When people tell me that Montana had Rice, Craig, etc. and that's why he was so great, I remind them that 37 year old Joe made the names Willie Davis, J.J. Birden, & Kimble Anders famous. Let that sink in....GOOD TIMES!
...and Keith Cash (money in the bank)
Even though my Broncos lost, this is one of the best football games I've ever seen. Elway and Montana were on another level.
nice hyperbole.
This is a game I still watch (9/15/2023).
And it's only a regular season game.
Spoiler my guy
2:23:55 Joe Montana pump fake is so good, he gets the camera guy to bite!
LOL and great comment, man.
I remember watching this game. I was in Estes Park, CO for a conference. There were maybe 3 of us sitting down in the hotel bar that night, cheering for the Chiefs. Everybody else - Broncos fans!!!!! We were absolutely screaming!!!
I still was, watching this tonite. Dead sober!
I was 15 years old and a die hard Cowboys fan from Dallas. I remember watching this gem. Watching Montana vs Elway was like watching Beethoven vs Mozart. Montana may have not been what he was in Frisco but He still had the "it" factor.
@Tim Adams Mozart played for The Berlin Fire..... Beethoven played for The London Monarch hehehehe
That dude was a BEAST OF A QB on his retirement march. I missed him in 49es uniform but still watched him KC. Felt like I had a second team.
Saw this live at a sports bar. Could not believe what I was seeing. I knew whomever had the ball in their hands last would win it. Yo Dennis Smith and The Snow Goose! Marcus Allen! Montana had one 'quality" receiver, J. J. Birden. Oy vey. Yo, the great John Elway.
I was 12 when this game was played, everyone in my class was conflicted as to who was going to win this one and my dad was pretty much shitting bricks the entire time. I remember having a friend over and trying to ask him a few questions and it was like talking to a brick wall.
I was always wondering how Joe and Marcus Allen would have fared against the Cowboys during those years, but they couldn't get past the Bills for us to find out.
Thank you, NFL, for *FINALLY* uploading this game! There have been some great Monday Night Football games, but it's difficult to think of one that tops this. *Montana* 34 of 54 for 393 and 3 TD's! He out does Elway in Elway's back yard! Now... can you guys please upload that 1993 playoff game between the Chiefs and Oilers?
It's there. But I wish they'd bring back the wildcard game vs the steelers just before that. 4th down and goal to win the game...awesome!
that was an awesome game I remember it
The oiler game is on youtube
"Lord, you can take me now, I've seen it all!" A perfect quote from Dan Dierdorf to describe what we all witnessed that night.
I’ll never forget that!
Montana the GOAT
My favorite quote of all
I liked Dan in the booth on Monday Nights, apparently not too many others felt likewise.
@@seansimms8503 Yeah, I thought Dierdorf was good, and making a three-man booth work cannot be easy. I thought Dierdorf was also good with Greg Gumbel (who gets moved around a lot) on CBS.
Montana f'n magic.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot hey you again
I watched this game live as a kid. Legends going at it! One of the best duels between elite quarterbacks in the history of this game!
In the era QB's would get bounced around a lot, no call back then.
I'm a Chiefs fan and was living in Colorado when this game was played. Main thing I remember is the guy in the apt above me cussing up a storm when KC scored the game-winning TD.
ya you know what I remember in the 97 playoffs in arrowhead KC fans Crying when Denver knocked them out of the playoffs in Arrowhead
@@davidpadilla8400 lol what a child
@@davidpadilla8400 what a big child
Tremendous seeing all thee snowflake generationers and late millenials defending Tom Shady to death everywhere. Maybe i because it's the only thing they are gonna "win" in their lives. The world they have been living is all plastic and fake, thet's why their delusion is so important to defend.
@@davidpadilla8400 flash forward to 2020. Mahomes just won the SB and your team just so happens to be one of the lucky 3 teams that get to be stuck in his division for the next 10-15 years with Elway throwing his own team into the trash can as the general manager. Ope.
I remember my parents were punishing me so I couldn't watch this game on TV, I had to listen to Jack Buck and Hank Stram on the radio, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ah the memories...
