Definitely agree. That particular scene in the temple, post slap from Chani, where he rises and the camera is positioned behind his back. I remember having goosebumps from both the musical crescendo and the physical movement of Paul turning sideways, revealing half of his face to the audience that now shows this new/darker demeanor that comes with possessing so much knowledge from drinking the water of life. It’s not subtle at all. His body language has completely shifted into someone who is accepting of this reality. He has accepted that he must do what needs to be done in order to protect his loved ones and the Fremen. It’s drastic to the reluctance Paul originally had going towards the Golden Path. Masterfully done. And to add lastly, you can tell by the end of the film that he is still conflicted with making certain moves on behalf of the Holy War and revenge against the imperium and ultimately betraying the love and trust of Chani. But he continues on awayway…absolutely tragic. Nonetheless brilliant, but I would argue that’s how life can be too, tragic. Good intentions does not result in good actions instead in can lead to regret, sadness, and betrayal.

I didn't see Thimotheee anymore, because for me he's one of those actors that no matter the role they're playing I just can't see them as the character, I just see them acting, but Jesus Christ, Thimothee blew me away. I now see a good future for him as an actor, he did such a 180 I couldn't look away from the screen.

I think theres a parallelism between the intro and the films conclusión. At first i thought it was an odd choice starting the film by explaining that after beatraying the atreides the emperor felt sorry for the dukes death since he kind of considered him as a son. But after reflecting on it i realised that has to do with paul accepting the consequences of power in order to succeed even if that meas to hurt and kill so many people in the process and betray chani which yts also in line with one of the core themes of the book about the ways to exrcise power and how at the end an autocrat imperialist system is replaced by another where nothing has fundamentally changed.

When I saw Chalamet’s performance in The King, he clearly showed he (even though being of smaller stature) can effectively harness the king archetype and bring an authoritative presence to the screen, giving me no doubt he can protray the tragic anti-hero of Paul Atreides. It's stunning how angry Paul actually is when he arrives at the war council. He goes very aggressive against any dissenters before he changes to a persuasive tone. The person he's most angry about is also the one he cannot articulate his ressentment against: his mother. Paul blames the Bene Gesserit and in particular Lady Jessica to have made him what he is. Paul then takes his anger out on the wrong persons: on the Fremen and in particular on Chani.

