  • This is part one of my one week vocal transformation series working with my friend and fellow vocal coach Philippe Hall. I've known Philippe for a few years and he is an authorized CVT (Complete Vocal Technique) instructor, among other things. He is releasing an online course called "The Four Activities of Singing" that he and I have been talking about for years. This video is about the activity he called "airflow control". Stay tuned for the rest of the series, which will be released on a monthly basis.

Very useful lesson, one can only correct mistakes by the help of qualified coach.
Excellent workout, others can surely benefit from this.

@@StudioWestLessons Exactly I also wanted to point out that one can also figure stuff by himself and not be physically present with coach...
It's ofc best to have a coach in person...

Something interesting about airflow is that every element (tongue, pharynx walls, palate, etc.) Modify its course/velocity-speed. So if you give more space behind your eyes the airflow is going to change, no matter what are you doing with your tummy. Nice teacher, I like his relaxed ways of working.

What does it mean if I can't keep my lips fluttering during that exercise more than like a few seconds? Am I just not using enough air, or do I have cancer? Lol

This was so helpful. This was like my main question for a long while. And all I could ever find was how to have proper breath support.. like yes, I know how to breath in from the stomach, but how do you release it?! This answered it fully. Finally. Thank you

Btw, Bruno doesn't sound much chestier to me, in fact he sounds more like head voice with lots of confidence and some dangerous airy mass, another guy in the song actually sounds more chesty thow it is still a mix...

@@StudioWestLessons yes... but I'ts sounds good as well. But there is lack of meaningful... just acrobatic. It is not bad at all, and I can't say you can't learn it... Pay attention to that part where your coach asked you to say the words with amotion? You need deeper understand of it perhaps. Michael Chekhov called these kind of exercises "inner gesture".
And also, what do Bruno's voice more beefy? He is singing professionaly like hell from his what, 5 years old or something? And now he is close to he's what, 35s? Don't you notest that rasp in his singing? I think it is from false vocal folds and it is worked for years kind of naturally, and this is along with confidence and some air as well which is hard to do safely specially at higher notes... So good luck Gregory, I'm excited.

@@StudioWestLessons Great point. Control I think is a better way to describe the issue I was having and am trying to correct and improve on now. I would take a sizable good breath, but feel so constricted with notes exceeding my second passage.

Great exercises. But how come that Gregory stoped controlling his beautiful voice? Through times of his lessons I put attention that at some point he become more serious and less playful. Can it be something emotional Gregory went through that influenced on the voice closing? Best wishes, Gregory is great singer and teacher.