Genetic Freak and now thanks to RUclips you can watch the game!!!
I once turned off the sound on tv to listen to Jack Buck & Hank Stram! Thank you!!!!!
So cool for the NFL to bring back such classic games. One of the best Monday Night football of the period no doubt.
Absolutely!
Glad Joe brought joy to KC. But to me he will always be a Niner. GOAT forever.
Its ok. We'll take Mahomes
you will see so many beautiful throws in this qb masterpiece
If you like lots of beautiful throws - a real shootout between hot QB's, but also with lots of outstanding defensive plays, turnovers, special teams excellence, crazy trick plays by both sides, unusual and surprising rule call, incredible individual performances by both sides and an incredible, nail-biting ending - essentially another "this game had it all" then I recommend 2019 week 14 49ers at Saints: ruclips.net/video/PEtMB7G0mH4/видео.html. Both teams 10-2 determined, laying it all on the line, fighting for home field advantage in the playoffs. The announcers are great - into the game, and the audio/video is crisp and sharp. You can't ask for a better game. Among the very best NFL games ever. I shouldn't overhype it. No fear. You can't overhype that game.
@gregory garner Well, pardon me. I still enjoy watching other great NFL games. Jim Thorpe is long gone but the Olympics are still great to watch. I'm an old 49er fan - saw some Brodie and all the Montana, Young, Garcia, Smith, Kaepernick, etc. games and will continue to enjoy and appreciate good games. I stand by my statement that the week 14 game last year was one of the best NFL games I've ever seen, not just for the great QB performances but for all the other aspects that were dialed way up. Plus the camera work is so much better now than in the Montana-Elway era!
@gregory garner Agreed.
Jeff had some recent tough love words for JimmyG that I saw in some short YT review of Game 1. I think the 49ers (and all NFL teams) really missed the benefit of the pre-season games to sharpen things up.
I remember this game, just like yesterday.
The two greatest "come back quarterbacks."
Joe Cool did it!!!
One of the best MNF games of all time!!
No The best MNF game ever
Referee Jerry Markbriet talks quite a bit about this game in his book. He gives a great and different point-of-view
If this game was played today, there would have been 40 flags for hits on defenseless receivers, another 20 flags for roughing the passer, and another 100 for unnecessary roughness.
I think they've cleaned up the game well, resulting in less injuries. But damn, this league used to be BRUTAL. It really was war without weapons.
montana- elway...two tough old warriors...joe with his bad ribs, elway with his bad knee, still kicking ass...three other players went out with sprains and limps but came back in later...sure miss those days before the sissies took the game over...
This may be the greatest game I ever watched. Joe will always be the best and he proved it. I remember actually jumping when he threw the final pass for a td. Great game
What people forget is Elway did it to Joe the year earlier in 1993 in Denver. This game was remember cause it was on Monday Night Football. Also, people forget Elway Beat Joe in San Fran and in 1985 in Denver as well. Elway Is the Greatest QB to ever play and if he played on any of the San Fran Teams he would have won 10 Super Bowls
@greg garner Joe was the system
David Padilla elway was NOT the greatest.. Tom Brady IS the greatest. Period.
David Padilla agree 💯. If Elway played from the start of his career with the 49 he would’ve won like 8 super bowls.
+@@davidpadilla8400 Bronco fans cheated in 85 snowball game. Montana gave Elway the biggest Superbowl beating with the 49ers. 55-10. Superbowl 24.
One of the great MNF game's ever, remember this one well, it was hyped all week but ended up delivering in the end.
My local paper had the headline "Montana's Mile-High March"
What's really astonishing about Joe Montana, is how calm he is when the game is on the line. He seems to have a quiet place inside him that is extraordinary. A million best wishes, Joe..
Cool, calm and extremely talented..
They didnt call him "cool Joe" for nothing😏
@Omar, Indeed, Joe was the coolest under fire. All best wishes.
A far better era of football than we have today IMO.
Yep...
"That was a classic."---Al Michaels
In my opinion, one of the ten greatest games in the history of Monday Night Football.
It is.
The greatest game of the 1990s. Thanks Steve Sabol. Rest in peace.
