That's an accessory belt, not timing belt. The 350Z has a timing chain not belt.

Coming from a certified mechanic, TJ is incorrect. A cracked belt is perfectly fine and more than often usual for older vehicles. Cracks only means the belt is adjusting. You only NEED to replace a belt if it is warn bellow the spindle line (really no better way to describe that.) and if the belt is frayed. Just and FYI so you all know the proper belt wear.
BAdventurous errrrr not quite true, while I agree that wear between ribs is important, belt degradation in the form of cracking is a sure sign of a worn belt as well. Most belt materials degrade with age and cracking is its way of letting you know how old it is, just like the way tires weather-check.

This is perfect, I'm taking a transmissions class right now and I just learned about Differentials. Actually had a practical on building one today.
A regular or open diff sends power to the wheel with the least traction. ie: If its snowing and youre going up a hill only 1 tire will spin out of control while the other maintains traction
What a limited slip diff does is it sends some of that power thats going to the wheel spinning out of control to the other wheel so you have more traction.

Hey man. You guys be careful under the lift. I'm in highschool and I'm a huge advocate for safety and today some scary shit happened. My auto teacher brings in these big ass landscaping lawn mowers and we had it on a lift and my friend was under it and the lawn mower slipped off the lift from him breaking a bolt and it fell right on top of his head and split his head open and it took 8 of us to lift it off of him and he looked me in the eye and blood just came down his face. It's was the scariest thing I have ever seen and it probably doesn't compare to what you guys have seen but please please please be safe out there live your life to the fullest but be safe. Wear safety glasses check your lifts and remember to keep moving forward. You the man Tj

Very, very simply explained, an open diff let's each wheel slip and spin 100% independently of each other. Limited slip differential makes it so once one of the wheels spin a certain amount faster than the other (depending on the diff settings) the tire that isn't spinning as fast "hooks up" and get's brought up to speed as well. A locking diff makes it so the whole axle is connected all the time so both wheels spin exactly the same speed all the time. I think Chevrolet has a great video on explaining how an open differential works from the 1930s, just search it on RUclips and it should be among the first to pop up.

TJ, limited slip is it only allows so much slip before it locks the dif. i.e. "limited" slip. Open dif will allow power to go to the wheel with the least resistance. so if you had an open dif with one powered wheel on asphalt and one on ice, all power would go to the ice due to lower traction. limited would only allow so much before it locks and starts giving power to the asphalt

In an open slip diff the wheel will not spin in the opposite direction you are driving, the transmission will just send all the power to the wheel that is slipping so you can never break the wheels out. Limited slip will sense this and send power to the wheels with traction so you can actually break the back end free, these are way better for limited traction situations like snow and rain.

Open diff will spin opposite ways when off the round. When driving they don't spin opposite ways of course... an open diff will apply power to only the wheel (1) with the least traction.
Limited slip will "lock" both wheels together when it senses 1 slip.
viscous limited slip has clutches and works like s LSD but locks only as much as it needs to, in order to achieve traction evenly.
Also not a timing belt. That's an accessory belt or serpentine belt as people call it.

Open differential, the engine torque will flow through the wheel with least resistance. When doing a donut the outside wheel has less weight than the inside wheel, outside wheel spins free and the back of the car won't kick out.
torsion LSD, the power still follows the path of least resistance, but up to 4 times the amount of grip can be passed across to the other wheel. this is good on a nice flat even track/road, but as soon one wheel lifts of the ground, it will act as an open differential. you need at least some traction on at least one wheel. when the car is on a hoist, or jacked up, if you spin one wheel clockwise the other will rotate the opposite direction.
locked or welded differential is both wheels same speed, same direction all the time.

