I just picked one of these up in Chicago for half the prices the seller was asking. It has a misfire, but I had to get a new tensioner and belt put on this weekend before I can do any diagnostics. I’m gonna guess yours jumped time and bent valves.
This is my dream car .. am going to have it one day.. i would like to thank you for these videos .. they will help me learn more about my dream.. too much love coming from malawi 🔥🔥
last year I got an X3 35i with two down holes and low compression on the rest, it had an exhaust vanos timing code which after getting the jig on resulted on the engine being out of timing on the exhaust side, did a leak down and air was escaping thru the exhaust valves, head out, light down the exhaust port and found 4 outta 6 cylinders had bent valves, got new ebay special valves lol and some fcp parts kits and got it running pretty good for under $600. Considering the engine itself is 4k I would say repair it if the bottom end is fine and sell it.
Common on these is the oil pump bolts come lose and then it's good night vienna to that engine. I'm going to say that potentially it's spun the bearings on the crank too.
I ve always wanted to get myself a F10 535i or 535D, I would also like to be able to work on my own cars…….but after watching your video, I guess I will stick with my Lexus IS250 😅 Fair play to you, I wish I have skills like yours and space to pull apart cars like what you are doing! Keep up with the good work!
We all start with no experience with cars! So don't let that discourage you. I think the best way to learn is pick a project you would like to do, watch a RUclips video or read some forums on how to do it, and dig in! If anyone ever tells you that you shouldn't do something because you don't know how to do it, they are being ridiculous. If we never tried things that we didn't know how to do we would all still be laying on the ground unable to walk and talk. That being said it is much easier to work on cars when you have more then one car so if something breaks your not stuck without a ride...
@@ShawnzeyRacing Yes sir!!! I m currently using my IS250 as a learning platform. I hope one day once my skills has stepped up I might eventually move onto a F10 BMW!
for some reason this comment came up in my "I haven't responded" list 5 months later so I'm just going to drop a comment here so it says I responded to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I did find a used engine with good compression close to me for 3500 but I think I'm going to repair this one. Depends what we find is wrong in the next video!
Good progress man! N55 owner here also and that engine is terribly neglented from all the oil leaks 😂 my guess for the compression things would probably be also pointing to the timing and damaged valves, firing order on this engine starts from cyl 1-5.. so could be the cause 😄 we will see
We did not. This garage was originally 30x25 feet and a 10 foot ceiling. And I had it extended 27 feet out with a 16 foot ceiling with the hopes of getting a lift some day. I'd love to make a video of me finishing the shop with a lift sometime soon!
Are German cars harder to work on or are they basically like anything other car? I’ve always stayed away from them in fear of awkward bolts or weird German only processes or something lol. He made it look easy to disassemble. Is basic maintenance doable or overly complicated for reason?
I think there is a little learning curve but all basic maintenance is very doable even on German cars. However when stuff starts breaking they can be tough to work on.
In my case I already had the tranny out so I just undid the motor mounts, took off the AC compressor from the engine (did not disconnect any lines as the AC was working fine so I didn't want to mess with it) and moved it over to the left side. Kept the bumper in place as well as the AC radiator and intercooler. With that and the downpipe off was able to pull it out upwards. I came across the same issue of the tow hook but ended up just bolting on a plate where the oil filter housing goes and bolting a chain onto that. I've seen it happen on rebuilt engines that they used those cheap china rings/kits, and they lose the heat tempering over time and get soft and lose all compression. Wasn't on a bmw though. Cylinder walls were perfect, literally just needed re-rings. That would be absolute best case scenario IMO.
Yea I thought it would be fun for both me and you guys if I took more of the car apart. It did end up making for a long video. But I also appreciated how easy it was to get to everything with out breaking my back! And I'm always so nervous that I'll drop the engine going up and over the front! 😬 And I agree if we can get a super cheap and easy fix for the engine then we'll have some budget for some fun parts 😎
Timing chain. The plastic guides will have broken up, the chain has jumped and possibly bent valves. Any post 2001 BMW N engine (N for nightmare) is a leaky, sweaty old thing with the same old faults repeated again and again. It'll be a nice car when fixed. Until it breaks again😂
You actually didn't have to pull off the front end you could just separate the transmission from the engine by losen the torque converter bolts or if you have normal cluth just undo the transmission bolts and pull it out from the top it would save you lots of time
@@ShawnzeyRacing it’s sort of a secret because bmw kept suing them so now it’s invite only but has repair instructions for every bmw for every part and more importantly, every torque spec. I just need your email to send you an invite and I’ll have to delete this comment after 🤣

I had to pull my transmission off 4 times when putting in a new clutch. (In case anyone is wondering, if you switch to a lightweight flywheel you HAVE to use a sprung clutch. I saw a random comment somewhere that solved that mystery for me so hopefully someone sees this and saves themself some trouble and $400 😢) anyways, those bellhousing bolts are a bitch

Rust PREVENTION. A BMW's out of oil if it ain't leaking it. My e46 is getting the same treatment. However, everyone is telling me that removing the bumper is stupid. They're the stupid ones. BTW, my engine is only $400 to replace with a salvage yard special.
May sound weird, but I think he was sucking water which damaged the engine, but not completely. No professional repair, but amateur trials leaving gaskets and parts not fit together tightly. Then driving on and ignoring the increased oil loss. As a consequence all burned off. You may find valve, crankshaft and piston damage and water in engine and gear box.

did you have to take off the shifter linkage on the top of the transmission? and if so howd you get to it?
The shifter in this car is electronic so the shifter doesn't physically connect to the transmission in this case.

what did you use to get the transmission lines off?
The quick release is built into the lines! so you just take out the safety clip, push the hose in, push the release, and pull!

Im guessing lack of oil did it in , rod bearings went first and the rest fallowed , you are a brave man :))

ill guess bad valve stem seals causing extra oil leaking into cylinders and maybe frying piston rings

I have a 2015. Basic maintenance such as oil and brakes are straight forward. You will need a code reader that will rewind the EPB however.

surprised you didnt remove that hood any earlier
Yea don't know why it didn't cross my mind until it was in the way of the engine hoist lol.
you can just remove hood struts and put a hood into service position by placing a screwdriver or whatever thin tool inside hood service position hole
Googled it... And you're absolutely right! never knew about that, I will use that method next time thanks!
What size are the bolts that hold the hood on?
Timing chain. The plastic guides will have broken up, the chain has jumped and possibly bent valves. Any post 2001 BMW N engine (N for nightmare) is a leaky, sweaty old thing with the same old faults repeated again and again.
It'll be a nice car when fixed. Until it breaks again😂
Very good guess! We will see in the next video coming very soon! And you are definitely correct this car leaks and sweats oil everywhere...
for the next time: take engine and transmission with the subframe out. way lot easier and faster.
Would that still be easier on jack stands with out a lift?
