Perfect timing on this video. I just finished the install on mine over the weekend, and I love it. There's a web interface too, if you have a GDEMU or USB-GDROM, you need to configure the reset line (if connected) via the web console. Another commenter mentioned the HQ2X firmware, that's out now.
Just a few observations: Under output resolution, VGA is digital not analog but displays a proper aspect ratio. 480p is digital but displays an improper aspect ratio. 1080p is a very important feature as it remove the displays scaling from 960p to 1080p. The 240p setting aligns the screen on some 240p homebrew games. To be able to play 480i or 240p games the cable detect mode needs to be set. There is now an hq2x firmware that smooths the games.
One thing i notice is that the 480P mod with mCable compared to the VGA with mCable is that it's easier to see darker details on the 480P mod. For example, it's easier to see the details in Ryo's hair at 18:46 like the lines in his hair while said details aren't visible with the VGA and mCable.
DCHDMI has HQ2X anti-aliasing available in newest firmware .... BUT from what I know it’s only applicable to 960p and 1080p modes. Not in 480p mode. What I think may be best option for those of us with MCable gaming editions .... is it DCHDMI could somehow either apply edge smoothing of HQ2X in 480p mode, or if it can output HQ2X-smoothed 720p mode with some of the Dreamcast titles which had native resolution lower than 480p
Hey Adam, just wanted to let you know I recently got a Japanese Dreamcast for cheap after being inspired by your videos! Looking forward to getting back into retro gaming!
Man I watched Madlittlepixel showcase this thing. I don't even own a Dreamcast but I love retro gaming like all of us. So exiting the time where in. I'm 39 and had a Master System 2 then Megadrive my bro and I got when it came out. Was a MK pack. Had an Intellevision originally and got a C64 too which was fun at the time. I was thinking the other day if I was say 45 or 50 or just didn't get into gaming I'd be spewing lol So thankful my dad was smart and got us into them, where so lucky. I'll get a Dreamcast ASAP. I only need that, Saturn and N64 to pretty much have the main systems at my disposal. Really enjoy your vids too m8! Really thorough content! :)
i just sent mine off to have it modded for this. i'm ok with the jagginess, i have an ultra hdmi n64 and it's the same way, it's so clear that it shows everything instead of some of the pixelation being hidden by such low resolution like we got with composite
Hey Adam, a couple of things about the DCHDMI: 1. Apparently DCHDMI displays the dreamcast in the correct aspect ratio. It seems VGA boxes display the DC in a thinner aspect ratio than 4:3 2. There will be a smoothing option (currently on beta) that will help with the jaggies. I'm not an official source by any means, but these are my findings based on reviews/research
This is true. I use the Gekko and the aspect ratio is thinner. I believe the native Dreamcast VGA output is 720x480 but only showing 640 lines within the 720 frame. The VGA boxes truncate those 640 lines resulting in a thinner image.
@@PvtHudson I can also confrim this. I have the Gekko and the Akura box and the aspect ratio was always a bit off. I got this thing and man oh man is it nice.
The problem with the mCable; while it does smooth out jaggies, it also can crush detail in certain scenes. Also, the DCHDMI can do a 4x scale on games like Bangai-O and Last Blade 2 if you set the video mode settings to "cable detect" and if you have a modern HDTV that can handle the wonky refresh rate that gets spit out (most 4k TVs can).
Hey Adam, Air Force Delta works if you change video mode settings to Cable Detect. I have 2 dchdmis, 1 with a gdemu and 1 with usb-gdrom, so I can confirm compatibility. Great video!
I'm more interested in the rgb and component cables Retro Gaming Cables has coming. Might just do component rather than rgb into Frameister and trying to figure that out.
Bones Jackson same, I’m dying for a component cable. I still enjoy playing my dreamcast on my Trinitron and prefer the CRT over LCD screen. Not to mention lightgun games are useless with newer monitors. After hearing Adam talk about the gekko over the last few months I have really been interested in that however. I have a backup Dreamcast that I could always put on the flatscreen. Best of both worlds. Currently I run s-video from the vga box to my trinitron. I’ve never actually played using real VGA mode. I only got the box years ago because there wasn’t a quality s-video cable back then.
