  • With more questions about OS Privacy coming up, and more concerns from supplier based on the new functionality in operating systems, there may be a shift in popularity of Operating systems. So far Windows has been an absolute dominant for many years without any change. Is there a chance that this will change?

I wish Linux adoption rate was so much higher, this would allow 3rd party vendors to start creating drivers, support etc for Linux. The minute Microsoft realizes that Linux is gaining traction because of the issues with Windows they would fix their junk. C'mon Linux get to 20% adoption!

In my opinion, Linux must reinforce an strategy and market it well. For example, Linux is developed by a community of developers (redundancy), and that has made Linux to be an atractive OS for them. I considered that a success atracting that people. But it needs more first class programs for other sectors, as Mac and Windows has for themselves, that can only be running in Linux, because what it matters, is the software available in your OS that is not available in others.

@@georgebetrian676 This will not be the direction FOSS will take, thats like the opposite.
Linux is not a company that want to rake in money, unlike Mac and Windows that have their own echo system, programming languages and all that shit, linux app tend to just be written using languages that combine to binaries and you would just change the compile setting to compile to other platforms.
The idea is for it to be an open platform and purposely trying to make linux specific software to lock in users would if anything just drive people away because what is that point?
For developers and servers linux has actually done this with containerisation which is a technology thats been killing things like freeBSD but both mac and windows have implementations of this now (WSL + docker on mac that is actually a VM...)
      Linux does
But when you look at what is not available on mac and windows like for example, window managers like hyprland, these are available on freeBSD
If you think its software that should attract people to linux then I dont think you understand the real appeal of linux.

Linux is not a for profit company...
tuxedo do adds for laptops and desktop but they are not linux.
Apple and and Microsoft have a monopoly.
microsoft bulk sell licences to laptop and desktop manufactures to pre-install windows when they sell them.
But look at the steam deck, they specifically picked linux so they dont have to get involved and be locked in to doing business with Microsoft, not that many companies have the ability to compete and most likely PC vendors dont care.

That‘s assuming windows is convenient. Right now it seems Microsoft are doing their best to make Windows less and less convenient.
People find convenient what works and what they‘re used to. When my father’s Win-XP PC died, Windows 8 was the current version of Windows. So that‘s what his new PC came with. Win 8 confused him and he hated it and wanted his old XP back. Since that wasn‘t an option I showed him the look of openSuse with a KDE desktop - which was a lot more similar to XP than Win 8 was and he agreed to let me install it on his computer. After I set it up for him - and found a version of solitaire that he liked - he kept finding things he liked better than on Windows XP; things like larger and easier to identify icons, not needing to double-click as often, stuff like that. He stuck with openSuse until he died. My dad was pretty helpless around computers unless someone else set them up specifically for his needs, which might be why the change to Linux was pretty easy for him. He knew too little to notice and get confused by the differences. As long as programs opened with a click on an icon on his desktop and he was able find the icons for „open file“, „save file“, „save as“, „print“ and „quit“ everything was fine in his computing world.
I think there are a lot users like my father, to whom transitioning from one version of windows to another version of windows wouldn‘t be that different from switching from windows to Linux. They‘ll just never know because there‘s no one to expose them to Linux.

When I was dual booting it made me realize just how slow and clunky Windows is compared to Linux. And not only does Windows eat up all the RAM, but then you have the paging file clogging things up as well. At idle, Linux Mint uses about 30% RAM and usually zero paging file resources. I switched to Linux over privacy concerns, but I love the speed and efficiency. Some of the lighter Linux distros are lightning fast on newer machines, such as Lubuntu. My favorite is Mint though, yet still extremely efficient.

great to hear more ppl are using Linux or considering switching to it. This I say as a lifelong windows user until like 4-5 ish years ago maybe(?). I only use windows for Xiaomis windows software when I need to do a very specific thing in their windows apps. and that is pretty much never. Theres window managers you can use if you really wanna let Linux use less ram. But if you have at least 8-16gb of ram or more, you can customize how the kernel handles swap(its basically the same as a paging file on windows) then setting the swappiness(tendency to put data in RAM) to a low setting will make things run a bit faster(I think so) since RAM is so much faster than SSDs in general. I just love tinkering with my Linux pc. I'm running Fedora ATM, their immutable "Atomic" version, which makes me worry less about breaking my system. not suitable for beginners IMHO, its great for me tho.

