- Today we are going to mod out this Dreamcast with some of the best mods on the market, the DCHDMI and GDEMU! I was so impressed with the mods, I brought in DatGameCollector to help me discuss the mods and provide some additional commentary on the video comparison between DCHDMI and other solutions out there! This is on modding episode you dont want to miss!
We also take a look and do a full video comparison between the DCHDMI vs composite vs Toro upscaled to the framemeister
link to DGCs channel - / @datgamecollector
The DCHDMI offers:
The DCHDMI outputs native digital HDMI video and audio. It can output 480p and interger scaled 960p. 1080p is also supported (960p with borders) for pixel perfect presentation with the correct aspect ratio. Scanlines, In Game Reset, and WiFi Updates, to name a few things!
Games featured: Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, & G Darius

Thanks for having me buddy. This was very fun to make with you. Can't wait to get my hands on that bad boy.
Thank you for all the help with this and definitely looking forward to more collabs in the future! I hope everyone checks you out!
@@RockerGaming that'd be cool but doubt it. 😂
Some incredible work with those 2 mods! The picture quality is stunning! This will become more popular as people are watching this and they will want to get their hands on this! Can't wait to watch your input on it DGC! Great video and keep up the good work!
Yea dan ill be testing it more.
Dan, hard to disagree with you, the picture is really stunning! I'm very excited myself to see what DGC adds to this as well!
Awesome video. I installed a GDEMU in my Dreamcast. I think I need to install the DCHDMI too. I was think about painting my orange with black buttons.
I think you need to do it too! The GDEMU is great and really easy to install.
You know I love my orange, I say make it happen and share it with me when you do!
that DC HDMI is sweet! makes a huge difference! good video!
I couldnt agree more, its really kind of shocking how big of a difference it made! Thanks for commenting and you and I are still going to do a collab here soon!
It is incredible to see the clarity that device gives it. It is a bit too pricey for my blood, but maybe in the future I will get one eventually. I recently got a 128gb micro SD card for my GDEMU, and already got 60 games loaded up on it, with room to spare, still have around 60gb free.
Also, the official Bleem discs that aren't supported with GDEMU look to be getting ALL protections removed! This means they will finally work on GDEMU and we can possibly make self booting images of MGS, GT2 and Tekken 3!

At least you showed off the Bleem beta emu running G-Darius. It is crazy how all these years later, the Dreamcast was the only console with hardware accelerated PSX games up until recently, a friend of mine is working on a Hardware accelerated PSX emu for the original Xbox. It promises Bleem level of improvements to games.
Now if we can just get a better PSX emulator for the PS3 that does the same, I will be in heaven!
Thank you very much for dropping some knowledge here, I am not the MOST knowledgeable when it comes time to all the things happening in the DC scene so I appreciate that. I wish the bleem beta was a bit more comprehensive in the games it supported, but at least G-Darius works as that is a pretty good 2.5D shooter!
I am going to need to get me a 128GB card next, lol. Thanks again for checking out the video and commenting!
I also recommend the GDIshrink tool. As the name suggests, it can shrink the 1.1 GB GDI files by removing unused data from it, resulting in smaller GDI files. Some of the NTSC-J shooters for example only take up less than 200 MB instead of 1.1 GB this way.
Hey PD-Bruv so much going on I gotta break this down into chunks. SKILLS ON TOAST!!!!
What an awesome collab with Datgamecollector. First off the bat your video editing skills are getting so good and Datgamecollector is spot on when he says this is your best. Music sounded amazing through my surround speakers. Then the super solder skills!!!! I love the kit you've modded in, this guys is the future of retro gaming don't you think, having a wifi updatable firmware in a retro console, its mad. The Dreamcast console you modded looks beautiful and pristine. What an amazing picture, like diamond-cut resolution. It looked so clean and crisp and the colours!!!! Fantastic job!!!!!! Loved the vid mate ❤️ great start to 2019.
It was really a wonderfully done video.
Got carried away mate sorry I’ve toned it down a bit 🤭
John, much appreciated! I can tell you have spent quite a bit of time on editing this bad boy, but at the end of the day I learned a bit more about editing and I can implement that going forward. It also gave me some ideas for how to present some of the mods I do on a go forward basis.
I couldnt agree more with you about wifi firmware upgrades, I mean its was pretty amazing. Think how seamless that will be going forward and the guys already told me they are working on more features, which is fantastic! I can hardly wait to see what they come up with and hopefully I can cover a Dreamcast again here in the near future, lets just say I already have plans for the next one ;)
Video quality is amazing... makes me want to keep the console for myself, haha, dont tell @datgamecollector!!
Thanks DGC!