Definitely in the top 3-4. Bills/49ers in 1992, Raiders/Chiefs 1999, 49ers/Giants in 1990 (yes, 7-3 and a fantastic game) and Giants/Cowboys 1993 are in there somewhere for me as well.
I think Chiefs / 49ers, when Montana just absolutely DESTROYED Steve Young was the best game of the 90's. The smile on Joe's face, man. It was so good.
This game and the 1994 NFC Championship game. If you want to see two teams who hated each other more than and current rivalry, both of whom were stacked with future hall of famers, there are none than can equal the 94' NFC Championship between the Dallas Cowboys and 49ers. When 7 different fights break out on live tv before the damn coin flip you know it's gonna be good.
Broncos-Chiefs, 1990(Okoye-Atwater game)
Bills-49ers, 1992
Dolphins-Patriots, 1994
Chiefs-49ers, 1994
Dolphins-Jets, 1994
Cowboys-Giants, 1994
Broncos-Redskins, 1995
49ers-Colts, 1998
Raiders-Chiefs, 1999
People forget that 1994 had one of the most entertaining football seasons ever. At least up until the Super Bowl snoozer.
Bears dolphins mind 1985
I know times change, but I really loved all the classic uniforms from my youth...Denver, Miami, LA Rams, Minnesota. These all looked better than the current schemes IMHO.
Elway Was An Absolute Animal. Running and passing. what a great QB.
Derek Diggs
And this was well past his physical prime.
Great competitor. Always was trying to win. Maybe his best asset. Obviously he was multi-dimensional in his skill set.
+@@lzv6990 Had yet to win 2 Superbowls.
Derek Diggs he had 5 touchdowns 5 picks
@@iloading_ At the time of the game, yes. However, I think Derek is talking about John Elway in his career overall and what he saw from Elway. You know, Longfellow had a saying that goes as follows, "In life, one must either be the hammer, or the anvil." John Elway was both of those, in my honest opinion.
Did anyone notice the cameraman having the hots for Mrs. Montana. I remember that game well. I was jumping yelling and screaming. My kids thought the house was on fire. Montana was to first true Comeback kid. He most of all was a nice guy. Class act.
The greatest NFL game of all time! Joe Montana is and will always be the best!
Marcus Allen is a true NFL player. He scores, and walks back to the bench. None of this kiddie celebration BS. When he left my Beloved Raiders, I was sad that day. But he is the consummate player. Nice, calm and simply brilliant.
Michael Leon no no
What? A raider fan who doesnt irrationally hate marcus allen? Kudos to you, sir.
Marcus Allen was very popular with his Raider teammates, but not with Al Davis. Davis, for whatever stupid reason, had some inexplicable grudge against him. After years of putting up with Davis' hostility and childlike attitude, Allen finally got tired of it and asked to be traded to a team that would actually appreciate his talent enough to put it to full use instead of letting it slowly waste away on the sidelines year after year. You can thank Davis' ego for that.
@@SingleTax it's because al didn't want him. his staff basically forced al to draft him. so al, being the petty ass wipe that he was, punished marcus because al was proven wrong.
Damn Brady is good.i say good cause there really are no words.but joe Montana was just magical in his comfort on a football field.the absolute epitome of a quarterback.
Brady better than Montana just stop the hate it’s getting pathetic
@@wareagleauburn7721 Montana is the only QB I will accept as equal to or better than Brady. Those two are in their own little world with how great they are/were
@@wareagleauburn7721 JOE MONTANA & JOHN ELWAY DIDN'T PLAY IN THE CUPCAKE ERA [BREATHE ON TOM BRADY & P MANNING 15 YRD PENALTY] THEY DIDN'T MAKE BULLS!T RULES FOR MONTANA, ELWAY, MARINO THEY GOT THE CRAP KNOCKED OUT OF THEM GOT UP LIKE REAL MEN, SO TAKE YOUR LITTLE TOM BRADY MAN CRUSHING CUPCAKE SELF & KISS OFF!! TOM BRADY WILL NEVER EVER EVER COMPARE.
JOE MONTANA DIDN'T NEED HIS KICKER TO WIN SUPER BOWLS EITHER!!
