Nate, thank you so much for dedicating your time and passion to others. This is exactly the series I've been looking for. I've been a recording artist for a bit now and am hoping to hone my skills in live performance. I just bought my first PA and I have a lot to learn. Your videos are perfect. Keep rolling. -Zubris
Thank you Zubris! Will do. I've been working on a spin-off channel called Live Sound 101 where I will continue this video series eventually. So far it's got over 150 vlog videos about doing live sound. The vlogs aren't as well produced but it will give you something to listen to in the background to pick up some things and learn the mindset of an audio engineer. Hope you enjoy it.
I've just got a job as a sound engineer/studio tech for a small local studio I rehearse at. I'm new to it. I'm assisting the established engineer but your tutorials are great homework. Thankyou : )
Wound up falling into doing live sound for my church long story. Yes that’s why I’m not sleeping in a Sunday morning at 5 a.m. yah there’s a LOT to learn. You can start with this is a knob and totally not be too rudimentary for me
Hey dude, I might pick-up mixing FOH again, as a hobby for a small band. And it was awesome to see that I actually have in my posession, the Sound Reinforcement Handbook by Yamaha! Bought that one many, many years ago, and I can vouch for it being an awesome book. I'll be watching all your posts now....
Good questions to be asking Marko. There are many types of AV technicians. To narrow things down you'd first have to pick an industry, film, broadcast, commercial integration, residential integration, rental staging & live sound, educational, medical, government, etc. All of those industries and more require skilled AV technicians of some sort and of varying degrees of specialty. Each industry has different specific needs and equipment requirements.
love this series! I started doing live sound because I really was infatuated with it when I went to shows I was always more in awe of the sound techs then the musicians. wanted to do live sound but it was hard to get a job w no experience. so I started a production company just so I could do sound at shows. still doing both and just love it!
Oh the other reason I started the production company was so my band could play consistently I also do recording and all that. my production company is called *The Outlet Unplugged* if you want to, check out our live videos and interviews on RUclips and our Facebook page.
Hey John Amity, Glad you found the recommendations in this video helpful. Let me know if you need more. There's a lot of very informative content out there, but it's often mixed in with the junk on search results. I have seen a few awful "home recording" books that do more to confuse people. Thanks for the feedback.
I've got an interview for a volunteer sound assistant position at our local (nonprofit) jazz club next week. I'm often the default sound girl unless there's an actual professional around. I've gleaned a lot about sound over the years, but I'm sure there are gaps!
Hey thats perfect. Any input you can add will be very useful. Sometimes I have a hard time explaining things. If anything is unclear to you that is a good indication I need to do a better job explaining and giving examples. Thanks for watching.
I'm the one band girlfriend they trust with sound, and I apparently did such a good job at their last show, they're considering LEGITIMATELY hiring me. XD
If one string on the bass guitar is louder than the others, you would send the signal through a: A. Compressor. B. Noise gate. C. Direct box. D. De-esser.
thank you so much Nate!!! this video series is exactly what i was looking for!!! thank you so much!!!! I'm From Pakistan and its really hard to come across institutes here, that teach sound engineering.
are those sega controllers? boy i havent seen those in like forever. nice video... i just started sound in church i used to sing and have basic info about musical instruments. i can appriciat good sound and good music... so i am hoping to learn everything from you.. thank alot
i started djinn in 2017 and one of my friends told his mate that i'm djinn and it's going to be my first time being in a band and they needed somebody do the live sound for the band
Hey John, Thanks for watching! There will be many more parts. I'm planning to make finishing this series a priority. Just need to get through the holidays first :-) For now if you have any questions feel free to ask them on the Live Sound 101 community page plus.google.com/b/101279002585355589068/communities/116548972681827767236
Watching this video creeped me out. A: I'm a Bass Player in a band doing all the live sound mixing and set up. B: I'm from Billerica originally just living out in WI at the moment. Overall good info though.
Bro i have a bachelor degree... But i want to apply for master in sound enggineering... Is I am eligible for master or otherwise I should go for bachelor in sound... Please help me out.
I just started to learn. My aim is to learn and know how to do basics in 1-2 month, like I was working 1 years as production assistant and pass through interview for job. is it possible?
+godzilla964 I've added you're comment to the Live Sound 101 Comment log. I hope to get to it in the next month or so. What specific math problems are you having trouble with?
+zimonslot Good question. I was working at the theater on campus at UMass Lowell as a student doing part time work. This was a super entry level position similar to working at the campus library, but WAY more fun. My boss at the time Casey managed the events at the theater, additionally Casey had connections with Bill Kenney Productions where he did a bunch of work. One day there was a really big show in town. I remember it like it was yesterday, Deaf Leopard and Brian Adams. Casey's boss, Bill needed a few extra hands and I was asked to come help out as a stage hand at my first real show at the Agganis Arena in Boston. I guess I wasn't a complete fool so I got asked back to help with the next show. Once my name and number was saved in the stage managers cell phone I just kept getting calls to do more work. I ended up working as a stage hand at almost every big show at the Tweeter Center in the summer of 2006. Even got my first "show call" when someone higher up the food chain called out sick. That's basically how it happened, before I made my exit into the world of commercial AV systems integration.
I'm not annoyed by it at all, but it could do if the volume was turned down a little more. I would definitly keep some sort of noise in the background, you know, to make yourself sound less lonely out there ;)
Thanks for stopping by Chuck. I hope you'll come back for more videos. I have many more coming up. I would also like to know your feedback. What was the most helpful about this video series? What topics should I cover next? Don't be afraid to be critical either. I want to improve.
Thanks for watching Vincent. I'm planning to do many more videos for this series. There is a lot to talk about when it comes to live sound. The Yamaha book is a great resource. What is your opinion on the background music in my video? Too distracting? or would you keep it?
I think it's fantastic what you are doing, I got into live sound 3-4 years ago and after a few months I was hooked and according to my teachers best in year group but then covid got me out of it for 2 years just learning studio but because of you trying to get back into it so what is your advice of getting back in
I notice that you this is almost six years old ~ I trust the info is still relevant? I'm a guitarist/hobbyist who is simply sooooo tired with the sound at our informal open mike stuff Therefore looking at getting my own mixer and necessary gear I DONT sing, but others do, so just trying to cater for the group ~ and have a bit of fun at the same time
i fucked up my potential career with fear of making the bands sound shit despite my employers saying i was really good, for beginners reading this don't be me and embrace it fully.
So this fuckin guy does a series of videos on live sound for beginners,,, and yaks his ass off for like 6 or 7 videos and never gets out a mixing board. What the fuck good is that ???
Thanks so much for this. I've "fallen into" running sound for my church in two days.

