Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory. Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

My dear mother worked her whole life as a ballet pianist. I have such fond memories of sitting quietly in the corner, watching the students rehearse and do the most wonderful things to the music. It was always such a treat to sit through a class after school and admire the absolutely unique combination of strength and grace that ballet dancers possess and express. Love watching these classes and rehearsals, enjoying Tim's playing!
Such sweet memories...

Damn you know every dancer
It’s really awesome to see dancers wearing their natural hair in a ballet company. Especially one as respected and traditional as the royal ballet. I hope they continue to set the standard for inclusion for years to come.
All this said, there is so much work that needs to be done (in the royal ballet & beyond) to make ballet truly inclusive and accessible. This is only the beginning.
what does this mean ?
@@neatodude3339 I was speaking on black dancers wearing their natural hair/ traditionally black hairstyles
yes!! there is so much work to be done for inclusivity still but it’s so heart warming to appreciate the progress that is being made.
Not only the hair, notice how one of the ballerinas has a pair of brown pointe shoes instead of the pink one! Makes me very happy!
Such a privilege watching the attention to detail and the amount of work these stunning dancers put in. They do look healthy and fit: great that the Royal Ballet and its school has invested so much in proper healthcare and nutrition.
@@bw3747 leave if you're going to be negative and body shame these beautiful dancers.
Lmao "chunky"? What even
@@bw3747 what a surprise that people who have to stand en pointe for hours every day, who can hold their weight on one leg for ages and still have it look graceful, who are professional athletes who use their legs intensely, have muscular thighs 🙄 your comment is stupid and offensive, and you’re clearly not a ballet dancer
@@bw3747 that is pure muscle
Yes! They look beautiful!
You really forget the Pianist who plays the Score so beautifully in the background He is Exceptional
I still remember the Entrance of the Shades rehearsal. Just like that one, this feels magical. Two of my favorite rehearsals.
Yes! It is such a treat seeing members of the corps rehearsing - seeing the individual dancers working so hard to perfect them to appear to move as one apparently effortlessly! Really see the detail of the choreography too. Magical.
I love how they all smile so beautifully when they finish a bit! Fun contrast with their solemn bride faces.
Anyone that hasn’t done ballet hasn’t the slightest clue how incredibly technical and exhausting it is mentally, physically, emotionally. These dancers, teachers and pianists are brilliant! Bravo.
So true. Ive been doing ballet since i was 5. Most people dont realize how hard we work
Love to watch Samantha Raine interaction with the ladies and pianist, always so polite and thorough.
The Royal ballet Corps are extraordinary - sharp and well- trained technicians - rehearsals are always much more interesting than performance- you can see the artistry and stamina needed to be a ballet dancer -
The unsung hero is the pianist playing flawlessly for such a long time.
Unsung? The répétiteurs are thanking him every two seconds!
Not only do I know how physically intense they are working but you can SEE it in the well earned sweat that you can see and yet they maintain the sheer grace throughout. One of the most physically taxing things ever and it’s no wonder they are in an amazing corps
Love the diversity in the corp. Absolutely stunning!
Get over the MF race thing.
@@plawton35 we will when there’s finally race equality 😍
@@plawton35 ew, get over yourself
@@waffles658 it's about having talent. not about how many racially diverse dancers, weather they have talent or not ,you can get into a co. 😍
@@barbarag868 why can’t we appreciate diversity in the dance industry… i don’t know if you’ve payed attention to ballets for the past fifty years but dancers who are usually of different ethnicities, as opposed to being white, often get shut down or are more likely to get rejected… so you can go ahead and shut up while we praise the diversity that so many people have been waiting to see in the dance community
So nice to see a non toxic comment section that isn't full of people attacking eachother over unnecessarily negative comments!
From what I’ve observed, ballet dancers generally don’t do that in public.
@@waltertomaszewski1083 Um read the original comment again. The person isn't talking about the dancers.
@@chiaraippoliti Um, I’ve already reread it. Several times.
My original comment still stands.
Agree..look at the positive always
Unlike the Russian part of balletic RUclips which is always full of stupid fanwars between different claques. Of course not all Russian ballet fans behave that way, but those claqueurs are very vocal and can give the wrong impression.
Cant wait till I’m in the royal ballet! It’s always been my dream and I’m going to work hard to achieve it.
