    Question: If air is still supplied, will the service brake still operate with the spring brake caged? I say it will as it's no different than air holding the spring brake back. But 2 guys in the shop say it will not and that they've tried it before. I think if that is true then they has another problem. What say you, internet?

    • @Shardrk23
      @Shardrk23 4 года назад +1

      Depends on why you need to cage it. If road debris cut the air lines to the brake then no, it absolutely will NOT operate.

  • @captaincope4303
    @captaincope4303 5 лет назад +1

    Is air pressure a problem and when uncaging do you just reverse until stopping?
    Trying to move a bus right now

    • @GarageGurus
      @GarageGurus  5 лет назад +4

      Air pressure should not be a problem. Usually when caging brakes on the side of the road it’s due to the lack of air pressure and the vehicle needs to be moved. So caging the brakes releases spring brake pressure and moving the vehicle can now be accomplished.
      To uncage the brake chamber just turn the nut counter clockwise until the caging bolt can be removed. This applies spring brake pressure and now the vehicle cannot be moved without air pressure

    Just wondering why they just don't use a free spinning washer nut or a flange nut so there are less parts to lose????
    And the socket might be 5" deep but it's not 5" long and 5" deep.
    Not a trucker or truck mechanic but those caging bolts are cheap enough that I'm going to buy a couple just in case I run across a trucker in need.😊

    This will be my first time replacing my brake chambers on my trailer and i want to learn, but i also don’t want my face smashed, so my question is: Before i remove the brake chamber trailer brakes should be applied or released ?

    • @xanatgarcia9241
      @xanatgarcia9241 Год назад

      Released to remove all the brakes components, if you have access to air you can release the brakes and put the caging bolt in tighten up and then set the parking brakes if you lose air. It’ll save time and elbow grease, likewise when taking it out

  • @kerrysgarage4641

    And what if the center shaft is not centered allowing the cagong bolt to go in

    • @GarageGurus
      @GarageGurus  5 лет назад +4

      If the center shaft, push rod, is not lined up with the caging hole the chamber should be replaced due to internal failure. If you cannot cage the spring, the chamber should not be in service. The spring has most likely broken causing the push rod to be pushed out of alignment. There are other internal failures that could result and that’s why it’s best to replace it. A failed emergency side will fail to lock up the wheel end in an emergency situation along with failure to set the parking brake.

    • @13eckerlosmuerte
      @13eckerlosmuerte 3 года назад +2

      You will need to remove the brake pot and clean the debris out then place brake pot back on, the pot is being used as a set force to keep the key engage in the cylinder. Unless you have a manufactured too that does otherwise it's just easier to do it with the pot on

    Is it a temporary process in order to move a vehicle? And will the brakes lock up again if the bolt is taken out?

    • @turbo12v
      @turbo12v 2 года назад +1

      Yes is temporary,you don't want to be caught driving a commercial vehicle with the chamber cage(or without brakes)
      Thats what are you doing eliminating the brake system.
      When you remove the bolt,brakes strat working again! That its just to replace the chambres,or my case.
      I need to move a trailer on the yard that I park
      Air tank leaks,and their is no enough pressure to release brakes.
      I cage those bolt and tire moved freely.