Tryna= not a real word. Grow up.
Cool! Thanks for watching! I always wondered if people notice the Sega controllers back there
I'm falling into sound and love. Your videos give me a fighting chance to do what I love. Thanks for your efforts!
good for you! If you have any questions as you learn about audio feel free to send me a message.

that is exactly to the letter how i went into 'audio engineering' so funny how you exactly described me, thanks for taking from your time to teach
Impressive. A lot of this is not necessarily stuff that's new to me, but the way that you deliver it just hits home. Thanks.
I'm the one band girlfriend they trust with sound, and I apparently did such a good job at their last show, they're considering LEGITIMATELY hiring me. XD
You go girl. We need more women in this industry.
Lo unico que puedo decir es muchas gracias por todo. Estos videos son unicos.

UnAuthorized Use.. Dope Name
Swwwwwwweeeeeeet video!
You could put subtitles in Spanish, it is something that is needed if the people who speak do not speak Spanish and can understand the video.
hello can I have your email.... I have some questions
Sound bites. haha I see what you did there. :-)
Haha when people play at Blossom in Cuyahoga Falls in Ohio, they just call it Cleveland.
I notice that you this is almost six years old ~ I trust the info is still relevant?
I'm a guitarist/hobbyist who is simply sooooo tired with the sound at our informal open mike stuff
Therefore looking at getting my own mixer and necessary gear
I DONT sing, but others do, so just trying to cater for the group ~ and have a bit of fun at the same time
Nice video!

i fucked up my potential career with fear of making the bands sound shit despite my employers saying i was really good, for beginners reading this don't be me and embrace it fully.
Yup the tech guy who can't play well becomes the sound buy by default 🙂
So this fuckin guy does a series of videos on live sound for beginners,,, and yaks his ass off for like 6 or 7 videos and never gets out a mixing board.
What the fuck good is that ???
I didn’t get anything from this video. Ten minutes of someone talking. SMDH
