As a sounds guy myself I can say you explained everything clearly
Thanks!
To the audio nitpickers with some things I misspoke:
You’re correct and I misspoke. This system is *technically* not DANTE. It is AES based. The difference being AES runs single point to point with Ethernet, while Dante runs to a network with Ethernet.
HOWEVER, this system can (and has) been converted to Dante systems for other gigs I used an X32 system. You need special gear to convert, but the concept is the same when you boil it down - you are sending and receiving audio signals via Ethernet. The fundamental concept is almost exactly the same.
So yes, I admit the misspoken phrase, Dingbatz is AES based, but Dante systems also require Ethernet to communicate with the stage box and network, which is exactly what the system here does.
A collab drum video would be amazing. For each instrument actually it would be awesome to see. I understand that could be tricky to coordinate with the venue and musicians but I'd love to watch it!
I can basically come in whenever the venue has an off day. Just need to coordinate that schedule with the musician.
holy shit, I grew up going to shows at Dinbatz and now am a live sound engineer myself. Love that you're doing these videos in a place I would still call home.
I'm glad I stumbled on this channel. I learned live mixing in church many years ago and got pretty decent helping our arts guild put on a monthly show. That was entirely on analog equipment so seeing how the digital stuff works has been mind blowing. Makes me wanna get back into it.
best demo video so far. well explained.
Great video, great info! Love all your videos. Thanks, Chris!
Loved the explanation of the DI Box. I put one on my pedal board because of you.
As you should. Not only will it improve your tone signal but it will make FOH guys happy that all they need to do is connect a cable to your DI and they don’t need to worry about your signal.
Loved this video!! Would also love to see the advance view you were talking about sometime in the future :D. Awesome job as always keep it up!!
🤘 appreciate it.
Thanks Chris, well done

The buttons that reduces the level of the signal are also called pads. example: a -10 db pad
Excellent Video! Very informative! Cheers from Brazil.
Thank you Chris! appreciate the effort here with a bit of basic crash course on the X32.
I’ll create some advanced mixing content for sure.
@@chrishammillaudio Thank you! btw I'm from the Philippines and sharing your channel to my friends as well , your tutorials and setup really help us to understand everything. We appreciate your effort!
Glad my tutorials helped. Cheers!
thank you for this!
My pleasure!
And make sure you have a power strip from 1982 on stage. Just poking fun brother, love your videos!
Hey now, that power strip from 1982 was factory sealed! It was in mint condition!
Hope to learn more advanced skills/tips such as compressor especially!
Pretty neat😊
Nice video with great explanations. Looking forward to your next uploads.
Greetings from Germany :)
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed.
Id volunteer if i wasnt in Colorado lol. Nice job man!
First i thought "ewwww behringer..." but i really started to love this console. You`ve got so much tech integrated that you mostly dont need a side chain. There so much you can do with it and makes it easier to hold Oversight over everything. 😁
If this console is good enough for national touring acts to use for their front of house or monitor systems, it’s good enough for us.
@@chrishammillaudio its absolutely its money worth 👍 Even with the snakes... you replace a large chest of cables with a "skimpy " network cable
Helpful
Thanks for the video! Personally I'm not involved in live sound and I don't plan on it any time soon but I'm very curious; I've never touched a console but I'm pretty comfortable in Ableton and have a half-decent understanding of audio engineering. I would really love to see you go more in depth on everything you do, especially a more detailed breakdown of the adjustments you make during the set. It was nice to see you break down the layout of the console and talk a bit about how you have your sends set up. Your channel is my favorite live sound content on here. Cheers
I’d be happy to make a more detailed process explaining what and why I do what I do.
good video, thorough but not over-splaining
🤘
6:00 I bet most bands know this already, some might not. DO NOT go over your set time especially if you're early on the bill. Don't fk around when you're supposed to be getting your gear out of the way, basically just be courteous to those you're sharing the stage with and it will go a LONG way.
That’s a “golden rules” video I’m going to make for both bands and sound guys.
Excellent video. Is “front of stage” also “up stage” and “back of stage” also “down stage”?
front of the stage is down stage, back of the stage is up stage. Its easier to think of it as a slope. You wouldn't be able to see the back of the stage if the front of the stage was "up". the terms also came around because theater stages were literally sloped for the exact reason of the audience being able to see the whole stage.
As someone whos worked on analogue, digital, and hybrid systems I understand the advantage of each. I just wanted to ask quickly if youve ever heard of a mixer with a fully analogue signal path but digitally controlled automation? I feel like that would be the ideal system right?
Analogs point is to not have digital automation. I use a Tascam model 24 to record. Nice warm analog sounding pres with full digital conversion.
Hey you mentioned guitar players using a Kemper would need a DI box. All of the venues I've played at just give me an XLR cable to plug into the main output on my Kemper. I always assumed it just connected to the FoH stage box, but are you saying it's actually going to a DI box first?
No. What I am saying is if you go direct from any amp source, there is a chance you might need a DI box. Especially if the sound coming from your amp is not the cleanest of signals. I would invest in a DI box for yourself anyways.
