  • Officials from the Ontario government have confirmed that a group of temporary workers from South Korea has recently arrived in Windsor to work at a new Stellantis electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant.
However, some Canadians are raising concerns that the use of taxpayer subsidies to employ foreign workers could disadvantage Canadians seeking employment opportunities in the auto industry.
"What's driving the concern is the $15 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies given to Stellantis," said Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre.
    Global’s Colin D'Mello reports.

Since disengaging from China the west needs a new manufacturing base. Instead of allying with new low cost countries and turning them into competitors Canada, australia and countries in Europe are bringing in cheap labor through mass immigration since the good Ole days of selling dirt and IP to China for easy money are over.
I am personally not a great fan of this strategy but the think tanks in the west think this is a good idea to keep western companies ahead so I just sit watch and cry from my arm chair while dealing with high rent and avoiding the subway

If Canada bought an Arrow 3 missile defense system from Israel and Israelis were brought in to set the system up, would there be any backlash? Suppose Canada were to buy the Israeli Arrow 3 and INSIST that only Canadians are to work on the initial set-up. Good luck on the system working properly.
Canada is as CLUELESS when it comes to tech as Mexico. Canada needs to realize how far back they lag in technology and just be glad that the EV plant is in Canada, not Mexico. If Canada had cutting edge tech workers, why not build a domestically designed EV plant on its own? Why depend on South Koreans for their expertise when Canadians should be able to do a shoddy attempt on their own for double the cost?
The real question is this: how come in just a few generations, Canada imports tech from asia when it was the reverse not too long ago? South Koreans were farmers a few generations past and now they have some of the world's leading tech workers, while Canada still retains its farmer mentality. Why?
Canada should stop complaining about imported tech workers and create their own. Too bad that by the time they finish reading the manuals on how to do anything, it is already obsolete with the pace of information these days.
It is clear that Canada has been left behind as far as tech goes. Just admit defeat, accept the EV plant start-up workers, and stop being racist. Israelis setting up a missile defense system in Canada bringing in Israelis would not be "news", just common sense; but when asians are brought in to set up an EV plant, red flags are raised everywhere. Canada is so racist, they can't admit they NEED help from asians.
Canada should stop the entire project and make their own EV's from scratch using only Canadian tech and Canadian workers. Sell these Canadian EV's to South Korea. Fact is, nobody in South Korea would buy them, and even if they were given to South Koreans for free, they would melt them down for scrap metal and use that to build proper EV's for half the cost.
We have some morons in the comments and in the country who think that the South Korean workers are in Canada for their own benefit, like as if they need the money or some channel to immigration. Canada NEEDS the South Koreans to set up the EV plant PROPERLY and if it were not the case then why not build an all-Canadian EV plant with all-Canadian tech?
South Korean construction firms have countless contracts globally because they have the right expertise at a very competitive cost. How about Canada? How is their level of expertise and cost compared to their global competitors? How many Canadian firms have contracts, say, in the wealthy middle east? Why is South Korea beating Canada to a pulp when it comes to global manufacturing and engineering contracts? Why did Poland procure a $13.7 billion arms deal from South Korea and not Canada? Why is manufacturing so weak in Canada? Why does Canada depend on the US for arms and defense? Why can't Canada stand on its own two feet instead of being treated like some stumbling toddler on the global stage? It is because Canada is an immature weak proxy of the US that thinks that because of its vast geographical size and natural resources it should be respected globally. Canada is beyond arrogant and is filled with undisciplined racist moronic supremacists that can't build anything of value on their own.
Let me remind you that Canada's population is 40 million compared with 1.4 BILLION documented Chinese and 1.4 BILLION Indians. Canada should realize that it is a dwarf's dwarf, a mere statistical margin of error compared with major world powers. Canada is the colder version of Mexico with fewer people, burgers instead of tacos.
Canada spends more time on cannabis, beer, and hockey than on training their people for today's competitive global work environment. When the oilsands dry up, the forests are bare, and the mines empty, the Canadians will wake up from their drug-induced coma driving a horse and carriage while the rest of the world is using fusion powered flying cars.
Stop the racist nonsense and start making all-Canadian factories in Canada using only Canadian tech and Canadian workers using only Canadian-made Blackberries with Canadian politicans giving them an ego rub-down when they are on break. Who cares how unreliable and unprofitable all-Canadian manufacturing projects would be in Canada--we need to support our unqualified Canadian workers first!
Bunch of morons in the media spreading xeno-phobia too, eh?