  • @carpeimodiem

Besides Stilgar... The other two Freman that Paul interacts with during the war council scene were just 😘👌 chef's kiss perfect. It REALLY made the scene. One Freman representing strength. The other representing wisdom.
The first Freman looks like an absolute monster of a killer. The look on his face when Paul asks if there is anyone here who could challenge him... his first reaction is like "boy, I will pull out your spine and hang it up on my wall before breakfast..."
And Paul starts to tell him about his grandmother. And how he's praying to her right now. And you can see these perfect subtle changes in his face. It's THE most mind blowing experience of his life... as Paul continues to set off neutron bombs in his brain, one by one.
And we still haven't heard a peep from this man, whose eyes start to drift up to Paul. And then Paul says it... "Dune!" And that's where we get the most incredible "ohF🤬🤬K..!" reaction I have ever seen. Gravity can't work fast enough for this man to hit the deck. His "Lisan Al-Gaib!!" is akin to "get down, you idiots!" For the first time in his life, he is both terrified... And in love. You can feel the shock from everyone behind him as they hit the deck. They've NEVER seen their champion humbled before. It *must* be the Mahdi.
Now that Paul has humbled the most respected fighter in the war council, he turns to address the older wise man. Whom the elders no doubt follow as thier most respected leader for his unparalleled wisdom. His garb is ceremonial. And he's already in awe of what he's just witnessed.
From his prior moments addressing Chani, and also telling Paul to take Stilgar's life and return his water to the well... we can tell he is a kind man, and a stickler for the Freman traditions. Everything is simple to him: "Northern woman... If you want to speak, you know what to do." He doesn't discriminate. And he'd give the same respect to Stilgar as he would anyone who bested him in single combat.
Paul wastes no time addressing him from across the circle. Now that Paul has converted the younger Freman, his stride and demeanor suggests an impatience with anyone still on their feet. Pointing as if to say "if you're not kneeling by the time I reach you, I'll take YOUR water to the well. How DARE you tell me to kill my most trusted friend!!"
Paul yells for all to hear... "In your nightmares, you bring water to the dead. And it fills your heart with joy!!" You can see the old man's knees start to buckle. He immediately feels such shame for ever having the audacity to stand before the chosen one, and insisting he kill Stilgar if he wanted to be heard in this sacred space. He raises both arms above his head as he begins to kneel. Begging Paul for his mercy at such foolishness... "Mahdi!"
The house is now awestruck. All are kneeling, save for one man... Stilgar. Who represents faith, where the other two represent strength and wisdom.
Still holding his knife, Stilgar was ready to die for the greatest honor he could imagine. To bring forth the Lisan Al-Gaib. He's been paralyzed by Paul's transformation before his eyes. Beyond his wildest dreams. His life's purpose utterly fulfilled. Although, we can still see his "spiritual blueballs." He wanted so badly to give his life. A chance to prove that HE ALONE knew the truth. That he was the MOST faithful. And all the laughter and skepticism has been silenced. But he still lives.
It is the most joyful moment of his life. And at the same time, he is filled with this feeling of failure to sacrifice his life for the greatest purpose of all. And if you look closely, from this moment on, you can see it in his eyes. The tinge of sadness. He won't be truly satisfied until he can die for Paul. Until then, he'll be the pillar of faith.
"Mahdi, what do you forsee for us?" Paul answers, "Green paradise." Stilgar drops to his knees as the last man to do so. His love for Paul is absolutely boundless. He begs the Messiah, on behalf of all Freman who have come before him. For every drop in the well of souls. "Lisan Al-Gaib... show us the way!" You can literally feel the collective prayer in the room. It's never been more silent. All the gasps have been replaced by a sea of Freman holding their breath.
Paul begins his speech. Showing everyone his father's ring before sliding it on his own finger. His speech is the most invigorating words any Freman could hear. Their prayers have been answered to a t. Stilgar is the first to rise. Now the knife he's been holding has a true purpose once more.
"LISAN AL-GAIB!! LISAN AL-GAIB!! LISAN AL-GAIB!!" No more blueballs for Stilgar.
It sounds like I'm kidding. But for Stilgar, his faith has created the most euphoric feeling anyone could imagine. He has chased this moment his whole life. Beyond the rapture of true love realized. All the pain and sorrow. All the mockery and ridicule. All the hope and longing.
Chani aside, all doubt has been silenced. It's a higher form of sexual release for Stilgar. Just look at his reaction to Paul telling the Freman to "lead them to Paradise" at the end. You've never felt such satisfaction in your life.
The performance is masterful. And a lock imo for best supporting actor. Austin Butler should definitely get a nod tho. The council scene is quite possibly the most powerful moment of cinema ever filmed.
Timothy should absolutely win every award for best male actor in a leading role. Rebecca Ferguson should get the win for best female actor in a supporting role. On top of best pic, best screenplay adaptation, best director. And all the effects and costumes and cinematography. Original score is a LOCK. So remarkable. Best ensemble cast. Best everything! They should invent an award for best invented language in a film too. Perfection.

@needurskullz damn, dude. I really appreciate the compliment. I'm just such a fan of Denis Villeneuve's work. And of high-quality screen writing in general.
The genius behind DV's work is his minimalist approach to dialog. He's famously said that he hates dialog. But what he's REALLY expressing is his love for subtext.
If you pay attention to every scene in a film like Dune, where he writes and directs, almost every line has a potent subtext. And you can really feel it when the actors are using a made-up language for the film.
I know the actors all had to learn the "Chakobsa" language. But that's almost a trick of movie magic to get the audience to feel a certain way. Nobody is that fluent in any new language in that little time. So, the actors memorize the sounds they need to make. But the motivation is what comes through when we hear it. While taking for granted what we're reading in the subtitles.
Lady Jessica was speaking like four different languages in the film. Rebecca Ferguson perfectly conveyed the subtext in every line. Maybe it was only three. Either way, it was remarkable.
Another great film that uses language and subtext like this is Inglourious Basterds. Which, to me, used language the way that The Wizard of Oz used color. Occasionally, they'd drop the subtitles while the dialog continued. And you'd realize you could understand German. Or at least the subtext of what was happening. Like when the soldier and Shoshanna Dreyfus are interrupted by fans who want to take a picture with the famous Frederick Zoller. Quentin leaves the subtitles off so you can feel the confusion that she feels. She has no idea who this guy is. And she isn't a native German speaker herself. So all she can understand is a few words and the subtext that he seems really important to these random Germans.
Writing has always been a hobby of mine. But I really love the rare situation where perfect screen writing is brought to life in film and tv. Bladerunner 2049 is no exception. And you can feel so much from every moment of dialog. The emotion from what is said, and what isn't said... that's Denis Villeneuve's bread and butter.
In 2049, the nature of the love story between K and his ai girlfriend is so brilliant. He knows she's programed to have feelings for him. But he understands that more than anyone. Because he's essentially a program himself. Not allowed to live or think freely. He's a slave. And so what does he want with her? The ai gf Joi program? He just wants her to be happy. To be as free as she is able to be. Not to take anything from her. And to show his appreciation for the light she brings to his otherwise dark existence. Hunting and killing others like him who go rogue.
They have their little 50s, "Honey, I'm home!" routine. But she drops the character play as soon as he reveals her present. The eminator. And it's all subtext. She goes from one costume to the other. Housewife, French poetry cafe, ballroom dancing... But the moment he turns it on, she switches to the clothes she likes. A blue sundress. To express her freedom of being able to move around without the constraints of the ceiling contraption she's been restricted to.
K tells her she can go anywhere she likes. And asks where she'd like to go. It cuts to the roof. Where she gets to be outside for the first time. And feels the rain. She's genuinely happy. And not because he's happy. A genuine moment between two people trapped in the world they're forced to serve in.
She truly loves him. And he loves her. But he also knows that she was built to love whomever owns her. And he doesn't want that. She wants to tell him. But she knows that he's afraid of her programming. So she just says what she knows is real. "I'm so happy with I'm with you." Even that makes him worry about her programming. "You don't have to say that..." She knows exactly who she is. And if she had a real body, she'd thrash him right there in the rain. But all she can do is look in his eyes and feel his hands in hers. And even though he can't feel her lips, she can feel his. To the extent that her programming allows her to feel the physical world. And he's giving HER the experience. He's demonstrating his love for her by genuinely looking past the physical constraints of her form. Doing for her what her program would do for others.
It's the most poetic expression of real love I've ever seen. Sacrifice. Looking past the shortcomings everyone else may see. Being able to see someone's true heart and soul.
Fast forward to the moment of truth. When she knows that he needs to delete her backup to keep his enemies (her masters) from downloading her information from the console. She knows that she's risking her existence. She'd rather die than be used against him.
And then later, to her final moments of existence. She knows she's about be killed. And the words she's held back forever can't wait any longer. "I love...."
Masterful. All of it. And that's the pinnacle of sci-fi to me. When a storyteller can use something futuristic and imaginative to create a world that enhances the view of what's true today, in our world. The text is fiction. The subtext is real life. Where we connect. And no one does it better than Denis.

