Skyrim - Japanese voices with English subs (with explanation)

- Sorry everyone, I had to reinstall my OS so I no longer have the files. You can likely find them on the internet though.
Crank up the volume, this game is quiet.
This works for the ENTIRE game- ALL voices.
How do you do it?
Actually very easy- set the game to Japanese in Steam, let it update, then go to Program Files - steam - steamapps - skyrim - Data (or something like that) and backup the "Skyrim - Voices.bsa" and "Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa" files to somewhere. If you want the various menus in Japanese (like I have- does not include names, subtitles, or items), then also backup the "Translate_English.txt" in the Interface folder in there.
Then, switch the game language back to English in Steam, let it update, then copy back and overwrite the newly downloaded English files with your previously backed up Japanese ones (replace the word "Japanese" in any filename with the word "English"). Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work with all the game text (items, subs, etc.) because of encoding issues, which is why I don't recommend backing up the Interface.bsa and Misc.bsa files and the Strings folder (the text becomes gibberish). But if you wanted that you could just leave the language in Steam to Japanese, right?
Then just hope Steam doesn't try to update the files you changed. You may want to turn off auto-updating.
If you have a non-Steam copy of Skyrim, you can grab the files from a friend who has the Steam version using the same method. They'll probably appear on the internet soon enough too (note I am NOT condoning copyright violation).
Also, I cannot send people my voice files. They're too big for e-mail and uploading them somewhere would probably be copyright violation for me. (Just wait though, it always happens...)
I can however send the contents of Translate_English to people who want it in either language; that will translate the game's interface (not items or spells or subtitles). Just send me a message requesting it.
Game content copyright Bethesda.
"W-what are you looking at, Criminal-san?"
i like how ulfric walks slowly to the throne, sat down for a sec and then stood up and goes back to the room lmao
Female stormcloack just being a tsundere
"Hands to yourself, sneak thief."
Sounds like a tsundere!
THIS IS SO WRONG BUT IDK IT'S STILL OKAY
Female of skyrim just become kawaii
The Elder Scrolls 6: Akavir (and yes I know Akavir is the continent like Skyrim is in Tamriel, I just don't know any of the provinces within Akavir)
Make it happen Bethesda!
i'm still waiting for elder scrolls (insert number) black marsh (or valenwood, or summerset, or elswyre, or hammerfell)
KenkuRogue
well if im not mistaken elder scroll 2 is in hamerfell. well waiting for elder scroll in akavir the homeworld of blade so i have enough reason to play it in japanese XD
perhaps, but revisitations are always nice. like how in skyrim for the Dragonborn DLC we got to revisit solstheim
lol yeah revisit hammerfell on HD
XD
RePhantomz agreed man!

"I have decided that this chair does not reflect the fabric of my interior desires. How can one express a sincere desire to eradicate all those that wish to falter one's progress, when one is not prepared? I shall stand up and walk back and forth until my enemies grow vexed in anticipation, verily we should strike!"
thumps up ! if you want a japanese voice pack with english sub !
Thank you *SO MUCH* for the explanation. This was *EXACTLY* what I was looking for. I have both Steam (full and Special Edition) and NoSteam modded versions. Now I can have 1 Skyrim (NoSteam) with all the languages in 1 game. Planning upload after finished gathering all languages (voices and texts). And maybe Special Edition too.
;-)
@CaeniaMedia
Japan has an entire industry built up around voice-acting, anime, so they have a large pool of talented voice actors. The US doesn't have this, they have screen actors but they expect large amounts of money to do voice work, and also if you've seen any Pixar films you know that being a good screen acting doesn't mean you're a good voice actor.
Quoting Max Kenton: "Japanese bootlegs are always better."
I'm getting this!!
The game is actually fully dubbed in Japanese? That's...very interesting, especially since I didn't expect it from Skyrim of all games. You should do a comparion of the lines said in japanese and in english, just to see which voice actors are better.
1:01 is "itsu made", lit "until when",
1:20 is "naru to" lit "will become and then".
いつまで待つつもりだ?
"Itsu made matsu tsumori da?"
Like it says in the subtitle, "How long are you planning on waiting?"
If you change your windows system default to Japanese, the Japanese game texts will show up properly. It changes everything to Japanese, though.
Dawnguard's voice assets are in the Dawnguard.bsa. As such, it's somewhat difficult to take just the voice files. However, if you are adventuresome and can use a bsa extracter, you could just extract the voice files and use those as a loose file version.
i finally made it work
you need to update the skyrim game to japanese language then back up the Japanese voice bsa and extra voice bsa put it on new folder then update your skyrim back to english language then drop the japanese voice bsa and extra voice bsa in your skyrim data folder
start the game the subtitles are english but the voice of the characters is japanese
@Chinothebad I know a German one exists, it can be reasonably assumed a French one exists. Using this method should work for any language with an official dub.