A lot of people say they don't care about privacy. I think they would care very much if i would go onto their property to look into their livingroom windows to check what kind of TV setup they have and how its arranged to send them better targeted advertisements in their mail.
How is that different to your OS / Browserhistory being used for the same thing? You could make the same argument about Clothing style / sizes and what not. I've been tinkering with Linux since Debian 2.0 (yup), but until fairly recently I didn't think it was a viable daily driver replacement for Windows or Mac. I'm a dual boxer under most circumstances, and one of the two has been running Linux for a couple of years now. With the announcement of the Recall feature, and with Microsoft's history with security, turning 'features' back on during updates and their trend toward an advertising supported OS model I decided to give Linux another try on my gaming machine. Nearly all of the gaming I do these days is through Steam anyway, and you know what? It all works. There are times I have to dig around a bit for an answer, but mostly stuff just works. I'm not going to hop into the distro wars, not going to advocate for one over another, and I'm certainly not going to say it's for everyone. But if we continue to support bad behavior, why would MS start prioritizing their users?

Thank you for your thoughts. I provided tech support to a Windows environment for 16 years, but I've been a Linux home user for over 20 years. I retired in 2015 and spoiled myself with enough computers to play around with a little of everything, jumping to Macs in the process, but keeping the PCs I had. Right now I have a Mac Mini, an iMac, and a Macbook Air (all M1s). I have a Core i7 tower running Ubuntu 24.04, a Ryzen 7 Mini PC running Ubuntu 24.04, and a Core i7 laptop running Zorin OS 17.1. (No more Windows for me.) I love experimenting with Linux, because I am able to help family members extend the life of their hardware when Windows is no longer an option. But, to me, the biggest obstacle to Linux adoption is also its greatest asset. It's a wonderful operating system, but it's not just one operating system. Technically, Linux is the kernel, but there is so much more to the OS than that. How does the Linux community establish and administer a campaign that informs the marketplace, educates potential users concerning their choices, and guides them in selecting and implementing a choice...without getting bogged down in arguments for X11 vs Wayland, KDE Plasma vs Gnome vs Cinnamon, Snap vs Flatpak, open source drivers vs proprietary, and all the other crap we fuss about?

Yeah, it's almost a sort of chicken and egg situation though. The majority of Linux users would probably consider them selves hobbyists so there aren't many people who want to unify and develop a set of standards more aimed at the general public, but until that happens, we won't get the market share that would promote the development of such standards. I don't really think desktop environment matters as UX choice is definitely a good thing, but we definitely need an agreed-upon set of more backend standards between distros and desktop environments. I think it all seems to be tending towards flatpak and wayland (as it matures), but there's still very much problems with e.g. the Gnome devs being difficult around native titlebars etc. which put more strain on developers of applications which means it's less likely things get ported to linux in the first place

I didn't dislike Windows as an OS, but I didn't like how Microsoft operates. But the "straw that broke the camel's back" for me was feeling like Microsoft could take control of my computer at any time without my permission. I encountered a virus, and suddenly, Windows took over control and started sending data to Microsoft without asking for permission or allowing me to stop it. I had to do a hard shutdown to get back control of the computer. Then I restarted and dealt with the virus myself. That's when I seriously looked into Linux. I ended up using Manjaro Linux and am still using it today. It was late 2022 when that happened. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I wasn't happy with the thought that Microsoft could take over my system at any time.
That said, I think there are ways that Linux could be improved, but I don't feel qualified enough to make a contribution, so I just deal with the issues that do come up. Most of the time, I don't have problems, and the few problems I've had, I've been able to resolve.

It's about governments, advertisers, and insurers not being able to track every little thing you do online, know more about you than you know about yourself, and use it to screw you over, whether now or later when they feel like changing the laws/ToS. However, I think your sentiment is one shared by most regular people; you have stuff to do and just want a computer that works, and I can't blame you for that. The only way for Linux to get mass adoption is for it to be simply better-and, in many ways, it is, but certain areas where it falls short are deal-breakers for too many people. That's when manufacturers can feel confident pre-installing Linux on their systems and the tables can really turn.

The problem with Linux is also its strength. Its open source and theres a version for everyone who tries it. First party developers can make software for Winadds an Mactax knowing that the software will work on that OS but releasing A linux version is going to be a support nightmare. The kernel is the same but a distro may have quirks that would cause some software to glitch. Some desktop environments will cause software to act in different ways. I mean look at the whole x11 / Wayland saga. The problem is even half of linux users dont know whats in the background so they would phone say Adobe and say the software keeps crashing. Suppport person asks if they are using x11 or wayland and they wouldnt have a clue. It would boil down to the software makers to release a stable version for one Distro, using one Kernel and one DE. Then all the other Linux boys and girls would get mad.