Most of the time any modern DI amps for guitars sound just fine on their own, but you never know.
Can you explain how you are using DANTE? Like, how it's implemented and why you use it. Maybe what benefits you receive by using it?
I explain it in the video. One cable instead of many XLRs, data flows fast and it’s a clean setup.
@@chrishammillaudio Oh, I thought there was more to it. Thanks
It's not Dante, it is AES50. AES 50 just combines 48 signals per direction on one ethernet cable instead of a big analog snake
The concept is exactly the same - using Ethernet to connect audio sources for a stage. You can take an AES system and make it Dante with some conversion gear. The concept of running signals via Ethernet remain the same.
Hello :
I have a little mixer question for ya.
I have a small mixer for my live performance percussion playing.
The mixer has fx but once you choose an effect, that’s what goes to all the channels and you can only control how much or how little.
I need to put multi fx on all channels and on some of the channels, I need different fx than the other channels.
How can I achieve this ?
Is there a live performing mixer that can do this or do I need to chain pedals together and connect to the aux send of the mixer ?
( I need a small mixer that can handle my 6 mic inputs.)
I would love to be able to put a simple reverb on say…my congas, but then a flanged wilder reverb on my timbale. Those are the kind of things I’m trying to achieve while playing live.
Thanks for your help !
Behringer makes a compact version of the X32 that you can snag.
Mackies make excellent analog mixers.
I personally use a Tascam Model 24 - that allows you to send aux to an affect.
Bruh, I stopped doing hip hop shows too, probably for the same reasons lol
You don’t like your equipment being smashed, you and the venue being disrespected and your safety being threatened because a rival “artist” decided to hire a hit squad to shoot up the club because the artist performing just happened to be born on the wrong block?
That SCREAMS happy working environment to me!
if i wanted to be a sound guy for a live music venue what would i have to do to achieve that

Stage time is just a suggestion for the band from where I’m from.
They never even prepared for any shit even when there’s competent stage manager
Cut their set and tell them times up. They’ll learn fast.
Never once have I heard front stage or back stage, always upstage (further from audience) or downstage (closer to audience).
Only heard those terms once, but they are commonly used too.
In the small city where I work most engineers at the rock clubs also work at the big historic theater - for lighting cues and theater stage plotting I know its up and down, maybe less so in rock venues but we all just transfer the same lingo we use in the theater.
I come from the Hip Hop culture, and I don’t like running sound for rap shows. Especially with local rappers.
The stories I have 😂 I refuse to ever work them unless they’re older crowds.
Dating yourself? I just bought a 4 port router for my living room setup to sub to our wireless router. Cat5 still the best
Perhaps?
What is the point of a stereo delay when your speakers are mono?
The PA is not in mono…
@@chrishammillaudio ah, nevermind then! I must've misunderstood something you said earlier, I forget what you said but maybe that your PAs are one mix and the Sub another or something. I can see myself mishearing that. I'm just starting to learn this stuff in college and I'm wary of using anything stereo whenever people are going to be sitting right up against the PAs
Do I NEED to go to school for this or can I grow a career without a degree?
No.
What about using an IEM?
Pretty straight forward. Connect a bus output on the snake to the IEM receiver and make sure the channel on the receiver and actual IEMs match. Bands are free to bring their IEMs. We do not have house IEMs.
Is DANTE the same as ULTRALINK?
No
How do I eliminate feedback if I have many mic ?????
Use an EQ to find the source of the feedback and cut that frequency on the instrument causing the feedback.
@@chrishammillaudiocan I just eq my monitor output, if have feedback, cause my stage have 16 mic lol
Where is this venue?
letmegooglethat.com/?q=dingbatz
Why is 0db called unity?
The output of the signal at that level matches the level of the input of the source. Every piece of gear is different but that’s the theory.
part 2?
No need for a part 2 when I link in the description every advanced term you’ll ever hear.
Like I said in the video, if you guys want a demonstration of what I look for in a mix I need volunteers.
sorry, my mistake I meant what you said about second video where you who eq,effect, ect..@@chrishammillaudio
why do you refuse to work hip hop shows
Too many instances where my life was threatened, the “artists” and crowds were disrespectful to me and the venue and several goons in squads tried to bring guns into the venue, among other instances of not feeling safe working. Brawls and fights breaking out are far too common.
Also, promoters not being able to organize anything properly and shows going several hours over schedule because “artists” can’t be bothered to show up on time.
What’s up with the hip hop shows? Lol.
They suck, the “artists” never listen to any rules of the venue, some have threatened me and oh, sometimes they bring guns.
F that. I want to feel safe when I work.
I was gonna ask the same thing 😂. At first I was offended but then I said let me see why. And there it is SMH WE GOTTA STOP THIS FOOLISHNESS MY PEOPLE ❤
HEY YOU DISSING DIME!?? ;) hehe
😂 more so the hack guitar players who want to have his tone so badly.