@@NodakSavage I have S video to Frameister but for some reason it wont save the settings. It's so annoying that I really don't want to play because of that. I'm not an expert so my settings are based off online. I'm thinking these component cables will be easier. They have a switch for VGA mode too. Should be a nice easy solution.
@@bonesjackson81 I know this comment is old but do you have an SD card in the fraimeister? I have 6 profiles just load and go. I can keep adding profiles.
I saw the Digital Foundry DF Retro on it and comparing it to other options and was blown away by how good it looked. I've been using the Toro box going into a FrameMeister with FireBrand X's custom profile which always looked very nice to me, was definitely a significant improvement over VGA going straight into my TV, but I definitely intend to get an DCHDMI mod when I can afford it.
They are working on an AA firmware update according to their website (it's called HQ2x or something along those lines) so I would expect it in the near future.

Awesome video Adam, it's always nice to see new things with the Dreamcast. Was the battery dead in the Dreamcast console you showcased in the video? Or is there no need for a console battery anymore with these mods? I seen that 1998 date.
The battery is rechargeable, it just needs to be played to refuel. Problem is, they don't last long. It can be replaced, but will just happen again over time.
I could use a few fresh batteries myself. I know you mentioned that you have to send that Dreamcast back to VideoGamesNewYork but I would be curious to take a look underneath the hood. VGNY has a great website. The 3D printing part for the GDEMU was a good idea compared to a previous design that I've seen. Having the SD card slot where the CD rests in the console is a lot better. The thing with the GDEMU is where do you get the roms to load onto it and how? I would want every Dreamcast game although I do prefer physical media. On another note do you think SEGA would ever make another console after the Genesis mini that could play every Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and Sega Dreamcast game in 1080p? Would Sega games on those consoles become expensive as Neo Geo games? If Sega doesn't really want to be in the new console business then why not improve on what they already have by having their retro consoles rebuilt in HD for modern displays for the hardcore fans?

Hey Adam I do have the money to do the mod but right now I'm currently running the Dreamcast with the Akura HDMI box with a framemister. Do you recommend just getting a Mcable to accompany this set up or get the DCHDMI mod?
I wouldn't use the Framemeister for HDMI input, but that's me. If I could, I'd use the 480p mode of this console with the mCable and call it a day. But, that comes down to your budget and how particular you are.
As much as I love this idea ... He's selling it for $500 USD on his website. I'm Canadian. I can't justify that price when there are equally reliable methods with external boxes. Granted, maybe not AS great ... But certainly cheaper. I'd rather just use a VGA box than pay an obscene amount of money for that. I had my GC modded with the GCHD and it cost me $300 USD. I don't know what these guys are thinking with those prices. I mean hell ... You can buy a Dreamcast for $60 USD, replace the capacitors for $20, put a new power supply in it for $40, and use the Akura from Beharbros for $70. All of this will get you something very similar, while also replacing essential parts of your console, still for significantly less money than this invasive mod. I just can't justify it. Feel free to hate on me, community. Lol
Adam, are you going to review/check out the new dcdigital hw2 from Pixel FX? There is a new 1440p mode here and a ton additional new features! I have a dreamconn+ and dcdigital hw2 and that issue is still present unfortunately.
I don't get how 480p mode is the best, according to their website 480p produces a squashed image and it exists for homebrew titles. Can you please clarify on this? The aspect ratio does look weird on my unit.
The Dreamcast only natively supported 480i and 480p. Between the two, 480p is the better one. The games were developed with that in mind. When the DCDigital forces them to run in a higher resolution, it tends to expose some of the visual issues that were hidden in a lower resolution. If you're having issues with it being squashed, I imagine there's an issue with your TV or monitor not being able to understand the resolution correctly.
Crazy to see more methods of getting a better video signal out of the Dreamcast. I only wonder now what the peak/best way to get the best resolution from your Dreamcast will be going forward. This new mod seems to be getting close to it, but not yet.