When modding this bad boy don't overlook the basics. A Battery holder mod for example. Super simple ,easy, and cheap and makes for easy battery change down the road.
Brian, solid advice here. Let there be no doubt that battery is pesky and its nice to be able to easily replace it. There is a couple more mods I know DGC is planning to do, including a fan mod, I think this is on his list too.
This sounds so neat! I want this mod done to my Dreamcast as soon as they come back in stock again. The option for HQ2X filtering is just like a cherry on top of this!
I hope someone makes an HDMI mod for the PS2 at some point in time with an ODE too if it's possible.
Oh yeah this video resolution is more than fantastic it is just wonderful
Couldnt agree more, I undersold how good it looks. I was talking to DGC on the phone before I sent him the video and I was having trouble finding the words to describe how good it looked!
Great collaboration you guys. Very cool dreamcast modding project
Thanks dude! she turned out really nice!
Great team up and great seeing the work done to the Dreamcast!! It legit thrills me to see just how good our retro gaming CAN look after mods like this!
Thanks! VERY WELL SAID, its crazy how impressive some of these mods are!!
I wish I was experienced enough in soldering or hell even knew someone here in TX so I could get this done
Ita really a great mod I highly recommend it. Even I'd you have to ship the console out it's worth it IMO
Lovelorn88, did you find someone? I just ordered my DCHDMI plus extras with the idea I would do the otherd as a side job. I'm an electronics tech for a company in NY and solder all day and night. Let me know if you're interested.
Awesome work I was excited to see what you created since the tease yesterday lol.
Thank you for checking it out and commenting! I couldn't help it, I felt the need to tease it, lol
HDMI powered Dreamcast huh? Sweet! Looking forward to DGC's breakdown on this once he gets his hands on it.
Those FPGA'S are amazing. I wonder if we will ever see an HDMI solution for the Saturn in the future. I guess only time will tell.
Agree with you! Lets just a little birdie has been whispering in Citrus3000psi's ear that we need a Saturn version, lol. He is a bit backlogged with some other FPGA based HDMI mods, but lets just say its on his radar!
Not a big Dreamcast guy,but I had fun watching this!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Its incredible what these FPGA based solutions can do! We need similar features 960P and 1080P for the GC!!
Another great video! Wouldn't expect any less from you :D
Thanks you very much, I really appreciate that!!!
I never expected a Dreamcast to be Modded. Great Work Man!
Thank you sir! I want to mix it up and do more and different consoles this year!
@@RockerGaming I'm sure you can pull it off
I am going to sure try, I have a few consoles in my fleet with no mods done to them, time for that to change, lol.
@@RockerGaming lol
I wonder how the HD15-2-Scart + RetroTINK 5x Pro compares to this. Because the HDMI mod looks very clean and crisp.
Love the clean work and that's a badass set up.. nice work 👏
Thank you sir! I can hardly wait till they make one of these for the Saturn :)
@@RockerGaming yes!!! Hope someone is working on it
amen brother!
Nice touch with g Darius at the end 👌looks to play well with bleem. I've seen harmful park run well too!👍
Thank you Jonzini!! Really? Sounds like I need to pick that up too. I hear good things about that game, but it has gotten crazy expensive as of late!
@@RockerGaming it's a good game it out parodys Parodius (if that makes sense) 😊
Man they're so hard to find & get done lol id pay $300 to have my Dreamcast modded 🤣 so nostalgic
Awesome, can you do a video on how to get Bleem to emulate all PSone games on the DC? I'm ordering the HDMI kit tonight and getting a GDEMU off of Ebay, would love to use the DC to play all my PSone games. Thanks!
I appreciate the darkstalkers music
I'll be waiting when you get 1 mil subs and remind you when you had 1k
Amen brother, I hope that day comes :)
#4:33 -- Stock fan , dead battery, power supply produceds head case of 12V line
wow! the colors looks incredible.
Hello fantastic video.
This mod allows you to see the aspect at 16:9?
Thank you
Nice, may have to do this at some point over my Akura box.
Thats what I am saying, you should absolutely make it happen!
Not a fan of GDEMU, I much prefer USBGDROM in every way.
Great video BTW.
I hear really good things about the USBGDROM, I need to check it out. The set-up of the GDEMU is a bit clunky for sure.
@@RockerGaming Yeah, USBGDROM fully supports drag and drop, so there's no need to mess around building an index/list everytime you add a game like GDEMU.
ALso just having a USB port opens up a lot of options like using a hard disk.
GDEMU isn't bad, but considering how difficult it is to get (unless you don't mind picking a chinese knock off from ebay) I don't see any reason to pick it up anymore.
