- In this video, we'll show you how to add a second Ethernet port to your Proxmox Server. This will allow you to connect additional devices to your server without having to re-install the operating system and you can assign another network to it etc (vlan).

you shouldn't need to power anything down. these usb dongles are usb plug and play and so long as the drivers are in the active environment (they usually are), you just need to plug it in, plug in some ethernet, refresh the web ui, and add the network adapter to your network interfaces section of proxmox.
hey thanks for the add!
Pls how do I add more Ip addresses to my server. I'm running almalinux . I have a block of IP addresses but don't know how to use them. And I have signed a 2yrs contract with my ISP. Pls help..
@@kevinexit12 you should manager that on your firewall
Could recognize those monoprice Ethernet cables anywhere, great setup!
haha right! pretty cool thanks man!
With those tiny PCs I'd recommend getting a tiny m.2 to Ethernet adapter that fits in the empty port on the back. Usb to Ethernet works great, but costs performance, since it has to go through the CPU.
What m.2 to Ethernet would work in a Elitedesk 800 G3 Mini? I also heard the motherboards can be restricted and won't allow that.
@@ronaldvandijk3603it’s fine your pc has usb 3.0 which can handle nearly 5gbps. The performance cost won’t be noticeable enough
How about the heat? USB 3.0 is a torch when active.
Reliability? USB Ethernet is not recommended in PFSense/router community. Cmiiw.
NIce little stack there man !! DAMN !!
Great. I would use that second port for migration / replication traffic. Datacenter --> options --> migration. It will set an IP directly to the physical NIC. So there isn't a bridge.
What’s some interesting use cases for an extra Ethernet port? Thanks for the vids
Your regular network traffic can go over one port, and the communications between the cluster computers can go over the second port.
Would you share what this is used for? Is this for redundancy, to increase bandwidth or both? Thanks.
one example could be lets say you have to internet connection have it connected that way or lets say you have a guest lan and a your main lan network you can have a vm on each lan if you wanted too without have two proxmox setups. really endless things you can do. redundancy Yes or set another static ip to it, etc
Can I use an Usb to eth for a virtual pfsense instance? Main goal is to use as WAN/LAN.
Yes just have to create a virtual bridge to it
There are a few ways you could use multiple network interfaces. if you needed additional bandwidth and have a manged switch you could use link aggregation, if you wanted to have a physically separate management lan from your vm's to improve security, you could do that, if you wanted to have a seperate backhaul network for a cluster for either hyperconverged data storage (ceph or glusterfs) or for HPC clustering while having a seperate interface to the rest of your network, you can do that. if you wanted to have 2 different interfaces attach to 2 physically separate managed switches for switch redundancy, you could do that. there are a bunch of reasons why you might want more interfaces on a stack of minipc's running proxmox.
How many ssds you have in each mini pcs? I am doing a mini pc proxmox setup here and only have 1 ssd slot. Also what ssd are you using and which model?
I'm using a similar Ethernet to USB-A adapter, but I noticed that it is constantly very hot. Any recommendations? Is it the same with the Amazon Basics that you use?
What a cool cluster
Thanks man 😊
I did this set them as a bond to get a bit more speed out to my network.
Nice 👍
What I did on my proxmox setup was add a second gigabit ethernet and ran the Wan connection on it. Then I used the internal network connection to my network switch. That was even if I lose internet connection or the usb network fails the internal network still remains and I can access my network and VM's.
nice!
@@GreyTechLive but then once again I had to sell that server 😒
Between Dell Optiplex Micro, HP Prodesk, HP EliteDesk and Lenovo Tiny, between that and all of their variant, which is more power efficient using Proxmox?
My goal is far below 35KWh, since that is my benchmark from 2nd and 6th Gen Intel T processor.
I tried this, but after a reboot of Proxmox the adapter get every time a new name ... -.-
Side effect of using USB interface I think, I tried to create ZFS pool using external disks connected over USB but the restart would trash the pool as the disks would be assigned new disk IDs after reboot.
Which particular USB Ethernet is that? I have from Unpluggable and it isn't recognized (it is, but gives me a config error when I pass it to my VM), I'll try creating a bridge instead -- maybe that'll work.
I have no idea about any of this, but I want to learn yet I don't have the money to do it.
Based
Those fail after about a month but why do I need two when I have virtualization?
The heat kills them. I've had a Cisco USB dongle die like that.
Really? I have a cheap TP-Link one plugged into a Raspberry Pi Zero for about 4 years now and it's still working perfectly fine, 24/7.
It's because you're running it on a 3.0 , it's probably getting too hot over and over again.
Bad idea as the USB are all junk Realtek chips and unstable and unreliable for real networking (pfSense et Al).
Alright
I don't have a working ethernet port in my motherboard, can i use a USB to ethernet port for proxmox ?
100% i would have two of them just to have a backup but yes you can!
@@GreyTechLive thanks for the info
@@sabarinaths3428 anytime!
You could also have another USB Ethernet dongle in you junk drawer for those emergencies when an Ethernet port isn't detected.
Whats the Brand of this ethernet cables? Thx
those look like monoprice slimrun
Whats the server?
name of that rj45 connector, translucid
Don't do that, purchase a switch that supports vlan instead, that's a much cleaner setup and gives you way better performance.
But if you have a switch that supports vlan, you'll need to purchase also a router that supports vlan....
@@RaduRadonys no.
@@RetroComputingwithMike So a dumb router works with a vlan enabled switch? The switch does not have DHCP, so how will the IP assignment work for different vlans?
@@RaduRadonys yes, and it will work however you choose to set it up.
Switch doesn't resolve the issue if you only have one ethernet port in your device and you want to setup OPNSense for example.
dude, usb to ethernet on a server ?!?!?!... sacrilege !
flashdisk mu🎉
Cool idea but my concern is bandwidth bottlenecks and heat. These things can get hot. I've been meaning to f/u on this. Anyone else have experience with these issues?
Извините, но это полнейшая фигня 😂
