dye you used in the video? Or would you recomend a tented plastic to work with?
As always, many thanks Ted for your great videos. I wanted to ask you about one point not covered in this one though. How did you get Bex head measurements for that perfect fit ? And how did you adapt your templates to her head size ? I often see you or Bill Duran work with a plaster mold of your head but i suppose you don't always get that luxury or time (make an alginate mold, cast it in plaster or polyfoam...). Do you make a small scale model that you use for patterning and then scale up ?
I am thinking of making this, but my head would probably be be much smaller than Bex's, so is there a way I can scale down the template to my size? Also, how would I go about measuring my head to scale it down? Thanks!
Hi Ted, i wanted to know if there's maybe a international equivalent of Kwik seal. I'm from italy and there's nothing that has the result of that product. The only way to get kwik seal is to get it from ebay but it costs over 60 euros a piece with the shipping from the US. I tried using silicone rubber in some of my pieces but it pealed right off and never dryed completly. I used modelling clay to cover the foams and the result was not so bad but not so good either. Please help, i need to know for my next prop. Thank you
Wanted to add there’s a technique used by .... architects I guess, learned at a job that built models of buildings they were going to actually build, cutting through poster board with an xacto blade, When cutting you barely cut at all, as if you were tracing the outline with a pen, Once the line is scored enough you lightly go over it again going a little deeper every time, it surprisingly makes very clean seams, especially with very tight corners like cutting the visor rectangle out of a mandalorian helmet Also very useful when cutting extremely tight angles 45 degrees or less

Incredible video as always ted! Such a clean looking helmet
This is so amazing! A: really happy about the tutorial for a paladin helmet B: Bex is such a cutie like seeing her get the helmet made my dayyyy
You should show how to measure someone's head and convert the dimensions into helmet piece sizes.
Definitely using this as the base pattern for a Protoman helmet.

Pidge is sitting somewhere in my to-do list so this went straight into the library.
PinkThornVlogs sounds oddly sexual
I love this tutorial and its awesome but i want to make one or my little brother, so how do you "shrink" or scale down the pattern?
Go to a copy store and get the pattern copyed smaller.

Awesome tutorial. This'll help me and a lot of other people out for sure. One question, in the video you said you took her head measurement to ensure a proper fit. How do you go about doing that to adjust the pattern pieces?
I made it for 22 inch diameter head. Measure form the back of your head to your forehead. If your head is bigger just blow up my patterns a bit.
Audrey from scream yAASS, i saw her first at scream and then Voltron!! First time i saw voltron and heard pidge i was like "ITS AUDREY JENSEN!!!!" xD

any ideas on how to make a removable Faceplate on a helmet?

Wow this looks great!
I have an iwata airbrush (siphon) used for painting model airplanes and whatnot.

@Evil Ted Smith, is there a science to the length/angle(s) of the darts? I'm sure a veteran like you can eyeball it, just curious if there's a formula for us beginners.
Not really, it's more of a trail and error. You will get better over time. All you need to do is start.
I love the video! I was wondering if a heat gun was not available, would a blow dryer suffice? Thanks again for the amazing tutorial😁
Heat gun is the best for shopping foam. Not a hair dryer.

can you make a prototype of cardboard? Or does cardboard lack the qualities EVA foam have?
The patterns were made for EVA foam.
Do you think you’d make a pattern for the full paladin armor set?
No, I was happy just to make the helmet.
Nice Ted! See you over at Frank's Soon.

You probably already answered this, but can one use a band saw to cut out the parts from the foam? Is there a reason you don't?