With installing Linux the installation is not that difficult anymore with many distros. In fact some have the option of installing it alongside Windows. The real problem for Linux is, beyond some specialty online retailers and as an extra option on just a few sites, it doesn't come on most computers out of the box. The user has to purposely install it themselves. The typical user you describe in your video is typically going to the store to buy a computer - either a laptop or a desktop (often for gaming) and not thinking much about the OS that it comes with. If the topic comes up the buyer will often choose Windows because it is so common. Until you can go to the typical Walmart or Target and buy a computer with Linux pre-installed you are unlikely to see the percentage of Linux desktop users increase that quickly. The only exception right now are Chromebooks which use Chrome OS which is based on Linux.

1: People do not care about privacy whatsoever, if they did then they wouldn't be asking "why should software be open source" but rather "why shouldn't software be libre"
2: Linux isn't just secure because less people use it. Its secure because unlike Windows software isn't installed with a web browser. On Linux you have a dedicated package manager which connects to a software repository. Because of that updates are sent out quicker, its more secure, and its more stable.
3: Most Linux stereotypes about difficulty originated in the late 90s and people assume Linux hasn't changed. Also Linux has an incredibly high skill ceiling, you dont need to have skill but if you it can be fully utilized.
4: Linux will never become the most used operating system, computer manufacturers have no incentive to make installation easy and every reason to ship Windows by default. Its as simple as Microsoft has money and the Linux foundation has ingored the desktop market. Also keep in mind installing Linux is as easy as flashing an ISO to a USB stick, how much easier can it get?

You're a tad wrong that linux will never become the most used OS. It's used everywhere with IoT devices, phones, Point of Sales Terminals, aircraft, space station, power plant operations with a windows overlay, the list goes on and on. Linux just isn't popular on the desktop yet due there are very few manufactures who sell Linux installed computers. Linux isn't popular due to gaming companies not wanting to support the OS but that is changing as more and more of the market share moves to Linux Desktops in the future if they want to survive. You really should search about where Linux runs most of the world. Microsoft and Apple are pushing people towards Linux with their crap they are shoving down peoples faces. Valve did a lot of good coming out with the steam deck showing the game support that Linux can do as that's what's most important to a lot of people. People complain about Adobe and now look what Adobe is doing to there customers as I'm sure you heard by now and the interesting thing is Adobe run's on a Apple device which is just another Nix OS but they don't want to support the largest Nix OS which is any Linux Distro which can be done really easy.

Linux is vastly better than it has been in the past, but don't assume it's all going to be roses. I finally switched to Linux a few months ago, but I've had a whole range of issues, some small, some large. Currently one of my biggest annoyances is that I get screen tearing when watching videos on HDMI (which I do all the time since my main TV is connected to a Linux laptop). It makes video unwatchable on HDMI. It makes me ask, why? This has never once happened to me on Mac or Windows, why is something like this NOT fixed in Linux. Who would EVER want screen tearing, why is it not the default to get it fixed? When I search the web I see that this issue has persisted for over a decade! I've followed at least 10 different tutorials for a means to fix it, but nope, still broken.
Other issues are things like constantly being nagged to do something with a Key ring. I don't know or care about the key ring and/or permissions, but I have to be, because every time I start Linux I can't use the internet since the Key ring password dialog (which is buried under all other windows) is open and wanting me to enter a password. WHY??? Just let me choose to save the password and stay logged in, why force me (the user) into this idiocy? Again, Mac and Windows have never done this to me. So, yes, we should all fear and hate Microsoft and Apple for their privacy invading practices. However, don't forget, Linux has tons of rough edges that you might eventually get past, but you're going to waste a bunch of time and be asking yourself, why am I running into this stupid issue in an OS that's been around for 30+ years.

Define "most proprietary software and hardware". There are numerous examples of hardware exclusively running using Linux, especially in industry. Sure, some audio interfaces or DJ controllers don't run on Linux but it shouldn't be too hard to simply pick one that runs fine with Linux. Like anything else, the OS isn't the problem, the user is.
There's a much simpler reason why Windows is so much bigger than Linux: Windows is shipped with nearly every PC and the users don't know enough to install a new OS. If as many PCs would be sold with preinstalled Linux, most users would just use that.