Phoenix Rison Funny I remember Montana coming out and saying that his O-line used silicone on their jerseys to make them slippery so it would be easier to defend Joe. Also Jerry Rice has admitted to using Stickem so it would be easier to catch passes. Man imagine Randy Moss using stickem or If Brady’s O-line using Silicone against the Giants in superbowl 42, Brady would be the QB of a 19-0 team
Thank you for another incredible game - Aside from seeing a great battle between legends, it's great to see a game without constant interruptions, with insightful commentary!
The last drive shows how great Joe Montana was.
Scary how cool he was. Can feel it in the last minute that he wasn’t even fazed. He clearly could’ve played another 3-5 years but his hart was in SF so he retired. Young was nasty but Montana was GREATNESS and could’ve won a few more Super Bowls had they kept him….
@@armandorodriguez6447 Montana's body was getting too beat up to keep playing.
checkdowns to wide open receivers isn't great
I remember this game as a kid. My mom let me stay up late for once to watch the finish of this memorable game. I use to have to go to bed at halftime since the game started later back then. But for that night she knew this game was special. The boys at school were talking about it the next day.
It's like on that last drive Elway was seeing Joe do what he did on the drive against Cleveland in the 80's. But I felt sorry for Denver as they were seeing KC go down field but at the same time happy for Joe and Marty get a win at mile high. With Montana on the sidelines with time left the game is never over. Great game by both teams.
What people forget is that the year ealier Elway did this to Montana in 1993 in Denver 27-21 Elway game winning drive. People don't remember that one cause it wasn't on Monday Night
Did u feel sorry for Joe the year earlier when John did it to him
never feel sorry for them BASTARDS from denver.....hate that orange ugly ass team....hate buck toothed elway.... ...55-10...9ers 55 bucktooth's 10 0n jan 24 1990.....niners are champions every year, especially over that creep.....
The difference between Elway and Montana is. Montana would have made sure there wasn't a minute and 30 secs left.
I was 3 yrs old and still remember this epic battle.
I was 16 when I watching this game. Many Hall of Famer, on the Chiefs, had Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, and the late Derek Thomas, on the Broncos John Elway and Shannon Sharpe.
Thank you to this channel for uploading such a high quality real-time broadcast. It doesn't get any better than this.
2:05:42 Elway: Time for my game saving drive!
2:19:11 Montana: Okay Elway, let me show you what a game saving drive REALLY looks like.
PREACH!
6 hall of famers in this game. Why is Neil Smith not in the hall of fame?
Besides Montana, Elway and Allen who are the other three?
My guess (correct me if wrong) are Atwater, Thomas and Sharpe.(?) Mecklenburg should also be there besides Smith (maybe he is).
Because he probably farted around Roger Goodell at some NFL Function back in 2012 and his reputation stunk ever since.
7. I believe Will Shields was in the game too
Why is Marty Schottenheimer NOT in the HOF?
204 NFL wins as HC.
@@Redmenace96 His playoff record, probably. Jim Mora and Dan Reeves have the same issue. Which for the record, I think is BS.
two of the very best ever comeback quarterbacks
One of the greatest games I've seen back in my day!!! Two extraordinary quarterbacks
It really was. I remember seeing it when it happened.
I got in trouble staying up late (7th grade)watching this game!
Montana was the best!
That was a great game remember that game like yesterday
Marty is the dusty baker of the nfl when it came to regular season sucess and bad postseason luck...
Montana rules
I remember this game like it was yesterday, one of the best Monday night games ever!!!
2:26:00 Montana for the Win!
Watching this really made me miss that gun Elway had for a arm. His passes were always with authority.
I remember being in the military and every year I'd be at a different base to see Elway beat my Chiefs, usually on a last minute drive. 89 I was in Oklahoma. 90 I was in Korea. 91 I was in Miami. 92 I was in Tampa. 93 I was in Korea again. Finally in 94 and Montana finally beat Elway. That's 6 different military bases in 5 years lol.
Back when fullbacks were around more
Saw this one live as a kid. Glad to see it was uploaded. Legendary performance by legends at QB
Any lifelong chiefs fan probably has a hard time seeing Lin Elliot in a game again. Him doing the opening kickoff I know I did.