I’ve never tried vga mode. I know you’ve stated many times in previous vids how the gekko and M are your way to go. You’d even choose this over VGA on a CRT monitor? Like I said I haven’t used the true vga mode before, really like the gekko and m cable idea but I know my light gun games are basically useless at that point. Currently I use my vga box in s-video mode to my Trinitron KV-27FS100

acedotcom Air Force delta runs perfectly fine on the dchdmi. You have to set the dchdmi to cable select in the video settings of the osd. (Or hold down on the dpad when turning the console on)
Adam Koralik all non vga games (15khz) games will not work with the force vga mode. Force vga mode just makes the Dreamcast “think” a vga cable is plugged in. If the game won’t boot in force vga mode. Switch to cable detect.
People who can have a CRT TV with scart in should stick with it. I tried VGA, I tried HDMI, I even tried 1080p emulation and if there is one thing that was obvious, is that having the "cleanest" experience possible is not the best. I always go back to my scart CRT TV. I know it's not that common in the US but if you have enough space, you should défintely use that kind of TV for every game in this generation and before.
Next thing to try for me : mapped textures and better antialiasing via emulator + this www.ebay.fr/itm/Scaler-video-converter-HDMI-to-SCART-MINI-HDMI-convertisseur-SCART-numerique/401710322313?hash=item5d87cd1289:g:RiIAAOSwA0JcaoTa going to my CRT TV.
heh Maybe Adam could have come to a definitive conclusion about DCHDMI if the hq2x anti-aliasing filter that is now available existed at the time he did the review.
Adam, my man, I just installed a GDEMU on my (american, but i'm in pal region, italy, it was the less expensive choice) Dreamcast. It's MINDBLOWINGly FAST and easy to use. I'm using a standard VGA cable for my dreamcast. So Clean. Is this a lot better?
@@AdamKoralik thanks Adam I got one ordered I was going to ask what's the best thing to use for the dchdmi with the m classic just an adapter which adapter would you recommend?
@@dreamcast3607 Um, he problem with the DCHDMI is that it uses micro HDMI, so you'll need an adapter to go to full size. From there, just connect the mClassic.
i Do not own a dreamcast never owned a dreamcast dont intend to own a dremcast yet i watch all these videos what spell has this bearded wizard cast on me.
There's no matter of opinion man, if you're a purist, the DCHDMI is the way to go, it taps directly on the digital output of the GPU, c'mon. And the new HQ2X update offers antialiasing... so, no brainer.
Using an OSSC(set to 480p "in sampler" mode) with a VGA box can achieve very close results to the DCHDMI. You can't get rid of any analog interference, though.
I find the Mcable results to be rather inconsistent, I think it works really well with Shenmue here, cleans it up really nicely without losing any real detail, but on the New Super Mario Bros Wii footage from your Wii video I definitely noticed some loss of detail and excessive blurring on certain edges.
I run my Dreamcast through RGB Scart on a CRT TV and to be honest I'm more than happy. I'm more interested in getting my original xbox the best resolution so the m cable will be used for it rather than the Dreamcast.
i think the best balance would've been to have a 720p mode on the DCHDMI, that divides into 4K perfectly and would allow the mCable to do it's thing too!
Your wishes have been answered Abem! With newest Firmware there is a wonderful HQ2X filter that does a great job of filtering out those jaggies :) ruclips.net/video/90CjVhFs_DU/видео.html
Great Video! For now that's the priciest way to play Dreamcast on a modern TV. In my opinion the benefits to the compared solutions are minor. No need for me. My Dreamcast runs with the Akura HDMI Box and the mcable. Also an expensive way to play. But I'm still satisfied, picture quality is perfect for a 20year old console.