I appreciate that, yeah I 100% agree with you, the index system is clunky for sure. My preference would be drag and drop for sure. I will have to pick one up here at some point and do a comparison between the two. I am not a fan of the Chinese knockoffs... while I am not sure I agree with the creators selling practices, I dont agree with copying his hard work more.
Thanks for pointing that out, I am going to pick one up for sure!!
Where can I find a FAQ on the HDMI MOD? Where to find a honest seller of all that is needed for the MOD and where to send your Dreamcast to have someone honest to install it including cutting out the holes in the Dreamcast that won't take you money and run leaving you out of you money and Dreamcast?
Also I heard or read somewhere or saw it in a video that some Clone GDEMUs cause a no audio problem with the HDMI MOD and would need to know how to identify which Clone GDEMUs are effected.
Also if you have a GDEMU you need to add an additional mod in order to get that button that emulates changing Discs to work with the HDMI MOD?
Been a while man, hope everything is good over there. I’m still using the hell out of that modded GC. But ... how much to have you send me a modded DC? It’s a must have.
As soon as I get paid I'm going to order one, I really want to see what this looks like running through an Mcable.
Hell yeah dude! It's totally worth it, this is a great mod!
Great video as always!! Impressive collection that datgamecollector!
Thank you! Thats how I knew he was the right person to bring in to discuss the games and do a video comparison! Massive DC collection!
But no RGB LED lights in the controller ports and no custom led for the power? Wish there was a way to link the DCHDMI Wifi to the Dreamcast itself.
Haha, there could be more in the future! Dude, that is an amazing idea! It would be amazing if there was a way to make that work! Could you imagine if you could do that with all these FPGA based mods? You could have online play come to life on all these consoles, it would be awesome!
Um, you actually can build something called a DreamPi, which is a Raspberry Pi, connected to a USB Fax Modem, which can run a custom image that converts the dialup modem signal into something your modern broadband internet can understand. Hell, I just got a Pi Zero, and the USB fax modem, a mini wifi dongle and had most of the other parts laying around. The Pi, modem and wifi dongle cost right at about $20.
I am going to be installing my pi internally, and having a wifi enabled Dreamcast.
Check out my thread, I posted a lot of the links you need to build one yourself. And the Pi Zero is so small it will easily fit inside the Dreamcast with room to spare! I posted images of other peoples modded consoles in my thread for an idea of what I will be doing, but I am still waiting on all the parts to arrive from slow China.
dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11409
So I did not know that the pi zero would work. To be honest the only game I would want to play online would be PSO and then I would want to play 1 and 2 plus on the GameCube.
Thanks, I am going to check this out for sure! I agree with Moandain, PSO is where its at. I didnt play it back in the day, but would love to give it a go today. Pretty sure there is a pretty big scene for both the DC and GC for PSO still.
Also, some 20 games have been revived and brought back online, and more are coming back all the time. You can see a complete list here and the upcoming ones. It is almost the full list of games, and way better compatibility than the BBA!
www.dreamcastlive.net/games.html
You have to compare toro vga not toro rgb scart, that's not fair. Try to compare toro vga via atlona pro 2 or pro 5 up-scaler, that's my setup and It's waaaay better the one you shown like "Toro Output" in your video.
The installing instructions say if you connect the DC HDMI to the GDEMU reset, you will LED function. What does that mean?
What's that upside down 8GB card for at the beginning for?
Simply beautiful
Thank you very much Brady!!!
So I'm having issues with the GDEMU, GDi games that have a gdi file and 3 tracks work with zero issues. BUT games that have a gdi file and like 20 tracks seem to not play music during the game. Mortal kombat gold, Kiss Psycho circus just being a few. And I have also tried the CDi files of those same games and I still seem to have the same issues.. games like sonic Adventure and crazy taxi are fine though? Those 2 games for example just have 3 tracks. Does anyone might have a solution? I currently have a replacement on the way from Amazon just incase my board is defected but that doesnt make since, I'm thinking it's a error on my end
I don't but I have noticed it can be very finicky at times
Omg I would pay out the ass for one of those do you know when or where they will be available?
They are available for pre-order now! Check out Citrus3000psi's website. Highly recommend this mod. I instantly got another kit for myself after wrapping up this mod. Here is a link to his site: shop.dansprojects.com/video-output-upgrades.html
When are people going to upload 960p footage ??? - instead of the windowed 1080p
The 960P wouldnt look any different than the 1080p windowed. In order to not stretch the aspect ratio the 960P video would need to be fit into the 1080p video.
@@RockerGaming - I was under the impression that the 960p mode would be full-screen top and bottom / so is the 480p mode ?
Are you telling me that every mode is Windowed ?