NOW I WILL FOREVER IMAGINE SKYRIM AS A HUGE MMORPG.
@Suchar12 Ah sorry, it seems Steam allows some languages in some countries and other languages in other countries. If you have any friends in Japan or the US or another country where you can get Japanese audio, try asking them to send you their language files (which shouldn't be breaking copyright if you both own the game and do a direct file transfer).
I don't have the DLC so I don't know. You probably need to find where the Dawnguard voice packs are and backup the Japanese versions and then switch to English and overwrite the English packs with the Japanese packs. They are certainly separate files form the vanilla voice packs.
japanese just made this game so much more badass
Won't affect those either, unless maybe they change subtitles or something.
1:20 "Naruto Manga"
There are a few files that are specified as being Japanese (or whatever language). Skyrim will not read them properly or at all if the filename is not the same as the game language. I don't offhand remember which files these were but they were in a subfolder somewhere iirc. They weren't hard to find- Translate_English.txt may well be one of them (but I honestly don't remember well).
@CharonM72 ok ok ok! now what i( and pretty sure i can say we) really wanna hear here is the japanese version of "stupid lars battleborn i fight him everyday but he's not much of a challenge" from whiteruns very own tsundere braith! she also has a line where she goes all dere! and confesses she's in love with him complete with all that tsundere greatness!
@cr4yv3n
Yes they do.
I just replace the orginal english voice files with the japanese audio files and it works perfectly fine with english subtitles.
@suzushirou
It's the same with anime though. It sounds good to people who don't live in Japan or speak Japanese but to those who do, they can recognize how bad it is.
@iwanfishz9 It exists on the internet somewhere... remember that Google is your friend.
Keep trying occasionally if you can't find it, Google's web crawler takes some time.
Of course if you do find it on the internet, remember that downloading those files is only not infringement if you already own the game (i think, those laws are pretty confusing and vague).
that's freaking badass
Ulfric and his lackey there sound especially badass
@CharonM72
no one has uploaded them yet.
Besides i have a broadband has a high download speed so it's no problem.
can't wait to find out what cicero sounds like.
though i hardly understand a word i'm still gone use it, it always seems as if the japanese voiceactors get payed a lot more then the english one's : /
I don't have any of the expansions but I think Dawnguard's files will be in a different location. I imagine that in theory the process should be the same if you can find the appropriate files.
ERUDU SKURORU GO SKYRIM!
I just tried this out, currently doing the College quests and all I can say is Ancano sounds devious as heck
@ivynbean They do. And the lip syncing does not match, no. However for someone who wants to practice Japanese and know what's happening (subtitles), this method is very useful. Besides, the voices do sound pretty boss. I have yet to try many other people (Hermaeus Mora must be fun)
@UltimeciaKnight Using the Japanese version and just replacing the voice files with the English voice files in the way described in the description should work fine. If the whole game is in Japanese otherwise, there shouldn't be encoding issues.
aaaaaah i recognize that voice, the guy who does Ulfric's voice is Takenaka Naoto
@iwanfishz9 that's not what i mean -.- the voice files are available somewhere.
@CookieTacoYummy I doubt it pretty highly; there may be a complicated hack if you install it to the hard drive but I don't know of anything.
in my opinion the English voice actors sound sarcastic and emotionless
Thanks :-). I had a Guide (which I have hidden away in my shelf) and it did say somthing about using polite words "desu" and "te imasu" (inpolite). But thanks, now I'll say Watashi wa Iwan desu
Sounds surprisingly better.
@dkamm65 That's weird, try making sure Skyrim and Steam are updated. Japanese should have been available since Dec. 8.
No, everything should be named with "English". The files with "Japanese" in their filenames may have just been for the UI, in which case if you aren't translating the UI to Japanese then it doesn't matter for you. You can also just do a search for files with "Japanese" in the name and rename them to English after you have finished every other step.
If the game has that language setting, then you can use the same method to do this.
@Hsnyutsu Mods and the rest of the stuff works with Pirated copies. I had to use Pirated copy myself because I always receive my pre-orders 2 - 3 days after release -.-
I won't help you any further thou because I do not support piracy! Good luck searching!
There's no need to turn the auto-update for the game off, since the updates rarely touch the Voice.bsa/VoiceExtra.bsa
correction: It should not, but it does ;)
But Bethesda included so many things to do on Skyrim but they still didn`t get rid of the bugs or the crashes so i have to agree with you there.
and here I thought it'll be horrible...but it blends so perfectly! their voices I mean.
They sound like from those old samurai movies. Awesome.
Check if you have Japanese text supported on your computer. You can google how to do that. Otherwise it may be a unique issue and then it may be best not to use Japanese text.