It is more important for me that those that decide to go to Linux are properly guided to be comfortable with the OS. There is all time in the world to decide! (But always take a backup of your important data!) If it is factually better for them to keep going with Windows or MacOS, they should be respected for that. Secondly Linux isn't hard. It isn't revolutionizing, so there is no novelty kick - it is pleasant, and you can do all kinds of work with it, but you have to make an enlightened decision on what distribution is best for you and that is not too easy. In general you should not go with a popular distro, but with an old established distro. I hear that everybody is talking about "Pop OS". What is that!? Generally, every PC that comes my way eventually will run Linux. Why? Windows is temporary. Eventually, your hardware won't support upgrades or will run poorly.
It's common that people just will leave an old system running an old version of Windows and buy another system. However, that's just wasteful. It's fine to buy a new system but it's not fine to just let that prior investment sit and depreciate and frankly get little value from it anymore. Those old systems get a new life on Linux and last and last and last. It's recycling your own investments.
Every once in a while, somebody will just 'give' me an older system with some old busted version of Windows on it (thinking it's worthless). I just put linux on it and, in some cases, give them away and people use those systems for years (aka: that 'premature' death of a Windows system gets a new... and longer.... lease on life... and I'm helping my community with people who cannot afford replacing expensive systems every few years).
The old saying was "what Intel 'givith', Microsoft 'taketh away'". It's somewhat still true even with AMD. Windows is the worst thing to do to perfectly good hardware (it's not a marriage.... it's just a 'hookup' and Microsoft has no interest in keeping you around... but they'll sell you a new license on a new system.... as it's a 'situationship' at best and you're just one of Microsoft's side chicks).

Linux? Which Linux? Mint? Ubuntu? Cute Fish? Which GUI? KDE? Gnome? Plasma?
The Linux ecosystem is too fragmented. The only thing Linux is good at is reproducing itself.

90% from the windows users can switch now to Linux. There is literally no reason not to run Linux in 2024 unless you use the some very specific software professionally.

Why would I leave Windows at all? All my programs work including old versions compared to the Mac, backwards compatibility is not the strong point of the Mac. All third-party peripherals are pre-optimized for Windows, and how can you even imagine a computer without games? No and don't give me solutions to run games on Linux as long as the two companies AMD and NVIDIA still don't write drivers properly for Linux, I write from experience unfortunately.
Security problems exist in every operating system Apple in general has the most serious security problem! At the hardware level in Apple silicon processors, check the facts first. Privacy In what parallel world is there privacy when we use a corporation's product? Maybe Linux has more privacy because it is not yet connected to a corporation, but I think at some point in the future Linux will also be less private.
Bottom line: I use an operating system that gives me the most value and that's windows for better or for worse.

Linux is EASIER then Windows. Install Linux... Done.
Install Windows, install video drivers, install printers, install mouse and keyboard drivers. Windows forces an update, start over because it replaces those drivers with inferior ones. Remove bloatware, turn off garbage you don't need like gamebar. Monthly patch then comes along and undoes it all. Now not only is Windows an admin nightmare, now it's a security and privacy nightmare.
Just Install Linux and be happy.

"Optional means that it's going to be turned on"
no it doesn't, it just means it's optional. and it IS off by default, you should check the news about it before you make a video.
"most will never find a way to disable it"
it's literally in the settings, there's a whole page dedicated to it. it's the same as turning off wifi or bluetooth. if people can figure those out, they will figure this one out as well.
"it will be turned on after updates"
I've never experienced this in my 15+ years of using windows. I also highly doubt MS would risk doing that after all the backlash they've received for it. and even if it were to happen, there's a permanent indicator on the taskbar that recall is active so you can just turn it off again.
"in a few years linux will become more accessible, more user friendly"
no it won't mate, I mean technically maybe a few changes will happen, but nothing drastic. it's been 35 years. if consumers didn't find linux appealing for 35 years what makes you think they will all rush to it in the next few years? you even realized it yourself at the end, you said how many of those 80% even care about this and just want a computer that works. that's the thing - windows and mac look 100 times better than linux, and they feel more modern. especially with all these AI features. and sure, many don't like them, but it gives you the feeling that this is a living OS which they're trying to improve all the time. linux feels like it's stuck in the 90s. and obviously the compatibility - EVERYTHING (apart from a few apple programs) exists and works on windows, and it "just works" (as much as I hate that phrase). for the most common stuff you never have to dig through settings and configure stuff up, it's made for the dumb people to just press a button and it works.
and while privacy is important (even though I do not think any of this stuff violates your privacy), nobody sane is going to dump everything else just for privacy. the same way nobody sane is moving to the jungle because only there you can find privacy.
linux is an os for enthusiasts, and it will probably forever stay that. if you want to manually recompile the kernel and swap it on your os every time there's a new version, then linux is just right for you. but as that graph shows, there's only like less than 5% of the people who are interested in doing that and living in the jungle.

I dont think you've used Linux in recent years because its really easy now to manage software via GUI apps and whatnot. I do have problems gettin niche windows software to run through wine tho but I dont care really. Most of what i want to do just works great on Linux, and I tinker and can usually fix most problems that may arise.
