This film is essentially about two people: A girl who has cultivated her mind, yet needs to grow and discover her physical side, and a sleazy hustler who becomes a better man through his relationship with her. That mutual character growth is what makes this final scene truly special.
Johnny was never a sleazy hustler. He is simply looked down upon and put down by those like the hotel owner and his son because he’s from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s like the black knight ready to step up to the plank. You can see it in the way he takes care of Penny.