Oh man what a great game. I'm fiending for football since the season is over. Watching this classic hit the spot today
One of the best games I was privileged to see. I love this game. Viva American football.
Holy crap!! I was so entertained the entire time by this game. They just don't get any closer than that lol. Oh wow, such an awesome game. Even though my Broncos lost.
This was the first game I ever saw. It's the reason I love the Chiefs and the reason I love football.
Joe the G.O.A.T
Build Legacy nah
Build Legacy L
Build Legacy L
Yup. He didn't put up huge numbers, but he was a great leader.

Watched this game live, God those were good times!
I was 12 and remember this game! So many Legends including Frank and Al Michaels!!! Those voices are legendary!!!!!!
Don't even think I was mad when I watched it at 14. Best game I ever saw at that point. Go Broncos!
That was a frustrating season for us Broncos' fans. A brutal 0-4 start, followed by a 7-2 streak that got them back in contention. Then they lost their last 3 games when they still had a chance at a Wild Card berth.
The Defense was their undoing. Orange Mush, we called them. Gave up almost 400 points and got torched at inopportune times.
Damn I wonder how much longer Derrick Thomas would've played if wasn't for the car crash!
I would say at least 2-3 more years.
+Charles Gorman Nah he would of played longer than that, he had at the very least another 5 years in him, maybe 6! He wasn't old at all plus he was still in his prime pretty much!
He's in the Hall of Fame regardless. Well deserved.
He didnt need to prove it to anyone with a brain, but this proves that Joe could play with anyone no matter what.
atrain 34007 So can Brady
GalvatronVGC yeah with one system and bill🖓
GalvatronVGC lmao tru
can't teach clutch
drencrum right and Brady has folded in the clutch more than Montana has for sure
Games like this that are so much apart of my child hood. I start to remember exactly what I was doing this Monday night. Being lucky to have a TV in my room watching this game playing NFL 95 on my Sega Game Gear 😂. I was 9. years old. Believe mom made chicken, rice a Roni and salad for dinner. Man, Al, Dan, Frank. The commentary of my life😂
This video looks great for being now 27 years-old.
Montana proved he was the better qb. no question. One of my all time favorite games. Elway getting beat on his home turf. Shannon Sharpe fumbles away ball!
KC was 0=11 in Mile High, since 1982 coming into the game!
I'm a lifetime chiefs fan and sorry that Elway took some crappie dan reeves teams to 4 superbowls that they had no business in. Elway would have won more superbowls on those 49er teams! Elway was super talented and tough. Broke my heart many many times. Joe was nowhere near the athlete of Elway and as far as arm strength and impossible throws Elway was the best. Imagine him playing now with all the rule changes. Elway would be the best. Didn't like him cause he beat us but damn had to respect his play!
DT and NS the best duo in NFL history...
I was at this game, a Chiefs fan, in the south stands (where the hardcore Broncos fans sat). I wasnt sure we were going to make it out of the stadium (or the south stands for that matter). It was nuts.
Way cool, thanks for posting this. I remember this well.
Lord you can take me now, I've seen it all. Sweet comment made me laugh.
Man I miss Frank Gifford
M??? A????? I miss this crew! This was Monday Night Football for me. Not to mention Elway vs Montana. Absolute classic MNF.
HE'S STILL AROUND....i seen him at a motel with a stewardess...ooppss...i meant 'FLIGHT ATTENDENT..... she was attending pretty boy mr. bland at a motel where my work crew was staying.....(ps, don't tell kathy)
So true. Even Lynn Swan was a good sideline reporter.
I miss 'em all. Dierdorf was such a burly, blue collar guy! Gifford's humility, and Al's excitement--great triple threat of announcers in the booth!
Montana is the best
Thanks. Keep em coming!
I would take Montana over Brady too. Montana didn't have near the rules protecting him back then like QB's have today.
Will be interesting to see what happens to Brady's legacy if things go poorly at Tampa. And much of it won't be Brady's fault, Tampa is just not a well constructed team and that O-line was porous last season. But still... Brady chose to play there.
philipglassrules,
Why compared the Great Joe cool Montana, the GOAT, to a known cheater?