@SadisticCanada It's because generally, whatever app or game your running, there are incorrect fonts. My second language is russian and most programs I use on Windows give me weird letters or squares. You could just change language in Steam to Japanese or download the Skyrim game torrent from a Japanese site and is this how you spell Watashi wa Ivan desu; WATASHIWA IWAN TE IMASU Stupid iPhone Keyboard, won't translate to Kanji
The language of the game is the language of the country you buy it from. At least I bought skyrim from Germany and it was only in German on my xbox. Maybe it is possible to download other languages on the PC, but I'm not sure.
Ulfric now finally sounds like a real bad guy...
He was never meant to be, and the japanese voice is in agreement: he's got that feel of a strong and powerful teddy BEAR. The propaganda against him is in direct conflict with his attitude in this scene, which was an important part of his character: He wants his freedom with as little blood as possible. Clearly this was Bethesda predicting how the 2016 election would be like, and they only got the faces wrong: Ulfric should have golden blond hair and they should've switched elisif with that old hag in riften.
my Skyrim guard cant be this cute
You're right about Steam's languages for defined countries. I have US friend that has Skyrim, but non-steam version. He has downloaded Skyrim using my account and Japanese still wasn't listed. He asked his US friend with American Skyrim key and he could change his language to Japanese, so it's my Polish key's fault. What do I do now? :/
so you need the Voice.bsa / VoiceExtra.bsa from the Japanese (version) and re-set skyrim to english and then replace the voice.bsa/voiceExtra.bsa with the japanese files?
That won't give you subtitles, that'll just translate some interface text. But if you want it anyway, I'll send it to you.
Dayum! Japanese Ulfric sounds way more badass then the english one!
@prettyflowerboysxoxo Boxes? Like for the [tab] compass and the main menu? That shouldn't happen. It's expected however for other text like subtitles and item names if you try to translate them.
i'm fucking download it!!
don't care if doesn't fit the lore at all
I WANT IT NOW
It surprises me how Ulfric can still speak a human tongue, I remember the 3 of the Greybeards could no longer speak because they're voices were too strong for people to withstand.
Fist of the Skyrim Star
Oohhh! I want japanese voices with english subtitles on my ps3(
It fits really cool.
you cant have mods on console
Uncle Crimbo demo..
They sound badass in japanse
@Key2541 you can't get alternative languages on a system, there's too much dialogue to fit on the one disk, you gota buy the pc version and download mods and such onto it
sorry :(
Ulfric voice is still glorious even in the japanese version
Unfortunately the chances of that being possible are very small. If you run it off a disk, it's almost certainly impossible, and regardless it'd need very intricate hacking.
I absolutely love Japanese voices and I want this on my Skyrim.
Follow the instructions in the description and it should still work! Unless they changed the file structure.
Oh thanks!
Well frick. Nevermind. I have it on Switch not steam.
私はあなたのような冒険でしたが、その後、私は膝に矢を取った。
everything sounds 100x cooler in japanese
@UltiMasterlord You don't play in full Japanese so that all the text remains in English. I suppose you could try putting the English text files into the Japanese version though... never thought of that.
"Mooring rope", but that's not what he says.
Trust Japan to actually get somewhat competent voice actors.
It's like I'm actually watching a Berserk game.
i tried this twice now and still get english voice >.>
TAGER IS THAT YOU?!? D:
Usually, Japanese dubs suck, but this one sounds goods.
H-hands yo yourself, k-kono sneak theafu..!
It gives a new feel to the game. LIKE!
Hmmm they Ulfric and Bearman sound like the officers from Navy in Once Piece
STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL GAIJIN
That sounds crazy good!
I got Dawnguard working but I didn't do it myself. I had help which is no longer available. Not sure how to do Hearthfire and Dragonborn.
I love this. Ulfric really sounds like a villain in Japanese. ;)
if this was made into a anime,i would shit my pants if they did because skyrim is the best game so far
Everything sounds amazing in japanese :D
Awesome, I'm definitely trolling my twitch audience by playing Skyrim in Japanese voices. They won't know what the heck they've came in on.
Tsundere Stormcloak! Too bad I sided with Imperium. Now I can't find any...
@deztructicus Yes, but the voices for the player characters seem to be different
@LoserNoGirl i wouldnt be able to fit them all in 500 characters if i listed them
@RichoRosai ehh, sometimes, in Skyrim's case i think the English voice acting was better, but i cannot say the same for Oblivion
Is that Marina Inoue at 1:57?
This is making me want a Skyrim anime.
shiiiiit. real voice actors
I wonder how Cicero sounds like in japanese.
Do you know where I could hear this in Norwegian? It would fit perfectly, better than English, Japanese, Spanish, ect.