Good luck!
Good luck, I hope you can achieve your dream!!
Keep practicing you’ve got it
wishing you the best of luck!! you got this!!
Good luck I’m sure you will be brilliant. are u in ballet school at the moment or with a different company?
The Royal Ballet corps look sooooooooooooooooooo healthy 🥰
It’s funny when she says “Alive!” when the Willis are literally dead. So beautiful!
i love these videos so much! it's like watching dance moms minus the traumatized children, mean teacher, and batshit crazy moms. i just love watching the process of dances being created. it's so beautiful and calming to me idk why.
Thank you. The Corp de ballet 🩰 is always the heart of every ballet. I feel they do get overshadowed by principle Dancers and audience favourites, but it takes great stamina and control to stand still for ages in end. 👏👏👏👏 to them 🩰🩰👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yes indeed: I spent my professional life in another sort of corps - an opera chorus - and it's a wonderful thing to move in concert with others and the music, utterly fullfilling in itself.
I have watched this so many times! Each time I choose a different dancer to focus on (yay for all the different colored leotards and skirts, lol). Each dancer is so lovely in her own way, and as a unit they are perfection.
I adore the Corps. They are ALL so beautiful, and such great dancers. I really enjoy watching their rehearsals as much as watching the principles. Thank you so much for sharing with us!💕
As someone who danced ballet for 11 years-- these people are incredible! The amount of stamina required and the technique, it's all astounding. Everyone looked beautiful!
There ladies are just so pure, technically; so happy, emotionally. That’s why we love Royal Ballet! I’m flying over half of the world again to see these ladies this May 2022!
How was the show in May!? I would love to see them in person!
Giselle is my favourite ballet of all time . My goodness . I love Act 2. I wish I had started ballet when I was younger . I take Adult Ballet classes at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto. Beautiful
My favorite ballet too. 2.act is magical.
The ethnic mix of corps is beautiful!!! It makes my soul sing to see so many different types of women excelling in a profession that has been so limited traditionally. This kind of inclusion will make ballet relevant again and that makes this dancers soul sing!
oh please. That old chestnut again. Move on..
@@bw3747 ….another snarky comment on RUclips. What a bore. 🥱
@@raeperonneau4941 Truth always hurts Go back to your 'soul singing' whatever that crap means. 😢
@@bw3747 Bless your heart.
@@raeperonneau4941 singing souls, blessing hearts? !
Wonderful work! The choreography of Giselle for the corps de ballet is a favorite of mine. This looks like a healthy and pleasant work environment, where the dancers are treated like the grown-up professionals they are. What a contrast with the World Ballet Day 2021 Bayadere rehearsal of the corps of the Mariinsky Ballet. That was rough...
do you have the link to that by any chance? i cant find it :(
I think they mean Bolshoi
tough love, maybe that's why the Russians are better.
@@papagen00 No maybe. That is why they are way better, always have been, always will
@@bw3747 beauty laced with misery will always be misery
Thank you so much for a behind-the-scene peek at what goes into making this iconic act of Giselle look so wonderful. I love the coaches and their gentle but firm corrections and adjustments. Quite a contrast to the harshness of the Bolshoi director during a rehearsal of the famous entrance of the Shades in La Bayadere. I agree with an earlier comment that the ROH dancers all look so healthy, and beautiful, I may add. I wonder who will dance Myrta. Cannot wait to watch the live stream of this next month! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
I think it just MAY be...(you won't believe it).....Nunez! I just watched her in rehearsal doing it guided by Monica Mason....but I could be wrong🙄
@@tishhill9561 Wow! I’d love to see her dance Myrta! ❤️
The programm with cast and dates are on their site. Multiples dancers actually, and multiples dates, the live stream it's when? Maybe you figure out who it will be by the date.
It was Marianela with Yasmine Naghdi and Mathew Ball. Absolutely brilliant! I loved every minute of it!!
These girls’ dancing is magical. The great satisfaction and pleasure I get from watching the corps often surpass the perfect performance of the well polished performance of the primas/ principals/ first soloist; I am not making comparison because it’s impossible- they serve different purposes; however; the phenomenal group of perfectly trained ballerinas dancing as one often performing very hard steps and movements has its own unique mesmerizing effect 👍❤️💙🌟
The ladies you mean.
They are all so beautiful. I wish I could still do this. I miss those days.
loved watching the corps and the symmetry, and most of them look healthy too, which is fashionable these days thank goodness