@@benthekeeshond545 bro how did cheat?... Seriously please explain...btw

The rules protect Brady himself? Lol that's funny, never heard that...🤦 btw Brady has already SMASHED Montana's record and nfl records...so ya I'll take Brady all day, Montana had Rice and his whole O'line is in the HOF...i mean look who he had for a defense too...btw that same 49ers team won a super bowl WITHOUT Montana in 1995.... 🤷

Why do I have to go over that again? Isn't that redundant? Everybody knew Belicheat and his Cheatriots cheated over the last 20 years. Proven cheaters and so is the crybaby, Brady. Brady was suspended for something? Hopefully, the HOF will penalize him the way baseball treated the PED cheaters.
I knew about American Football and I love it because of Joe Montana. Guess what my favorite teams are...
Im gonna guess the Toronto Argonauts & Jacksonville Jaguars because you're WILD!
Why Montana will always be in the GOAT conversation.
My favorite non-Raiders Monday Night Football game of all time and it's not even close. The last extraction of Montana Magic to help Marty Schottenheimer break his Mile High jinx.
One of the greatest games in NFL History!
Steve Atwater and Dennis Smith was maybe the best safety tandem in the league at one time. Both Pro Bowlers
Montana and Elway on the same screen, what a treat!
I watched this game live almost 30 years ago. Probably the best NFL game I've ever watched. I still remember where I was and my life at the time when I watched it.
Best MNF game I ever watched - and why Denver ever changed those uniforms, I'll never know...
I’m a Giants fan ! But love this game so classic ! Two fantastic Quarterbacks going at it !
Im a packers fan and I completely agree!
One of the best games I have seen. Such great quarterbacks
I watch this game on TV and to this day is one of the greatest games between Montana and it'll wait I've ever seen kudos to the two of the best quarterbacks that ever lived
Dan Deordoff " take me now lord. Ive seen it all " the greatest Monday night football game ever. JOE MONTANA WILL ALWAYS BE THE 🐐
Joe cool 😎😎 before (TB12).
"Touchdown Montana Magic!"
It was my first game, 27 rows up in the South Stands...15 years old....still maybe the greatest game I've seen!
Been a long since I've felt like this. Now we're in the Golden Era of Chiefs. Feel so good to be a Chief.
Brady greatest off all time I don't think so. Football is not even the same since quarterback of this era gets a free ride and don't have to worry about getting knocked out of the game like in the 80s or 90s. These days you cant even breath on a quarterback and you get a stupid penalty. Football since 2000 is entertainment now no longer a sport. So obvious with every year theirs a Disney ending.
Peter Khvann werd qbs used to die back then
You cant even hit the receivers in today's game either
Well said,
I forget what a cannon Elway had. Holy cow!
One of the best games I ever watched!
@NFL PLEASE put up more old Elway games.
They should still use ex-nfl players down on the field to give updates like Lynn Swann
Yep and before the brutal back to back of dennis miller and then kormheiser
Wow, that was a helluva game!
The best game I ever saw in person.
Probably my favorite Monday night game ever.
All this hoopla about Brady who has cheated and has been suspended four games. And another improprieties by the New England Patriots by farJoe Montana is the best quarterback I've ever seen play !!!!!!
I agree. I haven't watched football in a few years now because I think it's fixed. The outcomes of way too many games are determined by the referees. Either the refs are betting on the game's or the league is literally telling them to make sure certain teams win. It's all about $$$ and TV ratings now. The small market teams don't have a chance
Correct
We got this kid that's terrine it up in KC #15 I think is the best
If you’ve watched Brady/manning play than you have seen the two greatest players ever. Weep
Both Montana and Brady had horrible winning record at mile high and they both had such clutch drives in this stadium but it was Brady who got intercepted for a 2-point conversion in the AFC Championship plus it was against Wade Philips just like this game.
Horrible winning records. 😂😂😂😂
Keanu Gonzaga
20+ years later, and I still can't believe Green held onto that ball after that hit.