They just saw the fact that the plant would when built provide jobs making the EV batteries. Realistically the site preparation and building erection can be done with Canadian labour. The equipment to manufacture the batteries will probably come from South Korea. The installation of that equipment will require experienced personnel who will come from South Korea and other parts of the world. Project management is probably from South Korea.Employee training from South Korea. Its new technology so you need foreign expertise to get the plant built and operational.

Sk. Is an advanced high tech country (far more advanced than canada in manufacturing) that could have opened in Mexico but was wooed by Canada with incentives to transfer technology to Canada as part of contributing to the western alliance. The hundreds of millions potential revenue annually will help support the canadian currency, seed and expand future manufacturing in canada for high tech future like cars, flight vehicles, more advanced battery manufacturing r and d.
The sk expats who will start up the companies will be part of that technology transfer since there will not be equals here in canada ( sorry canadians they r coming from a much more advanced level of knowledge)
I am looking forward to Canada's manufacturing sector combining with our advanced ai software and recent surge in human capital from immigration, to move canada into the next stage of development. At potential future 50 million population we have a shot at competing with the great powers

it is premature to move on this at this time. when call centers used their CDN staff to fly overseas, to Train locals to become the new call centers, the CDNs were the first on site to train and be paid to work overseas.
as for 'what if some of the bodies sent are wives, or sex slaves'. that is to be confirmed // Koreans are Allies more than once and have never attacked the CDNs.
as for, if the Koreans become permanent workers, then they will become CDNs using visas, like most, and then they never leave windsor. wind -sore tell me all about how i never go back there not even to visit the Studio 4 (if it still stands).
due to Big D, across the water, the air stinks.
Wages paid include Taxes and they r withheld so the same Taxes would be Kept, at the wage rates, regardless of their country of origin.
// just try to Remember Koreans are allies fought in war with and against the communists' hoard and there by Just give them a little rope // God Bless the workers for they know profits never go into the GDP. and it is the GDP that is the economy.
Allies First then maybe the americans then the other nations CDNs have more fingers in my PIEs than most other Free Nations Native CDNs included

    Peace be with you ❤️
Who can escape the Judgment of the King of Kings, the LORD JESUS CHRIST
The sinners of Zion fear, and the ungodly tremble, saying, ‘ Who among us will dwell with the devouring fire, and who among us will dwell with burning forever? ’
But he who acts justly, who speaks honestly, who abhors extorted wealth, who shakes his hand to not accept a bribe, who stops his ears from listening to bloodshed, who closes his eyes not to see evil . Those who do
He will dwell on high; a solid rock will be his fortress; his food will be supplied; his waters will not fail.
Your eyes will see the king in his beauty, and your eyes will see the vast land." Isaiah 33:14-17.
We must all realize that the key to all sources lies in the Words of the LORD ALMIGHTY, the GOD of Israel, and we must live our lives by putting them into Practice.
    Psalm 15. 148.
The Word of the Gospel gives wisdom, and the life of wisdom gives Eternal Life. 🌈👑🙏❤️🌾💎

What's so bad about foreign experts setting up an EV battery factory for us? The factory is jointly owned by Canadian and Korean companies anyway.

if the product they are producing is so good and there is a viable market for it why should taxpayers need to fund it

@@user-wz4op4zv7o The taxpayers ar not funding the product they are funding the establishment of high tech manufacturing in Canada both for the economy as well as for jobs. We payed a lot for this company but the supporting companies that will supply it are almost as large and they cost us nothing. My only wishis that we should own the land and buildings as assurance that they will stay in Canada.

Korean company puts at max 4 billion into cost of plant.
Canadian tax payers put at least 15 billion.
Not a fan of that, nor should you.

There is only one way for real change and it ain’t by complaining on the internet or standing on the side of a road with a stupid sign. You want change you gotta show force and an ability to turn politicians world upside down.