i don’t even do ballet but this is so mesmerising to watch like how do they do this with there body’s it’s just incredible
Loved watching this rehearsal. TY so much . I found ballet as an older adult and LOVED IT. I took every class I could find and ending teaching a little. I so wish I had discovered it earlier in life. It still gave so much back to me-besides a bad back now-lol- I remember doing 64 changments in air at age 55 and felt like I was flying. For most people they would laugh but for me it was heaven. These young girls are amazing to watch.
My favourite part. Always gives me goosebumps. Love it
Just brilliant! Our wonderful British " less is more" gracious technique, is truly beautiful to witness! Being true to the Romantic Style, is perfectly displayed in this rehearsal. Thank you so much The Royal Ballet!
My day made much better by seeing such beauty in ballet. A big Thank you to the teachers for great instruction.
Oh I love watching rehearsals!! Beautiful work & Oh Giselle how i love everything about this ballet ‘
Completely Magical !
❤️🕊🎶💪
Please, the dancers were amazing as always. And never receive enough credit. Super ladies!
Absolute epitome of Strength. Amazing each and every time. They have such a difficult task and execute it with effort & beauty!
This really shows the importance of the choreologist who first notated the dances all those years ago and the many Dancers and Repetiteurs who have passed down the technique and interpretation through the years (Too many to mention for fear of omissions )
Bravo! Perfect! Always wonderful to see a corps de ballet in perfect synchronicity (especially when it comes to the Wilis). I just applauded you in front of the TV :)
What an absolute treat it is to watch these beautiful ladies work their art. Just mind blowing really. They’re so fit! Thank you.
Oh my god,This is beautiful! All the girls did it so well!

Wow this really makes me want to buy a ticket to see a show. It is nice to see the hard work that goes into this. I love and appreciate the dancers even more now. I'm just amazed. I was never into ballet until now. Thank you for sharing this.
So many lovely new dancers in the corps!
Crazy about these demi-solo Willi variations. So pure in style. One of the best bits in the whole ballet. btw, this corps is so beautiful, jeez.
where do they find these ladies??
The RB school actually trains them so excellently
Claire Calvert's back is shredded AF
I have good memories on my dad teaching royal ballet classes probably one of the best experiences
Just lovely and such hardworking dancers in not the most favourable conditions; the heat and pace was taxing, as we could see. Bravo!

I am not surprised that Giselle is known for being Technically Challenging and watching this amazing opportunity to it being put together I am in awe.
Wonderful thank you ladies.
Just surpurb 👏👏👏👏
This was absolutely stunning! Ive always wanted to dance but my mother refused to put me in classes as I have a bone disorder which meant my legs bowed and were too weak to be doing these beautiful jumps and spins. As a young adult making my own decisions I still have decided to not take those steps into dance. Despite still having the slight chances of getting lessons to the point Id be dancing in big competitions my bone disorder is progressively getting worse therefore Id be wasting my time. My legs today wont be able to perform to the standards they need to. It's disappointing but the privilege to watch these talented women is just as incredible!
*Idk why but this seems like a privilege to watch…*
Thank you :)
they look incredible.
Thank you thank you.
Melissa Hamilton is absolutely stunning 🤩
Agree...she is breathtaking and her dancing has such a precise yet light and floating quality. She stands out as having that indefinable "it" factor that the great dancers have.
Which one is she?
Watching this without Beatriz Stix-Brunell In the company is very strange. However, I wish her well in her studies and her future career.
Right? OMG! I miss watching her and her energy so much... ❤
But if she's happy, so are we!
Didn't know she left till now :( wish her all the best in her future endeavors!!
@@michellea2203 Yeah she retired from dancing and has received a place at Stanford. Her last performance was June or July I cant remember.

Katharina Nikelski is beautiful...I'm obsessed with her eyebrows. This was lovely and so fun to watch!
Such amazing performances. Anyone who disrespects the ballet should be forced to go through rehearsals like this. Guaranteed their bones would be cracking.
My family do. They don't realize how hard we work
interesting to see how dancers body develops with time and experience both Clair and Melissa's Musculature is so much more advanced to copy with the extra strain put on first soloists ?
how are they all so beautiful :')