Javier Bardem's Stilgar was awesome too. People need to pay attention to the acting; it's equal to the effects.
We have to remember that Chalamet's acting was a result of good directing. You can see Paul's demeanor change; even his walk changed when he began to be resigned to his new role among the Fremen and then his role as responsible for billions of deaths.

Yeah, and also editing. They have hours of takes for a single scene, and what the director and editor, and actors sometimes, decide are the best bits get spliced together into one whole seamless thing. This movie is what happens when clear vision at the top and true passion come together and are allowed the freedom to bloom.

It was unbelievable. Great video capturing that! I love the comparison between Leo in Titanic and Timothee in Dune Pt 2. I wasn't alive when Titanic was in theaters, but I've seen the film, and Leo definitely completely embodies the character of Jack completely believably... just like Timothee and Paul, now that I think about it! Although I think I would say the same about Rebecca as Jessica, Austin as Feyd, and Stellan as the Baron, too. Every performance was just incredible, and I completely believed the characters and the story, sitting in that theater.

I went into it thinking my childhood was about to get ruined, but he actually put his all into this silly musical and I respect that. And then to just COMMAND that room of Fremen!! What a turn! If you just listened to the sound of his voice from both movies, you wouldn’t believe it’s the same guy. For someone who looks like he might blow away in the wind, his performance had weight. I was ready to Jihad the Great Houses. Dune Messiah will be another test of his abilities but he’s got it. He is the Lisan Al-Gaib

OK, several thoughts. Even though it was a small role, I think he was a great choice in Interstellar as well. I liked him in Wonka too, which stands in huge contrast to the movie Dune Part II is. He’s been a great actor in my opinion from the start. I thought he’s delivered a brilliant performance in both Call Me by Your Name and Beautiful Boy. Of course in terms of his physical appearance, let’s face it, he will not be able to act it like Dave Bautista :). He may not be able to transform his body the way Christian Bale has. I do agree Timothee’s work in Dune Part II was among the finest and I think he is already a rockstar legend while still early in his career. As for your video Cortex, not sure about your first name, but this essay was mindblowing! This one really shows the amount of work you must put into it, your thoughts on paper, the editing and so on. You are extremely wholistic and thorough, very reflected with a huge vocabulary, in this essay a little poetic too. Maybe it's just me, but I am not able to understand his expression at any time. If the goal is to show a confused teenager, great, mission complete, but the whole time I was like "don't these people (other characters) see he is confused, not in love, not happy, not a friend of yours, pretending to be a war leader?". The whole time I was waiting for another character to say "there is something you are not telling me/us", but all seemed to be deceived. Again, I can accept the idea of personal conflict, but not the idea that nobody else was seeing that conflict. His sister as a fetus does not count, and Chani only started suspecting when he was getting closer to Gurney.