A welded diff/spool will spin the same way when you turn the tires by hand
A limited slip will turn different ways when turned by hand
Open diff one wheel will spin when turned
TJ says to replace a belt if there's "any sort of cracking." but it is very acceptable if your belt has minor cracks as long as two or more consecutive ribs aren't cracked/broken. Yes, TJ's belt definitely needed replacing but don't go buying yourself a new belt if you see minor cracks in yours, it still has a lot of life in it.
With an open diff one wheel will not spin the opposite direction like it does when you spin the wheel with your hand, with an open rear end the trans will apply power to the wheel with the least resistance.
The very end of the videos are my favorite, "I'll be your crankshaft", who comes up with that sh*t. 😂
A little advice TJ. Don't put a cheap NAPA belt or Auto Zone, or Advanced Auto parts, or O'Reilys. Get a Goodyear GatorBack/Continental Elite belt. You'll see, feel and hear the difference. They do NOT slip. If you need the part number for you Z let me know, I've got a Z and a G.

Never put tension on the belt with a power tool cause you dont have as good a gauge as to how tight you are making it vs using a torque wrench or even just a normal wrench. If you put too much tension on a belt it can rob you of horse power, strain the accessories and limit the life of components. Also when you do a belt job, especially if you have changed the belt yourself before, it is wise to check the tensioner bearing because squeaking from the alternator, compressor and tensioner sound similar and sound like they are coming from the same place. This will be hard to find because if the belt runs multiple components, it will be impossible to isolate the faulted part. Tip: If you spin the bearing by hand and hear any kind of noise no matter how small. Remember that that abnormal sound at operating speed will be a lot louder. Given it is not required to check the bearing, it is still better than not knowing and throwing money at the problem later on. I find good result in removing the tensioner completely to do this unless cautioned against by OEM.

In an "Open" differential, the wheels are "openly" permitted to spin at different speeds. This often means that all, or the majority, of the power is put into whatever wheel is slipping (power goes the direction of least resistence). In a "limited slip" differential, the differential "limits the slip", so when one wheel begins to free spin it engages some countermeasure (from brake on the "slip" side to a clutch int the differntial locking the two sides together) permitting even distribution of power.

open diff means, that the power will go to the tire with the least resistance, meaning if you stand with one tire on an icy surface and the other on tarmac, the one on the icy one will spin and because of that no power goes to the other tire meaning you will just stand still (technically) , you have multiple types of lsd but the common ones are clutch pack, it means that a spring pushes a clutch on to the axle, the friction will clamp down the gear to the axle and make it work as a solid unit. that way the icy surface won't spin and you will get grip again, quick explanation of it :p
My belt took a shit halfway through my 16 hour drive, midnight, literally in the middle of nowhere. Slept in my car for 8 hours on the side of the freeway 'till a local auto shop opened up. Took an uber to and from the auto parts store and replaced it myself. The only thing I had with me was a screwdriver and used it to pull the band around the top pulley. Took me a while but I got it done. Lesson learned. Don't neglect your timing belt!

Y'know what, worst belt I saw was not only cracked. Beat up 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. The darn thing was split in two in TWO SECTIONS right down the middle and IT STILL WORKED. The van also went long without oil changes, 2 years is the long record for the one I kept track on for _time._ The other one was like 16,000 miles overdue and I have no idea whatsoever how long that oil was in. No, the engine wasn't ticking or anything. Perhaps it's because the van usually saw only 3 miles till it was shut off.
It all comes down to your networking skills like you guys said, and gaining experience along the way
change timing belts at 100,000kms or inspect by checking that the belt has next to no slack and no ribbing texture on the outside surface of the belt. this doesn't apply for timing chains as they are generally good for the life of the car almost.

serpentine belt* this is the belt that your accessories are ran off of. alternator ac compressor power steering pump etc. the timing belt is what connects the cam gear or gears (single cam or dual cam) on the top end to the crank shaft on the bottom end of the motor and keeps the vales opening and closing at the correct timing. ergo. timing belt. common misconception. and yes you got the open diff vs lsd trick correct. if the wheels spin together.