The video improvement is Not worth 345 bucks. The quality compared to a VGA Box or $30 HDMI Cable is not worth the huge price increase. I'm trying the Hyperkin HDMI Cable and the image quality looks pretty damn good to me, just as good as the VGA Box and not that much lower quality compared to the HDMI MOD and $120 MCable. A side from the annoying distortion caused by the Pico Dreamcast PSU I installed in my Dreamcast I like the image quality. I don;t know if it's the Pico Dreamcast PSU it's self causing the video noise interference I did not get the "Official" PSU that is $50 on Ebay but got what I guess is a clone, or the external 12 Volt Power supply being a cheap one that does not isolate electrical interference , but without the interference the video image is great, not muddy and no noticeable lag or game breaking motion blur. I tried using other 12 volt Wall Warts but they all had the wrong size barrel plug and would not fit into the barrel plug. If I use the stock Dreamcast PSU I don't get the distortion but now my Dreamcast will run hot again and I have the GDEMU with the Stock PSU 12 volt rail disabled. I'm hoping it's a issue with the Hyperkin HDMI Cable and Pico Dreamcast PSU and ordered the Kaico HDMI Converter and a Sega Dreamcast to HDMI Converter Supports 16:9/ 4:3 switching, Plug and Play HD HDMI Cable for Sega Dreamcast (Sega DC) by Azda that has a 16:9/ 4:3 switch as you can see by the description hoping one of them will solve the video noise interference problem.
Anyone ever run into an issue where Mcable stretches content for 1080p? I haven’t had this with Dreamcast, but it makes me wonder if I’m doing something wrong.
The MCable is automatically going to stretch the image because 1080p at 4:3 doesn't exist natively. To overcome this you need to change the aspect ratio within your TV.
@@fentazen2677 Samsungs are pretty good options if you are in the market for a new TV in the near future. Super low input lag (less than 16ms/1 frame) and they usually let you adjust the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3.

If I could, I'd use the 480p mode of this console with the mCable and call it a day. But, that comes down to your budget and how particular you are.
As Citrus has mentioned elsewhere in the comments, DCHDMI is getting a smoother update to do basically the same work the mCable does.
Potentially.
Hello fantastic video.
This mod allows you to see the aspect at 16:9?
Thank you
It can stretch it I think. But no it won't natively display in widescreen.
@@AdamKoralik
thanks for your answer
This is a 100% perfectly scaled true digital output. If you have a dchdmi you should be using 1080p. It is glorious in person
The re-release seems to do away with the obvious moire patterns that occur on certain textures, too.
Yes, but I also don't care too much for light gun games. In those cases, yes, you'd need to retain a CRT.
@@AdamKoralik thank you so much for your quick reply. I always have appreciated your views and informative videos over the years on everything, not just DC content. I hope these companies really do appreciate you as well for your honest input and opinions on their products. I can tell you that you've pretty much sold me on gekko and M cable. I may have not even heard of these products if it weren't for you and your channel.
Is it still worth getting the DCHDMI mod done, with the system set to 480p plus the mCable connected?
It's an improvement, but really that depends on how much you have to spend and how much you care. I would, but I'm a super fan.
Adam Koralik sounds good. I heard your going to be at mo game con. That’s awesome! It’s my first year going there and I’ve been subbed to you I think for 4 years at least. Hard to remember. Be cool to meet ya man
Yes sir!
Hey Adam you know anybody in the Chicagoland area that’s doing these upgrades yet?
Not personally, no.
Whats the deal with Air force delta? I love that game but why is it such a struggle to emulate outside of its native forms.
It lacks VGA code, makes it a true pain in the ass.
acedotcom Air Force delta runs perfectly fine on the dchdmi. You have to set the dchdmi to cable select in the video settings of the osd. (Or hold down on the dpad when turning the console on)
Do you have a list of what each of those troublesome 50 games need to be set to?
If not, maybe we can solve this together.
If only there was a good hdmi mod for the ps2
Would be nice.
A clean digital mod for the Ps2 is currently being worked on.
Toro VGA Box (using RGB Scart 480p) + Framemeister (with EuroSCART mini passive adapter cable from Retrogamingcables) + mcable (gaming edition), that´s my favourite combination :-)
.................................. ADAAAAAAM!!!!!??
I miss 480p on a computer crt.
A lot of broken Dreamcast laser don't work?
Yeah, both of mine have had their lasers die, and replacing the diode isn't really worth the effort anymore.
I need a Dreamcast!!!!!! Don't return it and send it to me in Australia! Just say ohh it must have been lost in transit...Im dead serious :p
is there a vegene mode too
rip sarelle
Cool
Sorry late to the party. I was sleeping. Is the gdmu an emulator?