I have some issues, I have more than 50% X on the test screen... I don’t know how to change that
Take a look at the following link and search for the word heart. Then see the picture and then match the solder points to your x's. www.dansprojects.com/dchdmi_install.html
Can you recommend more Bleemcast games?!!
Here have a look at this, this is the compatibility list: www.whipassgaming.com/genesisreviews/Bleemcast/bleemcastcompatibility.htm
Hello, I followed several tutorials to the letter, started again and again, and again, and each time I launch a game ... "please insert a disc", do you have an idea of the problem? thanks in advance (GDEmu 5.15b) ( - google traduction)
Are you using a genuine gdemu?
I thought was composhit vs digitized crap!? Don't diss ma Toro! Plug VGA instead!
EDIT: Also you're playing the ol G-Darius Bleem!cast selfboot over GDEMU? Din't know can
Haha, composhit is absolutely right! Heck yeah dude, thats exactly what it is and it looks damn good, right! The FMV runs slow and is laggy, but the game itself plays really well!
Can I install the DC HDMI, to use on my physical games to play on my Dreamcast? I appreciate all your responses.
Btw. What’s the name of that shootem up game on the PS1. It looks awesome!
Yes you can. That is no problem at all!
Most importantly does Bangai O work with these mods?
I have not tried it specifically, but it should!
@@RockerGaming Thanks.
you pulled the mini hdmi cable and reversed it right?
Haha, sure did! I couldnt plug it perfectly first take 😂😂
Awesome
Thanks David!!
Could the programmer even see the software as good as it is now??
does it work for multi disc games? (GDEMU)
Sure does!
Where can I download that remix of Ducktales - The Moon?
Hey Ryan, There should be a link to it in the description and you should be able to download it off soundcloud. Its a great remix!
@@RockerGaming Roger, thanks.
@@GoatTheGoat no problem!
I need the full screen
crazy how much they want for a board that costs about £1 maybe 5 after being made, but components in bulk order are legit pennies
There are 2 major dollar costs associated with something like this 1 - the custom flex cable which is easily in the 15$ and the 2 - the cyclone fpga which is in the same $15 to $30 neighborhood. You also have to consider what a fab charges to assemble boards which isnt cheap maybe another $5 to $10 per.
While I think they do well on this there is nothing stopping you from making your own. This is all open source.
@@RockerGaming still not worth 100 plus lol
@@Millzieeeee mate I disagree if you like the DC its worth it all day!
RockerGaming im using the vga cable out to a cheap vga to hdmi adapter and as far as i can see from tour videos theres no difference , though id have to have physicals of each side by side on decent monitors to say for sure , id never pay £130 for that alone
RockerGaming its fine to have a different opinion btw haha im not fighting you here i just dont agree to the pricing its a cash grab knowing those who love their console and prob spend £130 all day on rarer games will buy it , but not me haha , ide mod , vga cable and vga to hdmi upscaler , no visible delay what so ever either before i hear that one haha
Wait does the DC HDMI still work with disc's?
It sure does, I just opted to pull the drive for a GDEMU.
How much to mod a Dreamcast?
Yo, what is that Mega Man song?!!!
I have all the music listed in the description, check it out and support those artists!!
@@RockerGaming I checked, thats the one I couldn't find though :O.
@@RockerGaming at 12:58 , thats Mega Man music, from Mega Man 2, but there is no Mega Man 2 listed so, thats why I was asking.
:D
Thanks! I appreciate you checking it out and commenting :D
Make me a friend doubts it works the wifi for the games online
I agree it absolutely doesnt, but it would be amazing if some how it could be adapted to work online with the wifi
can you post a link for the dc hdmi and gdemu
No problem, here is a link to the dc hdmi - shop.dansprojects.com/dchdmi-pre-order.html
the GDEMU can be found here. gdemu.wordpress.com/ the ordering process for the GDEMU is very finicky and kinda a pain in the butt...
@@RockerGaming Thank you so much, i will be doing a complete system mod with these items plus replacing the fan with a noctua fan and replacing the internal battery.
@@RockerGaming have thought about the DREAM PSU mod?
can i play online games with the wifi
That would be amazing if you could! Unfortunately it is only for wifi updating the software right now.
Gdemu or usb gdrom?
If you have your choice $ no option I would go usb gdrom, but for this project i choose gdemu
I need GD emu and hdmi mod!
Heck yeah! Such great mods!
needs more LEDS
I agree! More will be coming, I think DGC will be adding those in!
Dchdmi is always sold out 😢
too many commercials
Dan, thanks for calling that out... YT added a bunch of ads to my video. I just removed them. Hopefully that makes it better! Thanks again!