When I first saw the likes of De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson, Washington, etc... I immediately knew they were one of the greatest.
Timothee however, is something wild and unexplained. When I first saw him, I disliked him. That sad puppy eyes, scrawny and fragile constitution, pronounced and pointy jaw, everything with him gave me an impression that he was there by accident, as one of many short lived teenage stars.... Boy was I wrong... From the initial dislike, I came to the point where I almost revere him. He might be small, skinny and "insignificant" on first but his performances in every role he had were massive, jaw dropping and captivating...
And that's why I know he wont be one of the greatest. He will be the greatest, mark my words.

Now I believe that Timothee has the potential, as a thespian, to be like the next Daniel Day-Lewis or Christian Bale of today's generation of young actors. I think Timothee is absolutely perfect for Paul, and in first film he showcased his worthiness and deservingly secured his position as the character. However I don't think his performance in part 2 was perfect. There are moments where his empowering sense of emotionality is domineeringly effective but in others, especially in a pivotal scene, his range doesn't measure to where his execution is trying to reach, but still remains to be compelling enough to carry the weight of his position throughout the story and his notable transcendence from Prince to Duke that is the kwisatz haderach, to muad dib into lisan al gaib and eventually emperor is a well felt and carried out transition. But I do hope everybody here is aware that Paul's rise to power is actually dangerous cautionary tale and is not a good thing. Yeah in retrospect ending the reign of the harkonnens and overpowering the imperium was well intended to lead the fremen and those who are under the guides of the imperium's conquest to a new paradise, but the results of Paul's crusade ends with foolishly tragic and unfortunate outcomes.

@@johnjungkook2721 I don't completely agree. I think he's very good and can be convincing when hitting the right notes of expression especially when it comes to facial acting, body language, and emotionality but just not incredibly great yet, he does have the potential to be so and it has been proven in some of his filmography in films such as Little Women, The King, Bones and All, Beautiful Boy, Call Me By Your Name, Miss Stevens even Part 1 of Dune and his current upcoming film as Bob Dylan I'm sure gonna be a masterful experimentation for the young lad. Now, regarding Dune part 2, some performances were stronger than others and some were certainly underwhelming such as Zendaya, Chris Walken, Florence Pugh, and Dave Bautista I mean you see the talent and capability but they're never given enough room to fully deliver and I'd say if any performances outshined the Cast it would most certainly be Austin Butler as the malicious Feyd Rautha, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgard. Timothee, Josh Brolin, Lea Seydoux, Charlotte Rampling, and Souheila Yacoub are right in the middle in the safe zone of giving decent and fairly solid performances

Now I by any means am not saying that Denzel is a bad performer, he is absolutely terrific. He has the qualities that make him convincingly engaging and possesses talent with strong conviction. Yes there are instances within some of his roles where he completely sinks his teeth into the character and Denzel the man fades away. Perfect examples are Training Day, Malcolm X, Glory, The Hurricane, Cry Freedom, Antwone Fisher, Philadelphia, Roman J. Israel Esquire, Tragedy of Macbeth. But overall Denzel is essentially a movie star who plays different versions of himself and is not as versatile or transformational as he's been made out to be especially not as seen in other actors such as Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale who for the majority of the roles they've played transcend beyond themselves and completely disappear making them masterful chameleons of their craft. Hell, even though Sam Jackson and Chiwetel Ejiofor can be guilty of being themselves in a fair amount of their work but still have done enough to even be identified as chameleon because they are character actors who makes far more significantly colorful alterations and transitional qualities to the characters they've portrayed whether be leading or supportive. Denzel doesn't hit the same note as his colleagues do. So he stands in the same circle as others such as Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson

Remember, Paul is the bad guy.
    He wanted revenge.
Paul and Jessica could have just quietly been absorbed by the Fremen.

He’s not the bad guy either. He’s a morally grey character.

But I can't agree with that Leo Dicaprio in Titanic. The movie Titanic was great, of course, but I have to admit that I didn't like either Jack or Rose. I can't explain it, but somehow I didn't even like Leo as Jack.

Yeah agreed I watched it for the 3rd time today and even though her acting impressed me in the first two when you compare her to Timothée or Rebecca she’s just not in the same league. No one was poor though - Christopher Walken gave nothing but I guess that’s kind of the point of his character

Chani, the character as modified by DV, is flawed. She couldn’t exist in the world of arrakis. She was 2005 US not fremen. The actress was hampered by not being in the world that Chani would be in.

No Chani character was pivotal to elevate the film away from another cringe white saviour film using people of colour as followers

Like your analysis, except one thing:
ANY comparison to Star Wars is pointless. That had a shoddy backstory, scenario full of plot holes, simpleton script, essentially a flashy but poor movie. More importantly for your analysis, the acting in SW is amateurish by any standard.