Not exactly, it's replicating the GD-ROM. In the dictionary sense of emulator, yes. But not the popular version meaning a program.
heh Maybe Adam could have come to a definitive conclusion about DCHDMI if the hq2x anti-aliasing filter that is now available existed at the time he did the review.
I'm surprised the Mcable was able to work with the the 960p image. With the OSSC, the mcable freaks out and there is graphical garbage on the screen.
Odd.
Can you get this pre-installed?
Yes, depending on where you get it.
@@AdamKoralik Do you know any websites or people that sell this pre-installed (sorry that I send this late at night and if you get notifications).
See for yourself, I show comparison footage in the video
Where in the u.s. can you buy the DC HDMI
CastleMania Games was selling them, I don't know if he still is.
@@AdamKoralik I know😞 I was asking which is the best adapter to use?
@@dreamcast3607 The HDMI micro to a full size port? Just don't buy some cheap Chinese one.
Dreamcast it's still thinking it sounds expensive to run the HDMI mod i use s video for the system and the video quality is good though.
No where near as good, not even measurably close my friend. At the very least you should be using VGA.
@@AdamKoralik understadable but i can't afford VGA even though the quality is better than s-video.
I'm in no position to tell you your budget, but there's some really cheap options these days.

I wish I could go back and watch all his videos for the first time. And sometimes I do any way. 🤣
time to buy a Dreamcast!!! :D
Right?
There's no matter of opinion man, if you're a purist, the DCHDMI is the way to go, it taps directly on the digital output of the GPU, c'mon.
And the new HQ2X update offers antialiasing... so, no brainer.
My $0.02 re: scanlines: yes for 240p resolution games, no for 480p and beyond.
will NBA Showtime work?
Check the list in the description. If you don't see it anywhere, the game works natively.
What about a OSSC?
What about it?
@@AdamKoralik does it achieve the same or if not better video quality compared to the hdmi cable?
Using an OSSC(set to 480p "in sampler" mode) with a VGA box can achieve very close results to the DCHDMI. You can't get rid of any analog interference, though.
I'm certain if they can't do it with this version as of now they could always do one with extra chips on it just for picture optimazation.
I find the Mcable results to be rather inconsistent, I think it works really well with Shenmue here, cleans it up really nicely without losing any real detail, but on the New Super Mario Bros Wii footage from your Wii video I definitely noticed some loss of detail and excessive blurring on certain edges.
Thats the shit right there
I run my Dreamcast through RGB Scart on a CRT TV and to be honest I'm more than happy.
I'm more interested in getting my original xbox the best resolution so the m cable will be used for it rather than the Dreamcast.
How was Vegas? And I still think the Bucks will make the NBA Finals, sorry Scott.
Fun, and yes, go Bucks!
“Loaned?” Of all people I’d expect you to have one ASAP. I’ve successfully installed several now so HMU if you need help.
On it
i think the best balance would've been to have a 720p mode on the DCHDMI, that divides into 4K perfectly and would allow the mCable to do it's thing too!
Videogames New York is far from cool - they didn’t know what a super Famicom was and their prices were through the roof !
I've seen Super Famicoms in there, what do you base that on?
Your wishes have been answered Abem! With newest Firmware there is a wonderful HQ2X filter that does a great job of filtering out those jaggies :) ruclips.net/video/90CjVhFs_DU/видео.html
Great Video! For now that's the priciest way to play Dreamcast on a modern TV. In my opinion the benefits to the compared solutions are minor. No need for me. My Dreamcast runs with the Akura HDMI Box and the mcable. Also an expensive way to play.
But I'm still satisfied, picture quality is perfect for a 20year old console.
Try PS1 with Vagrant Story mcable
Can I haz sum sailors?
If someone like scan lines play on a crt
I know is convenient but buy a Dreamcast to play game from a sd card is sin I think
Derick is correct.
Derick Kerr Thanks. For some reason my TV doesn’t let me force aspect ratio, so that’s my problem
@@fentazen2677 Samsungs are pretty good options if you are in the market for a new TV in the near future. Super low input lag (less than 16ms/1 frame) and they usually let you adjust the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3.
Gecko + mCable still looks best to me.
